Conflict sets are loci of intersecting wavefronts emanating from $l$ different surfaces. We show that generically conflict sets are Legendrian: locally they admit the structure of wavefronts. Simple stable singularities for this problem in $\R^n$ occur when $0 \leq n-l \leq 4$. Other related sets, such as kite curves and centre sets are also defined and discussed. Throughout canonical relations are used as an essential tool to carry out several of these geometrical constructions.
We use hyperbolic geometry to construct simply-connected symplectic or complex manifolds with trivial canonical bundle and with no compatible Kahler structure. We start with the desingularisations of the quadric cone in C^4: the smoothing is a natural S^3-bundle over H^3, its holomorphic geometry is determined by the hyperbolic metric; the small-resolution is a natural S^2-bundle over H^4 with symplectic geometry determined by the metric. Using hyperbolic geometry, we find orbifold quotients with trivial canonical bundle; smooth examples are produced via crepant resolutions. In particular, we …
The canonical involution of a double (=iterated) tangent bundle may be dualized in different ways to yield relations between the Tulczyjew diffeomorphism, the Poisson anchor associated with the standard symplectic structure on the cotangent space, and the reversal diffeomorphism. We show that the constructions which yield these maps extend very generally to the double Lie algebroids of double Lie groupoids, where they play a crucial role in the relations between double Lie algebroids and Lie bialgebroids.
We give a differential geometric description of the Cartan (or tractor) bundle and its canonical connection in CR geometry, thus offering a direct, alternative, definition to the usual abstract approach.
In this paper, following the constructions of N. R. O'Brian, J. H. Rawnsley and I. Vaisman, we define four almost Hermitian structures (up to conjugation) on the twistor space of a Hermitian surface by using canonical connections, including the Lichnerowicz connection and the Chern connection. We also study the relations between the natural geometry of the twistor spaces and the geometry of Hermitian surfaces.
A Lie group G has many left invariant metrics having drastically different curvature properties. If we regard G as a flat and globalizable absolute parallelism as in [O1], then G has a canonical metric. We study some surprising consequences of this shift in perspective.
We study variuos homological structures associated with Poisson algebra, the canonical differential complex for singular Poisson structure and the analogue of the star operator for such manifolds. Give the interpretation of the classical Koszul differential of exterior forms, as the supercommutator with some second order element. Describe the space of invariant distributions on manifold with singular Poisson structure.
It is known that a closed collapsed Riemannian $n$-manifold $(M,g)$ of bounded Ricci curvature and Reifenberg local covering geometry admits a nilpotent structure in the sense of Cheeger-Fukaya-Gromov with respect to a smoothed metric $g(t)$. We prove that a canonical nilpotent structure over a regular limit space that describes the collapsing of original metric $g$ can be defined and uniquely determined up to a conjugation, and prove that the nilpotent structures arising from nearby metrics $g_ε$ with respect to $g_ε$'s sectional curvature bound are equivalent to the canonical one.
In this paper we study some geometrical objects (d-tensors, multi-time semisprays of polymomenta and nonlinear connections) on the dual 1-jet vector bundle $J^{1*}(\cal{T}, M)\to \cal{T}\times M$. Some geometrical formulas, which connect the last two geometrical objects, are also derived. Finally, a canonical nonlinear connection produced by a Kronecker $h$-regular multi-time Hamiltonian is given.
We reconsider the (rational) Calogero-Moser system from the point of view of bi-Hamiltonian geometry. By using geometrical tools of the latter, we explicitly construct set(s) of spectral canonical coordinates, that is, complete sets of Darboux coordinates defined by the eigenvalues and the eigenvectors of the Lax matrix.
In Riemannian geometry geodesics are integral curves of the Riemannian distance gradient. We extend this classical result to the framework of Information Geometry. In particular, we prove that the rays of level-sets defined by a pseudo-distance are generated by the sum of two tangent vectors. By relying on these vectors, we propose a novel definition of a canonical divergence and its dual function. We prove that the new divergence allows to recover a given dual structure $(\mathrm{g},\nabla,\nabla^*)$ of {a dually convex set on} a smooth manifold $\mathrm{M}$. Additionally, we show that this d…
This paper studies the Fisher-Rao geometry on the parameter space of beta distributions. We derive the geodesic equations and the sectional curvature, and prove that it is negative. This leads to uniqueness for the Riemannian centroid in that space. We use this Riemannian structure to study canonical moments, an intrinsic representation of the moments of a probability distribution. Drawing on the fact that a uniform distribution in the regular moment space corresponds to a product of beta distributions in the canonical moment space, we propose a mapping from the space of canonical moments to t…
In sub-Riemannian geometry the coefficients of the Jacobi equation define curvature-like invariants. We show that these coefficients can be interpreted as the curvature of a canonical Ehresmann connection associated to the metric, first introduced in [Zelenko-Li]. We show why this connection is naturally nonlinear, and we discuss some of its properties.
