We prove that a smooth complex projective threefold with a Kähler metric of negative holomorphic sectional curvature has ample canonical line bundle. In dimensions greater than three, we prove that, under equal assumptions, the nef dimension of the canonical line bundle is maximal. With certain additional assumptions, ampleness is again obtained. The methods used come from both complex differential geometry and complex algebraic geometry.
We generalize a construction of Hitchin to prove that, given any compact Kähler manifold $M$ with positive holomorphic sectional curvature and any holomorphic vector bundle $E$ over $M$, the projectivized vector bundle ${\mathbb P}(E)$ admits a Kähler metric with positive holomorphic sectional curvature.
We show that if a compact complex manifold admits a Kähler metric whose holomorphic sectional curvature is everywhere non positive and strictly negative in at least one point, then its canonical bundle is positive.
The main result of this note is that, for each $n\in \{1,2,3,\ldots\}$, there exists a Hodge metric on the $n$-th Hirzebruch surface whose positive holomorphic sectional curvature is $\frac{1}{(1+2n)^2}$-pinched. The type of metric under consideration was first studied by Hitchin in this context. In order to address the case $n=0$, we prove a general result on the pinching of the holomorphic sectional curvature of the product metric on the product of two Hermitian manifolds $M$ and $N$ of positive holomorphic sectional curvature.
In an earlier work, we investigated some consequences of the existence of a Kähler metric of negative holomorphic sectional curvature on a projective manifold. In the present work, we extend our results to the case of semi-negative (i.e., non-positive) holomorphic sectional curvature. In doing so, we define a new invariant that records the largest codimension of maximal subspaces in the tangent spaces on which the holomorphic sectional curvature vanishes. Using this invariant, we establish lower bounds for the nef dimension and, under certain additional assumptions, for the Kodaira dimension o…
The main result of this note essentially is that if the base and fibers of a compact fibration carry Hermitian metrics of positive holomorphic sectional curvature, then so does the total space of the fibration. The proof is based on the use of a warped product metric as in the work by Cheung in case of negative holomorphic sectional curvature, but differs in certain key aspects, e.g., in that it does not use the subadditivity property for holomorphic sectional curvature due to Grauert-Reckziegel and Wu.
In this paper, we pose several conjectures on structures and images of maximal rationally connected fibrations of smooth projective varieties admitting semi-positive holomorphic sectional curvature. Toward these conjectures, we prove that the canonical bundle of images of such fibrations is not big. Our proof gives a generalization of Yang's solution using RC positivity for Yau's conjecture. As an application, we show that any compact Kähler surface with semi-positive holomorphic sectional curvature is rationally connected, or a complex torus, or a ruled surface over an elliptic curve.
In this paper, with the aim of establishing a structure theorem for a compact Kähler manifold $X$ with semi-positive holomorphic sectional curvature, we study a morphism $ϕ: X \to Y$ to a compact Kähler manifold $Y$ with pseudo-effective canonical bundle. We prove that the morphism $ϕ$ is always smooth (that is, a submersion), the image $Y$ admits a finite etale cover $T \to Y$ by a complex torus $T$, and further that all the fibers are isomorphic when $X$ is projective. Moreover, by applying a modified method to maximal rationally connected fibrations, we show that $X$ is rationally connected…
In this paper, we establish a structure theorem for a smooth projective variety $X$ with semi-positive holomorphic sectional curvature. Our structure theorem contains the solution for Yau's conjecture and it can be regarded as a natural generalization of the structure theorem proved by Howard-Smyth-Wu and Mok for holomorphic bisectional curvature. Specifically, we prove that $X$ admits a locally trivial morphism $ϕ:X \to Y$ such that the fiber $F$ is rationally connected and the image $Y$ has a finite étale cover $A \to Y$ by an abelian variety $A$, by combining the author's previous work with…
In this note, we continue the investigation of a projective Kähler manifold $M$ of semi-negative holomorphic sectional curvature $H$. We introduce a new differential geometric numerical rank invariant which measures the number of linearly independent {\it truly flat} directions of $H$ in the tangent spaces. We prove that this invariant is bounded above by the nef dimension and bounded below by the numerical Kodaira dimension of $M$. We also prove a splitting theorem for $M$ in terms of the nef dimension and, under some additional hypotheses, in terms of the new rank invariant.
