Following the approach to pseudo-Riemannian symmetric spaces developed in math.DG/0408249 we exhibit examples of indefinite hyper-Kaehler symmetric spaces with non-abelian holonomy. Moreover, we classify indecomposable hyper-Kaehler symmetric spaces whose metric has signature (4,4n). Such spaces exist if and only if n=0,1,3.
Indefinite Kaehler solutions of the Einstein equations are studied, and it is almost completely determined which compact complex surfaces admit such metrics.
In the present paper, we introduce screen almost semi-invariant (SASI) lightlike submanifolds of indefinite Keahler manifolds. We obtain the neccesary and sufficient condition for the induced connection to be a metric connection on SASI-lightlike submanifolds and construct an example for this manifold. Also we find some conditions for integrability of distributions and investigate certain characterizations.
We classify indefinite simply connected hyper-Kaehler symmetric spaces. Any such space without flat factor has commutative holonomy group and signature (4m,4m). We establish a natural 1-1 correspondence between simply connected hyper-Kaehler symmetric spaces of dimension 8m and orbits of the general linear group GL(m,H) over the quaternions on the space (S^4C^n)^τ of homogeneous quartic polynomials S in n = 2m complex variables satisfying the reality condition S = τS, where τis the real structure induced by the quaternionic structure of C^{2m} = H^m. We define and classify also complex hyper-K…
We introduce a new class of lightlike submanifolds, namely, Screen Transversal Cauchy Riemann (STCR)-lightlike submanifolds, of indefinite Kaehler manifolds. We show that this new class is an umbrella of screen transversal lightlike, screen transversal totally real lightlike and CR-lightlike submanifolds. We give a few examples of a STCR lightlike submanifold, investigate the integrability of various distributions, obtain a characterization of such lightlike submanifolds in a complex space form and find new conditions for the induced connection to be a metric connection. Moreover, we investiga…
The total space of the tangent bundle of a Kähler manifold admits a canonical Kähler structure. Parallel translation identifies the space ${\Bbb{T}}$ of oriented affine lines in ${\Bbb{R}}^3$ with the tangent bundle of $S^2$. Thus, the round metric on $S^2$ induces a Kähler structure on ${\Bbb{T}}$ which turns out to have a metric of neutral signature. It is shown that the isometry group of this metric is isomorphic to the isometry group of the Euclidean metric on ${\Bbb{R}}^3$. The geodesics of this metric are either planes or helicoids in ${\Bbb{R}}^3$. The signature of the metric induced on…
We call a quaternionic Kaehler manifold with non-zero scalar curvature, whose quaternionic structure is trivialized by a hypercomplex structure, a hyper-Hermitian quaternionic Kaehler manifold. We prove that every locally symmetric hyper-Hermitian quaternionic Kaehler manifold is locally isometric to the quaternionic projective space or to the quaternionic hyperbolic space. We describe locally the hyper-Hermitian quaternionic Kaehler manifolds with closed Lee form and show that the only complete simply connected such manifold is the quaternionic hyperbolic space.
We prove that every Kaehler metric, whose potential is a function of the time-like distance in the flat Kaehler-Lorentz space, is of quasi-constant holomorphic sectional curvatures, satisfying certain conditions. This gives a local classification of the Kaehler manifolds with the above mentioned metrics. New examples of Sasakian space forms are obtained as real hypersurfaces of a Kaehler space form with special invariant distribution. We introduce three types of even dimensional rotational hypersurfaces in flat spaces and endow them with locally conformal Kaehler structures. We prove that thes…
Almost hypercomplex manifolds with Hermitian and Norden metrics and more specially the corresponding quaternionic Kaehler manifolds are considered. Some necessary and sufficient conditions the investigated manifolds be isotropic hyper-Kaehlerian and flat are found. It is proved that the quaternionic Kaehler manifolds with the considered metric structure are Einstein for dimension at least 8. The class of the non-hyper-Kaehler quaternionic Kaehler manifold of the considered type is determined.
