We give a criterion to determine the large deviation rate functions for abstract dynamical systems on towers. As an application of this criterion we show the level 2 large deviation principle for some class of smooth interval maps with nonuniform hyperbolicity.
We prove a maximal-type large deviation principle for dynamical systems with arbitrarily slow polynomial mixing rates. Also several applications, particularly to billiard systems, are presented.
We prove quantitative recurrence and large deviations results for the Teichmuller geodesci flow on a connected component of a stratum of the moduli space $Q_g$ of holomorphic unit-area quadratic differentials on a compact genus $g \geq 2$ surface.
A classic approach in dynamical systems is to use particular geometric structures to deduce statistical properties, for example the existence of invariant measures with stochastic-like behaviour such as large deviations or decay of correlations. Such geometric structures are generally highly non-trivial and thus a natural question is the extent to which this approach can be applied. In this paper we show that in many cases stochastic-like behaviour itself implies that the system has certain non-trivial geometric properties, which are therefore necessary as well as sufficient conditions for the…
Motivated by entropy estimation from chaotic time series, we provide a comprehensive analysis of hitting times of cylinder sets in the setting of Gibbsian sources. We prove two strong approximation results from which we easily deduce pointwise convergence to entropy, lognormal fluctuations, precise large deviation estimates and an explicit formula for the hitting-time multifractal spectrum. It follows from our analysis that the hitting time of a $n$-cylinder fluctuates in the same way as the inverse measure of this $n$-cylinder at "small scales", but in a different way at "large scales". In pa…
From a physical/dynamical system perspective, the potential well represents the proportional mass of points that escape the neighbourhood of a given point. In the last 20 years, several works have shown the importance of this quantity to obtain precise approximations for several recurrence time distributions in mixing stochastic processes and dynamical systems. Besides providing a review of the different scaling factors used in the literature in recurrence times, the present work contributes with two new results: (1) for $ϕ$-mixing and $ψ$-mixing processes, we give a new exponential approximat…
We obtain a exponential large deviation upper bound for continuous observables on suspension semiflows over a non-uniformly expanding base transformation with non-flat singularities or criticalities, where the roof function defining the suspension behaves like the logarithm of the distance to the singular/critical set of the base map. That is, given a continuous function we consider its space average with respect to a physical measure and compare this with the time averages along orbits of the semiflow, showing that the Lebesgue measure of the set of points whose time averages stay away from t…
Quantitative recurrence indicators are defined by measuring the first entrance time of the orbit of a point $x$ in a decreasing sequence of neighborhoods of another point $y$. It is proved that these recurrence indicators are a.e. greater or equal to the local dimension at $y$, then these recurrence indicators can be used to have a numerical upper bound on the local dimension of an invariant measure.
We investigate the properties of chain recurrent, chain transitive, and chain mixing maps (generalizations of the well-known notions of non-wandering, topologically transitive, and topologically mixing maps). We describe the structure of chain transitive maps. These notions of recurrence are defined using $\ep$-chains, and the minimal lengths of these $\ep$-chains give a way to measure recurrence time (chain recurrence and chain mixing times). We give upper and lower bounds for these recurrence times and relate the chain mixing time to topological entropy.
For continuous maps of compact metric spaces $f:X\to X$ and $g:Y\to Y$ and for various notions of topological recurrence, we study the relationship between recurrence for $f$ and $g$ and recurrence for the product map $f\times g:X\times Y \to X\times Y$. For the generalized recurrent set $GR$, we see that $GR(f\times g)=GR(f)\times GR(g)$. For the nonwandering set $NW$, we see that $NW(f\times g)\subset NW(f)\times NW(g)$ and give necessary and sufficient conditions on $f$ for equality for every $g$. We also consider product recurrence for the chain recurrent set, the strong chain recurrent se…
We consider invertible discrete-time dynamical systems having a hyperbolic product structure in some region of the phase space with infinitely many branches and variable recurrence time. We show that the decay of correlations of the SRB measure associated to that hyperbolic structure is related to the tail of the recurrence times. We also give sufficient conditions for the validity of the Central Limit Theorem. This generalizes previous results by Benedicks and Young.
We investigate quantitative recurrence in systems having an infinite measure. We extend the Ornstein-Weiss theorem for a general class of infinite systems estimating return time in decreasing sequences of cylinders. Then we restrict to a class of one dimensional maps with indifferent fixed points and calculate quantitative recurrence in sequences of balls, obtaining that this is related to the behavior of the map near the fixed points.
Using a result of Behrend concerning sets without arithmetic progressions, we construct some examples of dynamical systems with slow time of multiple recurrence. Our theorem is a quatitative analog of Furstenberg's Correspondence Principle.
We study Poincaré recurrence from a purely geometrical viewpoint. We prove that the metric entropy is given by the exponential growth rate of return times to dynamical balls. This is the geometrical counterpart of Ornstein-Weiss theorem. Moreover, we show that minimal return times to dynamical balls grow linearly with respect to its length. Finally, some interesting relations between recurrence, dimension, entropy and Lyapunov exponents of ergodic measures are given.
This paper examines a continuous time dynamical system that is an extension of a discrete time dynamical system previously examined, and considers this system together in a product space with a compact subset of Euclidean space. Together, the two systems give a skew product flow. We first examine limit behavior and recurrence in our continuous time extension. We then consider analogous limit and recurrence concepts for a skew product flow, and the behavior on the Euclidean space that results.