We construct a canonically defined affine connection in sub-Riemannian contact geometry. Our method mimics that of the Levi-Civita connection in Riemannian geometry. We compare it with the Tanaka-Webster connection in the three-dimensional case.
We study a discrete dynamical system designed to find a 'most holomorphic' connection on a smooth complex vector bundle $E$. We examine the relation between the distance of the chern classes of $E$ from the $(p,p)$ axis of the Hodge diamond and singularity formation. Canonical connections and canonical metrics pulled back from Grassmannians play a major role, and we review their differential geometry. As an exercise in the geometry of canonical connections, we include an expression for the curvature in terms of heat kernels.
String backgrounds and D-branes do not possess the structure of Lorentzian manifolds, but that of manifolds with area metric. Area metric geometry is a true generalization of metric geometry, which in particular may accommodate a B-field. While an area metric does not determine a connection, we identify the appropriate differential geometric structure which is of relevance for the minimal surface equation in such a generalized geometry. In particular the notion of a derivative action of areas on areas emerges naturally. Area metric geometry provides new tools in differential geometry, which pr…
Let $X$ be a simple normal crossing (SNC) compact complex surface with trivial canonical bundle which includes triple intersections. We prove that if $X$ is $d$-semistable, then there exists a family of smoothings in a differential geometric sense. This can be interpreted as a differential geometric analogue of the smoothability results due to Friedman, Kawamata-Namikawa, Felten-Filip-Ruddat, Chan-Leung-Ma, and others in algebraic geometry. The proof is based on an explicit construction of local smoothings around the singular locus of $X$, and the first author's existence result of holomorphic…
A comparison among different constructions of the quaternionic $4$-form $Φ_{Sp(2)Sp(1)}$ and of the Cayley calibration $Φ_{Spin(7)}$ shows that one can start for them from the same collections of "Kähler 2-forms", entering in dimension 8 both in quaternion Kähler and in $Spin(7)$ geometry. This comparison relates with the notions of even Clifford structure and of Clifford system. Going to dimension $16$, similar constructions allow to write explicit formulas for the canonical $4$-forms $Φ_{Spin(8)}$ and $Φ_{Spin(7)U(1)}$, associated with Clifford systems related with the subgroups $Spin(8)$ an…
We investigate the holonomy group of singular Kähler-Einstein metrics on klt varieties with numerically trivial canonical divisor. Finiteness of the number of connected components, a Bochner principle for holomorphic tensors, and a connection between irreducibility of holonomy representations and stability of the tangent sheaf are established. As a consequence, known decompositions for tangent sheaves of varieties with trivial canonical divisor are refined. In particular, we show that up to finite quasi-étale covers, varieties with strongly stable tangent sheaf are either Calabi-Yau or irreduc…
In this paper we give an axiomatization of differential geometry comparable to model categories for homotopy theory. Weil functors play a predominant role.
We study the fundamental properties of curvature in groupoids within the framework of synthetic differential geometry. As is usual in synthetic differential geometry, its combinatorial nature is emphasized. In particular, the classical Bianchi identity is deduced from its combinatorial one.
In this paper is proposed a kind of model theory for our axiomatic differential geometry. It is claimed that smooth manifolds, which have occupied the center stage in differential geometry, should be replaced by functors on the category of Weil algebras. Our model theory is geometrically natural and conceptually motivated, while the model theory of synthetic differential geometry is highly artificial and exquisitely technical.
We refurbish our axiomatics of differential geometry introduced in [Mathematics for Applications,, 1 (2012), 171-182]. Then the notion of Euclideaness can naturally be formulated. The principal objective in this paper is to present an adaptation of our theory of differential forms developed in [International Journal of Pure and Applied Mathematics, 64 (2010), 85-102] to our present axiomatic framework.
