We prove some asymptotic results for the radius and the profile of large random bipartite planar maps. Using a bijection due to Bouttier, Di Francesco and Guitter between rooted bipartite planar maps and certain two-type trees with positive labels, we derive our results from a conditional limit theorem for two-type spatial trees. Finally we apply our estimates to separating vertices of bipartite planar maps: with probability close to one when $n$ goes to infinity, a random $2\ka$-angulation with $n$ faces has a separating vertex whose removal disconnects the map into two components each with size greater that $n^{1/2-\vep}$.
We prove some asymptotic results for the radius and the profile of large random rooted planar maps with faces of arbitrary degrees. Using a bijection due to Bouttier, Di Francesco and Guitter between rooted planar maps and certain four-type trees with positive labels, we derive our results from a conditional limit theorem for four-type spatial Galton-Watson trees.
We generalize the uniform spanning tree to construct a family of determinantal measures on essential spanning forests on periodic planar graphs in which every component tree is bi-infinite. Like the uniform spanning tree, these measures arise naturally from the laplacian on the graph. More generally these results hold for the "massive" laplacian determinant which counts rooted spanning forests with weight $M$ per finite component. These measures typically have a form of conformal invariance, unlike the usual rooted spanning tree measure. We show that the spectral curve for these models is alwa…
We show that for infinite planar unimodular random rooted maps, many global geometric and probabilistic properties are equivalent, and are determined by a natural, local notion of average curvature. This dichotomy includes properties relating to amenability, conformal geometry, random walks, uniform and minimal spanning forests, and Bernoulli bond percolation. We also prove that every simply connected unimodular random rooted map is sofic, that is, a Benjamini-Schramm limit of finite maps.
We extend the Marcus-Schaeffer bijection between orientable rooted bipartite quadrangulations (equivalently: rooted maps) and orientable labeled one-face maps to the case of all surfaces, that is orientable and non-orientable as well. This general construction requires new ideas and is more delicate than the special orientable case, but it carries the same information. In particular, it leads to a uniform combinatorial interpretation of the counting exponent $\frac{5(h-1)}{2}$ for both orientable and non-orientable rooted connected maps of Euler characteristic $2-2h$, and of the algebraicity o…
For every integer $n\geq 1$, we consider a random planar map $\mathcal{M}_n$ which is uniformly distributed over the class of all rooted bipartite planar maps with $n$ edges. We prove that the vertex set of $\mathcal{M}_n$ equipped with the graph distance rescaled by the factor $(2n)^{-1/4}$ converges in distribution, in the Gromov-Hausdorff sense, to the Brownian map. This complements several recent results giving the convergence of various classes of random planar maps to the Brownian map.
We characterize all translation invariant half planar maps satisfying a certain natural domain Markov property. For p-angulations with p \ge 3 where all faces are simple, we show that these form a one-parameter family of measures H^{(p)}_{alpha}. For triangulations we also establish existence of a phase transition which affects many properties of these maps. The critical maps are the well known half plane uniform infinite planar maps. The sub-critical maps are identified as all possible limits of uniform measures on finite maps with given boundary and area.
We consider the abelian sandpile model and the uniform spanning unicycle on random planar maps. We show that the sandpile density converges to 5/2 as the maps get large. For the spanning unicycle, we show that the length and area of the cycle converges to the hitting time and location of a simple random walk in the first quadrant. The calculations use the "hamburger-cheeseburger" construction of Fortuin--Kasteleyn random cluster configurations on random planar maps.
We consider large random planar maps and study the first-passage percolation distance obtained by assigning independent identically distributed lengths to the edges. We consider the cases of quadrangulations and of general planar maps. In both cases, the first-passage percolation distance is shown to behave in large scales like a constant times the usual graph distance. We apply our method to the metric properties of the classical Tutte bijection between quadrangulations with $n$ faces and general planar maps with $n$ edges. We prove that the respective graph distances on the quadrangulation a…
These are the notes for a series of lectures given at the Clay Mathematical Institute Summer School in Buzios, July 11 - August 7, 2010. We review some of the recent aspects of scaling limits of random trees and planar maps, in particular via their relations with bijective enumeration and Gromov-Hausdorff convergence.
