A high dimensional dynamical system is often studied by experimentalists through the measurement of a relatively low number of different quantities, called an observation. Following this idea and in the continuity of Boshernitzan's work, for a measure preserving system, we study Poincaré recurrence for the observation. The link between the return time for the observation and the Hausdorff dimension of the image of the invariant measure is considered. We prove that when the decay of correlations is super polynomial, the recurrence rates for the observations and the pointwise dimensions relatively to the push-forward are equal.
We study Poincaré recurrence from a purely geometrical viewpoint. We prove that the metric entropy is given by the exponential growth rate of return times to dynamical balls. This is the geometrical counterpart of Ornstein-Weiss theorem. Moreover, we show that minimal return times to dynamical balls grow linearly with respect to its length. Finally, some interesting relations between recurrence, dimension, entropy and Lyapunov exponents of ergodic measures are given.
Poincaré recurrence theorem implies the density of recurrent points for volume-preserving dynamical systems on compact domains. The density of closed orbits in the non-wandering set is one of the essential properties of Axiom A and chaos. The minimal flows are one of the most fundamental objects in topological dynamics. To analyze minimality, recurrence, and density in this paper, we introduce a strict limit circuit and a circuit with wandering holonomy. Using these concepts, we classify non-recurrent non-wandering orbits of flows on compact surfaces with finitely many singular points, charact…
In this note we discuss three interconnected problems about dynamics of Hamiltonian or, more generally, just smooth diffeomorphisms. The first two concern the existence and properties of the maps whose iterations approximate the identity map with respect to some norm, e.g., $C^1$- or $C^0$-norm for general diffeomorphisms and the $γ$-norm in the Hamiltonian case, and the third problem is the Lagrangian Poincaré recurrence conjecture.
We show that, under suitable assumptions, Poincare recurrences of a dynamical system determine its topology in phase space. Therefore, dynamical systems with the same recurrences are topologically equivalent.
Nadirashvili presented a beautiful example showing that the Poincaré recurrence does not occur near a particular solution to the 2D Euler equation of inviscid incompressible fluids. Unfortunately, Nadirashvili's setup of the phase space is not appropriate, and details of the proof are missing. This note fixes that.
Riesz space (non-pointwise) generalizations for iterative processes are given for the concepts of recurrence, first recurrence and conditional ergodicity. Riesz space conditional versions of the Poincaré Recurrence Theorem and the Kac formula are developed. Under mild assumptions, it is shown that every conditional expectation preserving process is conditionally ergodic with respect to the conditional expectation generated by the Cesàro mean associated with the iterates of the process. Applied to processes in $L^1(Ω,{\mathcal A},μ)$, where $μ$ is a probability measure, new conditional versions…
From a physical/dynamical system perspective, the potential well represents the proportional mass of points that escape the neighbourhood of a given point. In the last 20 years, several works have shown the importance of this quantity to obtain precise approximations for several recurrence time distributions in mixing stochastic processes and dynamical systems. Besides providing a review of the different scaling factors used in the literature in recurrence times, the present work contributes with two new results: (1) for $ϕ$-mixing and $ψ$-mixing processes, we give a new exponential approximat…
In this paper, we study "demi-caractéristique" and (Poisson) stability in the sense of Poincaré. Using the definitions á la Poincaré for $\R$-actions $v$ on compact connected surfaces, we show that "$R$-closed" $\Rightarrow$ "pointwise almost periodicity (p.a.p.)" $\Rightarrow$ "recurrence" $\Rightarrow$ non-wandering. Moreover, we show that the action $v$ is "recurrence" with $|\mathrm{Sing}(v)| < \infty$ iff $v$ is regular non-wandering. If there are no locally dense orbits, then $v$ is "p.a.p." iff $v$ is "recurrence" without "orbits" containing infinitely singularities. If $|\mathrm{Sing}(…
In this paper we prove that the Poincaré map associated to a Lorenz like flow has exponential decay of correlations with respect to Lipschitz observables. This implies that the hitting time associated to the flow satisfies a logarithm law. The hitting time $τ_r(x,x_0)$ is the time needed for the orbit of a point $x$ to enter for the first time in a ball $B_r(x_0)$ centered at $x_0$, with small radius $r$. As the radius of the ball decreases to 0 its asymptotic behavior is a power law whose exponent is related to the local dimension of the SRB measure at $x_0$: for each $x_0$ such that the loca…
The statistics of Poincaré recurrence times in Hamiltonian systems typically shows a power-law decay with chaotic trajectories sticking to some phase-space regions for long times. For higher-dimensional systems the mechanism of this power-law trapping is still unknown. We investigate trapped orbits of a generic 4D symplectic map in phase space and frequency space and find that, in contrast to 2D maps, the trapping is (i) not due to a hierarchy in phase space. Instead, it occurs at the surface of the regular region, (ii) outside of the Arnold web. The chaotic dynamics in this sticky region is (…
Replicator dynamics, the continuous-time analogue of Multiplicative Weights Updates, is the main dynamic in evolutionary game theory. In simple evolutionary zero-sum games, such as Rock-Paper-Scissors, replicator dynamic is periodic \cite{zeeman1980population}, however, its behavior in higher dimensions is not well understood. We provide a complete characterization of its behavior in zero-sum evolutionary games. We prove that, if and only if, the system has an interior Nash equilibrium, the dynamics exhibit Poincaré recurrence, i.e., almost all orbits come arbitrary close to their initial cond…
