The infinite discrete stable Boltzmann maps are generalisations of the well-known Uniform Infinite Planar Quadrangulation in the case where large degree faces are allowed. We show that the simple random walk on these random lattices is always subdiffusive with exponent less than 1/3. Our method is based on stationarity and geometric estimates obtained via the peeling process which are of own interest.
Stephenson~(2018) established annealed local convergence of Boltzmann planar maps conditioned to be large. The present work uses results on rerooted multi-type branching trees to prove a quenched version of this limit.
We discuss duality properties of critical Boltzmann planar maps such that the degree of a typical face is in the domain of attraction of a stable distribution with parameter $α\in(1,2]$. We consider the critical Bernoulli bond percolation model on a Boltzmann map in the dilute and generic regimes $α\in (3/2,2]$, and show that the open percolation cluster of the origin is itself a Boltzmann map in the dense regime $α\in (1,3/2)$, with parameter \[α':= \frac{2α+3}{4α-2}.\] This is the counterpart in random planar maps of the duality property $κ\leftrightarrow 16/κ$ of Schramm-Loewner Evolutions …
We start by studying a peeling process on finite random planar maps with faces of arbitrary degrees determined by a general weight sequence, which satisfies an admissibility criterion. The corresponding perimeter process is identified as a biased random walk, in terms of which the admissibility criterion has a very simple interpretation. The finite random planar maps under consideration were recently proved to possess a well-defined local limit known as the infinite Boltzmann planar map (IBPM). Inspired by recent work of Curien and Le Gall, we show that the peeling process on the IBPM can be o…
We are interested in the cycles obtained by slicing at all heights random Boltzmann triangulations with a simple boundary. We establish a functional invariance principle for the lengths of these cycles, appropriately rescaled, as the size of the boundary grows. The limiting process is described using a self-similar growth-fragmentation process with explicit parameters. To this end, we introduce a branching peeling exploration of Boltzmann triangulations, which allows us to identify a crucial martingale involving the perimeters of cycles at given heights. We also use a recent result concerning …
We consider planar maps adjusted with a (regular critical) Boltzmann distribution and show that the expected number of pattern occurrences of a given map is asymptotically linear when the number n of edges goes to infinity. The main ingredient for the proof is an extension of a formula by Liskovets (1999).
The peeling process, which describes a step-by-step exploration of a planar map, has been instrumental in addressing percolation problems on random infinite planar maps. Bond and face percolation on maps with faces of arbitrary degree are conveniently studied via so-called lazy-peeling explorations. During such explorations distinct vertices on the exploration contour may at later stage be identified, making the process less suited to the study of site percolation. To tackle this situation and to explicitly identify site-percolation thresholds, we come back to the alternative "simple" peeling …
We discuss the asymptotic behaviour of random critical Boltzmann planar maps in which the degree of a typical face belongs to the domain of attraction of a stable law with index $α\in (1,2]$. We prove that when conditioning such maps to have $n$ vertices, or $n$ edges, or $n$ faces, the vertex-set endowed with the graph distance suitably rescaled converges in distribution towards the celebrated Brownian map when $α=2$, and, after extraction of a subsequence, towards another `$α$-stable map' when $α<2$, which improves on a first result due to Le Gall & Miermont who assumed slightly more regular…
The infinite discrete stable Boltzmann maps are "heavy-tailed" generalisations of the well-known Uniform Infinite Planar Quadrangulation. Very efficient tools to study these objects are Markovian step-by-step explorations of the lattice called peeling processes. Such a process depends on an algorithm which selects at each step the next edge where the exploration continues. We prove here that, whatever this algorithm, a peeling process always reveals about the same portion of the map, thus growing roughly metric balls. Applied to well-designed algorithms, this easily enables us to compare dista…