Let $(M,ω)$ be a compact Kähler manifold with negative holomorphic sectional curvature. It was proved by Wu-Yau and Tosatti-Yang that $M$ is necessarily projective and has ample canonical bundle. In this paper, we show that any irreducible subvariety of $M$ is of general type. Moreover, we can extend the theorem to the quasi-negative curvature case building on earlier results of Diverio-Trapani. Finally, we investigate the more general setting of a quasi-projective manifold $X^{\circ}$ endowed with a Kähler metric with negative holomorphic sectional curvature and we prove that such a manifold …
In this paper we study holomorphic vector bundles with singular Hermitian metrics whose curvature are Hermitian matrix currents. We obtain an extension theorem for holomorphic jet sections of nef holomorphic vector bundle on compact Kähler manifolds. Using it we prove that Fano manifolds with strong Griffiths nef tangent bundles are rational homogeneous spaces.
The existence problem for holomorphic structures on vector bundles over non-algebraic surfaces is in general still open. We solve this problem in the case of rank 2 vector bundles over K3 surfaces and in the case of vector bundles of arbitrary rank over all known surfaces of class VII. Our methods, which are based on Donaldson theory and deformation theory, can be used to solve the existence problem of holomorphic vector bundles on further classes of non-algebraic surfaces.
We construct an irreducible holomorphic connection with SL(2,R)-monodromy on the trivial holomorphic vector bundle of rank two over a compact Riemann surface. This answers a question of Calsamiglia, Deroin, Heu and Loray in \cite{CDHL}.
We establish the equidistribution of zeros of random holomorphic sections of powers of a semipositive singular Hermitian line bundle, with an estimate of the convergence speed.
Let X be a compact connected Kaehler manifold such that the holomorphic tangent bundle TX is numerically effective. A theorem of Demailly, Peternell and Schenider says that there is a finite unramified Galois covering M --> X, a complex torus T, and a holomorphic surjective submersion f: M --> T, such that the fibers of f are Fano manifolds with numerically effective tangent bundle. A conjecture of Campana and Peternell says that the fibers of f are rational and homogeneous. Assume that X admits a holomorphic Cartan geometry. We prove that the fibers of f are rational homogeneous varieties. We…
Given a compact complex manifold $M$, we investigate the holomorphic vector bundles $E$ on $M$ such that $φ^* E$ is trivial for some surjective holomorphic map $φ$, to $M$, from some compact complex manifold. We prove that these are exactly those holomorphic vector bundles that admit a flat holomorphic connection with finite monodromy homomorphism. A similar result is proved for holomorphic principal $G$-bundles, where $G$ is a connected reductive complex affine algebraic group.
Let $M$ be an irreducible smooth complex projective variety equipped with an action of a compact Lie group $G$, and let $({\mathcal L},h)$ be a $G$-equivariant holomorphic Hermitian line bundle on $M$. Given a compact connected Riemann surface $X$, we construct a $G$-equivariant holomorphic Hermitian line bundle $(L\,,H)$ on $X\times M$ (the action of $G$ on $X$ is trivial), such that the corresponding Quillen determinant line bundle $({\mathcal Q}, h_Q)$, which is a $G$--equivariant holomorphic Hermitian line bundle on $M$, is isomorphic to the given $G$--equivariant holomorphic Hermitian lin…
We prove the Hodge symmetry type result on the Dolbeault cohomology of Oeljeklaus-Toma manifolds with values in the direct sum of holomorphic line bundles. Consequently, we show the vanishing and non-vanishing of Dolbeault cohomology of Oeljeklaus-Toma manifolds with values in holomorphic line bundles.
In this note we show that if a projective manifold admits a Kähler metric with negative holomorphic sectional curvature then the canonical bundle of the manifold is ample. This confirms a conjecture of the second author.
We prove that actions of complex reductive Lie groups on a holomorphic vector bundle over a complex compact manifold are locally extendable to its local moduli space.
