For every $k\in \mathbb{N}$, we produce a set of integers which is $k$-recurrent but not $(k+1)$-recurrent. This extends a result of Furstenberg who produced a 1-recurrent set which is not 2-recurrent. We discuss a similar result for convergence of multiple ergodic averages. Finally, we also point out a combinatorial consequence related to Szemer\' edi's theorem.
Recurrence properties of systems and associated sets of integers that suffice for recurrence are classical objects in topological dynamics. We describe relations between recurrence in different sorts of systems, study ways to formulate finite versions of recurrence, and describe connections to combinatorial problems. In particular, we show that sets of Bohr recurrence (meaning sets of recurrence for rotations) suffice for recurrence in nilsystems. Additionally, we prove an extension of this property for multiple recurrence in affine systems.
The Khintchine recurrence theorem asserts that on a measure preserving system, for every set $A$ and $\varepsilon>0$, we have $μ(A\cap T^{-n}A)\geq μ(A)^2-\varepsilon$ for infinitely many $n\in \mathbb{N}$. We show that there are systems having under-recurrent sets $A$, in the sense that the inequality $μ(A\cap T^{-n}A)< μ(A)^2$ holds for every $n\in \mathbb{N}$. In particular, all ergodic systems of positive entropy have under-recurrent sets. On the other hand, answering a question of V.~Bergelson, we show that not all mixing systems have under-recurrent sets. We also study variants of these …
We study recurrence and non-recurrence sets for dynamical systems on compact spaces, in particular for products of rotations on the unit circle T. A set of integers is called r-Bohr if it is recurrent for all products of r rotations on T, and Bohr if it is recurrent for all products of rotations on T. It is a result due to Katznelson that for each r there exist sets of integers which are r-Bohr but not (r+1)-Bohr. We present new examples of r-Bohr sets which are not Bohr, thanks to a construction which is both flexible and completely explicit. Our results are related to an old combinatorial pr…
We establish new results on sets of recurrence and van der Corput sets in Z^k which refine and unify some of the previous results obtained by Sarkozy, Furstenberg, Kamae and Mendes France, and Bergelson and Lesigne. The proofs utilize a general equidistribution result involving prime powers which is of independent interest.
We study non-recurrence sets for weakly mixing dynamical systems by using linear dynamical systems. These are systems consisting of a bounded linear operator acting on a separable complex Banach space X, which becomes a probability space when endowed with a non-degenerate Gaussian measure. We generalize some recent results of Bergelson, del Junco, Lemańczyk and Rosenblatt, and show in particular that sets \{n_k\} such that n_{k+1}/{n_k} tends to infinity, or such that n_{k} divides n_{k+1} for each k, are non-recurrence sets for weakly mixing linear dynamical systems. We also give examples, fo…
In this paper, $d$-step almost automorphic systems are studied for $d\in\N$, which are the generalization of the classical almost automorphic ones. For a minimal topological dynamical system $(X,T)$ it is shown that the condition $x\in X$ is $d$-step almost automorphic can be characterized via various subsets of $\Z$ including the dual sets of $d$-step Poincaré and Birkhoff recurrence sets, and Nil$_d$ Bohr$_0$-sets by considering $N(x,V)=\{n\in\Z: T^nx\in V\}$, where $V$ is an arbitrary neighborhood of $x$. Moreover, it turns out that the condition $(x,y)\in X\times X$ is regionally proximal …
We show that every invertible strong mixing transformation on a Lebesgue space has strictly over-recurrent sets. Also, we give an explicit procedure for constructing strong mixing transformations with no under-recurrent sets. This answers both parts of a question of V. Bergelson. We define $ε$-over-recurrence and show that given $ε> 0$, any ergodic measure preserving invertible transformation (including discrete spectrum) has $ε$-over-recurrent sets of arbitrarily small measure. Discrete spectrum transformations and rotations do not have over-recurrent sets, but we construct a weak mixing rigi…
In this paper we study the quantitative recurrence properties of self-conformal sets $X$ equipped with the map $T:X\to X$ induced by the left shift. In particular, given a function $φ:\mathbb{N}\to(0,\infty),$ we study the metric properties of the set $$R(T,φ)=\left\{x\in X:|T^nx-x|<φ(n)\textrm{ for infinitely many }n\in \mathbb{N}\right\}.$$ Our main result shows that for the natural measure supported on $X$, $R(T,φ)$ has zero measure if a natural volume sum converges, and under the open set condition $R(T,φ)$ has full measure if this volume sum diverges.
