Let M be the moduli space of semistable sheaves with Mukai vector 2v on an abelian or K3 surface where v is primitive such that <v,v>=2. We show that the blow-up of the reduced singular locus of M provides a symplectic resolution of singularities. This gives a direct description of O'Grady's resolutions of M\_{K3}(2,0,4) and M\_{Ab}(2,0,2).
In this paper we study moduli spaces of sheaves on an abelian or projective K3 surface. If $S$ is a K3, $v=2w$ is a Mukai vector on $S$, where $w$ is primitive and $w^{2}=2$, and $H$ is a $v-$generic polarization on $S$, then the moduli space $M_{v}$ of $H-$semistable sheaves on $S$ whose Mukai vector is $v$ admits a symplectic resolution $\widetilde{M}_{v}$. A particular case is the $10-$dimensional O'Grady example $\widetilde{M}_{10}$ of irreducible symplectic manifold. We show that $\widetilde{M}_{v}$ is an irreducible symplectic manifold which is deformation equivalent to $\widetilde{M}_{1…
We observe that O'Grady's birational maps between moduli of sheaves on an elliptic K3 surface can be interpreted as intermediate wall-crossing (wall-hitting) transformations at the so-called totally semistable walls, studied by Bayer and Macrì. As an ingredient to prove this observation, we describe the first totally semistable wall for ideal sheaves of $n$ points on the elliptic K3. We then use this observation to make a remark on Marian and Oprea's strange duality.
The aim of this work is to show that the moduli space $M_{10}$ introduced by O'Grady in \cite{OG1} is a $2-$factorial variety. Namely, $M_{10}$ is the moduli space of semistable sheaves with Mukai vector $v:=(2,0,-2)\in H^{ev}(X,\mathbb{Z})$ on a projective K3 surface $X$. As a corollary to our construction, we show that the Donaldson morphism gives a Hodge isometry between $v^{\perp}$ (sublattice of the Mukai lattice of $X$) and its image in $H^{2} (\widetilde{M}_{10},\mathbb{Z})$, lattice with respect to the Beauville form of the $10-$dimensional irreducible symplectic manifold $\widetilde{M…
On a Weierstraß elliptic surface $X$, we define a `limit' of Bridgeland stability conditions, denoted as $Z^l$-stability, by moving the polarisation towards the fiber direction in the ample cone while keeping the volume of the polarisation fixed. We describe conditions under which a slope stable torsion-free sheaf is taken by a Fourier-Mukai transform to a $Z^l$-stable object, and describe a modification upon which a $Z^l$-semistable object is taken by the inverse Fourier-Mukai transform to a slope semistable torsion-free sheaf. We also study wall-crossing for Bridgeland stability, and show th…
Following Bayer and Macrì, we study the birational geometry of singular moduli spaces $M$ of sheaves on a K3 surface $X$ which admit symplectic resolutions. More precisely, we use the Bayer-Macrì map from the space of Bridgeland stability conditions $\mathrm{Stab}(X)$ to the cone of movable divisors on $M$ to relate wall-crossing in $\mathrm{Stab}(X)$ to birational transformations of $M$. We give a complete classification of walls in $\mathrm{Stab}(X)$ and show that every birational model of $M$ obtained by performing a finite sequence of flops from $M$ appears as a moduli space of Bridgeland …
O'Grady conjectured that the Chow group of 0-cycles of the generic fiber of the universal family over the moduli space of polarized K3 surfaces of genus g is cyclic. This so-called generalized Franchetta conjecture has been solved only for low genera where there is a Mukai model (precisely, when g<11 and g=12, 13, 16, 18, 20), by the work of Pavic--Shen--Yin. In this paper, as a non-commutative analog, we study the Franchetta property for families of special cubic fourfolds (in the sense of Hassett) and relate it to O'Grady's conjecture for K3 surfaces. Most notably, by using special cubic fou…
Our aim in this article is to produce new examples of semistable Lazarsfeld- Mukai bundles on smooth projective surfaces $X$ using the notion of parabolic vector bundles. In particular, we associate natural parabolic structures to any rank two (dual) Lazarsfeld-Mukai bundle and study the parabolic stability of these parabolic bundles. We also show that the orbifold bundles on Kawamata coverings of $X$ corresponding to the above parabolic bundles are themselves certain (dual) Lazarsfeld-Mukai bundles. This gives semistable Lazarsfeld-Mukai bundles on Kawamata covers of the projective plane and …
We consider elliptic fibrations with arbitrary base dimensions, and generalise previous work by the second author. In particular, we check universal closedness for the moduli of semistable objects with respect to a polynomial stability that reduces to PT-stability on threefolds. We also show openness of this polynomial stability. On the other hand, we write down criteria under which certain 2-term polynomial semistable complexes are mapped to torsion-free semistable sheaves under a Fourier-Mukai transform. As an application, we construct an open immersion from a moduli of complexes to a moduli…
On a Weierstraß elliptic surface $X$, we define a `limit' of Bridgeland stability conditions, denoted $Z^l$-stability, by varying the polarisation in the definition of Bridgeland stability along a curve in the ample cone of $X$. We show that a slope stable torsion-free sheaf of positive (twisted) degree or a slope stable locally free sheaf is taken by a Fourier-Mukai transform on $D^b(X)$ to a $Z^l$-stable object, while a $Z^l$-semistable object of nonzero fiber degree can be modified so that its inverse Fourier-Mukai transform is a slope semistable torsion-free sheaf.
