In the 3-dimensional Riemannian geometry, contact structures equipped with an adapted Riemannian metric are divergence-free, nondegenerate eigenforms of the Laplace-Beltrami operator. We trace out a 2-d analogue of this fact: there is a close relationship between the topology of the contact structure on a convex surface in the 3-manifold (the dividing curves) and the nodal curves of Laplacian eigenfunctions on that surface. Motivated by this relationship, we consider a topological version of Payne's conjecture for the free membrane problem. We construct counterexamples to Payne's conjecture for closed Riemannian surfaces. In light of the correspondence between the nodal lines and dividing curves, we interpret Payne's conjecture in terms of the tight versus overtwisted dichotomy for contact structures.
We give upper and lower bounds on the volume of a tubular neighborhood of the nodal set of an eigenfunction of the Laplacian on a real analytic closed Riemannian manifold M. As an application we consider the question of approximating points on M by nodal sets, and explore analogy with approximation by rational numbers.
In this paper, we revisit the analyses of Antonie Stern (1925) and Hans Lewy (1977) devoted to the construction of spherical harmonics with two or three nodal domains. Our method yields sharp quantitative results and a better understanding of the occurrence of bifurcations in the families of nodal sets. This paper is a natural continuation of our critical reading of A. Stern's results for Dirichlet eigenfunctions in the square, see arXiv:14026054.
Let X be a manifold equipped with a complete Riemannian metric of constant negative curvature and finite volume. We demonstrate the finiteness of the collection of totally geodesic immersed hypersurfaces in X that lie in the zero-level set of some Laplace eigenfunction. For surfaces, we show that the number can be bounded just in terms of the area of the surface. We also provide constructions of geodesics in hyperbolic surfaces that lie in a nodal set but that do not lie in the fixed point set of a reflection symmetry.
In this paper, we study conformal invariants that arise from nodal sets and negative eigenvalues of conformally covariant operators on manifolds with boundary. We also consider applications to curvature prescription problems on manifolds with boundary. We relate Dirichlet and Neumann eigenvalues and put the results developed here for the Escobar problem into the more general framework of boundary operators of arbitrary order.
We use the Dong-Sogge-Zelditch formula to obtain a lower bound for the volume of the nodal sets of eigenfunctions. Our result improves the recent results of Sogge-Zelditch and in dimensions n \leq 5 gives a new proof for the lower bounds of Colding-Minicozzi.
Recently, Sogge-Zelditch and Colding-Minicozzi gave new power law lower bounds on the size of the nodal sets of eigenfunctions. The purpose of this short note is to point out a third method to obtain a power law lower bound on the volume of the nodal sets. Our method is based on the Donnelly-Fefferman growth bound for eigenfunctions and a growth vs. volume relation we proved in a previous work.
We find new polynomial upper bounds for the size of nodal sets of eigenfunctions when the Riemannian manifold has a Gevrey or quasianalytic regularity.
In this paper, we study conformal invariants that arise from nodal sets and negative eigenvalues of conformally covariant operators; more specifically, the GJMS operators, which include the Yamabe and Paneitz operators. We give several applications to curvature prescription problems. We establish a version in conformal geometry of Courant's Nodal Domain Theorem. We also show that on any manifold of dimension $n\geq 3$, there exist many metrics for which our invariants are nontrivial. We prove that the Yamabe operator can have an arbitrarily large number of negative eigenvalues on any manifold …
In this note, we consider a fixed vector field $V$ on $S^2$ and study the distribution of points which lie on the nodal set (of a random spherical harmonic) where $V$ is also tangent. We show that the expected value of the corresponding counting function is asymptotic to the eigenvalue with a leading coefficient that is independent of the vector field $V$. This demonstrates, in some form, a universality for vector fields up to lower order terms.
We prove a natural inequality which implies the known lower bounds for the $(n-1)$-dimensional Hausdorff measure of nodal sets for smooth compact manifolds.
Let $Ω$ be a bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^n$ with $C^{1}$ boundary and let $u_λ$ be a Dirichlet Laplace eigenfunction in $Ω$ with eigenvalue $λ$. We show that the $(n-1)$-dimensional Hausdorff measure of the zero set of $u_λ$ does not exceed $C(Ω)\sqrtλ$. This result is new even for the case of domains with $C^\infty$-smooth boundary.
