The space ${\Bbb{L}}$ of oriented lines, or rays, in ${\Bbb{R}}^3$ is a 4-dimensional space with an abundance of natural geometric structure. In particular, it boasts a neutral Kähler metric which is closely related to the Euclidean metric on ${\Bbb{R}}^3$. In this paper we explore the relationship between the focal set of a line congruence (or 2-parameter family of oriented lines in ${\Bbb{R}}^3$) and the geometry induced on the associated surface in ${\Bbb{L}}$. The physical context of such sets is geometric optics in a homogeneous isotropic medium, and so, to illustrate the method, we compute the focal set of the $k^{th}$ reflection of a point source off the inside of a cylinder. The focal sets, which we explicitly parameterize, exhibit unexpected symmetries, and are found to fit well with observable phenomena.
We prove an estimate on the difference of Maslov indices relative to the choice of two distinct reference Lagrangians of a continuous path in the Lagrangian Grassmannian of a symplectic space. We discuss some applications to the study of conjugate and focal points along a geodesic in a semi-Riemannian manifold.
In this paper, we study transnormal functions and their level sets and focal varieties on complete Finsler manifolds. We prove that the focal varieties of a C2 transnormal function are smooth submanifolds and each regular level set is a tube over either of the focal varieties.
In this paper we study the affine focal set, which is the bifurcation set of the affine distance to submanifolds $N^n$ contained in hypersurfaces $M^{n+1}$ of the $(n+2)$-space. We give condition under which this affine focal set is a regular hypersurface and, for curves in $3$-space, we describe its stable singularities. For a given Darboux vector field $ξ$ of the immersion $N\subset M$, one can define the affine metric $g$ and the affine normal plane bundle $\mathcal{A}$. We prove that the $g$-Laplacian of the position vector belongs to $\mathcal{A}$ if and only if $ξ$ is parallel. For umbil…
We study the geometry of curves in the Minkowski space and in the de Sitter space, specially at points where the tangent direction is lightlike (i.e. has length zero) called lightlike points of the curve. We define the focal sets of these curves and study the metric structure of them. At the lightlike points, the focal set is not defined. We use singularity theory techniques to carry out our study and investigate the focal set near lightlike points.
We investigate the problem of the stability of the number of conjugate or focal points (counted with multiplicity) along a semi-Riemannian geodesic $γ$. For a Riemannian or a non spacelike Lorentzian geodesic, such number is equal to the intersection number (Maslov index) of a continuous curve with a subvariety of codimension one of the Lagrangian Grassmannian of a symplectic space. Such intersection number is proven to be stable in a large variety of circumstances. In the general semi-Riemannian case, under suitable hypotheses this number is equal to an algebraic count of the multiplicities o…
We prove that the focal set generated by the reflection of a point source off a translation invariant surface consists of two sets: a curve and a surface. The focal curve lies in the plane orthogonal to the symmetry direction containing the source, while the focal surface is translation invariant. This is done by constructing explicitly the focal set of the reflected line congruence (2-parameter family of oriented lines in ${\Bbb{R}}^3$) with the aid of the natural complex structure on the space of all oriented affine lines.
The focal locus $Σ_X$ of an affine variety $X$ is roughly speaking the (projective) closure of the set of points $O$ for which there is a smooth point $x \in X$ and a circle with centre $O$ passing through $x$ which osculates $X$ in $x$. Algebraic geometry interprets the focal locus as the branching locus of the endpoint map $ε$ between the Euclidean normal bundle $N_X$ and the projective ambient space ($ε$ sends the normal vector $O-x$ to its endpoint $O$), and in this paper we address two general problems : 1) Characterize the "degenerate" case where the focal locus is not a hypersurface 2) …
We study the geometry of homogeneous hypersurfaces and their focal sets in complex hyperbolic spaces. In particular, we provide a characterization of the focal set in terms of its second fundamental form and determine the principal curvatures of the homogeneous hypersurfaces together with their multiplicities.
The focal sets of isoparametric hypersurfaces in spheres with g = 4 are all Willmore submanifolds, being minimal but mostly non-Einstein ([TY1], [QTY]). Inspired by A.Gray's view, the present paper shows that, these focal sets are all A- manifolds but rarely Ricci parallel, except possibly for the only unclassified case. As a byproduct, it gives infinitely many simply-connected examples to the problem 16.56 (i) of Besse concerning generalizations of the Einstein condition.
We show the flexibility of the metric entropy and obtain additional restrictions on the topological entropy of geodesic flow on closed surfaces of negative Euler characteristic with smooth non-positively curved Riemannian metrics with fixed total area in a fixed conformal class. Moreover, we obtain a collar lemma, a thick-thin decomposition, and precompactness for the considered class of metrics. Also, we extend some of the results to metrics of fixed total area in a fixed conformal class with no focal points and with some integral bounds on the positive part of the Gaussian curvature.
