The existence of the weak limit as n --> infinity of the uniform measure on rooted triangulations of the sphere with n vertices is proved. Some properties of the limit are studied. In particular, the limit is a probability measure on random triangulations of the plane.
A construction as a growth process for sampling of the uniform infinite planar triangulation (UIPT), defined in a previous paper, is given. The construction is algorithmic in nature, and is an efficient method of sampling a portion of the UIPT. By analyzing the progress rate of the growth process we show that a.s. the UIPT has growth rate r^4 up to polylogarithmic factors, confirming heuristic results from the physics literature. Additionally, the boundary component of the ball of radius r separating it from infinity a.s. has growth rate r^2 up to polylogarithmic factors. It is also shown that…
We prove that properly rescaled large planar Eulerian triangulations converge to the Brownian map. This result requires more than a standard application of the methods that have been used to obtain the convergence of other families of planar maps to the Brownian map, as the natural distance for Eulerian triangulations is a canonical oriented pseudo-distance. To circumvent this difficulty, we adapt the layer decomposition method established by Curien and Le Gall, which yields asymptotic proportionality between three natural distances on planar Eulerian triangulations: the usual graph distance, …
We introduce the Incipient Infinite Cluster (IIC) in the critical Bernoulli site percolation model on the Uniform Infinite Half-Planar Triangulation (UIHPT), which is the local limit of large random triangulations with a boundary. The IIC is defined from the UIHPT by conditioning the open percolation cluster of the origin to be infinite. We prove that the IIC can be obtained by adding within the UIHPT an infinite triangulation with a boundary whose distribution is explicit.
Via circle pattern techniques, random planar triangulations (with angle variables) are mapped onto Delaunay triangulations in the complex plane. The uniform measure on triangulations is mapped onto a conformally invariant spatial point process. We show that this measure can be expressed as: (1) a sum over 3-spanning-trees partitions of the edges of the Delaunay triangulations; (2) the volume form of a Kähler metric over the space of Delaunay triangulations, whose prepotential has a simple formulation in term of ideal tessellations of the 3d hyperbolic space; (3) a discretized version (involvin…
We study the simple random walk on stochastic hyperbolic half planar triangulations constructed in Angel and Ray [3]. We show that almost surely the walker escapes the boundary of the map in positive speed and that the return probability to the starting point after n steps scales like $\exp(-cn^{1/3})$.
Pursuing the approach of Angel & Ray, we introduce and study a family of random infinite triangulations of the full-plane that satisfy a natural spatial Markov property. These new random lattices naturally generalize Angel & Schramm's Uniform Infinite Planar Triangulation (UIPT) and are hyperbolic in flavor. We prove that they exhibit a sharp exponential volume growth, are non-Liouville, and that the simple random walk on them has positive speed almost surely. We conjecture that these infinite triangulations are the local limits of uniform triangulations whose genus is proportional to the size…
In this note we show that a bounded degree planar triangulation is recurrent if and only if the set of accumulation points of some/any circle packing of it is polar (that is, planar Brownian motion avoids it with probability 1). This generalizes a theorem of He and Schramm [6] who proved it when the set of accumulation points is either empty or a Jordan curve, in which case the graph has one end. We also show that this statement holds for any straight-line embedding with angles uniformly bounded away from 0.
We analyze the geometry of domain Markov half planar triangulations. In \cite{AR13} it is shown that there exists a one-parameter family of measures supported on half planar triangulations satisfying translation invariance and domain Markov property. We study the geometry of these maps and show that they exhibit a sharp phase-transition in view of their geometry at $α= 2/3$. For $α<2/3$, the maps form a tree-like stricture with infinitely many small cut-sets. For $α> 2/3$, we obtain maps of hyperbolic nature with exponential growth and anchored expansion. Some results about the geometry of per…
We establish a connection between the uniform infinite planar triangulation and some critical time-reversed branching process. This allows to find a scaling limit for the principal boundary component of a ball of radius R for large R (i.e. for a boundary component separating the ball from infinity). We show also that outside of R-ball a contour exists that has length linear in R.
We introduce a growth process which samples sections of uniform infinite causal triangulations by elementary moves in which a single triangle is added. A relation to a random walk on the integer half line is shown. This relation is used to estimate the geodesic distance of a given triangle to the rooted boundary in terms of the time of the growth process and to determine from this the fractal dimension. Furthermore, convergence of the boundary process to a diffusion process is shown leading to an interesting duality relation between the growth process and a corresponding branching process.
Given a finite simple triangulation, we estimate the sizes of circles in its circle packing in terms of Cannon's vertex extremal length. Our estimates provide control over the size of the largest circle in the packing. We use them, combined with results from [12], to prove that in a proper circle packing of the discrete mating-of-trees random map model of Duplantier, Gwynne, Miller and Sheffield, the size of the largest circle goes to zero with high probability.
