Using a result of Behrend concerning sets without arithmetic progressions, we construct some examples of dynamical systems with slow time of multiple recurrence. Our theorem is a quatitative analog of Furstenberg's Correspondence Principle.
We prove a maximal-type large deviation principle for dynamical systems with arbitrarily slow polynomial mixing rates. Also several applications, particularly to billiard systems, are presented.
In the study of some dynamical systems the limsup set of a sequence of measurable sets is often of interest. The shrinking targets and recurrence are two of the most commonly studied problems that concern limsup sets. However, the zero-one laws for the shrinking targets and recurrence are usually treated separately and proved differently. In this paper, we introduce a generalized definition that can specialize into the shrinking targets and recurrence; our approach gives a unified proof of the zero-one laws for the two problems.
We study the dynamical Borel-Cantelli lemma for recurrence sets in a measure preserving dynamical system $(X, μ, T)$ with a compatible metric $d$. We prove that, under some regularity conditions, the $μ$-measure of the following set \[ R(ψ)= \{x\in X : d(T^n x, x) < ψ(n)\ \text{for infinitely many}\ n\in\N \} \] obeys a zero-full law according to the convergence or divergence of a certain series, where $ψ:\N\to\R^+$. Some of the applications of our main theorem include the continued fractions dynamical systems, the beta dynamical systems, and the homogeneous self-similar sets.
We show that, under suitable assumptions, Poincare recurrences of a dynamical system determine its topology in phase space. Therefore, dynamical systems with the same recurrences are topologically equivalent.
This paper is a first step in the study of the recurrence behavior in random dynamical systems and randomly perturbed dynamical systems. In particular we define a concept of quenched and annealed return times for systems generated by the composition of random maps. We moreover prove that for super-polynomially mixing systems, the random recurrence rate is equal to the local dimension of the stationary measure.
In this paper we study topological entropy and recurrence properties of non-autonomous dynamical system generated by a family of continuous self maps on a compact space X. Specially, we introduce the pseudo-entropy and periodic-pseudo-entropy and prove their equivalence with the topological entropy for non-autonomous dynamical systems.
For measure preserving dynamical systems on metric spaces we study the time needed by a typical orbit to return back close to its starting point. We prove that when the decay of correlation is super-polynomial the recurrence rates and the pointwise dimensions are equal. This gives a broad class of systems for which the recurrence rate equals the Hausdorff dimension of the invariant measure.
The only recurrence sequence satisfying the Fibonacci recurrence and realizable as the number of periodic points of a map is (a multiple of) the Lucas sequence.
We study the set of points returning infinitely often to a sequence of targets dependent on the starting points. With an assumption of decay of correlations for L1 against bounded variations, we prove a generalized quantitative recurrence result under Lipschitz twists.
We prove that for conformal expanding maps the return time does have constant multifractal spectrum. This is the counterpart of the result by Feng and Wu in the symbolic setting.
In the present paper, we define the concept of weak topological conjugacy and we establish sufficient conditions to obtain this kind of topological conjugacy between two limit sets. We use the character of recurrence to obtain the results.
We consider invertible discrete-time dynamical systems having a hyperbolic product structure in some region of the phase space with infinitely many branches and variable recurrence time. We show that the decay of correlations of the SRB measure associated to that hyperbolic structure is related to the tail of the recurrence times. We also give sufficient conditions for the validity of the Central Limit Theorem. This generalizes previous results by Benedicks and Young.
This paper examines a continuous time dynamical system that is an extension of a discrete time dynamical system previously examined, and considers this system together in a product space with a compact subset of Euclidean space. Together, the two systems give a skew product flow. We first examine limit behavior and recurrence in our continuous time extension. We then consider analogous limit and recurrence concepts for a skew product flow, and the behavior on the Euclidean space that results.
We are interested in the asymptotic behaviour of the first return time of the orbits of a dynamical system into a small neighbourhood of their starting points. We study this quantity in the context of dynamical systems preserving an infinite measure. More precisely, we consider the case of $\mathbb{Z}$-extensions of subshifts of finite type. We also consider a toy probabilistic model to enlight the strategy of our proofs.
