Given a compact complex manifold $M$, we investigate the holomorphic vector bundles $E$ on $M$ such that $φ^* E$ is trivial for some surjective holomorphic map $φ$, to $M$, from some compact complex manifold. We prove that these are exactly those holomorphic vector bundles that admit a flat holomorphic connection with finite monodromy homomorphism. A similar result is proved for holomorphic principal $G$-bundles, where $G$ is a connected reductive complex affine algebraic group.
A vector bundle $E$ over a projective variety $M$ is called finite if it satisfies a nontrivial polynomial equation with nonnegative integral coefficients. Introducing finite bundles, Nori proved that $E$ is finite if and only if the pullback of $E$ to some finite étale covering of $M$ is trivializable \cite{No1}. The definition of finite bundles extends naturally to holomorphic vector bundles over compact complex manifolds. We prove that a holomorphic vector bundle over a compact complex manifold $M$ is finite if and only if the pullback of $E$ to some finite étale covering of $M$ is holomorp…
We prove that the space of surjective holomorphic maps from a compact complex manifold to a compact Kähler manifold with trivial canonical class and finite fundamental group is discrete.
A classical result in complex geometry says that the automorphism group of a manifold of general type is discrete. It is more generally true that there are only finitely many surjective morphisms between two fixed projective manifolds of general type. Rigidity of surjective morphisms, and the failure of a morphism to be rigid have been studied by a number of authors in the past. The main result of this paper states that surjective morphisms are always rigid, unless there is a clear geometric reason for it. More precisely, we can say the following. First, deformations of surjective morphisms be…
We consider the $\partial\bar{\partial}$-lemma for complex manifolds under surjective holomorphic maps. Furthermore, using Deligne-Griffiths-Morgan-Sullivan's theorem, we prove that a product compact complex manifold satisfies the $\partial\bar{\partial}$-lemma if and only if so do all its components.
Let $X$ and $Y$ be compact connected complex manifolds of the same dimension with $b_2(X)= b_2(Y)$. We prove that any surjective holomorphic map of degree one from $X$ to $Y$ is a biholomorphism. A version of this was established by the first two authors, but under an extra assumption that $\dim H^1(X {\mathcal O}_X)\,=\,\dim H^1(Y {\mathcal O}_Y)$. We show that this condition is actually automatically satisfied.
The paper studies the deformation theory of a holomorphic surjective map from a normal compact complex space to a compact Kaehler manifold and describes the component of the space of holomorphic maps, generalizing results in the projective case by Kebekus and the authors.
Answering a problem raised by Lazarsfeld, Hwang and Mok proved that a surjective holomorphic map from a rational homogeneous space of Picard number 1 onto projective manifold different from projective space must be a biholomorphism. THe aim of this paper is to generalized this result to irreducible rational homogeneous space of higher Picard number.
We show that deformations of a surjective morphism onto a Fano manifold of Picard number 1 are unobstructed and rigid modulo the automorphisms of the target, if the variety of minimal rational tangents of the Fano manifold is non-linear or finite. The condition on the variety of minimal rational tangents holds for practically all known examples of Fano manifolds of Picard number 1, except the projective space. When the variety of minimal rational tangents is non-linear, the proof is based on an earlier result of N. Mok and the author on the birationality of the tangent map. When the varieties …
Let X be a compact connected Kaehler manifold such that the holomorphic tangent bundle TX is numerically effective. A theorem of Demailly, Peternell and Schenider says that there is a finite unramified Galois covering M --> X, a complex torus T, and a holomorphic surjective submersion f: M --> T, such that the fibers of f are Fano manifolds with numerically effective tangent bundle. A conjecture of Campana and Peternell says that the fibers of f are rational and homogeneous. Assume that X admits a holomorphic Cartan geometry. We prove that the fibers of f are rational homogeneous varieties. We…
Effective bounds for the finite number of surjective holomorphic maps between canonically polarized compact complex manifolds of any dimension with fixed domain are proven. Both the case of a fixed target and the case of varying targets are treated. In the case of varying targets, bounds on the complexity of Chow varieties are used.