We consider linear mappings on the $d$-dimensional torus, defined by $T(x) = Ax \pmod 1$, where $A$ is an invertible $d \times d$ integer matrix, with no eigenvalues on the unit circle. In the case $d = 2$ and $\det A = \pm 1$, we give a formula for the Hausdorff dimension of the set \[ \{ \, x \in \mathbb{T}^d : d (T^n (x), x) < e^{- αn} \text{ for infinitely many } n \, \}. \]
Using a structure theorem from [FG2010] we prove a version of multiple recurrence for sets of positive measure in a general stationary dynamical system.
The problem which can be viewed as the higher order version of an old question concerning Bohr sets is investigated: for any $d\in \N$ does the collection of $\{n\in \Z: S\cap (S-n)\cap...\cap (S-dn)\neq \emptyset\}$ with $S$ syndetic coincide with that of Nil$_d$ Bohr$_0$-sets? In this paper it is proved that Nil$_d$ Bohr$_0$-sets could be characterized via generalized polynomials, and applying this result one side of the problem could be answered affirmatively: for any Nil$_d$ Bohr$_0$-set $A$, there exists a syndetic set $S$ such that $A\supset \{n\in \Z: S\cap (S-n)\cap...\cap (S-dn)\neq \…
Let $K$ be a homogeneous self-similar set satisfying the strong separation condition. This paper is concerned with the quantitative recurrence properties of the natural map $T: K\rightarrow K$ induced by the shift. Let $μ$ be the natural self-similar measure supported on $K$. For a positive function $φ$ defined on $\mathbb{N}$, we show that the $μ$-measure of the following set \begin{equation*} R(φ):=\{x\in K: |T^n x-x|<φ(n) \; \text{for infinitely many} \; n\in\mathbb{N}\} \end{equation*} is null or full according to convergence or divergence of a certain series. Moreover, a similar dichotomy…
There are lots of results to study dynamical complexity on irregular sets and level sets of ergodic average from the perspective of density in base space, Hausdorff dimension, Lebesgue positive measure, positive or full topological entropy (and topological pressure) etc.. However, it is unknown from the viewpoint of chaos. There are lots of results on the relationship of positive topological entropy and various chaos but it is known that positive topological entropy does not imply a strong version of chaos called DC1 so that it is non-trivial to study DC1 on irregular sets and level sets. In t…
In the study of some dynamical systems the limsup set of a sequence of measurable sets is often of interest. The shrinking targets and recurrence are two of the most commonly studied problems that concern limsup sets. However, the zero-one laws for the shrinking targets and recurrence are usually treated separately and proved differently. In this paper, we introduce a generalized definition that can specialize into the shrinking targets and recurrence; our approach gives a unified proof of the zero-one laws for the two problems.
In this article, we consider hyperbolic rational maps restricted on thier Julia sets and study about the recurrence rate of typical orbits in arbitrarily small neighbourhoods around them and their relationship to the Hausdorff dimension of such small neighbourhoods.
We study the dynamical Borel-Cantelli lemma for recurrence sets in a measure preserving dynamical system $(X, μ, T)$ with a compatible metric $d$. We prove that, under some regularity conditions, the $μ$-measure of the following set \[ R(ψ)= \{x\in X : d(T^n x, x) < ψ(n)\ \text{for infinitely many}\ n\in\N \} \] obeys a zero-full law according to the convergence or divergence of a certain series, where $ψ:\N\to\R^+$. Some of the applications of our main theorem include the continued fractions dynamical systems, the beta dynamical systems, and the homogeneous self-similar sets.