We discuss asymptotics for the boundary of critical Boltzmann planar maps under the assumption that the distribution of the degree of a typical face is in the domain of attraction of a stable distribution with parameter $α\in (1,2)$. First, in the dense phase corresponding to $α\in(1,3/2)$, we prove that the scaling limit of the boundary is the random stable looptree with parameter $(α-1/2)^{-1}$. Second, we show the existence of a phase transition through local limits of the boundary: in the dense phase, the boundary is tree-like, while in the dilute phase corresponding to $α\in(3/2,2)$, it h…
We prove that the simple random walk on the uniform infinite planar triangulation (UIPT) typically travels graph distance at most $n^{1/4 + o_n(1)}$ in $n$ units of time. Together with the complementary lower bound proven by Gwynne and Miller (2017) this shows that the typical graph distance displacement of the walk after $n$ steps is $n^{1/4 + o_n(1)}$, as conjectured by Benjamini and Curien (2013). More generally, we show that the simple random walks on a certain family of random planar maps in the $γ$-Liouville quantum gravity (LQG) universality class for $γ\in (0,2)$---including spanning t…
We study the simple random walk on the Uniform Infinite Half-Plane Map, which is the local limit of critical Boltzmann planar maps with a large and simple boundary. We prove that the simple random walk is recurrent, and that the resistance between the root and the boundary of the hull of radius $r$ is at least of order $\log r$. This resistance bound is expected to be sharp, and is better than those following from previous proofs of recurrence for non bounded-degree planar maps models. Our main tools are the self-duality of uniform planar maps, a classical lemma about duality of resistances an…
We introduce a one-parameter family of random infinite quadrangulations of the half-plane, which we call the uniform infinite half-planar quadrangulations with skewness (UIHPQ$_p$ for short, with $p\in[0,1/2]$ measuring the skewness). They interpolate between Kesten's tree corresponding to $p=0$ and the usual UIHPQ with a general boundary corresponding to $p=1/2$. As we make precise, these models arise as local limits of uniform quadrangulations with a boundary when their volume and perimeter grow in a properly fine-tuned way, and they represent all local limits of (sub)critical Boltzmann quad…
We study the geometry of infinite random Boltzmann planar maps having weight of polynomial decay of order $k^{-2}$ for each vertex of degree $k$. These correspond to the dual of the discrete "stable maps" of Le Gall and Miermont [Scaling limits of random planar maps with large faces, Ann. Probab. 39, 1 (2011), 1-69] studied in [Budd & Curien, Geometry of infinite planar maps with high degrees, Electron. J. Probab. (to appear)] related to a symmetric Cauchy process, or alternatively to the maps obtained after taking the gasket of a critical $O(2)$-loop model on a random planar map. We show that…
We study the asymptotic behaviour of uniform random maps with a prescribed face-degree sequence, in the bipartite case, as the number of faces tends to infinity. Under mild assumptions, we show that, properly rescaled, such maps converge in distribution towards the Brownian map in the Gromov-Hausdorff sense. This result encompasses a previous one of Le Gall for uniform random $q$-angulations where $q$ is an even integer. It applies also to random maps sampled from a Boltzmann distribution, under a second moment assumption only, conditioned to be large in either of the sense of the number of ed…
We study the scaling limits of looptrees associated with Bienaymé--Galton--Watson (BGW) trees, that are obtained by replacing every vertex of the tree by a "cycle" whose size is its degree. First, we consider BGW trees whose offspring distribution is critical and in the domain of attraction of a Gaussian distribution. We prove that the Brownian CRT is the scaling limit of the associated looptrees, thereby confirming a prediction of [CK14b]. Then, we deal with BGW trees whose offspring distribution is critical and heavy-tailed. We show that the scaling limit of the associated looptrees is a mul…
We prove that the random simple cubic planar graph $\mathsf{C}_n$ with an even number $n$ of vertices admits a novel uniform infinite cubic planar graph (UICPG) as quenched local limit. We describe how the limit may be constructed by a series of random blow-up operations applied to the dual map of the type~III Uniform Infinite Planar Triangulation established by Angel and Schramm (Comm. Math. Phys., 2003). Our main technical lemma is a contiguity relation between $\mathsf{C}_n$ and a model where the networks inserted at the links of the largest $3$-connected component of $\mathsf{C}_n$ are rep…