In this paper we examine the interplay between recurrence properties and the shadowing property in dynamical systems on compact metric spaces. In particular, we demonstrate that if the dynamical system $(X,f)$ has shadowing, then it is recurrent if and only if it is minimal. Furthermore, we show that a uniformly rigid system $(X,f)$ has shadowing if and only if $X$ is totally disconnected and use this to demonstrate the existence of a space $X$ for which no surjective system $(X,f)$ has shadowing. We further refine these results to discuss the dynamics that can occur in spaces with compact spa…
We study non-recurrence sets for weakly mixing dynamical systems by using linear dynamical systems. These are systems consisting of a bounded linear operator acting on a separable complex Banach space X, which becomes a probability space when endowed with a non-degenerate Gaussian measure. We generalize some recent results of Bergelson, del Junco, Lemańczyk and Rosenblatt, and show in particular that sets \{n_k\} such that n_{k+1}/{n_k} tends to infinity, or such that n_{k} divides n_{k+1} for each k, are non-recurrence sets for weakly mixing linear dynamical systems. We also give examples, fo…
We study Poincaré recurrence from a purely geometrical viewpoint. We prove that the metric entropy is given by the exponential growth rate of return times to dynamical balls. This is the geometrical counterpart of Ornstein-Weiss theorem. Moreover, we show that minimal return times to dynamical balls grow linearly with respect to its length. Finally, some interesting relations between recurrence, dimension, entropy and Lyapunov exponents of ergodic measures are given.
We study different pointwise recurrence notions for linear dynamical systems from the Ergodic Theory point of view. We show that from any reiteratively recurrent vector $x_0$, for an adjoint operator $T$ on a separable dual Banach space $X$, one can construct a $T$-invariant probability measure which contains $x_0$ in its support. This allows us to establish some equivalences, for these operators, between some strong pointwise recurrence notions which in general are completely distinguished. In particular, we show that (in our framework) reiterative recurrence coincides with frequent recurrenc…
We discuss selected topics of current research interest in the theory of dynamical systems, with emphasis on dimension theory, multifractal analysis, and quantitative recurrence. The topics include the quantitative versus the qualitative behavior of Poincaré recurrence, the product structure of invariant measures and return times, the dimension of invariant sets and invariant measures, the complexity of the level sets of local quantities from the point of view of Hausdorff dimension, and the conditional variational principles as well as their applications to problems in number theory. We prese…
Using a structure theorem from [FG2010] we prove a version of multiple recurrence for sets of positive measure in a general stationary dynamical system.
A classical Borel Cantelli Lemma gives conditions for deciding whether an infinite number of rare events will almost surely happen. In this article, we propose an extension of Borel Cantelli Lemma to characterize the multiple occurrence of events on the same time scale. Our results imply multiple Logarithm Laws for recurrence and hitting times, as well as Poisson Limit Laws for systems which are exponentially mixing of all orders. The applications include geodesic flows on compact negatively curved manifolds, geodesic excursions, Diophantine approximations and extreme value theory for dynamica…
For non-uniformly hyperbolic dynamical systems we consider the time series of maxima along typical orbits. Using ideas based upon quantitative recurrence time statistics we prove convergence of the maxima (under suitable normalization) to an extreme value distribution, and obtain estimates on the rate of convergence. We show that our results are applicable to a range of examples, and include new results for Lorenz maps, certain partially hyperbolic systems, and non-uniformly expanding systems with sub-exponential decay of correlations. For applications where analytic results are not readily av…
We introduce the notion of a rational dynamical system extending the classical notion of a topological dynamical system and we prove (multiple) recurrence results for such systems via a partition theorem for the rational numbers proved by Farmaki and the author. In particular, we extend classical recurrence results developed by Furstenberg and Weiss. Also, we give some applications of these topological recurrence results to topology, to combinatorics, to diophantine approximations and to number theory.
A topological dynamical system induces two natural systems, one is on the hyperspace and the other one is on the probability space. The connection among some dynamical properties on the original space and on the induced spaces are investigated. Particularly, a minimal weakly mixing system which induces a $P$-system on the probability space is constructed and some disjointness result is obtained.