Let a torus $T$ act freely on a closed manifold $M$ of dimension at least two. We demonstrate that, for a generic $T$-invariant Riemannian metric $g$ on $M$, each real $Δ_g$-eigenspace is an irreducible real representation of $T$ and, therefore, has dimension at most two. We also show that, for the generic $T$-invariant metric on $M$, if $u$ is a non-invariant real-valued $Δ_g$-eigenfunction that vanishes on some $T$-orbit, then the nodal set of $u$ is a connected smooth hypersurface whose complement has exactly two connected components.
We use layer potential to establish that the boundary biharmonic Steklov operators are elliptic pseudo-differential operators. Thus we are able to establish lower bounds on both the measure of boundary nodal sets and interior nodal sets for biharmonic Steklov eigenfunctions.
We show that, in round spheres of dimension $n\geq3$, for any given collection of codimension 2 smooth submanifolds $\mathfrak{S}:=\{Σ_1,...,Σ_N\}$ of arbitrarily complicated topology ($N$ being the complex dimension of the spinor bundle), there is always an eigenfunction $ψ=(ψ_1,...,ψ_N)$ of the Dirac operator such that each submanifold $Σ_a$, modulo ambient diffeomorphism, is a structurally stable nodal set of the spinor component $ψ_a$. The result holds for any choice of trivialization of the spinor bundle. The emergence of these structures takes place at small scales and sufficiently high …
We study the asymptotic properties of the conormal cycle of nodal sets associated to a random superposition of eigenfunctions of the Laplacian on a smooth compact Riemannian manifold without boundary. In the case where the dimension is odd, we show that the expectation of the corresponding current of integration equidistributes on the fibers of the cotangent bundle. In the case where the dimension is even, we obtain an upper bound of lower order on the expectation. Using recent results of Alesker, we also deduce some properties on the asymptotic expectation of any smooth valuation including th…
We investigate nodal sets of magnetic Schroedinger operators with zero magnetic field, acting on a non simply connected domain in $\r^2$. For the case of circulation 1/2 of the magnetic vector potential around each hole in the region, we obtain a charactisation of the nodal set, and use this to obtain bounds on the multiplicity of the groundstate. For the case of one hole and a fixed electric potential, we show that the first eigenvalue takes its highest value for circulation 1/2.
The goal of this article is to draw new applications of small scale quantum ergodicity in nodal sets of eigenfunctions. We show that if quantum ergodicity holds on balls of shrinking radius $r(λ) \to 0$, then one can achieve improvements on the recent upper bounds of Logunov and Logunov-Malinnikova on the size of nodal sets, according to a certain power of $r(λ)$. We also show that the order of vanishing results of Donnelly-Fefferman and Dong can be improved. Since by the results of Han and Hezari-Rivière small scale QE holds on negatively curved manifolds at logarithmically shrinking rates, w…
In this paper we consider the problem of prescribing the nodal set of low-energy eigenfunctions of the Laplacian. Our main result is that, given any separating closed hypersurface Σin a compact n-manifold M, there is a Riemannian metric on M such that the nodal set of its first nontrivial eigenfunction is Σ. We present a number of variations on this result, which enable us to show, in particular, that the first nontrivial eigenfunction can have as many non-degenerate critical points as one wishes.