Let $X:=X_n\cup\{(0,0),(1,0)\}$, where $X_n$ is a planar Poisson point process of intensity $n$. We provide a first non-trivial lower bound for the distance between the expected length of the shortest path between $(0,0)$ and $(1,0)$ in the Delaunay triangulation associated with $X$ when the intensity of $X_n$ goes to infinity. Experimental values indicate that the correct value is about 1.04. We also prove that the expected number of Delaunay edges crossed by the line segment $[(0,0),(1,0)]$ is equivalent to $2.16\sqrt{n}$ and that the expected length of a particular path converges to 1.18 gi…
We set the foundation for a series of works aimed at proving strong relations between uniform random planar maps and Liouville quantum gravity (LQG). Our method relies on a bijective encoding of site-percolated planar triangulations by certain 2D lattice paths. Our bijection parallels in the discrete setting the \emph{mating-of-trees} framework of LQG and Schramm-Loewner evolutions (SLE) introduced by Duplantier, Miller, and Sheffield. Combining these two correspondences allows us to relate uniform site-percolated triangulations to $\sqrt{8/3}$-LQG and SLE$_6$. In particular, we establish the …
We classify completely the infinite, planar triangulations satisfying a weak spatial Markov property, without assuming one-endedness nor finiteness of vertex degrees. In particular, the Uniform Infinite Planar Triangulation (UIPT) is the only such triangulation with average degree 6. As a consequence, we prove that the convergence of uniform triangulations of the sphere to the UIPT is robust, in the sense that it is preserved under various perturbations of the uniform measure. As another application, we obtain large deviation estimates for the number of occurencies of a pattern in uniform tria…
We present a way to study the conformal structure of random planar maps. The main idea is to explore the map along an SLE (Schramm--Loewner evolution) process of parameter $ κ= 6$ and to combine the locality property of the SLE_{6} together with the spatial Markov property of the underlying lattice in order to get a non-trivial geometric information. We follow this path in the case of the conformal structure of random triangulations with a boundary. Under a reasonable assumption called (*) that we have unfortunately not been able to verify, we prove that the limit of uniformized random planar …
We consider an embedding of planar maps into an equilateral triangle $Δ$ which we call the Cardy embedding. The embedding is a discrete approximation of a conformal map based on percolation observables that are used in Smirnov's proof of Cardy's formula. Under the Cardy embedding, the planar map induces a metric and an area measure on $Δ$ and a boundary measure on $\partial Δ$. We prove that for uniformly sampled triangulations, the metric and the measures converge jointly in the scaling limit to the Brownian disk conformally embedded into $Δ$ (i.e., to the $\sqrt{8/3}$-Liouville quantum gravi…
We develop a method to compute the generating function of the number of vertices inside certain regions of the Uniform Infinite Planar Triangulation (UIPT). The computations are mostly combinatorial in flavor and the main tool is the decomposition of the UIPT into layers, called the skeleton decomposition, introduced by Krikun. In particular, we get explicit formulas for the generating functions of the number of vertices inside hulls (or completed metric balls) centered around the root, and the number of vertices inside geodesic slices of these hulls. We also recover known results about the sc…
In this paper, the scaling limit of random connected cubic planar graphs (respectively multigraphs) is shown to be the Brownian sphere. The proof consists in essentially two main steps. First, thanks to the known decomposition of cubic planar graphs into their 3-connected components, the metric structure of a random cubic planar graph is shown to be well approximated by its unique 3-connected component of linear size, with modified distances. Then, Whitney's theorem ensures that a 3-connected cubic planar graph is the dual of a simple triangulation, for which it is known that the scaling limit…
It is known that for every $α\geq 1$ there is a planar triangulation in which every ball of radius $r$ has size $Θ(r^α)$. We prove that for $α<2$ every such triangulation is quasi-isometric to a tree. The result extends to Riemannian 2-manifolds of finite genus, and to large-scale-simply-connected graphs. We also prove that every planar triangulation of asymptotic dimension 1 is quasi-isometric to a tree.
We study site percolation on Angel & Schramm's uniform infinite planar triangulation. We compute several critical and near-critical exponents, and describe the scaling limit of the boundary of large percolation clusters in all regimes (subcritical, critical and supercritical). We prove in particular that the scaling limit of the boundary of large critical percolation clusters is the random stable looptree of index 3/2, which was introduced in a companion paper. We also give a conjecture linking looptrees of any index in (1,2) with scaling limits of cluster boundaries in random triangulations d…
We introduce an ensemble of infinite causal triangulations, called the uniform infinite causal triangulation, and show that it is equivalent to an ensemble of infinite trees, the uniform infinite planar tree. It is proved that in both cases the Hausdorff dimension almost surely equals 2. The infinite causal triangulations are shown to be almost surely recurrent or, equivalently, their spectral dimension is almost surely less than or equal to 2. We also establish that for certain reduced versions of the infinite causal triangulations the spectral dimension equals 2 both for the ensemble average…
We show that the (random) Riemann surfaces of the Angel-Schramm Uniform Infinite Planar Triangulation and of Sheffield's infinite necklace construction are both parabolic. In other words, Brownian motion on these surfaces is recurrent. We obtain this result as a corollary to a more general theorem on subsequential distributional limits of random unbiased disc triangulations, following work of Benjamini and Schramm.
