Random planar maps are considered in the physics literature as the discrete counterpart of random surfaces. It is conjectured that properly rescaled random planar maps, when conditioned to have a large number of faces, should converge to a limiting surface whose law does not depend, up to scaling factors, on details of the class of maps that are sampled. Previous works on the topic, starting with Chassaing and Schaeffer, have shown that the radius of a random quadrangulation with $n$ faces, that is, the maximal graph distance on such a quadrangulation to a fixed reference point, converges in distribution once rescaled by $n^{1/4}$ to the diameter of the Brownian snake, up to a scaling constant. Using a bijection due to Bouttier, Di Francesco and Guitter between bipartite planar maps and a family of labeled trees, we show the corresponding invariance principle for a class of random maps that follow a Boltzmann distribution putting weight $q_k$ on faces of degree $2k$: the radius of such maps, conditioned to have $n$ faces (or $n$ vertices) and under a criticality assumption, converges in distribution once rescaled by $n^{1/4}$ to a scaled version of the diameter of the Brownian snake. Convergence results for the so-called profile of maps are also provided. The convergence of rescaled bipartite maps to the Brownian map, in the sense introduced by Marckert and Mokkadem, is also shown. The proofs of these results rely on a new invariance principle for two-type spatial Galton--Watson trees.
For every integer $n\geq 1$, we consider a random planar map $\mathcal{M}_n$ which is uniformly distributed over the class of all rooted bipartite planar maps with $n$ edges. We prove that the vertex set of $\mathcal{M}_n$ equipped with the graph distance rescaled by the factor $(2n)^{-1/4}$ converges in distribution, in the Gromov-Hausdorff sense, to the Brownian map. This complements several recent results giving the convergence of various classes of random planar maps to the Brownian map.
This paper concerns random bipartite planar maps which are defined by assigning weights to their faces. The paper presents a threefold contribution to the theory. Firstly, we prove the existence of the local limit for all choices of weights and describe it in terms of an infinite mobile. Secondly, we show that the local limit is in all cases almost surely recurrent. And thirdly, we show that for certain choices of weights the local limit has exactly one face of infinite degree and has in that case spectral dimension $4/3$ (the latter requires a mild moment condition).
We prove some asymptotic results for the radius and the profile of large random bipartite planar maps. Using a bijection due to Bouttier, Di Francesco and Guitter between rooted bipartite planar maps and certain two-type trees with positive labels, we derive our results from a conditional limit theorem for two-type spatial trees. Finally we apply our estimates to separating vertices of bipartite planar maps: with probability close to one when $n$ goes to infinity, a random $2\ka$-angulation with $n$ faces has a separating vertex whose removal disconnects the map into two components each with s…
A number of recent new proofs of Euler's celebrated identity are presented, all of which are probabilistic in nature and depend on the conformal invariance of planar Brownian motion.
We prove that scaling limits of random planar maps which are uniformly distributed over the set of all rooted 2k-angulations are a.s. homeomorphic to the two-dimensional sphere. Our methods rely on the study of certain random geodesic laminations of the disk.
We address the following question: When a randomly chosen regular bipartite multi--graph is drawn in the plane in the ``standard way'', what is the distribution of its maximum size planar matching (set of non--crossing disjoint edges) and maximum size planar subgraph (set of non--crossing edges which may share endpoints)? The problem is a generalization of the Longest Increasing Sequence (LIS) problem (also called Ulam's problem). We present combinatorial identities which relate the number of r-regular bipartite multi--graphs with maximum planar matching (maximum planar subgraph) of at most d …

In this review paper, we first discuss some open problems related to two-dimensional self-avoiding paths and critical percolation. We then review some closely related results (joint work with Greg Lawler and Oded Schramm) on critical exponents for two-dimensional simple random walks, Brownian motions and other conformally invariant random objects.