It is in general unknown which topological complex vector bundles on a non-algebraic surface admit holomorphic structures. We solve this problem for primary Kodaira surfaces by using results of Kani on curves of genus two with elliptic differentials. Some of the corresponding moduli spaces will be smooth compact and holomorphically symplectic.
Chern number formulas for holomorphic jet bundles are computed for projective curves and for projective surfaces. These formulas are used to show that certain minimal surfaces of general type (generic hypersurfaces of degree at least 5 in projective 3-spaces in particular) are hyperbolic in the sense of complex hyperbolic geometry.
We prove an extension theorem for roots and logarithms of holomorphic line bundles across strictly pseudoconcave boundaries: they extend in all cases except one, when dimension and Morse index of a critical point is two. In that case we give an explicit description of obstructions to the extension.
The existence problem for vector bundles on a smooth compact complex surface consists in determining which topological complex vector bundles admit holomorphic structures. For projective surfaces, Schwarzenberger proved that a topological complex vector bundle admits a holomorphic (algebraic) structure if and only if its first Chern class belongs to the Neron-Severi group of the surface. In contrast, for non-projective surfaces there is only a necessary condition for the existence problem (the discriminant of the vector bundles must be positive) and the difficulty of the problem resides in the…
In the previous paper \cite{Goto_2017}, the notion of an Einstein-Hermitian metric of a generalized holomorphic vector bundle over a generalized Kahler manifold of symplectic type was introduced from the moment map framework. In this paper we establish a Kobayashi-Hitchin correspondence, that is, the equivalence of the existence of an Einstein-Hermitian metric and $ψ$-polystability of a generalized holomorphic vector bundle over a compact generalized Kahler manifold of symplectic type. Poisson modules provide intriguing generalized holomorphic vector bundles and we obtain $ψ$-stable Poisson mo…
In this Note we establish a relation between sections in globally generated holomorphic vector bundles on Kähler manifolds, isotropic with respect to a non-degenerate quadratic form, and totally geodesic foliations on Euclidean open domains. We find a geometric condition for a totally geodesic foliation to originate in a holomorphic vector bundle. For codimension-two foliations, this description recovers of P. Baird and J. C. Wood. The universal objects that play a key role are the orthogonal Grassmannians.
In this paper we provide sufficient conditions for maps of vector bundles on smooth projective varieties to be uniquely determined by their degeneracy schemes. We then specialize to holomorphic distributions and foliations. In particular, we provide sufficient conditions for distributions of arbitrary rank on projective spaces to be uniquely determined by their singular schemes.
Motivated by the Green-Griffiths conjecture, we study maximal rank holomorphic maps from $\C^p$ into complex manifolds. When $p>1$ such maps should in principle be more tractable than entire curves. We extend to this setting the jet-bundles techniques introduced by Semple, Green-Griffiths and Demailly. Our main application is the non-existence of maximal rank holomorphic maps from $\C^2$ into the very general degree $d$ hypersurface in $\bP^4$, as soon as $d\geq 93.$
These notes are based on a series of five lectures given at the 2009 Villa de Leyva Summer School on Geometric and Topological Methods for Quantum Field Theory. The purpose of the lectures was to give an introduction to differential-geometric methods in the study of holomorphic vector bundles on a compact connected Riemann surface.
We study anti-holomorphic involutions of the moduli space of principal $G$-Higgs bundles over a compact Riemann surface $X$, where $G$ is a complex semisimple Lie group. These involutions are defined by fixing anti-holomorphic involutions on both $X$ and $G$. We analyze the fixed point locus in the moduli space and their relation with representations of the orbifold fundamental group of $X$ equipped with the anti-holomorphic involution. We also study the relation with branes. This generalizes work by Biswas--Garc\'ıa-Prada--Hurtubise and Baraglia--Schaposnik.
In this paper, we introduce the notions of $α$-Hermitian-Einstein metric and $α$-stability for $I_\pm$-holomorphic vector bundles on bi-Hermitian manifolds. Moreover, we establish a Kobayashi-Hitchin correspondence for $I_\pm$-holomorphic vector bundles on bi-Hermitian manifolds. Examples of such vector bundles include generalized holomorphic bundles on generalized Kähler manifolds. We also show that $α$-stability of a vector bundle, in this sense, can depend on the parameter $α$.