In this paper, we analyze several instrumental records of temperatures at different locations by using new techniques originally developed for the analysis of extreme values of dynamical systems. We show that they have the same recurrence time statistics as a chaotic dynamical system perturbed with dynamical noise and by instrument errors. The technique provides a criterion to discriminate whether the recurrence of a certain temperature belongs to the normal variability or can be considered as a genuine extreme event with respect to a specific timescale fixed as parameter. The method gives a s…
In this paper, we study the Poisson stability (in particular, stationarity, periodicity, quasi-periodicity, Bohr almost periodicity, almost automorphy, recurrence in the sense of Birkhoff, Levitan almost periodicity, pseudo periodicity, almost recurrence in the sense of Bebutov, pseudo recurrence, Poisson stability) of motions for monotone nonautonomous dynamical systems and of solutions for some classes of monotone nonautonomous evolution equations (ODEs, FDEs and parabolic PDEs). As a byproduct, some of our results indicate that all the trajectories of monotone systems converge to the above …
We explore recurrence properties arising from dynamical approach to combinatorial problems like the van der Waerden Theorem. We describe relations between these properties, study their consequences for dynamics, and demonstrate connections to combinatorial problems. In particular, we present a measure-theoretical analog of a result of Glasner on multi-transitivity in topological weakly mixing minimal maps. We also obtain a dynamical proof of the existence of a C-set with zero Banach density.
Two properties of a dynamical system, rigidity and non-recurrence, are examined in detail. The ultimate aim is to characterize the sequences along which these properties do or do not occur for different classes of transformations. The main focus in this article is to characterize explicitly the structural properties of sequences which can be rigidity sequences or non-recurrent sequences for some weakly mixing dynamical system. For ergodic transformations generally and for weakly mixing transformations in particular there are both parallels and distinctions between the class of rigid sequences …
From a physical/dynamical system perspective, the potential well represents the proportional mass of points that escape the neighbourhood of a given point. In the last 20 years, several works have shown the importance of this quantity to obtain precise approximations for several recurrence time distributions in mixing stochastic processes and dynamical systems. Besides providing a review of the different scaling factors used in the literature in recurrence times, the present work contributes with two new results: (1) for $ϕ$-mixing and $ψ$-mixing processes, we give a new exponential approximat…
We give a criterion to determine the large deviation rate functions for abstract dynamical systems on towers. As an application of this criterion we show the level 2 large deviation principle for some class of smooth interval maps with nonuniform hyperbolicity.
A high dimensional dynamical system is often studied by experimentalists through the measurement of a relatively low number of different quantities, called an observation. Following this idea and in the continuity of Boshernitzan's work, for a measure preserving system, we study Poincaré recurrence for the observation. The link between the return time for the observation and the Hausdorff dimension of the image of the invariant measure is considered. We prove that when the decay of correlations is super polynomial, the recurrence rates for the observations and the pointwise dimensions relative…
For any dynamical system $T:X\rightarrow X$ of a compact metric space $X$ with $g-$almost product property and uniform separation property, under the assumptions that the periodic points are dense in $X$ and the periodic measures are dense in the space of invariant measures, we distinguish various periodic-like recurrences and find that they all carry full topological topological entropy and so do their gap-sets. In particular, this implies that any two kind of periodic-like recurrences are essentially different. Moreover, we coordinate periodic-like recurrences with (ir)regularity and obtain …
We study the recurrence to mistake dynamical balls, that is, dynamical balls that admit some errors and whose proportion of errors decrease tends to zero with the length of the dynamical ball. We prove, under mild assumptions, that the measure-theoretic entropy coincides with the exponential growth rate of return times to mistake dynamical balls and that minimal return times to mistake dynamical balls grow linearly with respect to its length. Moreover we obtain averaged recurrence formula for subshifts of finite type and suspension semiflows. Applications include $β$-transformations, Axiom A fl…
We study recurrence and non-recurrence sets for dynamical systems on compact spaces, in particular for products of rotations on the unit circle T. A set of integers is called r-Bohr if it is recurrent for all products of r rotations on T, and Bohr if it is recurrent for all products of rotations on T. It is a result due to Katznelson that for each r there exist sets of integers which are r-Bohr but not (r+1)-Bohr. We present new examples of r-Bohr sets which are not Bohr, thanks to a construction which is both flexible and completely explicit. Our results are related to an old combinatorial pr…
Under some mild condition, a random walk in the plane is recurrent. In particular each trajectory is dense, and a natural question is how much time one needs to approach a given small neighborhood of the origin. We address this question in the case of some extended dynamical systems similar to planar random walks, including $\ZZ^2$-extension of hyperbolic dynamics. We define a pointwise recurrence rate and relate it to the dimension of the process, and establish a convergence in distribution of the rescaled return times near the origin.