In our previous paper entitled "Axiomatic differential geometry -towards model categories of differential geometry-, we have given a category-theoretic framework of differential geometry. As the first part of our series of papers concerned with differential-geometric developments within the above axiomatic scheme, this paper is devoted to vector fields. The principal result is that the totality of vector fields on a microlinear and Weil exponential object forms a Lie algebra.
We present the first steps of a procedure which discretises surface theory in classical projective differential geometry in such a manner that underlying integrable structure is preserved. We propose a canonical frame in terms of which the associated projective Gauss-Weingarten and Gauss-Mainardi-Codazzi equations adopt compact forms. Based on a scaling symmetry which injects a parameter into the linear Gauss-Weingarten equations, we set down an algebraic classification scheme of discrete projective minimal surfaces which turns out to admit a geometric counterpart formulated in terms of discre…
We consider complete nearly Kähler manifolds with the canonical Hermitian connection. We prove some metric properties of strict nearly Kähler manifolds and give a sufficient condition for the reducibility of the canonical Hermitian connection. A holonomic condition for a nearly Kähler manifold to be a twistor space over a quaternionic Kähler manifold is given. This enables us to give classification results in 10-dimensions.
Chen's iterated integrals are treated within synthetic differential geometry. The main result is that iterated integrals produce a subcomplex of the de Rham complex on the free path space as well as based path spaces.
In our previous paper (Axiomatic Differential Geometry II-3) we have discussed the general Jacobi identity, from which the Jacobi identity of vector fields follows readily. In this paper we derive Jacobi-like identities of tangent-vector-valued forms from the general Jacobi identity.
Given a complete and (locally) cartesian closed category U, it is shown that the category of functors from the category of Weil algebras to the category U is (locally, resp.) cartesian closed. The corresponding axiomatization for differential geometry based upon Weil functors is then given.
In this paper, as the second in our series of papers on differential geometry of microlinear Frolicher spaces, we study differenital forms. The principal result is that the exterior differentiation is uniquely determined geometrically, just as grad (ient), div (ergence) and rot (ation) are uniquely determined geometrically or physically in classical vector calculus. This infinitesimal characterization of exterior differentiation has been completely missing in orthodox differential geometry.
The covariant canonical formalism is a covariant extension of the traditional canonical formalism of fields. In contrast to the traditional canonical theory, it has a remarkable feature that canonical equations of gauge theories or gravity are not only manifestly Lorentz covariant but also gauge covariant or diffeomorphism covariant. A mathematical peculiarity of the covariant canonical formalism is that its canonical coordinates are differential forms on a manifold. In the present paper, we find a natural Poisson bracket of this new canonical theory, and study symplectic structure behind it. …
We prove that a smooth complex projective threefold with a Kähler metric of negative holomorphic sectional curvature has ample canonical line bundle. In dimensions greater than three, we prove that, under equal assumptions, the nef dimension of the canonical line bundle is maximal. With certain additional assumptions, ampleness is again obtained. The methods used come from both complex differential geometry and complex algebraic geometry.
As the fourth paper of our series of papers concerned with axiomatic differential geometry, this paper is devoted to the general Jacobi identity supporting the Jacobi identity of vector fields. The general Jacobi identity can be regarded as one of the few fundamental results belonging properly to smootheology.
We prove the existence of canonical tubular neighbourhoods around complex submanifolds of Kähler manifolds that are adapted to both the holomorphic and symplectic structure. This is done by solving the complex Homogeneous Monge-Ampère equation on the deformation to the normal cone of the submanifold. We use this to establish local regularity for global weak solutions, giving local smoothness to the (weak) geodesic rays in the space of (weak) Kähler potentials associated to a given complex submanifold. We also use it to get an optimal regularity result for naturally defined plurisubharmonic env…
Some differential equations are considered in the context of Synthetic Differential Geometry. Here, this means that not only nilpotent infinitesimals, but also the formation of function spaces, is exploited. In particular, we utilize distribution spaces in our study of wave and heat equations.
In this paper, we establish equiform differential geometry of space and timelike curves in 4-dimensional Minkowski space. We obtain some conditions for these curves. Also, general helices with respect to their equiform curvatures are characterized.