We present several local and global results on isometric immersions of Kaehler manifolds $M^{2n}$ into hyperbolic space $\Hy^{2n+p}$. For instance, a classification is given in the case of dimension $n\geq 4$ and codimension $p=2$. Moreover, as corollaries of general results, we conclude that there are no isometric immersion in codimension $p\leq n-2$ if the Kaehler manifold is of dimension $n\geq 4$ and either has a point of positive holomorphic sectional curvature or is compact.
An explicit classification of homogeneous quaternionic Kaehler structures by real tensors is derived and we relate this to the representation-theoretic description found by Fino. We then show how the quaternionic hyperbolic space HH(n) is characterised by admitting homogeneous structures of a particularly simple type. In the process we study the properties of different homogeneous models for HH(n).
We review the general properties of target spaces of hypermultiplets, which are quaternionic-like manifolds, and discuss the relations between these manifolds and their symmetry generators. We explicitly construct a one-to-one map between conformal hypercomplex manifolds (i.e. those that have a closed homothetic Killing vector) and quaternionic manifolds of one quaternionic dimension less. An important role is played by 'ξ-transformations', relating complex structures on conformal hypercomplex manifolds and connections on quaternionic manifolds. In this map, the subclass of conformal hyper-Kae…
A hyperkaehler manifold with a circle action fixing just one complex structure admits a natural a hyperholomorphic line bundle. This forms the basis for the construction of a corresponding quaternionic Kaehler manifold in the work of A.Haydys. We construct in this paper the corresponding holomorphic line bundle on twistor space and compute many examples, including monopole and Higgs bundle moduli spaces. We also show that the bundle on twistor space has a natural meromorphic connection which realizes it as the quantum line bundle for the hyperkaehler family of holomorphic symplectic structures…
A theorem of Kuranishi tells us that the moduli space of complex structures on any smooth compact manifold is always locally a finite-dimensional space. Globally, however, this is simply not true; we display examples in which the moduli space contains a sequence of regions for which the local dimension tends to infinity. These examples naturally arise from the twistor theory of hyper-Kaehler manifolds.
We introduce two classes of null hypersurfaces of an indefinite Sasakian manifold, $(\overline{M}, \overlineϕ,ζ, η)$, tangent to the characteristic vector field $ζ$, called; {\it contact screen conformal} and {\it contact screen umbilic} null hypersurfaces. These hypersurfaces come in to fill the existing gap in screen conformal and screen totally umbilic null hypersurfaces. We prove that such hypersurfaces are contained in indefinite Sasakian space forms of constant $\overlineϕ$-sectional curvature of $-3$.
We present a simple explicit construction of hyper-Kaehler and hyper-symplectic (also known as neutral hyper-Kaehler or hyper-parakaehler) metrics in 4D using the Bianchi type groups of class A. The construction underlies a correspondence between hyper-Kaehler and hyper-symplectic structures in dimension four.
The cohomology of a compact Kaehler (resp. hyperKaehler) manifold admits the action of the Lie algebra so(2,1) (resp. so(4,1)). In this paper we show, following an idea of Witten, how this action follows from supersymmetry, in particular from the symmetries of certain supersymmetric sigma models. In addition, many of the fundamental identities in Hodge-Lefschetz theory are also naturally derived from supersymmetry.
A Hopf hypersurface in a (para-)Kaehler manifold is a real hypersurface for which one of the principal directions of the second fundamental form is the (para-)complex dual of the normal vector. We consider particular Hopf hypersurfaces in the space of oriented geodesics of a non-flat space form of dimension greater than 2. For spherical and hyperbolic space forms, the oriented geodesic space admits a canonical Kaehler-Einstein and para-Kaehler-Einstein structure, respectively, so that a natural notion of a Hopf hypersurface exists. The particular hypersurfaces considered are formed by the orie…
In this paper we study the homogeneous Kaehler manifolds (h.K.m.) which can be Kaehler immersed into finite or infinite dimensional complex space forms. On one hand we completely classify the h.K.m. which can be Kaehler immersed into a finite or infinite dimensional complex Euclidean or hyperbolic space. Moreover, we extend known results about Kaehler immersions into the finite dimensional complex projective space to the infinite dimensional setting.
A linear constraint is given on the Betti numbers of a compact hyper-Kaehler manifold, using an index formula for c_1c_{n-1} on an almost complex manifold. The topology of some other manifolds with reduced holonomy is also discussed briefly.