A {\it dynamical system\/} is a pair $(X,\langle T_s\rangle_{s\in S})$, where $X$ is a compact Hausdorff space, $S$ is a semigroup, for each $s\in S$, $T_s$ is a continuous function from $X$ to $X$, and for all $s,t\in S$, $T_s\circ T_t=T_{st}$. Given a point $p\inβS$, the Stone-\v Cech compactification of the discrete space $S$, $T_p:X\to X$ is defined by, for $x\in X$, $\displaystyle T_p(x)=p{-}\!\lim_{s\in S}T_s(x)$. We let $βS$ have the operation extending the operation of $S$ such that $βS$ is a right topological semigroup and multiplication on the left by any point of $S$ is continuous. …
In dynamical systems, shrinking target sets and pointwise recurrent sets are two important classes of dynamically defined subsets. In this article we introduce a mild condition on the linear parts of the affine mappings that allow us to bound the Hausdorff dimension of cylindrical shrinking target and recurrence sets. For generic self-affine sets in the sense of Falconer, that is by randomising the translation part of the affine maps, we prove that these bounds are sharp. These mild assumptions mean that our results significantly extend and complement the existing literature for recurrence on …
We consider toral extensions of hyperbolic dynamical systems. We prove that its quantitative recurrence (also with respect to given observables) and hitting time scale behavior depend on the arithmetical properties of the extension. By this we show that those systems have a polynomial decay of correlations with respect to $C^{r}$ observables, and give estimations for its exponent, which depend on $r$ and on the arithmetical properties of the system. We also show examples of systems of this kind having not the shrinking target property, and having a trivial limit distribution of return time sta…
Establishing the existence of periodic orbits is one of the crucial and most intricate topics in the study of dynamical systems, and over the years, many methods have been developed to this end. On the other hand, finding closed orbits in discrete contexts, such as graph theory or in the recently developed field of combinatorial dynamics, is straightforward and computationally feasible. In this paper, we present an approach to study classical dynamical systems as given by semiflows or flows using techniques from combinatorial topological dynamics. More precisely, we present a general existence…
We consider a multidimensional time-homogeneous dynamical system and add a randomly perturbed time-dependent deterministic signal to some of its components, giving rise to a high-dimensional system of stochastic differential equations, which is driven by possibly very low-dimensional noise. Equations of this type commonly occur in biology when modelling neurons or in statistical mechanics for certain Hamiltonian systems. We provide verifiable conditions on the original deterministic dynamical system under which the solution to the respective stochastic system features a point in the interior o…
There are lots of results to study dynamical complexity on irregular sets and level sets of ergodic average from the perspective of density in base space, Hausdorff dimension, Lebesgue positive measure, positive or full topological entropy (and topological pressure) etc.. However, it is unknown from the viewpoint of chaos. There are lots of results on the relationship of positive topological entropy and various chaos but it is known that positive topological entropy does not imply a strong version of chaos called DC1 so that it is non-trivial to study DC1 on irregular sets and level sets. In t…
We study spatial discretizations of dynamical systems: is it possible to recover some dynamical features of a system from numerical simulations? Here, we tackle this issue for the simplest algorithm possible: we compute long segments of orbits with a fixed number of digits. We show that for every $r\ge 1$, the dynamics of the discretizations of a $C^r$ generic conservative diffeomorphism of the torus is very different from that observed in the $C^0$ regularity. The proof of our results involves in particular a local-global formula for discretizations, as well as a study of the corresponding li…
The Furstenberg recurrence theorem (or equivalently, Szemerédi's theorem) can be formulated in the language of von Neumann algebras as follows: given an integer $k \geq 2$, an abelian finite von Neumann algebra $(\M,τ)$ with an automorphism $α: \M \to \M$, and a non-negative $a \in \M$ with $τ(a)>0$, one has $\liminf_{N \to \infty} \frac{1}{N} \sum_{n=1}^N \Re τ(a α^n (a) ... α^{(k-1)n} (a)) > 0$; a subsequent result of Host and Kra shows that this limit exists. In particular, $\Re τ(a α^n (a) >... α^{(k-1)n} (a)) > 0$ for all $n$ in a set of positive density. From the von Neumann algebra pers…
Starting with a combinatorial partition theorem for words over an infinite alphabet dominated by a fixed sequence, established recently by the authors, we prove recurrence results for topological dynamical systems indexed by such words. In this way we extend the classical theory developed by Furstenberg and Weiss of dynamical systems indexed by the natural numbers to systems indexed by words. Moreover, applying this theory to topological systems indexed by semigroups that can be represented as words we get analogous recurrence results for such systems.