Dyadic lattice graphs and their duals are commonly used as discrete approximations to the hyperbolic plane. We use them to give examples of random rooted graphs that are stationary for simple random walk, but whose duals have only a singular stationary measure. This answers a question of Curien and shows behaviour different from the unimodular case. The consequence is that planar duality does not combine well with stationary random graphs. We also study harmonic measure on dyadic lattice graphs and show its singularity.
A unicellular map is a map which has only one face. We give a bijection between a dominant subset of rooted unicellular maps of fixed genus and a set of rooted plane trees with distinguished vertices. The bijection applies as well to the case of labelled unicellular maps, which are related to all rooted maps by Marcus and Schaeffer's bijection. This gives an immediate derivation of the asymptotic number of unicellular maps of given genus, and a simple bijective proof of a formula of Lehman and Walsh on the number of triangulations with one vertex. From the labelled case, we deduce an expressio…
We construct the uniform infinite planar map (UIPM), obtained as the n \to \infty local limit of planar maps with n edges, chosen uniformly at random. We then describe how the UIPM can be sampled using a "peeling" process, in a similar way as for uniform triangulations. This process allows us to prove that for bond and site percolation on the UIPM, the percolation thresholds are p_c^bond=1/2 and p_c^site=2/3 respectively. This method also works for other classes of random infinite planar maps, and we show in particular that for bond percolation on the uniform infinite planar quadrangulation, t…
The infinite discrete stable Boltzmann maps are generalisations of the well-known Uniform Infinite Planar Quadrangulation in the case where large degree faces are allowed. We show that the simple random walk on these random lattices is always subdiffusive with exponent less than 1/3. Our method is based on stationarity and geometric estimates obtained via the peeling process which are of own interest.
We prove that scaling limits of random planar maps which are uniformly distributed over the set of all rooted 2k-angulations are a.s. homeomorphic to the two-dimensional sphere. Our methods rely on the study of certain random geodesic laminations of the disk.
We study random bipartite planar maps defined by assigning nonnegative weights to each face of a map. We prove that for certain choices of weights a unique large face, having degree proportional to the total number of edges in the maps, appears when the maps are large. It is furthermore shown that as the number of edges $n$ of the planar maps goes to infinity, the profile of distances to a marked vertex rescaled by $n^{-1/2}$ is described by a Brownian excursion. The planar maps, with the graph metric rescaled by $n^{-1/2}$, are then shown to converge in distribution toward Aldous' Brownian tr…
We study the geometry of infinite random Boltzmann planar maps having weight of polynomial decay of order $k^{-2}$ for each vertex of degree $k$. These correspond to the dual of the discrete "stable maps" of Le Gall and Miermont [Scaling limits of random planar maps with large faces, Ann. Probab. 39, 1 (2011), 1-69] studied in [Budd & Curien, Geometry of infinite planar maps with high degrees, Electron. J. Probab. (to appear)] related to a symmetric Cauchy process, or alternatively to the maps obtained after taking the gasket of a critical $O(2)$-loop model on a random planar map. We show that…

This paper concerns random bipartite planar maps which are defined by assigning weights to their faces. The paper presents a threefold contribution to the theory. Firstly, we prove the existence of the local limit for all choices of weights and describe it in terms of an infinite mobile. Secondly, we show that the local limit is in all cases almost surely recurrent. And thirdly, we show that for certain choices of weights the local limit has exactly one face of infinite degree and has in that case spectral dimension $4/3$ (the latter requires a mild moment condition).
We discuss the asymptotic behaviour of random critical Boltzmann planar maps in which the degree of a typical face belongs to the domain of attraction of a stable law with index $α\in (1,2]$. We prove that when conditioning such maps to have $n$ vertices, or $n$ edges, or $n$ faces, the vertex-set endowed with the graph distance suitably rescaled converges in distribution towards the celebrated Brownian map when $α=2$, and, after extraction of a subsequence, towards another `$α$-stable map' when $α<2$, which improves on a first result due to Le Gall & Miermont who assumed slightly more regular…
The existence of the weak limit as n --> infinity of the uniform measure on rooted triangulations of the sphere with n vertices is proved. Some properties of the limit are studied. In particular, the limit is a probability measure on random triangulations of the plane.
