Constrained Willmore surfaces are conformal immersions of Riemann surfaces that are critical points of the Willmore energy $W=\int H^2$ under compactly supported infinitesimal conformal variations. Examples include all constant mean curvature surfaces in space forms. In this paper we investigate more generally the critical points of arbitrary geometric functionals on the space of immersions under the constraint that the admissible variations infinitesimally preserve the conformal structure. Besides constrained Willmore surfaces we discuss in some detail examples of constrained minimal and volume critical surfaces, the critical points of the area and enclosed volume functional under the conformal constraint.
We give an overview of the constrained Willmore problem and address some conjectures arising from partial results and numerical experiments. Ramifications of these conjectures would lead to a deeper understanding of the Willmore functional over conformal immersions from compact surfaces.
We show that the homogeneous and the 2-lobe Delaunay tori in the 3-sphere provide the only isothermic constrained Willmore tori in 3-space with Willmore energy below $8π$. In particular, every constrained Willmore torus with Willmore energy below $8π$ and non-rectangular conformal class is non-degenerated.
We show that the well-known family of $2$-lobed Delaunay tori $\;f^b\;$ in $\;S^3,\;$ parametrized by $\;b \in \mathbb R_{\geq1},\;$ uniquely minimizes the Willmore energy among all immersions from tori into $3$-space of conformal class $\;(a, b)\;$. As a corollary we obtain an alternate proof of the Willmore conjecture in $3$-space. This new strategy can be generalized to arbitrary codimensions provided a classification of isothermic constrained Willmore tori is possible and all $\;f^b\;$ remain stable in all codimensions.
The tori $T_r = r S^1 \times s S^1 \subset S^3$, where $r^2 + s^2 = 1$, are constrained Willmore surfaces, i.e. critical points of the Willmore functional among tori of the same conformal type. We compute which of the $T_r$ are stable critical points.
Constrained Willmore surfaces are critical points of the Willmore functional under conformal variations. As shown in [5] one can associate to any conformally immersed constrained Willmore torus f a compact Riemann surface Σ, such that f can be reconstructed in terms of algebraic data on Σ. Particularly interesting examples of constrained Willmore tori are the tori with constant mean curvature (CMC) in a 3-dimensional space form. It is shown in [14] and in [16] that the spectral curves of these tori are hyperelliptic. In this paper we show under mild conditions that a constrained Willmore torus…
In this paper we study equivariant constrained Willmore tori in the 3-sphere. These tori admit a 1-parameter group of Möbius symmetries and are critical points of the Willmore energy under conformal variations. We show that the associated spectral curve of an equivariant torus is given by a double covering of $\mathbb C$ and classify equivariant constrained Willmore tori by the genus g of their spectral curve. In this case the spectral genus satisfies $g \leq 3.$
We use the dressing method to construct transformations of constrained Willmore surfaces in arbitrary codimension. An adaptation of the Terng--Uhlenbeck theory of dressing by simple factors to this context leads us to define Bäcklund transforms of these surfaces for which we prove Bianchi permutability. Specialising to codimension 2, we generalise the Darboux transforms of Willmore surfaces via Riccati equations, due to Burstall-Ferus-Leschke-Pedit-Pinkall, to the constrained Willmore case and show that they amount to our Bäcklund transforms with real spectral parameter.
We apply the method of Lyapunov-Schmidt reduction to study large area-constrained Willmore surfaces in Riemannian 3-manifolds asymptotic to Schwarzschild. In particular, we prove that the end of such a manifold is foliated by distinguished area-constrained Willmore spheres. The leaves are the unique area-constrained Willmore spheres with large area, non-negative Hawking mass, and distance to the center of the manifold at least a small multiple of the area radius. Unlike previous related work, we only require that the scalar curvature satisfies mild asymptotic conditions. We also give explicit …
We study a class of fourth-order geometric problems modelling Willmore surfaces, conformally constrained Willmore surfaces, isoperimetrically constrained Willmore surfaces, bi-harmonic surfaces in the sense of Chen, among others. We prove several local energy estimates and derive a global gap lemma.