We study the geometry of bifurcation sets of generic unfoldings of $D_4^\pm$-functions. Taking blow-ups, we show each of the bifurcation sets of $D_4^\pm$-functions admit a parametrization as a surface in $R^3$. Using this parametrization, we investigate the behavior of the Gaussian curvature and the principal curvatures. Furthermore, we investigate the number of ridge curves and subparabolic curves near their singular point.
We describe a diagram containing the zero sets of the moment maps associated to the diagonal U(1) and Sp(1) actions on the quaternionic projective space HP^n. These sets are related both to focal sets of submanifolds and to Sasakian-Einstein structures on induced Hopf bundles. As an application, we construct a complex structure on the Stiefel manifolds V_2 (C^{n+1}) and V_4 (R^{n+1}), the one on the former manifold not being compatible with its known hypercomplex structure.
Let K be an algebraically closed field endowed with a complete non-archimedean norm with valuation ring R. Let f:Y -> X be a map of K-affinoid varieties. In this paper we study the analytic structure of the image f(Y) in X; such an image is a typical example of a subanalytic set. We show that the subanalytic sets are precisely the D-semianalytic sets, where D is the truncated division function first introduced by Denef and van den Dries. This result is most conveniently stated as a Quantifier Elimination result for the valuation ring R in an analytic expansion of the language of valued fields.
The fundamental group of a hyperbolic manifold acts on the limit set, giving rise to a cross-product C^* algebra. We construct nontrivial K-cycles for the cross-product algebra, thereby extending some results of Connes and Sullivan to higher dimensions. We also show how the Patterson-Sullivan measure on the limit set can be interpreted as a center-valued KMS state.
Basic aspects of the equiaffine geometry of level sets are developed systematically. As an application there are constructed families of $2n$-dimensional nondegenerate hypersurfaces ruled by $n$-planes, having equiaffine mean curvature zero, and solving the affine normal flow. Each carries a symplectic structure with respect to which the ruling is Lagrangian.
Conflict sets are loci of intersecting wavefronts emanating from $l$ different surfaces. We show that generically conflict sets are Legendrian: locally they admit the structure of wavefronts. Simple stable singularities for this problem in $\R^n$ occur when $0 \leq n-l \leq 4$. Other related sets, such as kite curves and centre sets are also defined and discussed. Throughout canonical relations are used as an essential tool to carry out several of these geometrical constructions.
The authors study smooth lines on projective planes over the algebra C of complex numbers, the algebra C^1 of double numbers, and the algebra C^0 of dual numbers. In the space RP^5, to these smooth lines there correspond families of straight lines describing point three-dimensional tangentially degenerate submanifolds X^3 of rank 2. The authors study focal properties of these submanifolds and prove that they represent examples of different types of tangentially degenerate submanifolds. Namely, the submanifold X^3, corresponding in RP^5 to a smooth line γof the projective plane C, does not have…
In this paper we present a new approach to the study of asymptotically flat static metrics arising in general relativity. In the case where the static potential is bounded, we introduce new quantities which are proven to be monotone along the level set flow of the potential function. We then show how to use these properties to detect the rotational symmetry of the static solutions, deriving a number of sharp inequalities. As a consequence of our analysis, a simple proof of the classical $3$-dimensional Black Hole Uniqueness Theorem is recovered and some geometric conditions are discussed under…
Classical Sturm non-oscillation and comparison theorems as well as the Sturm theorem on zeros for solutions of second order differential equations have a natural symplectic version, since they describe the rotation of a line in the phase plane of the equation. In the higher dimensional symplectic version of these theorems, lines are replaced by Lagrangian subspaces and intersections with a given line are replaced by non-transversality instants with a distinguished Lagrangian subspace. Thus the symplectic Sturm theorems describe some properties of the Maslov index. Starting from the celebrated …
In the 3-dimensional Riemannian geometry, contact structures equipped with an adapted Riemannian metric are divergence-free, nondegenerate eigenforms of the Laplace-Beltrami operator. We trace out a 2-d analogue of this fact: there is a close relationship between the topology of the contact structure on a convex surface in the 3-manifold (the dividing curves) and the nodal curves of Laplacian eigenfunctions on that surface. Motivated by this relationship, we consider a topological version of Payne's conjecture for the free membrane problem. We construct counterexamples to Payne's conjecture fo…
We prove that a theorem of Pawlucki, showing that Whitney regularity for a subanalytic set with a smooth singular locus of codimension one implies the set is a finite union of differentiable manifolds with boundary, applies to definable sets in polynomially bounded o-minimal structures. We give a refined version of Pawlucki's theorem for arbitrary o-minimal structures, replacing Whitney (b)-regularity by a quantified version, and we prove related results concerning normal cones and continuity of the density. We analyse two counterexamples to the extension of Pawlucki's theorem to definable set…