For a smooth cubic fourfold Y, we study the moduli space M of semistable objects of Mukai vector $2λ_1+2λ_2$ in the Kuznetsov component of Y. We show that with a certain choice of stability conditions, M admits a symplectic resolution $\tilde M$, which is a smooth projective hyperkähler manifold, deformation equivalent to the 10-dimensional examples constructed by O'Grady. As applications, we show that a birational model of $\tilde M$ provides a hyperkähler compactification of the twisted family of intermediate Jacobians associated to Y. This generalizes the previous result of Voisin arXiv:161…
We study birational maps among 1) the moduli space of semistable torsion sheaves of Hilbert polynomial $4m+2$ on a smooth quadric surface, 2) the moduli space of semistable torsion sheaves of Hilbert polynomial $m^{2}+3m+2$ on $\mathbb{P}^{3}$, 3) Kontsevich's moduli space of genus zero stable maps of degree 2 to Grassmannian $Gr(2, 4)$. A regular birational morphism from 1) to 2) is described in terms of Fourier-Mukai transform. The map from 3) to 2) is Kirwan's partial desingularization. Also we investigate several geometric properties of 1) by using the variation of moduli spaces of stable …
On the product elliptic threefold $X = C \times S$ where $C$ is an elliptic curve and $S$ is a K3 surface of Picard rank 1, we define a notion of limit tilt stability, which satisfies the Harder-Narasimhan property. We show that under the Fourier-Mukai transform $Φ$ on $D^b(X)$ induced by the classical Fourier-Mukai transform on $D^b(C)$, a slope stable torsion-free sheaf satisfying a vanishing condition in codimension 2 (e.g. a reflexive sheaf) is taken to a limit tilt stable object. We also show that a limit tilt semistable object on $X$ is taken by $Φ$ to a slope semistable sheaf, up to mod…
We focus on a class of Weierstrass elliptic threefolds that allows the base of the fibration to be a Fano surface or a numerically $K$-trivial surface. We define the notion of limit tilt stability, and show that the Fourier-Mukai transform of a slope stable torsion-free sheaf satisfying a vanishing condition in codimension 2 (e.g. a reflexive sheaf) is a limit tilt stable object. We also show that the inverse Fourier-Mukai transform of a limit tilt semistable object of nonzero fiber degree is a slope semistable torsion-free sheaf, up to modification in codimension 2.
Periods of moduli spaces of stable sheaves on K3 surfaces were computed by Mukai, O'Grady and the author. In this paper, we shall treat moduli spaces of stable sheaves on abelian surfaces.
This paper studies the action of the Fourier-Mukai transform on moduli spaces of vertical torsion sheaves on elliptic Calabi-Yau threefolds in Weierstrass form. Moduli stacks of semistable one dimensional sheaves on such threefolds are identified with open and closed substacksof moduli stacks of vertical semistable two dimensional sheaves on their Fourier-Mukai duals. In particular, this yields explicit conjectural results for Donaldson-Thomas invariants of vertical two dimensional sheaves on K3-fibered elliptic Calabi-Yau threefolds.