The main goal of this paper is to determine the asymptotic behavior of the number $X_n$ of cut-vertices in random planar maps with $n$ edges. It is shown that $X_n/n \to c$ in probability (for some explicit $c>0$). For so-called subcritical classes of planar maps (like outerplanar maps) we obtain a central limit theorem, too. Interestingly the combinatorics behind this seemingly simple problem is quite involved.
We introduce the set of (non-spanning) tree-decorated planar maps, and show that they are in bijection with the Cartesian product between the set of trees and the set of maps with a simple boundary. As a consequence, we count the number of tree decorated triangulations and quadrangulations with a given amount of faces and for a given size of the tree. Finally, we generalise the bijection to study other types of decorated planar maps and obtain explicit counting formulas for them.
We consider planar maps adjusted with a (regular critical) Boltzmann distribution and show that the expected number of pattern occurrences of a given map is asymptotically linear when the number n of edges goes to infinity. The main ingredient for the proof is an extension of a formula by Liskovets (1999).
We find precise asymptotic estimates for the number of planar maps and graphs with a condition on the minimum degree, and properties of random graphs from these classes. In particular we show that the size of the largest tree attached to the core of a random planar graph is of order c log(n) for an explicit constant c. These results provide new information on the structure of random planar graphs.
Stephenson~(2018) established annealed local convergence of Boltzmann planar maps conditioned to be large. The present work uses results on rerooted multi-type branching trees to prove a quenched version of this limit.
We show that the (random) Riemann surfaces of the Angel-Schramm Uniform Infinite Planar Triangulation and of Sheffield's infinite necklace construction are both parabolic. In other words, Brownian motion on these surfaces is recurrent. We obtain this result as a corollary to a more general theorem on subsequential distributional limits of random unbiased disc triangulations, following work of Benjamini and Schramm.
The peeling process, which describes a step-by-step exploration of a planar map, has been instrumental in addressing percolation problems on random infinite planar maps. Bond and face percolation on maps with faces of arbitrary degree are conveniently studied via so-called lazy-peeling explorations. During such explorations distinct vertices on the exploration contour may at later stage be identified, making the process less suited to the study of site percolation. To tackle this situation and to explicitly identify site-percolation thresholds, we come back to the alternative "simple" peeling …
We consider bipolar oriented random planar maps with heavy-tailed face degrees. We show for each $α\in (1,2)$ that if the face degree is in the domain of attraction of an $α$-stable Lévy process, the corresponding random planar map has an infinite volume limit in the Benjamini-Schramm topology. We also show in the limit that the properly rescaled contour functions associated with the northwest and southeast trees converge in law to a certain correlated pair of $α$-stable Lévy processes. Combined with other work, this allows us to identify the scaling limit of the planar map with an SLE$_κ(ρ)$ …
We consider a natural local dynamic on the set of all rooted planar maps with $n$ edges that is in some sense analogous to "edge flip" Markov chains, which have been considered before on a variety of combinatorial structures (triangulations of the $n$-gon and quadrangulations of the sphere, among others). We provide the first polynomial upper bound for the mixing time of this "edge rotation" chain on planar maps: we show that the spectral gap of the edge rotation chain is bounded below by an appropriate constant times $n^{-11/2}$. In doing so, we provide a partially new proof of the fact that …
We consider several aspects of the scaling limit of percolation on random planar triangulations, both finite and infinite. The equivalents for random maps of Cardy's formula for the limit under scaling of various crossing probabilities are given. The limit probabilities are expressed in terms of simple events regarding Airy-Levy processes. Some explicit formulas for limit probabilities follow from this relation by applying known results on stable processes. Conversely, natural symmetries of the random maps imply identities concerning the Airy-Levy processes.