A nilmanifold is a quotient of a nilpotent group $G$ by a co-compact discrete subgroup. A complex nilmanifold is one which is equipped with a $G$-invariant complex structure. We prove that a complex nilmanifold has trivial canonical bundle. This is used to study hypercomplex nilmanifolds (nilmanifolds with a triple of $G$-invariant complex structures which satisfy quaternionic relations). We prove that a hypercomplex nilmanifold admits an HKT (hyperkahler with torsion) metric if and only if the underlying hypercomplex structure is abelian. Moreover, any $G$-invariant HKT-metric on a nilmanifol…
Just as the Jacobi identity of vector fields is a natural consequence of the general Jacobi identity of microcubes in synthetic differential geometry, it is to be shown in this paper that the graded Jacobi identity of the Frolicher-Nijenhuis bracket is also a natural consequence of the general Jacobi identity.
This is the first part of the lecture notes that grew out of the special course given during the 2021-2022 academic year. In these lecture notes we present an approach to the fundamental structures of differential geometry that uses the vernacular of sheaves, differential operators and horizontal subbundles.
It is proved by Kawamata that the canonical bundle of a projective manifold is semi-ample if it is big and nef. We give an analytic proof using the Ricci flow, degeneration of Riemannian manifolds and $L^2$-theory. Combined with our earlier results, we construct unique singular Kahler-Einstein metrics with a global Riemannian structure on canonical models. Our approach can be viewed as the Kodaira embedding theorem on singular metric spaces with canonical Kahler metrics.
Parametric Cartan theory of exterior differential systems, and explicit cohomology of projective manifolds reveal united rationality features of differential algebraic geometry.
We study Riemannian geometry of canonical Kahler-Einstein currents on projective Calabi-Yau varieties and canonical models of general type with crepant singularities. We prove that the metric completion of the regular part of such a canonical current is a compact metric length space homeomorphic to the original projective variety, with well-defined tangent cones. We also prove a special degeneration for Kahler-Einstein manifolds of general type as an approach to establish the compactification of the moduli space of Kahler-Einstein manifolds of general type. A number of applications are given f…
In this work, differential geometry of the Z$_3$-graded quantum superplane is constructed. The corresponding quantum Lie superalgebra and its Hopf algebra structure are obtained.
Segre embedding was introduced by C. Segre (1863--1924) in his famous 1891 article \cite{segre}. The Segre embedding plays an important roles in algebraic geometry as well as in differential geometry, mathematical physics, and coding theory. In this article, we survey main results on Segre embedding in differential geometry. Moreover, we also present recent differential geometric results on maps and immersions which are constructed in ways similar to Segre embedding.
For particles constrained on a curved surface, how to perform quantization within Dirac's canonical quantization scheme is a long-standing problem. On one hand, Dirac stressed that the Cartesian coordinate system has fundamental importance in passing from the classical Hamiltonian to its quantum mechanical form while preserving the classical algebraic structure between positions, momenta and Hamiltonian to the extent possible. On the other, on the curved surface, we have no exact Cartesian coordinate system within intrinsic geometry. These two facts imply that the three-dimensional Euclidean s…
Differential geometry of the quantum Lie superalgebra of the extended quantum superplane and its Z$_2$-graded Hopf algebra structure is obtained. Its Z$_2$-graded dual Hopf algebra is also given.
We introduce the C++ library Wedge, based on GiNaC, for symbolic computations in differential geometry. We show how Wedge makes it possible to use the language C++ to perform such computations, and illustrate some advantages of this approach with explicit examples. In particular, we describe a short program to determine whether a given linear exterior differential system is involutive.
In the present paper and the companion paper [8] a probabilistic (statistical mechanical) approach to the study of canonical metrics and measures on a complex algebraic variety X is introduced. On any such variety with positive Kodaira dimension a canonical (birationally invariant) random point processes is defined and shown to converge in probability towards a canonical deterministic measure on X, coinciding with the canonical measure of Song-Tian and Tsuji. The proof is based on new large deviation principle for Gibbs measures with singular Hamiltonians which relies on an asymptotic submean …
These are lecture notes of the Summer school on the geometry of differential equations held in Nordfjordeid, Norway in 1996. They cover geometric structures related to scalar second order ODEs, the construction of the associated Cartan connection, techniques for computing invariants of differential equations starting from the Cartan connection, recognition of symmetric 2nd order ODEs by their differential invariants and the constructive aspects of the local equivalence problem.