In this note we use an example of Mukai to construct semistable bundles of rank 3 with 6 independent sections on a curve of genus 9 or 11 with Clifford index strictly less than the Clifford index of the curve. The example also allows us to show the non-emptiness of some Brill-Noether loci with negative expected dimension.
Let $X$ be a smooth projective K3 surface over complex numbers and $C$ be an ample curve on $X$. In this paper we will study the semistability of the Lazarsfeld-Mukai bundle $E_{C, A}$ associated to a line bundle $A$ ion $C$ such that $|A|$ is a pencil on $C$ and computes the Clifford index of $C$. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for $E_{C, A}$ being semistable.
We systematically develop Bridgeland's and Bridgeland-Maciocia's techniques for studying elliptic fibrations, and identify criteria that ensure 2-term complexes are mapped to torsion-free sheaves under a Fourier-Mukai transform. As an application, we construct an open immersion from a moduli of stable complexes to a moduli of Gieseker stable sheaves on elliptic threefolds. As another application, we give various 1-1 correspondences between fiberwise semistable torsion-free sheaves and codimension-1 sheaves on Weierstrass surfaces.
In this paper we study deformation classes of moduli spaces of sheaves on a projective K3 surface. More precisely, let $(S1,H1)$ and $(S2,H2)$ be two polarized K3 surfaces, $m\in\mathbb{N}$, and for $i=1,2$ let $mv_{i}$ be a Mukai vector on $S_{i}$ such that $H_{i}$ is $mv_{i}-$generic. Moreover, suppose that the moduli spaces $M_{mv_{1}}(S_{1},H_{1})$ of $H_{1}-$semistable sheaves on $S_{1}$ of Mukai vector $mv_{1}$ and $M_{mv_{2}}(S_{2},H_{2})$ of $H_{2}-$semistable sheaves on $S_{2}$ with Mukai vector $mv_{2}$, have the same dimension. The aim of this paper is to prove that $M_{mv_{1}}(S_{1…
We describe the birational correspondences, induced by the Fourier-Mukai functor, between moduli spaces of semistable sheaves on elliptic surfaces with sections, using the notion of $P$-stability in the derived category. We give explicit conditions to determine whether these correspondences are isomorphisms. This is indeed not true in general and we describe the cases where the birational maps are Mukai flops. Moreover, this construction provides examples of new compactifications of the moduli spaces of vector bundles via sheaves with torsion and via complexes. We finally get for any fixed dim…
In a suitable regime of superstring theory, D-branes in a Calabi-Yau space and their most fundamental behaviors can be nicely described mathematically through morphisms from Azumaya spaces with a fundamental module to that Calabi-Yau space. In the earlier work [L-L-S-Y] (D(2): arXiv:0809.2121 [math.AG], with Si Li and Ruifang Song) from the project, we explored this notion for the case of D1-branes (i.e. D-strings) and laid down some basic ingredients toward understanding the notion of D-string world-sheet instantons in this context. In this continuation, D(10), of D(2), we move on to construc…
We consider moduli stacks of Bridgeland semistable objects that previously had only set-theoretic identifications with Uhlenbeck compactification spaces. On a K3 surface $X$, we give examples where such a moduli stack is isomorphic to a moduli stack of slope semistable locally free sheaves on the Fourier-Mukai partner $\hat{X}$. This yields a morphism from the stack of Bridgeland semistable objects to a projective scheme, which induces an injection on closed points. It also allows us to extend a theorem of Bruzzo-Maciocia on Hilbert schemes to a statement on moduli of complexes.
Moduli spaces of semistable sheaves on a K3 or abelian surface with respect to a general ample divisor are shown to be locally factorial, with the exception of symmetric products of a K3 or abelian surface and the class of moduli spaces found by O'Grady. Consequently, since singular moduli space that do not belong to these exceptional cases have singularities in codimension $\geq4$ they do no admit projective symplectic resolutions.