We introduce a generalization of Taub-NUT deformations for large families of hyper-Kaehler quotients including toric hyper-Kaehler manifolds and quiver varieties, and apply them to the case of the Hilbert schemes of k points on C^2.
The main two families of real hypersurfaces in complex space forms are Hopf and ruled. However, very little is known about real hypersurfaces in the indefinite complex projective space $\cpn$. In a previous work, Kimura and the second author introduced Hopf real hypersurfaces in $\cpn$. In this paper, ruled real hypersurfaces in the indefinite complex projective space are introduced, as those whose maximal holomorphic distribution is integrable, and such that the leaves are totally geodesic holomorphic hyperplanes. A detailed description of the shape operator is computed, obtaining two main di…
We wish to attack the problems that H.~Anciaux and K.~Panagiotidou posed in [1], for non-degenerate real hypersurfaces in indefinite complex projective space. We will slightly change these authors' point of view, obtaining cleaner equations for the almost contact metric structure. To make the theory meaningful, we construct new families of non-degenerate Hopf real hypersurfaces whose shape operator is diagonalisable, and one Hopf example with degenerate metric and non-diagonalisable shape operator. Next, we obtain a rigidity result. We classify those real hypersurfaces which are $η$-umbilical.…
For an almost contact metric manifold $N$, we find conditions for which either the total space of an $S^1$-bundle over $N$ or the Riemannian cone over $N$ admits a strong Kähler with torsion (SKT) structure. In this way we construct new 6-dimensional SKT manifolds. Moreover, we study the geometric structure induced on a hypersurface of an SKT manifold, and use such structures to construct new SKT manifolds via appropriate evolution equations. Hyper-Kähler with torsion (HKT) structures on the total space of an $S^1$-bundle over manifolds with three almost contact structures are also studied.
It has been known for some time that there exist $5$ essentially different real forms of the complex affine Kac-Moody algebra of type $A_2^{(2)}$ and that one can associate $4$ of these real forms with certain classes of "integrable surfaces", such as minimal Lagrangian surfaces in $\mathbb {CP}^2$ and $\mathbb {CH}^2$, as well as definite and indefinite affine spheres in $\mathbb R^3$. In this paper we consider the class of timelike minimal Lagrangian surfaces in the indefinite complex hyperbolic two-space $\mathbb{CH}^2_1$. We show that this class of surfaces corresponds to the fifth real fo…
In this article, we construct a new para-Kähler structure $({\mathcal G},{\mathcal J},Ω)$ in the space of oriented geodesics ${\mathbb L}(M)$ in a non-flat, real space form $M$. We first show that the para-Kähler metric ${\mathcal G}$ is scalar flat and when $M$ is a 3-dimensional real space form, ${\mathcal G}$ is locally conformally flat. Furthermore, we prove that the space of oriented geodesics in hyperbolic $n$-space, equipped with the constructed metric ${\mathcal G}$, is minimally isometric embedded in the tangent bundle of the hyperbolic $n$-space. We then study the submanifold theory,…
We present a definition of indefinite Kasparov modules, a generalisation of unbounded Kasparov modules modelling non-symmetric and non-elliptic (e.g. hyperbolic) operators. Our main theorem shows that to each indefinite Kasparov module we can associate a pair of (genuine) Kasparov modules, and that this process is reversible. We present three examples of our framework: the Dirac operator on a pseudo-Riemannian spin manifold (i.e. a manifold with an indefinite metric), the harmonic oscillator, and the construction via the Kasparov product of an indefinite spectral triple from a family of spectr…
We study the neutral Kähler metric on the space of time-like lines in Lorentzian ${\Bbb{E}}^3_1$, which we identify with the total space of the tangent bundle to the hyperbolic plane. We find all of the infinitesimal isometries of this metric, as well as the geodesics, and interpret them in terms of the Lorentzian metric on ${\Bbb{E}}^3_1$. In addition, we give a new characterisation of Weingarten surfaces in Euclidean ${\Bbb{E}}^3$ and Lorentzian ${\Bbb{E}}^3_1$ as the vanishing of the scalar curvature of the associated normal congruence in the space of oriented lines. Finally, we relate our …