In this paper we consider two special classes of constrained Willmore tori in the 3-sphere. The first class is given by the rotation of closed elastic curves in the upper half plane - viewed as the hyperbolic plane - around the x-axis. The second is given as the preimage of closed constrained elastic curves, i.e., elastic curve with enclosed area constraint, in the round 2-sphere under the Hopf fibration. We show that all conformal types can be isometrically immersed into S^3 as constrained Willmore (Hopf) tori and write down all constrained elastic curves in H^2 and S^2 in terms of the Weiers…
We prove that a constrained Willmore immersion of a 2-torus into the conformal 4-sphere is either of "finite type", that is, has a spectral curve of finite genus, or is of "holomorphic type" which means that it is super conformal or Euclidean minimal with planar ends. This implies that all constrained Willmore tori in the 4-sphere can be constructed rather explicitly by methods of complex algebraic geometry. The proof uses quaternionic holomorphic geometry in combination with integrable systems methods similar to those of Hitchin's approach to the study of harmonic tori in the 3-sphere.
We study immersed tori in $3$-space minimizing the Willmore energy in their respective conformal class. Within the rectangular conformal classes $\;(0,b)\;$ with $\;b \sim 1\;$ the homogenous tori $\;f^b\;$ are known to be the unique constrained Willmore minimizers (up to invariance). In this paper we generalize this result and show that the candidates constructed in \cite{HelNdi2} are indeed constrained Willmore minimizers in certain non-rectangular conformal classes $\;(a,b).\;$ Difficulties arise from the fact that these minimizers are non-degenerate for $\;a \neq 0\;$ but smoothly converge…
This work is dedicated to the study of the Moebius invariant class of constrained Willmore surfaces and its symmetries. We define a spectral deformation by the action of a loop of flat metric connections; Baecklund transformations, by applying a dressing action; and, in 4-space, Darboux transformations, based on the solution of a Riccati equation. We establish a permutability between spectral deformation and Baecklund transformation and prove that non-trivial Darboux transformation of constrained Willmore surfaces in 4-space can be obtained as a particular case of Baecklund transformation. All…
We define a hierarchy of special classes of constrained Willmore surfaces by means of the existence of a polynomial conserved quantity of some type, filtered by an integer. Type 1 with parallel top term characterises parallel mean curvature surfaces and, in codimension 1, type 1 characterises constant mean curvature surfaces. We show that this hierarchy is preserved under both spectral deformation and Baecklund transformation, for special choices of parameters, defining, in particular, transformations of constant mean curvature surfaces into new ones, with preservation of the mean curvature, i…
For every $\;b>1\;$ fixed, we explicitly construct $1$-dimensional families of embedded constrained Willmore tori parametrized by their conformal class $\;(a,b)$\; with $\; a \sim_b 0^+\;$ deforming the homogenous torus \;$f^b$ of conformal class \;$(0,b).$ The variational vector field at $f^b$ is hereby given by a non-trivial zero direction of a penalized Willmore stability operator which we show to coincide with a double point of the corresponding spectral curve. Further, we characterize for $b \sim 1$, $b \neq 1$ and $a \sim_b 0^+$ the family obtained by opening the "smallest" double point …
Totally isotropic surfaces in $S^6$ are not necessarily Willmore surfaces. Therefore it is the first goal of this paper to derive a geometric characterization of totally isotropic Willmore two-spheres in $S^6$. This will naturally yield to a description of such surfaces in terms of the loop group language. Moreover, applying the loop group method, we also obtain an algorithm to construct totally isotropic Willmore two-spheres in $S^6$. As an application, a new, totally isotropic Willmore two-sphere which is not S-Willmore (i.e., has no dual surface) in $S^6$ is constructed, illustrating the th…
In this paper we study Willmore Legendrian surfaces (that is Legendrian surfaces which are critical points of the Willmore functional). We use an equality proved in \cite{Luo} to get a relation between Willmore Legendrian surfaces and contact stationary Legendrian surfaces in $\mathbb{S}^5$, and then we use this relation to prove a classification result for Willmore Legendrian spheres in $\mathbb{S}^5$. We also get an integral inequality for Willmore Legendrian surfaces and in particular we prove that if the square length of the second fundamental form of a Willmore Legendrian surface in $\mat…
In this note we demonstrate how the analogy between the harmonic Gauss map of a constant mean curvature surface and the harmonic conformal Gauss map of a Willmore surface can be used to obtain results on Willmore surfaces.