This paper is concerned with the location of nodal sets of eigenfunctions of the Dirichlet Laplacian in thin tubular neighbourhoods of hypersurfaces of the Euclidean space of arbitrary dimension. In the limit when the radius of the neighbourhood tends to zero, it is known that spectral properties of the Laplacian are approximated well by an effective Schrödinger operator on the hypersurface with a potential expressed solely in terms of principal curvatures. By applying techniques of elliptic partial differential equations, we strengthen the known perturbation results to get a convergence of ei…
We show that on a compact Riemmanian manifold $(M,g)$, nodal sets of linear combinations of any $p+1$ smooth functions form an admissible $p-$sweepout provided these linear combinations have uniformly bounded vanishing order. This applies in particular to finite linear combinations of Laplace eigenfunctions. As a result, we obtain a new proof of the Gromov, Guth, Marques--Neves upper bounds on the min-max $p$-widths of $M.$ We also prove that close to a point at which a smooth function on $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ vanishes to order $k$, its nodal set is contained in the union of $k$ $W^{1,p}$ graphs …
Let $Σ$ be an oriented compact hypersurface in the round sphere $\mathbb{S}^n$ or in the flat torus $\mathbb{T}^n$, $n\geq 3$. In the case of the torus, $Σ$ is further assumed to be contained in a contractible subset of $\mathbb{T}^n$. We show that for any sufficiently large enough odd integer $N$ there exists an eigenfunctions $ψ$ of the Laplacian on $\mathbb{S}^n$ or $\mathbb{T}^n$ satisfying $Δψ=-λψ$ (with $λ=N(N+n-1)$ or $N^2$ on $\mathbb{S}^n$ or $\mathbb{T}^n$, respectively), and with a connected component of the nodal set of $ψ$ given by~$Σ$, up to an ambient diffeomorphism.
Let $\mathbb{M}$ be a compact $C^\infty$-smooth Riemannian manifold of dimension $n$, $n\geq 3$, and let $φ_λ: Δ_M φ_λ+ λφ_λ= 0$ denote the Laplace eigenfunction on $\mathbb{M}$ corresponding to the eigenvalue $λ$. We show that $$H^{n-1}(\{ φ_λ=0\}) \leq C λ^α,$$ where $α>1/2$ is a constant, which depends on $n$ only, and $C>0$ depends on $\mathbb{M}$ . This result is a consequence of our study of zero sets of harmonic functions on $C^\infty$-smooth Riemannian manifolds. We develop a technique of propagation of smallness for solutions of elliptic PDE that allows us to obtain local bounds from …
We prove that the nodal set (zero set) of a solution of a generalized Dirac equation on a Riemannian manifold has codimension 2 at least. If the underlying manifold is a surface, then the nodal set is discrete. We obtain a quick proof of the fact that the nodal set of an eigenfunction for the Laplace-Beltrami operator on a Riemannian manifold consists of a smooth hypersurface and a singular set of lower dimension. We also see that the nodal set of a $Δ$-harmonic differential form on a closed manifold has codimension 2 at least; a fact which is not true if the manifold is not closed. Examples s…
Let $Δ_M$ be the Laplace operator on a compact $n$-dimensional Riemannian manifold without boundary. We study the zero sets of its eigenfunctions $u:Δu + λu =0$. In dimension $n=2$ we refine the Donnelly-Fefferman estimate by showing that $H^1(\{u=0 \})\le Cλ^{3/4-β}$, $β\in (0,1/4)$. The proof employs the Donnelli-Fefferman estimate and a combinatorial argument, which also gives a lower (non-sharp) bound in dimension $n=3$: $H^2(\{u=0\})\ge cλ^α$, $α\in (0,1/2)$. The positive constants $c,C$ depend on the manifold, $α$ and $β$ are universal.