We give a short proof of polynomial recurrence with large intersection for additive actions of finite-dimensional vector spaces over countable fields on probability spaces, improving upon the known size and structure of the set of strong recurrence times.
The paper is devoted to study of product recurrence. First, we prove that notions of $\F_{ps}-PR$ and $\F_{pubd}-PR$ are exactly the same as product recurrence, completing that way results of [P. Dong, S. Shao and X. Ye, \emph{Product recurrent properties, disjointness and weak disjointness}, Israel J. Math.], and consequently, extending the characterization of return times of distal points which originated from works of Furstenberg. We also study the structure of the set of return times of weakly mixing sets. As a consequence, we obtain new sufficient conditions for $\F_{s}-PR$ and also find …
We show that a doubly minimal system $X$ has the property that for every minimal system $Y$ the orbit closure of any pair $(y,x) \in Y \times X$ is either $Y \times X$ or it has the form $Γ_π= \{(π(x),x) : x \in X\}$ for some factor map $π: X \to Y$. As a corollary we resolve a problem of Haddad and Ott from 2008 regarding product recurrence.
We prove that for conformal expanding maps the return time does have constant multifractal spectrum. This is the counterpart of the result by Feng and Wu in the symbolic setting.
For measure preserving dynamical systems on metric spaces we study the time needed by a typical orbit to return back close to its starting point. We prove that when the decay of correlation is super-polynomial the recurrence rates and the pointwise dimensions are equal. This gives a broad class of systems for which the recurrence rate equals the Hausdorff dimension of the invariant measure.
This paper is a first step in the study of the recurrence behavior in random dynamical systems and randomly perturbed dynamical systems. In particular we define a concept of quenched and annealed return times for systems generated by the composition of random maps. We moreover prove that for super-polynomially mixing systems, the random recurrence rate is equal to the local dimension of the stationary measure.
Misiurewicz[19]introducedtheconceptofpseudo-entropyandproved this quantity coincides with topological entropy. Richeson et al. [21] obtained the lower bounded of topological entropy by means of the definition of pseudo-entropy. This paper aims to generalize the main results obtained by Misiurewicz and Rich-eson et al. to free semigroup actions. Firstly, the pseudo-entropy is introduced for free semigroup actions, and it is shown that the pseudo-entropy coincides with the topological entropy defined by Bufetov [9]. Secondly, these concepts of the chain recurrence, the chain mixing, the chain re…
Under some mild condition, a random walk in the plane is recurrent. In particular each trajectory is dense, and a natural question is how much time one needs to approach a given small neighborhood of the origin. We address this question in the case of some extended dynamical systems similar to planar random walks, including $\ZZ^2$-extension of hyperbolic dynamics. We define a pointwise recurrence rate and relate it to the dimension of the process, and establish a convergence in distribution of the rescaled return times near the origin.
The present paper is devoted to the study of stability, uniqueness and recurrence of generalized traveling waves of reaction-diffusion equations in time heterogeneous media of ignition type, whose existence has been proven by the authors of the present paper in a previous work. It is first shown that generalized traveling waves exponentially attract wave-like initial data. Next, properties of generalized traveling waves, such as space monotonicity and exponential decay ahead of interface, are obtained. Uniqueness up to space translations of generalized traveling waves is then proven. Finally, …
We show that the Poincaré return time of a typical cylinder is at least its length. For one dimensional maps we express the Lyapunov exponent and dimension via return times.
We study the sequences generated by neuronal recurrence equations of the form $x(n) = {\bf 1}[\sum_{j=1}^{h} a_{j} x(n-j)- θ]$. From a neuronal recurrence equation of memory size $h$ which describes a cycle of length $ρ(m) \times lcm(p_0, p_1,..., p_{-1+ρ(m)})$, we construct a set of $ρ(m)$ neuronal recurrence equations whose dynamics describe respectively the transient of length $O(ρ(m) \times lcm(p_0, ..., p_{d}))$ and the cycle of length $O(ρ(m) \times lcm(p_{d+1}, ..., p_{-1+ρ(m)}))$ if $0 \leq d \leq -2+ρ(m)$ and 1 if $d=ρ(m)-1$. This result shows the exponential time of the convergence o…
We obtain a description of the Poincaré recurrences of chaotic systems in terms of the ergodic theory of transient chaos. It is based on the equivalence between the recurrence time distribution and an escape time distribution obtained by leaking the system and taking a special initial ensemble. This ensemble is atypical in terms of the natural measure of the leaked system, the conditionally invariant measure. Accordingly, for general initial ensembles, the average recurrence and escape times are different. However, we show that the decay rate of these distributions is always the same. Our resu…
In this paper, we analyze several instrumental records of temperatures at different locations by using new techniques originally developed for the analysis of extreme values of dynamical systems. We show that they have the same recurrence time statistics as a chaotic dynamical system perturbed with dynamical noise and by instrument errors. The technique provides a criterion to discriminate whether the recurrence of a certain temperature belongs to the normal variability or can be considered as a genuine extreme event with respect to a specific timescale fixed as parameter. The method gives a s…
A classical Borel Cantelli Lemma gives conditions for deciding whether an infinite number of rare events will almost surely happen. In this article, we propose an extension of Borel Cantelli Lemma to characterize the multiple occurrence of events on the same time scale. Our results imply multiple Logarithm Laws for recurrence and hitting times, as well as Poisson Limit Laws for systems which are exponentially mixing of all orders. The applications include geodesic flows on compact negatively curved manifolds, geodesic excursions, Diophantine approximations and extreme value theory for dynamica…