Let M(v) be the moduli of stable sheaves on K3 surfaces X of Mukai vector v. If v is primitive, than it is expected that M(v) is deformation equivalent to some Hilbert scheme and weight two hogde structure can be described by H^*(X,Z). These are known by Mukai, O'Grady and Huybrechts if rank is 1 or 2, or the first Chern class is primitive. Under some conditions on the dimension of M(v), we shall show that these assertion are true. For the proof, we shall use Huybrechts's results on symplectic manifolds.
This paper studies deformations and birational maps between singular moduli spaces of semistable sheaves with 2-divisible Mukai vectors on K3 surfaces. It is showed that under certain conditions, two such moduli spaces of the same dimension can be connected by deformations and birational maps.
In this survey article we describe moduli spaces of simple, stable, and semistable sheaves on K3 surfaces, following the work of Mukai, O'Grady, Huybrechts, Yoshioka, and others. We also describe some recent developments, including applications to the study of Chow rings of K3 surfaces, determination of the ample and nef cones of irreducible holomorphic symplectic manifolds, and moduli spaces of Bridgeland stable complexes of sheaves.
In this paper we study the second integral cohomology of moduli spaces of semistable sheaves on projective K3 surfaces. If $S$ is a projective K3 surface, $v$ a Mukai vector and $H$ a $v-$generic polarization on $S$, we show that $H^{2}(M_{v},\mathbb{Z})$ is a free $\mathbb{Z}-$module of rank 23 carrying a pure weight-two Hodge structure and a lattice structure, with respect to which $H^{2}(M_{v},\mathbb{Z})$ is Hodge isometric to the Hodge sublattice $v^{\perp}$ of the Mukai lattice of $S$. Similar results are proved for Abelian surfaces.
We prove the Bertram-Feinberg-Mukai conjecture for a generic curve $C$ of genus $g$ and a semistable vector bundle $E$ of rank two and determinant $K$ on $C$, namely we prove the injectivity of the Petri-canonical map $S^2(H^0(E))\to H^0(S^2(E))$.
In this paper we complete the determination of the index of factoriality of moduli spaces of semistable sheaves on an abelian or projective K3 surface $S$. If $v=2w$ is a Mukai vector, $w$ is primitive, $w^{2}=2$ and $H$ is a generic polarization, let $M_{v}(S,H)$ be the moduli space of $H-$semistable sheaves on $S$ with Mukai vector $v$. First, we describe in terms of $v$ the pure weight-two Hodge structure and the Beauville form on the second integral cohomology of the symplectic resolutions of $M_{v}(S,H)$ (when $S$ is K3) and of the fiber $K_{v}(S,H)$ of the Albanese map of $M_{v}(S,H)$ (w…
We develop a theory of Bridgeland stability conditions and moduli spaces of semistable objects for a family of varieties. Our approach is based on and generalizes previous work by Abramovich-Polishchuk, Kuznetsov, Lieblich, and Piyaratne-Toda. Our notion includes openness of stability, semistable reduction, a support property uniformly across the family, and boundedness of semistable objects. We show that such a structure exists whenever stability conditions are known to exist on the fibers. Our main application is the generalization of Mukai's theory for moduli spaces of semistable sheaves on…
We prove the non-emptiness of $M_{H,Y}(v)$, the moduli space of Gieseker-semistable sheaves on an unnodal Enriques surface $Y$ with Mukai vector $v$ of positive rank with respect to a generic polarization $H$. This completes the chain of progress initiated by H. Kim in \cite{Kim98}. We also show that the stable locus $M^s_{H,Y}(v)\neq\varnothing$ for $v^2>0$. Finally, we prove irreducibility of $M_{H,Y}(v)$ in case $v^2=0$ and $v$ primitive.