We study Poincaré recurrence for flows and observations of flows. For Anosov flow, we prove that the recurrence rates are linked to the local dimension of the invariant measure. More generally, we give for the recurrence rates for the observation an upper bound depending on the push-forward measure. When the flow is metrically isomorphic to a suspension flow for which the dynamic on the base is rapidly mixing, we prove the existence of a lower bound for the recurrence rates for the observation. We apply these results to the geodesic flow and we compute the recurrence rates for a particular obs…
The problem which can be viewed as the higher order version of an old question concerning Bohr sets is investigated: for any $d\in \N$ does the collection of $\{n\in \Z: S\cap (S-n)\cap...\cap (S-dn)\neq \emptyset\}$ with $S$ syndetic coincide with that of Nil$_d$ Bohr$_0$-sets? In this paper it is proved that Nil$_d$ Bohr$_0$-sets could be characterized via generalized polynomials, and applying this result one side of the problem could be answered affirmatively: for any Nil$_d$ Bohr$_0$-set $A$, there exists a syndetic set $S$ such that $A\supset \{n\in \Z: S\cap (S-n)\cap...\cap (S-dn)\neq \…
We show that the Poincaré return time of a typical cylinder is at least its length. For one dimensional maps we express the Lyapunov exponent and dimension via return times.
We discuss selected topics of current research interest in the theory of dynamical systems, with emphasis on dimension theory, multifractal analysis, and quantitative recurrence. The topics include the quantitative versus the qualitative behavior of Poincaré recurrence, the product structure of invariant measures and return times, the dimension of invariant sets and invariant measures, the complexity of the level sets of local quantities from the point of view of Hausdorff dimension, and the conditional variational principles as well as their applications to problems in number theory. We prese…
We present a novel control-theoretic understanding of online optimization and learning in games, via the notion of passivity. Passivity is a fundamental concept in control theory, which abstracts energy conservation and dissipation in physical systems. It has become a standard tool in analysis of general feedback systems, to which game dynamics belong. Our starting point is to show that all continuous-time Follow-the-Regularized-Leader (FTRL) dynamics, which include the well-known Replicator Dynamic, are lossless, i.e. it is passive with no energy dissipation. Interestingly, we prove that pass…
This paper studies recurrence phenomena in iterative holomorphic dynamics of certain multi-valued maps. In particular, we prove an analogue of the Poincaré recurrence theorem for meromorphic correspondences with respect to certain dynamically interesting measures associated with them. Meromorphic correspondences present a significant measure-theoretic obstacle: the image of a Borel set under a meromorphic correspondence need not be Borel. We manage this issue using the Measurable Projection Theorem, which is an aspect of descriptive set theory. We also prove a result concerning invariance prop…
In the context of geodesic flows of noncompact negatively curved manifolds, we propose three different definitions of entropy and pressure at infinity, through growth of periodic orbits, critical exponents of Poincaré series, and entropy (pressure) of invariant measures. We show that these notions coincide. Thanks to these entropy and pressure at infinity, we investigate thoroughly the notion of strong positive recurrence in this geometric context. A potential is said strongly positively recurrent when its pressure at infinity is strictly smaller than the full topological pressure. We show in …
We study qualitative properties of the set of recurrent points of finitely generated free semigroups of measurable maps. In the case of a single generator the classical Poincare recurrence theorem shows that these properties are closely related to the presence of an invariant measure. Curious, but otherwise it turns out to be possible that almost all points are recurrent, while there is an wandering set of positive (non-invariant) measure. For a general semigroup the assumption about the common invariant measure for all generators looks somewhat unnatural (despite being widely used). Instead w…
We study analytically and numerically the extreme value distribution of observables defined along the temporal evolution of a dynamical system. The convergence to the Gumbel law of observable recurrences gives information on the fractal structure of the image of the invariant measure by the observable. We provide illustrations on idealized and physical systems.
Recent work has focused on data-driven learning of the evolution of unknown systems via deep neural networks (DNNs), with the goal of conducting long term prediction of the dynamics of the unknown system. In many real-world applications, data from time-dependent systems are often collected on a time scale that is coarser than desired, due to various restrictions during the data acquisition process. Consequently, the observed dynamics can be severely under-sampled and do not reflect the true dynamics of the underlying system. This paper presents a computational technique to learn the fine-scale…
This article discusses the search procedure for the Poincaré recurrences to classify solutions on an attractor of a fourth-order nonlinear dynamical system using a previously developed high-precision numerical method. For the resulting limiting solution, the Lyapunov exponents are calculated using the modified Benettin's algorithm to study the stability of the found regime and confirm the type of attractor.