We classify simply-connected, complete Willmore surfaces with vanishing Gaussian curvature. We also study the Willmore cones and give a classification. As an application, we give a Bernstein-type theorem.
In this paper we continue to consider Willmore Legendrian surfaces and csL Willmroe surfaces in $\mathbb{S}^5$, notions introduced by Luo in \cite{Luo}. We will prove that every complete Willmore Legendrian surface in $\mathbb{S}^5$ is minimal and construct nontrivial examples of csL Willmore surfaces in $\mathbb{S}^5$.
Spacelike Willmore surfaces in 4-dimensional Lorentzian space forms, a topic in Lorentzian conformal geometry which parallels the theory of Willmore surfaces in $S^4$, are studied in this paper. We define two kinds of transforms for such a surface, which produce the so-called left/right polar surfaces and the adjoint surfaces. These new surfaces are again conformal Willmore surfaces. For them holds interesting duality theorem. As an application spacelike Willmore 2-spheres are classified. Finally we construct a family of homogeneous spacelike Willmore tori.
In this paper we develop the theory of Willmore sequences for Willmore surfaces in the 4-sphere. We show that under appropriate conditions this sequence has to terminate. In this case the Willmore surface either is the twistor projection of a holomorphic curve into complex projective space or the inversion of a minimal surface with planar ends in 4-space. These results give a unified explanation of previous work on the characterization of Willmore spheres and Willmore tori with non-trivial normal bundles by various authors.
In this paper we prove explicit formulas for all Willmore surfaces of revolution and demonstrate their use in the discussion of the associated Dirichlet boundary value problems. It is shown by an explicit example that symmetric Dirichlet boundary conditions do in general not entail the symmetry of the surface. In addition we prove a symmetry result for a subclass of Willmore surfaces satisfying symmetric Dirichlet boundary data.
In this paper we provide a systematic discussion of how to incorporate orientation preserving symmetries into the treatment of Willmore surfaces via the loop group method. In this context we first develop a general treatment of Willmore surfaces admitting orientation preserving symmetries, and then show how to induce finite order rotational symmetries. We also prove, for the symmetric space which is the target space of the conformal Gauss map of Willmore surfaces in spheres, the longstanding conjecture of the existence of meromorphic invariant potentials for the conformal Gauss maps of all com…
Applying the DPW version of the theory developed by Burstall and Guest for harmonic maps of finite uniton type, we derive a coarse classification of Willmore two-spheres in $S^{n+2}$ in terms of the normalized potential of their (harmonic) conformal Gauss maps. Moreover, for the case of $S^6$, some geometric properties of the corresponding Willmore two-spheres are discussed. The classical classification of Willmore two-spheres in $S^4$ are also derived as a corollary.