Four dimensional simply connected Lie groups admitting a pseudo Kähler metric are determined. The corresponding Lie algebras are modelized and the compatible pairs $(J,ω)$ are parametrized up to complex isomorphism (where $J$ is a complex structure and $ω$ is a symplectic structure). Such structure gives rise to a pseudo Riemannian metric $g$ for which $J$ is parallel. It is proved that most of these complex homogeneous spaces admit a pseudo Kähler Einstein metric. Ricci flat and flat metrics are determined. In particular Ricci flat unimodular Kähler Lie algebras are flat in dimension four. Ot…
We continue the program of Chinea, De Leon and Marrero who studied the topology of cosymplectic manifolds. We study 3-cosymplectic manifolds which are the closest odd-dimensional analogue of hyper-Kaehler structures. We show that there is an action of the Lie algebra so(4,1) on the basic cohomology spaces of a compact 3-cosymplectic manifold with respect to the Reeb foliation. This implies some topological obstructions to the existence of such structures which are expressed by bounds on the Betti numbers. It is known that every 3-cosymplectic manifold is a local Riemannian product of a hyper-K…
We study hyper-spheres, spheres and circles, with respect to an indefinite metric, in a tangent space on a 4-dimensional differentiable manifold. The manifold is equipped with a positive definite metric and an additional tensor structure of type (1, 1)11. The fourth power of the additional structure is minus identity and its components form a skew-circulant matrix in some local coordinate system. The both structures are compatible and they determine an associated indefinite metric on the manifold.
We study the totally null surfaces of the neutral Kaehler metric on certain 4-manifolds. The tangent spaces of totally null surfaces are either self-dual ($α$-planes) or anti-self-dual ($β$-planes) and so we consider $α$-surfaces and $β$-surfaces. The metric of the examples we study, which include the spaces of oriented geodesics of 3-manifolds of constant curvature, are anti-self-dual, and so it is well-known that the $α$-planes are integrable and $α$-surfaces exist. These are holomorphic Lagrangian surfaces, which for the geodesic spaces correspond to totally umbilic foliations of the underl…
Any Kaehler metric on the ball which is strongly asymptotic to complex hyperbolic space and whose scalar curvature is no less than the one of the complex hyperbolic space must be isometrically biholomorphic to it. This result has been known for some time in odd complex dimension and we provide here a proof in even dimension.
This paper is a survey of results obtained by the authors on the geometry of connections with totally skew-symmetric torsion on the following manifolds: almost complex manifolds with Norden metric, almost contact manifolds with B-metric and almost hypercomplex manifolds with Hermitian and anti-Hermitian metric.
Let $X$ be a compact hyperbolic Riemann surface equipped with the Poincaré metric. For any integer $k\geq 2$, we investigate the Bergman kernel associated to the holomorphic Hermitian line bundle $Ω^{\otimes k}_X$, where $Ø$ is the holomorphic cotangent bundle of $X$. Our first main result estimates the corresponding Bergman metric on $X$ in terms of the Poincaré metric. We then consider a certain natural embedding of the symmetric product of $X$ into a Grassmannian parametrizing subspaces of fixed dimension of the space of all global holomorphic sections of $Ω^{\otimes k}_X$. The Fubini-Study…
We improve our previous results on indefinite Kasparov modules, which provide a generalisation of unbounded Kasparov modules modelling non-symmetric and non-elliptic (e.g. hyperbolic) operators. In particular, we can weaken the assumptions that are imposed on indefinite Kasparov modules. Using a new theorem by Lesch and Mesland on the self-adjointness and regularity of the sum of two weakly anticommuting operators, we show that we still have an equivalence between indefinite Kasparov modules and pairs of Kasparov modules. Importantly, the weakened version of indefinite Kasparov modules now inc…
The theory of harmonic vector fields on Riemannian manifolds is generalised to pseudo-Riemannian manifolds. Harmonic conformal gradient fields on pseudo-Euclidean hyperquadrics are classified up to congruence, as are harmonic Killing fields on pseudo-Riemannian quadrics. A para-Kaehler twisted anti-isometry is used to correlate harmonic vector fields on the quadrics of neutral signature.