A compact Kähler manifold is shown to be simply-connected if its `symmetric cotangent algebra' is trivial. Conjecturally, such a manifold should even be rationally connected. The relative version is also shown: a proper surjective connected holomorphic map between connected complex manifolds induces an isomorphism of fundamental groups if its smooth fibres are as above, and if the domain is Kähler.
In this article we prove first of all the nonexistence of holomorphic submersions other than covering maps between compact quotients of complex unit balls, with a proof that works equally well in a more general equivariant setting. For a non-equidimensional surjective holomorphic map between compact ball quotients, our method applies to show that the set of critical values must be nonempty and of codimension 1. In the equivariant setting the line of arguments extend to holomorphic mappings of maximal rank into the complex projective space or the complex Euclidean space, yielding in the latter …
For proper surjective holomorphic maps from K"ahler manifolds to analytic spaces, we give a decomposition theorem for the cohomology groups of the canonical bundle twisted by Nakano semi-positive vector bundles by means of the higher direct image sheaves, by using the theory of harmonic integrals developed by Takegoshi. As an application, we prove a vanishing theorem of Koll'ar-Ohsawa type by combining the L^2-method for the dbar-equation.
Given a projective irreducible symplectic manifold $M$ of dimension $2n$, a projective manifold $X$ and a surjective holomorphic map $f:M \to X$ with connected fibers of positive dimension, we prove that $X$ is biholomorphic to the projective space of dimension $n$. The proof is obtained by exploiting two geometric structures at general points of $X$: the affine structure arising from the action variables of the Lagrangian fibration $f$ and the structure defined by the variety of minimal rational tangents on the Fano manifold $X$.
We show that if a compact Kahler manifold X admits a cohomologically hyperbolic surjective endomorphism then its Kodaira dimension is non-positive. This gives an affirmative answer to a conjecture of Guedj in the holomorphic case. The main part of the paper is to determine the geometric structure and the fundamental groups (up to finite index) for those X of dimension 3.
Let f : X --> Y be a holomorphic map of complex manifolds, which is proper, Kahler, and surjective with connected fibers, and which is smooth over Y-Z the complement of an analytic subset Z. Let E be a Nakano semi-positive vector bundle on X, and consider direct image sheaves F = R^qf_*(K_{X/Y} \otimes E) for q \geq 0. In our previous paper, we discussed the Nakano semi-positivity of F with respect to the so-called Hodge metric, when the map f is smooth. In this paper, we discuss the extension of the induced metric on the tautological line bundle O(1) on the projective space bundle P(F) ``over…
Given a smooth complex projective variety $M$ and a smooth closed curve $X \subset M$ such that the homomorphism of fundamental groups $π_1(X) \rightarrow π_1(M)$ is surjective, we study the restriction map of Higgs bundles, namely from Higgs bundles on $M$ to those on $X$. In particular, we investigate the interplay between this restriction map and various types of branes contained in the moduli spaces of Higgs bundles on $M$ and $X$. We also consider the set-up where a finite group is acting on $M$ via holomorphic automorphisms or anti-holomorphic involutions, and the curve $X$ is preserved …
Let $X$ be a smooth compact complex surface subject to the following conditions: (i) the canonical line bundle $\mathcal{O}_X(K_X) $ is very ample, (ii) the irregularity $q(X): = h^1(\mathcal{O}_X) =0$, (iii) $X$ contains no rational normal curves of degree $\leq (p_g-1)$, (iv) the multiplication map $m_2: Sym^2(H^0(\mathcal{O}_X(K_X))) \longrightarrow H^0 (\mathcal{O}_X (2K_X))$ is surjective. It is shown that the Infinitesimal Torelli holds for such $X$. Our proof is based on the study of the cup-product $$ H^1 (Θ_X) \longrightarrow (\mathcal{O}_X(K_X))^{\ast} \otimes H^1 (Ω_X) $$ where $Θ_X…