In this thesis a connection between the worlds of discrete and continuous conformal geometry is explored. Specifically, a disk pattern production theroem is proved using an energy which measures how ``uniform'' the angle data of a triangulation is, see also math.DG/0002150. Then this energy is averaged over all the Delaunay triangulation of a Riemannian surface to form an energy measuring how ``uniform'' a metric is, see also math.DG/0010316.
We provide "growth schemes" for inductively generating uniform random $2p$-angulations of the sphere with $n$ faces, as well as uniform random simple triangulations of the sphere with $2n$ faces. In the case of $2p$-angulations, we provide a way to insert a new face at a random location in a uniform $2p$-angulation with $n$ faces in such a way that the new map is precisely a uniform $2p$-angulation with $n+1$ faces. Similarly, given a uniform simple triangulation of the sphere with $2n$ faces, we describe a way to insert two new adjacent triangles so as to obtain a uniform simple triangulation…
We give a short proof that a uniform noncrossing partition of the regular $n$-gon weakly converges toward Aldous's Brownian triangulation of the disk, in the sense of the Hausdorff topology. This result was first obtained by Curien & Kortchemski, using a more complicated encoding. Thanks to a result of Marchal on strong convergence of Dyck paths toward the Brownian excursion, we furthermore give an algorithm that allows to recursively construct a sequence of uniform noncrossing partitions for which the previous convergence holds almost surely. In addition, we also treat the case of uniform non…
Stack-triangulations appear as natural objects when one wants to define some increasing families of triangulations by successive additions of faces. We investigate the asymptotic behavior of rooted stack-triangulations with $2n$ faces under two different distributions. We show that the uniform distribution on this set of maps converges, for a topology of local convergence, to a distribution on the set of infinite maps. In the other hand, we show that rescaled by $n^{1/2}$, they converge for the Gromov-Hausdorff topology on metric spaces to the continuum random tree introduced by Aldous. Under …
A simple way to sample a uniform triangulation of the sphere with a fixed number $n$ of vertices is a Monte-Carlo method: we start from an arbitrary triangulation and flip repeatedly a uniformly chosen edge. We give a lower bound in $n^{5/4}$ on the mixing time of this Markov chain.
We are interested in the cycles obtained by slicing at all heights random Boltzmann triangulations with a simple boundary. We establish a functional invariance principle for the lengths of these cycles, appropriately rescaled, as the size of the boundary grows. The limiting process is described using a self-similar growth-fragmentation process with explicit parameters. To this end, we introduce a branching peeling exploration of Boltzmann triangulations, which allows us to identify a crucial martingale involving the perimeters of cycles at given heights. We also use a recent result concerning …
We study the structure of infinite geodesics in the Planar Stochastic Hyperbolic Triangulations $\mathbb{T}_λ$, which are the hyperbolic analogs of the UIPT. We prove that these geodesics form a supercritical Galton--Watson tree with geometric offspring distribution. The tree of infinite geodesics in $\mathbb{T}_λ$ provides a new notion of boundary, which is a realization of the Poisson boundary. By scaling limits arguments, we also obtain a description of the tree of infinite geodesics in the hyperbolic Brownian plane. Finally, by combining our main result with a forthcoming paper, we obtain …
We formulate conjectures regarding percolation on planar triangulations suggested by assuming (quasi) invariance under coarse conformal uniformization.
Let $M_n$ be a simple triangulation of the sphere $S^2$, drawn uniformly at random from all such triangulations with n vertices. Endow $M_n$ with the uniform probability measure on its vertices. After rescaling graph distance on $V(M_n)$ by $(3/(4n))^{1/4}$, the resulting random measured metric space converges in distribution, in the Gromov-Hausdorff-Prokhorov sense, to the Brownian map. In proving the preceding fact, we introduce a labelling function for the vertices of $M_n$. Under this labelling, distances to a distinguished point are essentially given by vertex labels, with an error given …
Planar graph navigation is an important problem with significant implications to both point location in geometric data structures and routing in networks. However, whilst a number of algorithms and existence proofs have been proposed, very little analysis is available for the properties of the paths generated and the computational resources required to generate them under a random distribution hypothesis for the input. In this paper we analyse a new deterministic planar navigation algorithm with constant competitiveness which follows vertex adjacencies in the Delaunay triangulation. We call th…
We study the scaling limit of essentially simple triangulations on the torus. We consider, for every $n\geq 1$, a uniformly random triangulation $G_n$ over the set of (appropriately rooted) essentially simple triangulations on the torus with $n$ vertices. We view $G_n$ as a metric space by endowing its set of vertices with the graph distance denoted by $d_{G_n}$ and show that the random metric space $(V(G_n),n^{-1/4}d_{G_n})$ converges in distribution in the Gromov-Hausdorff sense when $n$ goes to infinity, at least along subsequences, toward a random metric space. One of the crucial steps in …