In dynamical systems, shrinking target sets and pointwise recurrent sets are two important classes of dynamically defined subsets. In this article we introduce a mild condition on the linear parts of the affine mappings that allow us to bound the Hausdorff dimension of cylindrical shrinking target and recurrence sets. For generic self-affine sets in the sense of Falconer, that is by randomising the translation part of the affine maps, we prove that these bounds are sharp. These mild assumptions mean that our results significantly extend and complement the existing literature for recurrence on …

Following an approach presented by N. Frantzikinakis, B. Host and B. Kra, we show that the parameters in the multidimensional Szemerédi theorem for closest integer polynomials have non-empty intersection with the set of shifted primes $\mathbb{P}-1$ (or similarly of $\mathbb{P}+1$). Using the Furstenberg Correspondence Principle, we show this result by recasting it as a polynomial multiple recurrence result in measure ergodic theory. Furthermore, we obtain integer part polynomial convergence results by the same method, which is a transference principle that enables one to deduce results for $\…
Let $(X, \mathcal{B},μ,T)$ be an ergodic measure preserving system, $A \in \mathcal{B}$ and $ε>0$. We study the largeness of sets of the form \begin{equation*} \begin{split} S = \left\{ n\in\mathbb{N}\colonμ(A\cap T^{-f_1(n)}A\cap T^{-f_2(n)}A\cap\ldots\cap T^{-f_k(n)}A)> μ(A)^{k+1} - ε\right\} \end{split} \end{equation*} for various families $\{f_1,\dots,f_k\}$ of sequences $f_i\colon \mathbb{N} \to \mathbb{N}$. For $k \leq 3$ and $f_{i}(n)=i f(n)$, we show that $S$ has positive density if $f(n)=q(p_n)$ where $q \in \mathbb{Z}[x]$ satisfies $q(1)$ or $q(-1) =0$ and $p_n$ denotes the $n$-th pr…
We prove an abstract result establishing that one can obtain the convergence of Rare Events Point Processes counting the number of orbital visits to a sequence of shrinking target sets from the convergence of corresponding point processes for some induced system and matching shadowing shrinking sets inside the base of the inducing scheme. We apply this result to prove a dichotomy for two classes of non-uniformly hyperbolic interval maps: Misiurewicz quadratic maps and doubly intermittent maps. The dichotomy holds in the sense that the shrinking target sets may accumulate in any individual poin…

We construct, in locally compact, second countable, amenable groups, sets with large density that fail to have certain combinatorial properties. For the property of being a shift of a set of measurable recurrence we show that this is possible when the group does not have cocompact von Neumann kernel. For the stronger property of being piecewise-syndetic we show that this is always possible. For minimally almost periodic, locally compact, second countable, amenable groups, we prove that any dilation of a positive density set by an open neighborhood of the identity contains a set of measurable r…
We study sets of recurrence, in both measurable and topological settings, for actions of $(\mathbb{N},\times)$ and $(\mathbb{Q}^{>0},\times)$. In particular, we show that autocorrelation sequences of positive functions arising from multiplicative systems have positive additive averages. We also give criteria for when sets of the form $\{(an+b)^{\ell}/(cn+d)^{\ell}: n \in \mathbb{N}\}$ are sets of multiplicative recurrence, and consequently we recover two recent results in number theory regarding completely multiplicative functions and the Omega function.
A set $R\subset \mathbb{N}$ is called rational if it is well-approximable by finite unions of arithmetic progressions. Examples of rational sets include many classical sets of number-theoretical origin such as the set of squarefree numbers, the set of abundant numbers, or sets of the form $Φ_x:=\{n\in\mathbb{N}: \frac{\boldsymbolφ(n)}{n}<x\}$, where $x\in[0,1]$ and $\boldsymbolφ$ is Euler's totient function. We investigate the combinatorial and dynamical properties of rational sets and obtain new results in ergodic Ramsey theory. We show that if $R$ is a rational set with $\overline{d}(R)>0$, …
Two types of recurrence sets are introduced for inverse semigroup partial actions in topological spaces. We explore their connections with similar notions for related types of imperfect symmetries (prefix inverse semigroup expansions, partial group and groupoid actions).
Let $X$ be a zero-dimensional locally compact Hausdorff space not necessarily metric and $G$ a compactly generated topological group not necessarily abelian or countable. We define recurrence at a point for any continuous action of $G$ on $X$, and then, show that if $\overline{Gx}$ is compact for all $x\in X$, the conditions (i) this dynamics is pointwise recurrent, (ii) $X$ is a union of $G$-minimal sets, (iii) the $G$-orbit closure relation is closed in $X\times X$, and (iv) $X\ni x\mapsto \overline{Gx}\in 2^X$ is continuous, are pairwise equivalent. Consequently, if this dynamics is distal,…
We collect problems on recurrence for measure preserving and topological actions of a countable abelian group, considering combinatorial versions of these problems as well. We solve one of these problems by constructing, in $G_{2}:=\bigoplus_{n=1}^{\infty} \mathbb Z/2\mathbb Z$, a set $S$ such that every translate of $S$ is a set of topological recurrence, while $S$ is not a set of measurable recurrence. This construction answers negatively a variant of the following question asked by several authors: if $A\subset \mathbb Z$ has positive upper Banach density, must $A-A$ contain a Bohr neighbor…
In this paper we show how polynomial walks can be used to establish a twisted recurrence for sets of positive density in $\mathbb{Z}^d$. In particular, we prove that if $Γ\leq \operatorname{GL}_d(\mathbb{Z})$ is finitely generated by unipotents and acts irreducibly on $\mathbb{R}^d$, then for any set $B \subset \mathbb{Z}^d$ of positive density, there exists $k \geq 1$ such that for any $v \in k \mathbb{Z}^d$ one can find $γ\in Γ$ with $γv \in B - B$. Our method does not require the linearity of the action, and we prove a twisted recurrence for semigroups of maps from $\mathbb{Z}^d$ to $\mathb…