In this paper, we study two problems related to planar matchings in random bipartite graphs. First, we colour each edge of the complete bipartite graph $K_{n,n}$ uniformly randomly from amongst ${r}$ colours and show that if ${r}$ grows linearly with ${n}$ then the maximum rainbow matching is a non-trivial fraction of ${r}$ with high probability, i.e. with probability converging to one as ${n \rightarrow \infty}$ Next we consider planar matchings in a dependent setting where each vertex is forced to choose exactly one neighbour from amongst all possible choices. We obtain estimates for the lar…
We study the asymptotic behaviour of uniform random maps with a prescribed face-degree sequence, in the bipartite case, as the number of faces tends to infinity. Under mild assumptions, we show that, properly rescaled, such maps converge in distribution towards the Brownian map in the Gromov-Hausdorff sense. This result encompasses a previous one of Le Gall for uniform random $q$-angulations where $q$ is an even integer. It applies also to random maps sampled from a Boltzmann distribution, under a second moment assumption only, conditioned to be large in either of the sense of the number of ed…
We study the eight-vertex model at its free-fermion point. We express a new "switching" symmetry of the model in several forms: partition functions, order-disorder variables, couplings, Kasteleyn matrices. This symmetry can be used to relate free-fermion 8V-models to free-fermion 6V-models, or bipartite dimers. We also define new solution of the Yang-Baxter equations in a "checkerboard" setting, and a corresponding Z-invariant model. Using the bipartite dimers of Boutillier, de Tilière and Raschel, we give exact local formulas for edge correlations in the Z-invariant free-fermion 8V-model on l…
For a symmetric random walk in $Z^2$ with $2+δ$ moments, we represent $|\mathcal{R}(n)|$, the cardinality of the range, in terms of an expansion involving the renormalized intersection local times of a Brownian motion. We show that for each $k\geq 1$ \[ (\log n)^k [ \frac{1}{n} |\mathcal{R}(n)| +\sum_{j=1}^k (-1)^j (\textstyle{\frac1{2π}}\log n +c_X)^{-j} γ_{j,n}]\to 0, \qquad a.s. \] where $W_t$ is a Brownian motion, $W^{(n)}_t=W_{nt}/\sqrt n$, $γ_{j,n}$ is the renormalized intersection local time at time 1 for $W^{(n)}$, and $c_X$ is a constant depending on the distribution of the random wal…
This paper describes joint work with Oded Schramm and Wendelin Werner establishing the values of the planar Brownian intersection exponents from which one derives the Hausdorff dimension of certain exceptional sets of planar Brownian motion. In particular, we proof a conjecture of Mandelbrot that the dimension of the frontier is 4/3. The proof uses a universality principle for conformally invariant measures and a new process, the stochastic Loewner evolution ($SLE$), introduced by Schramm. These ideas can be used to study other planar lattice models from statistical physics at criticality. I d…
We introduce Kadanoff-Ceva order-disorder operators in the quantum Ising model. This approach was first used for the classical planar Ising model and recently put back to the stage. This representation turns out to be equivalent to the loop expansion of Sminorv's fermionic observables and is particularly interesting due to its simple and compact formulation. Using this approach, we are able to extend different results known in the classical planar Ising model, such as the conformal invariance/covariance of correlations and the energy-density, to the spin-representation of the (1+1) dimensional…
We consider planar maps with three boundaries, colloquially called pairs of pants. In the case of bipartite maps with controlled face degrees, a simple expression for their generating function was found by Eynard and proved bijectively by Collet and Fusy. In this paper, we obtain an even simpler formula for \emph{tight} pairs of pants, namely for maps whose boundaries have minimal length in their homotopy class. We follow a bijective approach based on the slice decomposition, which we extend by introducing new fundamental building blocks called bigeodesic triangles and diangles, and by working…
Generalizing results of Temperley, Brooks, Smith, Stone and Tutte and others we describe a natural equivalence between three planar objects: weighted bipartite planar graphs; planar Markov chains; and tilings with convex polygons. This equivalence provides a measure-preserving bijection between dimer coverings of a weighted bipartite planar graph and spanning trees on the corresponding Markov chain. The tilings correspond to harmonic functions on the Markov chain and to ``discrete analytic functions'' on the bipartite graph. The equivalence is extended to infinite periodic graphs, and we class…

We rigorously prove the existence and the conformal invariance of scaling limits of the magnetization and multi-point spin correlations in the critical Ising model on arbitrary simply connected planar domains. This solves a number of conjectures coming from the physical and the mathematical literature. The proof relies on convergence results for discrete holomorphic spinor observables and probabilistic techniques.
An isoradial graph is a planar graph in which each face is inscribable into a circle of common radius. We study the 2-dimensional perfect matchings on a bipartite isoradial graph, obtained from the union of an isoradial graph and its interior dual graph. Using the isoradial graph to approximate a simply-connected domain bounded by a simple closed curve, by letting the mesh size go to zero, we prove that in the scaling limit, the distribution of height is conformally invariant and converges to a Gaussian free field.
These lecture notes provide a (almost) self-contained account on conformal invariance of the planar critical Ising and FK-Ising models. They present the theory of discrete holomorphic functions and its applications to planar statistical physics (more precisely to the convergence of fermionic observables). Convergence to SLE is discussed briefly. Many open questions are included.