We study the geometry of infinite random Boltzmann planar maps with vertices of high degree. These correspond to the duals of the Boltzmann maps associated to a critical weight sequence $(q_{k})_{ k \geq 0}$ for the faces with polynomial decay $k^{-a}$ with $a \in ( 3/2, 5/2)$ which have been studied by Le Gall & Miermont as well as by Borot, Bouttier & Guitter. We show the existence of a phase transition for the geometry of these maps at $a = 2$. In the dilute phase corresponding to $a \in (2, 5/2)$ we prove that the volume of the ball of radius $r$ (for the graph distance) is of order $r^{\m…
We study the percolation model on Boltzmann triangulations using a generating function approach. More precisely, we consider a Boltzmann model on the set of finite planar triangulations, together with a percolation configuration (either site-percolation or bond-percolation) on this triangulation. By enumerating triangulations with boundaries according to both the boundary length and the number of vertices/edges on the boundary, we are able to identify a phase transition for the geometry of the origin cluster. For instance, we show that the probability that a percolation interface has length n …
We show that large critical multi-type Galton-Watson trees, when conditioned to be large, converge locally in distribution to an infinite tree which is analoguous to Kesten's infinite monotype Galton-Watson tree. This is proven when we condition on the number of vertices of one fixed types, and with an extra technical assumption if we count at least two types. We then apply these results to study local limits of random planar maps, showing that large critical Boltzmann-distributed random maps converge in distribution to an infinite map.
We extend the peeling exploration introduced in arxiv:1506.01590 to the setting of Boltzmann planar maps coupled to a rigid $O(n)$ loop model. Its law is related to a class of discrete Markov processes obtained by confining random walks to the positive integers with a new type of boundary condition. As an application we give a rigorous justification of the phase diagram of the model presented in arXiv:1106.0153. This entails two results pertaining to the so-called fixed-point equation: the first asserts that any solution determines a well-defined model, while the second result, contributed by …
The purpose of the present work is twofold. First, we develop the theory of general self-similar growth-fragmentation processes by focusing on martingales which appear naturally in this setting and by recasting classical results for branching random walks in this framework. In particular, we establish many-to-one formulas for growth-fragmentations and define the notion of intrinsic area of a growth-fragmentation. Second, we identify a distinguished family of growth-fragmentations closely related to stable Lévy processes, which are then shown to arise as the scaling limit of the perimeter proce…
We study a configuration model on bipartite planar maps in which, given $n$ even integers, one samples a planar map with $n$ faces uniformly at random with these face degrees. We prove that when suitably rescaled, such maps always admit nontrivial subsequential limits as $n \to \infty$ in the Gromov-Hausdorff-Prokhorov topology. Further, we show that they converge in distribution towards the celebrated Brownian sphere, and more generally a Brownian disk for maps with a boundary, if and only if there is no inner face with a macroscopic degree, or, if the perimeter is too big, the maps degenerat…
We study a model of random $\mathcal{R}$-enriched trees that is based on weights on the $\mathcal{R}$-structures and allows for a unified treatment of a large family of random discrete structures. We establish distributional limits describing local convergence around fixed and random points in this general context, limit theorems for component sizes when $\mathcal{R}$ is a composite class, and a Gromov--Hausdorff scaling limit of random metric spaces patched together from independently drawn metrics on the $\mathcal{R}$-structures. Our main applications treat a selection of examples encompasse…
We investigate the geometry of a typical spin cluster in random triangulations sampled with a probability proportional to the energy of an Ising configuration on their vertices, both in the finite and infinite volume settings. This model is known to undergo a combinatorial phase transition at an explicit critical temperature, for which its partition function has a different asymptotic behavior than uniform maps. The purpose of this work is to give geometric evidence of this phase transition. In the infinite volume setting, called the Infinite Ising Planar Triangulation, we exhibit a phase tran…