We discuss several kinds of Willmore surfaces of flat normal bundle in this paper. First we show that every S-Willmore surface with flat normal bundle in $S^n$ must locate in some $S^3\subset S^n$, from which we characterize Clifford torus as the only non-equatorial homogeneous minimal surface in $S^n$ with flat normal bundle, which improve a result of K. Yang. Then we derived that every Willmore two sphere with flat normal bundle in $S^n$ is conformal to a minimal surface with embedded planer ends in $\mathbb{R}^3$. We also point out that for a class of Willmore tori, they have flat normal bu…
In this note we consider homogeneous Willmore surfaces in $S^{n+2}$. The main result is that a homogeneous Willmore two-sphere is conformally equivalent to a homogeneous minimal two-sphere in $S^{n+2}$, i.e., either a round two-sphere or one of the Borůvka-Veronese 2-spheres in $S^{2m}$. This entails a classification of all Willmore $\mathbb{C} P^1$ in $S^{2m}$. As a second main result we show that there exists no homogeneous Willmore upper-half plane in $S^{n+2}$ and we give, in terms of special constant potentials, a simple loop group characterization of all homogeneous surfaces which have a…
After the surface theory of Möbius geometry, this study concerns a pair of conformally immersed surfaces in $n$-sphere. Two new invariants $θ$ and $ρ$ associated with them are introduced as well as the notion of touch and co-touch. This approach is helpful in research about transforms of certain surface classes. As an application, we define adjoint transform for any given Willmore surface in $n$-sphere. It always exists locally (yet not unique in general) and generalizes known duality theorems of Willmore surfaces. This theory on surface pairs reaches its high point by a characterization of ad…
We consider the generalization of classical Blaschke's Problem to higher codimension case, characterizing Darboux pair of isothermic surfaces and dual S-Willmore surfaces as the only non-trivial surface pairs that envelop a 2-sphere congruence and conformally correspond to each other. When the sphere congruence is the mean curvature spheres of one envelop surface, it must be a cmc-1 surface in hyperbolic 3-space, or a S-Willmore surface. A study of conformally immersed surface pairs is indicated with discussion on the geometric meaning of new invariants.
The classification of Willmore 2-spheres in the $n$-dimensional sphere $S^n$ is a long-standing problem, solved only when $n=3,4$ by Bryant, Ejiri, Musso and Montiel independently. In this paper we give a classification when $n=5$. There are three types of such surfaces up to Möbius transformations: (1) super-conformal surfaces in $S^4$; (2) minimal surfaces in $R^5$; (3) adjoint transforms of super-conformal minimal surfaces in $R^5$. In particular, Willmore surfaces in the third class are not S-Willmore (i.e., without a dual Willmore surface). To show the existence of Willmore 2-spheres in $…
The paper builds a DPW approach of Willmore surfaces via conformal Gauss maps. As applications, we provide descriptions of minimal surfaces in $\mathbb R^{n+2}$, isotropic surfaces in $S^4$ and homogeneous Willmore tori via the loop group method. A new example of a Willmore two-sphere in $S^6$ without dual surfaces is also presented.
In this paper, we study the critical case of the Allard regularity theorem. Combining with Reifenberg's topological disk theorem, we get a critical Allard-Reifenberg type regularity theorem. As a main result, we get the topological finiteness for a class of properly immersed surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^n$ with finite Willmore energy. Especially, we prove a removability of singularity of multiplicity one surface with finite Willmore energy and a uniqueness theorem of the catenoid under no a priori topological finiteness assumption.
It is well known that the umbilic points of minimal surfaces in spaces of constant sectional curvature consist only of isolated points unless the surface is totally umbilic on some connected component, as for example the Hopf form is holomorphic. In this note, we prove that on Willmore surfaces in codimension one the umbilic set is locally a one dimensional real-analytic manifold without boundary or an isolated point.
This paper studies the regularity of constrained Willmore immersions into $\R^{m\ge3}$ locally around both "regular" points and around branch points, where the immersive nature of the map degenerates. We develop local asymptotic expansions for the immersion, its first, and its second derivatives, given in terms of residues which are computed as circulation integrals. We deduce explicit "point removability" conditions ensuring that the immersion is smooth. Our results apply in particular to Willmore immersions and to parallel mean curvature immersions in any codimension.