We examine the moduli of framed holomorphic bundles over the blowup of a complex surface, by studying a filtration induced by the behavior of the bundles on a neighborhood of the exceptional divisor.
We investigate the symplectic geometric and differential geometric aspects of the moduli space of connections on a compact Riemann surface $X$. Fix a theta characteristic $K^{1/2}_X$ on $X$; it defines a theta divisor on the moduli space ${\mathcal M}$ of stable vector bundles on $X$ of rank $r$ degree zero. Given a vector bundle $E \in {\mathcal M}$ lying outside the theta divisor, we construct a natural holomorphic connection on $E$ that depends holomorphically on $E$. Using this holomorphic connection, we construct a canonical holomorphic isomorphism between the following two: \begin{enumer…
We prove that every holomorphic vector bundle on a noncommutative two-torus $T$ can be obtained by successive extensions from standard holomorphic bundles considered in math.QA/0211262. This implies that the category of holomorphic bundles on $T$ is equivalent to the heart of certain $t$-structure on the derived category of coherent sheaves on an elliptic curve.
We study infinitesimal deformations of autodual and hyper-holomorphic connections on complex vector bundles on hyper-Kähler manifolds of arbitrary dimension. In particular, we describe the DG Lie algebra controlling this deformation problem. Moreover, we prove associative formality for derived endomorphisms of a holomorphic vector bundle admitting a projectively hyper-holomorphic connection.
In this paper, we prove that the Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch formula in Deligne cohomology computing the determinant of the cohomology of a holomorphic vector bundle on the fibers of a proper submersion between abstract complex manifolds is invariant by deformation of the bundle.
In this work we study the topology of holomorphic rank two bundles over complex surfaces. We consider bundles that are constructed by glueing and show that under certain conditions the topology of the bundle does not depend on the glueing. We present a simple classification of bundles on blown-up surfaces.
We study moduli of holomorphic vector bundles on non-compact varieties. We discuss filtrability and algebraicity of bundles and calculate dimensions of local moduli. As particularly interesting examples, we describe numerical invariants of bundles on some local Calabi-Yau threefolds.
We show that any complex manifold that has a divisor whose normalization has non-zero first Betti number either has a non-trivial holomorphic gerbe which does not trivialize meromorphicly or a meromorphic line bundle not equivalent to any holomorphic line bundle. Similarly, higher Betti numbers of divisors correspond to higher gerbes or meromorphic gerbes. We give several new examples.
We give a comparative description of the Poisson structures on the moduli spaces of flat connections on real surfaces and holomorphic Poisson structures on the moduli spaces of holomorphic bundles on complex surfaces. The symplectic leaves of the latter are classified by restrictions of the bundles to certain divisors. This can be regarded as fixing a "complex analogue of the holonomy" of a connection along a "complex analogue of the boundary" in analogy with the real case.
We introduce the notion of Atiyah class of a generalized holomorphic vector bundle, which captures the obstruction to the existence of generalized holomorphic connections on the bundle. As in the classical holomorphic case, this Atiyah class can be defined in three different ways: using Čech cohomology, using the first-jet short exact sequence, or adopting the Lie pair point of view.
In this paper, the first of a series of three, we classify holomorphic principal G-bundles over an elliptic curve, where G is a reductive group. We also study the local and global properties of the moduli space of semistable G-bundles. We identify canonical representatives for each S-equivalence class of semistable G-bundles, and study their automorphism groups.
Let $M$ be a compact connected Kähler manifold and let ${\E}_{l-1}$ be the smallest term in the Harder-Narasimhan filtration of its tangent bundle. Let $G$ be an affine algebraic reductive group over $\C$. We prove the following result: If $M$ satisfies the condition that $°(T/{\E}_{l-1}) \geq 0$, then a holomorphic principal $G$-bundle $P$ on $M$ admitting a compatible holomorphic connection is semistable. Moreover, if $°(T/{\E}_{l-1}) >0$, then such a bundle $P$ actually admits a compatible flat $G$-connection.