We study geodesics in the random metric space called the Brownian map, which appears as the scaling limit of large planar maps. In particular, we completely describe geodesics starting from the distinguished point called the root, and we characterize the set S of all points that are connected to the root by more than one geodesic. The set S is dense in the Brownian map and homeomorphic to a non-compact real tree. Furthermore, for every x in S, the number of distinct geodesics from x to the root is equal to the number of connected components of the complement of {x} in S. In particular, points …
We present a way to study the conformal structure of random planar maps. The main idea is to explore the map along an SLE (Schramm--Loewner evolution) process of parameter $ κ= 6$ and to combine the locality property of the SLE_{6} together with the spatial Markov property of the underlying lattice in order to get a non-trivial geometric information. We follow this path in the case of the conformal structure of random triangulations with a boundary. Under a reasonable assumption called (*) that we have unfortunately not been able to verify, we prove that the limit of uniformized random planar …
We give bijections between bipolar-oriented (acyclic with unique source and sink) planar maps and certain random walks, which show that the uniformly random bipolar-oriented planar map, decorated by the "peano curve" surrounding the tree of left-most paths to the sink, converges in law with respect to the peanosphere topology to a $\sqrt{4/3}$-Liouville quantum gravity surface decorated by an independent Schramm-Loewner evolution with parameter $κ=12$ (i.e., SLE$_{12}$). This result is universal in the sense that it holds for bipolar-oriented triangulations, quadrangulations, $k$-angulations, …
We survey the theory and applications of mating-of-trees bijections for random planar maps and their continuum analog: the mating-of-trees theorem of Duplantier, Miller, and Sheffield (2014). The latter theorem gives an encoding of a Liouville quantum gravity (LQG) surface decorated by a Schramm-Loewner evolution (SLE) curve in terms of a pair of correlated linear Brownian motions. We assume minimal familiarity with the theory of SLE and LQG. Mating-of-trees theory enables one to reduce problems about SLE and LQG to problems about Brownian motion and leads to deep rigorous connections between …
We prove that the simple random walk on the uniform infinite planar triangulation (UIPT) typically travels graph distance at most $n^{1/4 + o_n(1)}$ in $n$ units of time. Together with the complementary lower bound proven by Gwynne and Miller (2017) this shows that the typical graph distance displacement of the walk after $n$ steps is $n^{1/4 + o_n(1)}$, as conjectured by Benjamini and Curien (2013). More generally, we show that the simple random walks on a certain family of random planar maps in the $γ$-Liouville quantum gravity (LQG) universality class for $γ\in (0,2)$---including spanning t…
This habilitation thesis summarizes the research that I have carried out from 2005 to 2019. It is organized in four chapters. The first three deal with random planar maps. Chapter 1 is about their metric properties: from a general map-mobile bijection, we compute the three-point function of quadrangulations, before discussing the connection with continued fractions. Chapter 2 presents the slice decomposition, a unified bijective approach that applies notably to irreducible maps. Chapter 3 concerns the $O(n)$ loop model on planar maps: by a combinatorial decomposition, we obtain the phase diagr…
We address the six vertex model on a random lattice, which in combinatorial terms corresponds to the enumeration of weighted 4-valent planar maps equipped with an Eulerian orientation. This problem was exactly, albeit non-rigorously solved by Ivan Kostov in 2000 using matrix integral techniques. We convert Kostov's work to a combinatorial argument involving functional equations coming from recursive decompositions of the maps, which we solve rigorously using complex analysis. We then investigate modular properties of the solution, which lead to simplifications in certain special cases. In part…
We start by studying a peeling process on finite random planar maps with faces of arbitrary degrees determined by a general weight sequence, which satisfies an admissibility criterion. The corresponding perimeter process is identified as a biased random walk, in terms of which the admissibility criterion has a very simple interpretation. The finite random planar maps under consideration were recently proved to possess a well-defined local limit known as the infinite Boltzmann planar map (IBPM). Inspired by recent work of Curien and Le Gall, we show that the peeling process on the IBPM can be o…