In this paper we make a detailed and self-contained study of the conformalGauss map. Then, starting from the seminal work of R. Bryant and the notion of conformal Gauss map, we recover many fundamental properties of Willmore surfaces. We also get new results like some characterizations of minimal and constant meancurvature (CMC) surfaces in term of their conformal Gauss map behavior.
We study the generalization of the Willmore functional for surfaces in the three-Heisenberg group. Its construction is based on the spectral theory of the Dirac operator coming to the Weierstrass representation of surfaces (see math.DG/0503707). By using surfaces of revolution we demonstrate that it resembles the Willmore functional for surfaces in the Euclidean space in many geometrical respects. We also observe the relation of these functionals to the isoperimetric problem.
In this paper we show that locally there exists a Willmore deformation between minimal surfaces in $S^{n+2}$ and minimal surfaces in $H^{n+2}$, i.e., there exists a smooth family of Willmore surfaces $\{y_t,t\in[0,1]\}$ such that $(y_t)|_{t=0}$ is conformally equivalent to a minimal surface in $S^{n+2}$ and $(y_t)|_{t=1}$ is conformally equivalent to a minimal surface in $H^{n+2}$. For some cases the deformations are global. Consider the Willmore deformations of the Veronese two-sphere and its generalizations in $S^4$, for any positive number $W_0\in\mathbb R^+$, we construct complete minimal …
We refine the Lyapunov-Schmidt analysis developed in our recent paper arxiv:2101.12665 to study the geometric center of mass of the asymptotic foliation by area-constrained Willmore surfaces of initial data for the Einstein field equations. If the scalar curvature of the initial data vanishes at infinity, we show that this geometric center of mass agrees with the Hamiltonian center of mass. By contrast, we show that the position of large area-constrained Willmore surfaces is sensitive to the distribution of the energy density. In particular, the geometric center of mass may differ from the Ham…
In this paper we provide a systematic treatment of Willmore surfaces with orientation reversing symmetries and illustrate the theory by (old and new) examples. We apply our theory to isotropic Willmore two-spheres in $S^4$ and derive a necessary condition for such ( possibly branched) isotropic surfaces to descend to (possibly branched) maps from $\mathbb{R} P^2$ to $S^4$. The Veronese sphere and several other examples of non-branched Willmore immersions from $\mathbb{R} P^2$ to $S^4$ are derived as an illustration of the general theory. The Willmore immersions of $\mathbb{R} P^2$, just mentio…
We show the existence of a local foliation of a three dimensional Riemannian manifold by critical points of the Willmore functional subject to a small area constraint around non-degenerate critical points of the scalar curvature. This adapts a method developed by Rugang Ye to construct foliations by surfaces of constant mean curvature.
We find analogues of the Willmore functional for each of the Thurston geometries with 4-dimensional isometry group such that the CMC-spheres in these geometries are critical points of these functionals.
A Willmore surface $y:M\rightarrow S^{n+2}$ has a natural harmonic oriented conformal Gauss map $Gr_y:M\rightarrow SO^{+}(1,n+3)/SO(1,3)\times SO(n)$, which maps each point $p\in M$ to its oriented mean curvature 2-sphere at $p$. An easy observation shows that all conformal Gauss maps of Willmore surfaces satisfy a restricted nilpotency condition which will be called "strongly conformally harmonic." The goal of this paper is to characterize those strongly conformally harmonic maps from a Riemann surface $M$ to $SO^+ (1, n + 3)/{SO^+(1, 3) \times SO(n) }$ which are the conformal Gauss maps of s…
Willmore surfaces are the extremals of the Willmore functional (possibly under a constraint on the conformal structure). With the characterization of Willmore surfaces by the (possibly perturbed) harmonicity of the mean curvature sphere congruence [Blaschke, Ejiri, Rigoli, Burstall-Calderbank], a zero-curvature formulation follows [Burstall-Calderbank]. Deformations on the level of harmonic maps prove to give rise to deformations on the level of surfaces, with the definition of a spectral deformation [Burstall-Pedit-Pinkall, Burstall-Calderbank] and of a Baecklund transformation [Burstall-Quin…
Let $f:\mathbb{C}\rightarrow \mathbb{R}^3$ be complete Willmore immersion with $\int_Σ|A_f|^2<+\infty$. We will show that if $f$ is the limit of an embedded surface sequence, then $f$ is a plane. As an application, we prove that if $Σ_k$ is a sequence of closed Willmore surface embedded in $\mathbb{R}^3$ with $W(Σ_k)<C$, and if the conformal class of $Σ_k$ converges in the moduli space, then we can find a Möbius transformation $σ_k$, such that a subsequence of $σ_k(Σ_k)$ converges smoothly.