Given a Laplace eigenfunction on a surface, we study the distribution of its extrema on the nodal domains. It is classically known that the absolute value of the eigenfunction is asymptotically bounded by the 4-th root of the eigenvalue. It turns out that the number of nodal domains where the eigenfunction has an extremum of such order, remains bounded as the eigenvalue tends to infinity. We also observe that certain restrictions on the distribution of nodal extrema and a version of the Courant nodal domain theorem are valid for a rather wide class of functions on surfaces. These restrictions …
It is proved that if a Paley-Wiener family of eigenfunctions of the Laplace operator in $\mathbb R^3$ vanishes on a real analytically ruled two-dimensional surface $S \subset \mathbb R^3$ then $S$ is a union of cones, each of which is contained in a translate of the zero set of a nonzero harmonic homogeneous polynomial. If $S$ is an immersed $C^1-$ manifold then $S$ is a Coxeter system of planes. Full description of common nodal sets of the Laplace spectra of convexly supported distributions is given. In equivalent terms, the result describes ruled injectivity sets for the spherical mean trans…
Let $ Ω\subset R^2$ be a bounded piecewise smooth domain and $ϕ_λ$ be a Neumann (or Dirichlet) eigenfunction with eigenvalue $λ^2$ and nodal set ${ N}_{ϕ_λ} = {x \in Ω; ϕ_λ(x) = 0}.$ Let $H \subset Ω$ be an interior $C^ω$ curve. Consider the intersection number $$ n(λ,H):= \# (H \cap N_{ϕ_λ} ).$$ We first prove that for general piecewise-analytic domains, and under an appropriate "goodness" condition on $H$, $$ n(λ,H) = {\mathcal O}_H(λ) (*)$$ as $λ\rightarrow \infty.$ We then prove that the bound in $(*)$ is satisfied in the case of quantum ergodic (QE) sequences of interior eigenfunctions, p…
We obtain the sharp version of the uncertainty principle recently introduced in [47], and improved by [13], relating the size of the zero set of a continuous function having zero mean and the optimal transport cost between the mass of the positive part and the negative one. The result is actually valid for the wide family of metric measure spaces verifying a synthetic lower bound on the Ricci curvature, namely the MCP(K,N) or CD(K,N) condition, thus also extending the scope beyond the smooth setting of Riemannian manifolds. Applying the uncertainty principle to eigenfunctions of the Laplacian …
Let $u$ be a harmonic function in the unit ball $B(0,1) \subset \mathbb{R}^n$, $n \geq 3$, such that $u(0)=0$. Nadirashvili conjectured that there exists a positive constant $c$, depending on the dimension $n$ only, such that $H^{n-1}(\{u=0 \}\cap B) \geq c$. We prove Nadirashvili's conjecture as well as its counterpart on $C^\infty$-smooth Riemannian manifolds. The latter yields the lower bound in Yau's conjecture. Namely, we show that for any compact $C^\infty$-smooth Riemannian manifold $M$ (without boundary) of dimension $n$ there exists $c>0$ such that for any Laplace eigenfunction $φ_λ$ …
We study the nodal sets of non-degenerate eigenfunctions of the Laplacian on fibre bundles $π{:}\, M\to B$ in the adiabatic limit. This limit consists in considering a family $G_\varepsilon$ of Riemannian metrics, that are close to Riemannian submersions, for which the ratio of the diameter of the fibres to that of the base is given by $\varepsilon \ll 1$. We assume $M$ to be compact and allow for fibres $F$ with boundary, under the condition that the ground state eigenvalue of the Dirichlet-Laplacian on $F_x$ is independent of the base point. We prove for $\mathrm{dim} B \leq 3$ that the noda…
We extend a result of the second author \cite[Theorem 1.1]{soggekaknik} to dimensions $d \geq 3$ which relates the size of $L^p$-norms of eigenfunctions for $2<p<\frac{2(d+1)}{d-1}$ to the amount of $L^2$-mass in shrinking tubes about unit-length geodesics. The proof uses bilinear oscillatory integral estimates of Lee \cite{leebilinear} and a variable coefficient variant of an "$\veps$ removal lemma" of Tao and Vargas \cite{tv1}. We also use Hörmander's \cite{HorOsc} $L^2$ oscillatory integral theorem and the Cartan-Hadamard theorem to show that, under the assumption of nonpositive curvature, …
We report on new numerical computations of the set of self-contacts in tightly knotted tubes of uniform circular cross-section. Such contact sets have been obtained before for the trefoil and figure eight knots by simulated annealing -- we use constrained gradient-descent to provide new self-contact sets for those and 48 other knot and link types. The minimum length of all unit diameter tubes in a given knot or link type is called the ropelength of that class of curves. Our computations yield improved upper bounds for the ropelength of all knots and links with 9 or fewer crossings except the t…
We prove a geodesic distance formula for quasi-psh functions with finite entropy, extending results by Chen and Darvas. We work with big and nef cohomology classes: a key result we establish is the convexity of the $K$-energy in this general setting. We then study Monge-Ampère measures on contact sets, generalizing a recent result by the first author and Trapani.