For a broad class of planar Markov processes, viz. Lévy processes satisfying certain conditions (valid \textit{eg} in the case of Brownian motion and Lévy flights), we establish an exact, universal formula describing the shape of the convex hull of sample paths. We show indeed that the average number of edges joining paths' points separated by a time-lapse $Δτ\in \left[Δτ_1, Δτ_2\right]$ is equal to $2\ln \left(Δτ_2 / Δτ_1 \right)$, regardless of the specific distribution of the process's increments and regardless of its total duration $T$. The formula also exhibits invariance when the time sc…
Milz and Strunz ({\it J. Phys. A}: {\bf{48}} [2015] 035306) recently studied the probabilities that two-qubit and qubit-qutrit states, randomly generated with respect to Hilbert-Schmidt (Euclidean/flat) measure, are separable. They concluded that in both cases, the separability probabilities (apparently exactly $\frac{8}{33}$ in the two-qubit scenario) hold {\it constant} over the Bloch radii ($r$) of the single-qubit subsystems, jumping to 1 at the pure state boundaries ($r=1$). Here, firstly, we present evidence that in the qubit-qutrit case, the separability probability is uniformly distrib…
The dimer model is the study of random dimer covers (perfect matchings) of a graph. A double-dimer configuration on a graph $G$ is a union of two dimer covers of $G$. We introduce quaternion weights in the dimer model and show how they can be used to study the homotopy classes (relative to a fixed set of faces) of loops in the double dimer model on a planar graph. As an application we prove that, in the scaling limit of the "uniform" double-dimer model on ${\mathbb Z}^2$ (or on any other bipartite planar graph conformally approximating $\mathbb C$), the loops are conformally invariant. As othe…
We prove that the scaling limit of loop-erased random walk in a simply connected domain $D$ is equal to the radial SLE(2) path in $D$. In particular, the limit exists and is conformally invariant. It follows that the scaling limit of the uniform spanning tree in a Jordan domain exists and is conformally invariant. Assuming that the boundary of the domain is a $C^1$ simple closed curve, the same method is applied to show that the scaling limit of the uniform spanning tree Peano curve, where the tree is wired along a proper arc $A$ on the boundary, is the chordal SLE(8) path in the closure of $D…
We study planar random holonomy fields which are processes indexed by paths on the plane which behave well under the concatenation and orientation-reversing operations on paths. We define the Planar Markovian Holonomy Fields as planar random holonomy fields which satisfy some independence and invariance by area-preserving homeomorphisms properties. We use the theory of braids in the framework of classical probabilities: for finite and infinite random sequences the notion of invariance by braids is defined and we prove a new version of the de-Finetti's Theorem. This allows us to construct a fam…

We prove an almost sure invariance principle (approximation by d-dimensional Brownian motion) for vector-valued Holder observables of large classes of nonuniformly hyperbolic dynamical systems. These systems include Axiom~A diffeomorphisms and flows as well as systems modelled by Young towers with moderate tail decay rates. In particular, the position variable of the planar periodic Lorentz gas with finite horizon approximates a 2-dimensional Brownian motion.
This is the second paper in the series devoted to the study of the dimer model on t-embeddings of planar bipartite graphs. We introduce the notion of perfect t-embeddings and assume that the graphs of the associated origami maps converge to a Lorentz-minimal surface $\mathrm{S}_ξ$ as $δ\to 0$. In this setup we prove (under very mild technical assumptions) that the gradients of the height correlation functions converge to those of the Gaussian Free Field defined in the intrinsic metric of the surface $\mathrm{S}_ξ$. We also formulate several open questions motivated by our work.
This is an introductory account of the emergence of conformal invariance in the scaling limit of planar critical percolation. We give an exposition of Smirnov's theorem (2001) on the conformal invariance of crossing probabilities in site percolation on the triangular lattice. We also give an introductory account of Schramm-Loewner evolutions (SLE(k)), a one-parameter family of conformally invariant random curves discovered by Schramm (2000). The article is organized around the aim of proving the result, due to Smirnov (2001) and to Camia and Newman (2007), that the percolation exploration path…
There are many classical random walk in random environment results that apply to ergodic random planar environments. We extend some of these results to random environments in which the length scale varies from place to place, so that the law of the environment is in a certain sense only translation invariant {\em modulo scaling}. For our purposes, an ``environment'' consists of an infinite random planar map embedded in $\mathbb C$, each of whose edges comes with a positive real conductance. Our main result is that under modest constraints (translation invariance modulo scaling together with th…