We characterize the subscheme of the moduli space of torsion-free sheaves on an elliptic surface which are stable of relative degree zeero (with respect to a polarization of type aH+bf, H being the section and f the elliptic fibre) which is isomorphic, via the relative Fourier-Mukai transform, with the relative compactified Simpson Jacobian of the family of those curves D in the surface which are flat over the base of the elliptic fibration. This generalizes and completes earlier constructions due to Friedman, Morgan and Witten. We also study the relative moduli scheme of sheaves whose restric…
In this paper we study examples of P^r-scrolls defined over primitively polarized K3 surfaces S of genus g, which arise from Brill-Noether theory of the general curve in the primitive linear system on S and from classical Lazarsfeld's results in. We show that such scrolls form an open dense subset of a component H of their Hilbert scheme; moreover, we study some properties of H (e.g. smoothness, dimensional computation, etc.) just in terms of the moduli space of such K3's and of the moduli space of semistable torsion-free sheaves of a given Mukai-vector on S. One of the motivation of this anal…
We study the rational Chow motives of certain moduli spaces of vector bundles on a smooth projective curve with additional structure (such as a parabolic structure or Higgs field). In the parabolic case, these moduli spaces depend on a choice of stability condition given by weights; our approach is to use explicit descriptions of variation of this stability condition in terms of simple birational transformations (standard flips/flops and Mukai flops) for which we understand the variation of the Chow motives. For moduli spaces of parabolic vector bundles, we describe the change in motive under …
Several situations are known when a holomorphic 2-form on a moduli space of sheaves over some base S is induced by a holomorphic 2-form on S. Moreover, the closedness of the 2-form on the base implies the closedness on the moduli space, which provides a stock of symplectic structures on moduli spaces (Mukai, Kobayashi, O'Grady, Tyurin, Huybrechts--Lehn). A parallel theory was developed for bivector fields and Poisson structures (Bottacin). However, there exist symplectic moduli spaces of sheaves over bases that have no holomorphic forms at all. A well-known example (Beauville--Donagi) is the f…
Let X be a non-singular algebraic curve of genus at least 3 and let M denote the moduli space of stable vector bundles of rank n and fixed determinant of degree d with n and d coprime. For any semistable bundle E over X, we can pull E back to XxM, tensor with a universal bundle and take the direct image W(E) on M. If the degree of E is sufficiently large, this direct image is locally free and we call it a generalised Picard bundle. In this paper we prove an inversion formula allowing us to recover E from W(E) and compute the space of infinitesimal deformations of W(E). We also identify a famil…
Building on the work of Mukai, we explore the birational geometry of the moduli spaces M_{S,L} of semistable rank two torsion-free sheaves, with c_1=-K_S and c_2=2, on a polarized degree one del Pezzo surface (S,L); this is related to the birational geometry of the blow-up X of P^4 in 8 points. Our analysis is explicit and is obtained by looking at the variation of stability conditions. Then we provide a careful investigation of the blow-up X and of the moduli space Y=M_{S,-K_S}, which is a remarkable family of smooth Fano 4-folds. In particular we describe the relevant cones of divisors of Y,…
Let $C$ be a smooth projective curve of genus $2$. Following a method by O' Grady, we construct a semismall desingularization $\tilde{\mathcal{M}}_{Dol}^G$ of the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_{Dol}^G$ of semistable $G$-Higgs bundles of degree 0 for $G=GL(2,\mathbb{C}), SL(2,\mathbb{C})$. By the decomposition theorem by Beilinson, Bernstein, Deligne one can write the cohomology of $\tilde{\mathcal{M}}_{Dol}^G$ as a direct sum of the intersection cohomology of $\mathcal{M}_{Dol}^G$ plus other summands supported on the singular locus. We use this splitting to compute the intersection cohomology of $…
The moduli space M_2 of rank four semistable symplectic vector bundles over a curve X of genus two is an irreducible projective variety of dimension ten. Its Picard group is generated by the determinantal line bundle Ξ. The base locus of the linear system |Ξ| consists of precisely those bundles without theta divisors, that is, admitting nonzero maps from every line bundle of degree -1 = 1-g over X. We show that this base locus consists of six distinct points, which are in canonical bijection with the Weierstrass points of the curve. We relate our construction of these bundles to another of Ray…
We use wall-crossing in the Bridgeland stability manifold to systematically study the birational geometry of the moduli space $M_σ(\mathbf{v})$ of $σ$-semistable objects of class $\mathbf{v}$ for a generic stability condition $σ$ on an arbitrary Enriques surface $X$. In particular, we show that for any other generic stability condition $τ$, the two moduli spaces $M_τ(\mathbf{v})$ and $M_σ(\mathbf{v})$ are birational. As a consequence, we show that for primitive $\mathbf{v}$ of odd rank $M_σ(\mathbf{v})$ is birational to a Hilbert scheme of points. Similarly, in even rank we show that $M_σ(\mat…