The family of Willmore immersions from a Riemann surface into $S^{n+2}$ can be divided naturally into the subfamily of Willmore surfaces conformally equivalent to a minimal surface in $\R^{n+2}$ and those which are not conformally equivalent to a minimal surface in $\R^{n+2}$. On the level of their conformal Gauss maps into $Gr_{1,3}(\R^{1,n+3})=SO^+(1,n+3)/SO^+(1,3)\times SO(n)$ these two classes of Willmore immersions into $S^{n+2}$ correspond to conformally harmonic maps for which every image point, considered as a 4-dimensional Lorentzian subspace of $\R^{1,n+3}$, contains a fixed lightlik…
In this paper we deal with the global properties of Willmore surfaces in spheres via the harmonic conformal Gauss map using loop groups. We first derive a global description of those harmonic maps which can be realized as conformal Gauss maps of some Willmore surfaces (Theorem 3.4, Theorem 3.11 and Theorem 3.18). Then we introduce the DPW procedure for these harmonic maps, and state appropriate versions of the Iwasawa decomposition and the Birkhoff decomposition Theorems. In particular, we show how the harmonic maps associated with Willmore surfaces can be constructed in terms of loop groups. …
We propose the study of a conformally invariant functional for surfaces of complex projective plane which is closely related to the classical Willmore functional. We show that minimal surfaces of complex projective plane are critical for this functional and construct some minima for it via the twistors spaces of complex projective plane. Also, we find lower bounds for this functional and for its restriction to the class of Lagrangian surfaces and characterize the complex lines and the Lagrangian totally geodesic surfaces and the Whitney spheres as the only attaining those bounds.
Instead of investigating the Willmore flow for two-dimensional, closed immersed surfaces directly we turn to its inversion. We give a lower bound on the lifespan of this inverse Willmore flow, depending on the concentration of curvature in space and the extension of the initial surface, as well as a characterization of its breakdown, which might occur in finite time.
We study Willmore surfaces of constant Moebius curvature $K$ in $S^4$. It is proved that such a surface in $S^3$ must be part of a minimal surface in $R^3$ or the Clifford torus. Another result in this paper is that an isotropic surface (hence also Willmore) in $S^4$ of constant $K$ could only be part of a complex curve in $C^2\cong R^4$ or the Veronese 2-sphere in $S^4$. It is conjectured that they are the only examples possible. The main ingredients of the proofs are over-determined systems and isoparametric functions.
Ejiri's torus in $S^5$ is the first example of Willmore surface which is not conformally equivalent to any minimal surface in any space forms. Li and Vrancken classified all Willmore surfaces of tensor product in $S^{n}$ by reducing them into elastic curves in $S^3$, and the Ejiri torus appeared as a special example. In this paper, we first prove that among all Willmore tori of tensor product, the Willmore functional of the Ejiri torus in $S^5$ attains the minimum $2π^2\sqrt{3}$. Then we show that all Willmore tori of tensor product are unstable when the co-dimension is big enough. We also sho…
