The authors study smooth lines on projective planes over the algebra C of complex numbers, the algebra C^1 of double numbers, and the algebra C^0 of dual numbers. In the space RP^5, to these smooth lines there correspond families of straight lines describing point three-dimensional tangentially degenerate submanifolds X^3 of rank 2. The authors study focal properties of these submanifolds and prove that they represent examples of different types of tangentially degenerate submanifolds. Namely, the submanifold X^3, corresponding in RP^5 to a smooth line γof the projective plane C, does not have real singular points, the submanifold X^3, corresponding in RP^5 to a smooth line γof the projective plane C^1 P^2, bears two plane singular lines, and finally the submanifold X^3, corresponding in RP^5 to a smooth line γof the projective plane C^0 P^2, bears one singular line.
We use reduced homogeneous coordinates to study Riemannian geometry of the octonionic (or Cayley) projective plane. Our method extends to the para-octonionic (or split octonionic) projective plane, the octonionic projective plane of indefinite signature, and the hyperbolic dual of the octonionic projective plane; we discuss these manifolds in the later sections of the paper.
Using symplectic topology and the Radon transform, we prove that smooth 4-dimensional projective planes are diffeomorphic to $\mathbb{CP}^2$. We define the notion of a plane curve in a smooth projective plane, show that plane curves in high dimensional regular planes are lines, prove that homeomorphisms preserving plane curves are smooth collineations, and prove a variety of results analogous to the theory of classical projective planes.
In this paper, we introduce the weighted projective Ricci curvature as an extension of projective Ricci curvature introduced by Z. Shen. We characterize the class of Randers metrics of weighted projective Ricci flat curvature. We find the necessary and sufficient condition under which a Kropina metric has weighted projective Ricci flat curvature. Finally, we show that every projectively flat metric with isotropic weighted projective Ricci and isotropic S-curvature is a Kropina metric or Randers metric.
Here, a non-linear analysis method is applied rather than classical one to study projective Finsler geometry. More intuitively, by means of an inequality on Ricci-Finsler curvature, a projectively invariant pseudo-distance is introduced and an analogous of Schwarz' lemma in Finsler geometry is proved. Next, the Schwarz' lemma is applied to show that the introduced pseudo-distance is a distance. This projectively invariant distance will be served in continuation of this work to investigate Einstein-Finsler spaces and classify Finsler spaces as well.
We prove that there is a correspondence between projective structures defined by torsion-free connections with skew-symmetric Ricci tensor and Veronese webs on a plane. The correspondence is used to characterise the projective structures in terms of second order ODEs.
We develop in detail the theory of c-projective geometry, a natural analogue of projective differential geometry adapted to complex manifolds. We realise it as a type of parabolic geometry and describe the associated Cartan or tractor connection. A Kaehler manifold gives rise to a c-projective structure and this is one of the primary motivations for its study. The existence of two or more Kaehler metrics underlying a given c-projective structure has many ramifications, which we explore in depth. As a consequence of this analysis, we prove the Yano-Obata conjecture for complete Kaehler manifold…
We propose a twistor construction of surfaces in Lie sphere geometry based on the linear system which copies equations of Wilczynski's projective frame. In the particular case of Lie-applicable surfaces this linear system describes joint eigenfunctions of a pair of commuting Schrödinger operators with magnetic fields.
We determine non-Hopf hypersurfaces with constant mean curvature in the complex projective plane which attain equality in a basic inequality between the maximum Ricci curvature and the squared mean curvature.
Some of the most important classes of surfaces in projective 3-space are reviewed: these are isothermally asymptotic surfaces, projectively applicable surfaces, surfaces of Jonas, projectively minimal surfaces, etc. It is demonstrated that the corresponding projective "Gauss-Codazzi" equations reduce to integrable systems which are quite familiar from the modern soliton theory and coincide with the stationary flows in the Davey-Stewartson and Kadomtsev-Petviashvili hierarchies, equations of the Toda lattice, etc. The corresponding Lax pairs can be obtained by inserting a spectral parameter in …
Here, a non-linear analysis method is applied rather than classical one to study projective changes of Finsler metrics. More intuitively, a projectively invariant pseudo-distance is introduced and characterized with respect to the Ricci tensor and its covariant derivatives.
The paper concerns discrete versions of the three well-known results of projective differential geometry: the four vertex theorem, the six affine vertex theorem and the Ghys theorem on four zeroes of the Schwarzian derivative. We study geometry of closed polygonal lines in $\bbRP^d$ and prove that polygons satisfying a certain convexity condition have at least d+1 flattenings. This result provides a new approach to the above mentioned classical theorems.
A Liouville classification of a natural Hamiltonian system on the projective plane with a rotation metric and a linear integral is obtained. All Fomenko--Zieschang invariants (i.e., labeled molecules) of the system are calculated.
We propose the study of a conformally invariant functional for surfaces of complex projective plane which is closely related to the classical Willmore functional. We show that minimal surfaces of complex projective plane are critical for this functional and construct some minima for it via the twistors spaces of complex projective plane. Also, we find lower bounds for this functional and for its restriction to the class of Lagrangian surfaces and characterize the complex lines and the Lagrangian totally geodesic surfaces and the Whitney spheres as the only attaining those bounds.
We present a uniform framework generalising and extending the classical theories of projective differential geometry, c-projective geometry, and almost quaternionic geometry. Such geometries, which we call \emph{projective parabolic geometries}, are abelian parabolic geometries whose flat model is an R-space $G\cdot\mathfrak{p}$ in the infinitesimal isotropy representation $\mathbb{W}$ of a larger self-dual symmetric R-space $H\cdot\mathfrak{q}$. We also give a classification of projective parabolic geometries with $H\cdot\mathfrak{q}$ irreducible which, in addition to the aforementioned class…
We show that the infinite-dimensional space of Zoll Finsler metrics on the projective plane strongly deformation retracts to the canonical round metric. In particular, this space of Zoll Finsler metrics is connected. Moreover, the strong deformation retraction arises from a deformation of the geodesic flow of every Zoll Finsler projective plane to the geodesic flow of the round metric through a family of smooth free circle actions induced by the curvature flow of the canonical round projective plane. This construction provides a description of the geodesics of the Zoll Finsler metrics along th…
We give a geometric characterization of certain hypersurfaces of cohomogeneity one in the complex projective and hyperbolic planes. We also obtain some partial classifications of austere hypersurfaces and of Levi-flat hypersurfaces with constant mean curvature in these spaces.
A natural parametrization of smooth projective plane curves which tolerates the presence of sextactic points is the Forsyth-Laguerre parametrization. On a closed projective plane curve, which necessarily contains sextactic points, this parametrization is, however, in general not periodic. We show that by the introduction of an additional scalar parameter $α\leq \frac12$ one can define a projectively invariant $2π$-periodic global parametrization on every simple closed convex sufficiently smooth projective plane curve without inflection points. For non-quadratic curves this parametrization, whi…
The aim of this paper and its prequel is to introduce and classify the irreducible holonomy algebras of the projective Tractor connection. This is achieved through the construction of a `projective cone', a Ricci-flat manifold one dimension higher whose affine holonomy is equal to the Tractor holonomy of the underlying manifold. This paper uses the result to enable the construction of manifolds with each possible holonomy algebra.
We show that the standard definitions of Sasaki structures have elegant and simplifying interpretations in terms of projective differential geometry. For Sasaki-Einstein structures we use projective geometry to provide a resolution of such structures into geometrically less rigid components; the latter elemental components are separately, complex, orthogonal, and symplectic holonomy reductions of the canonical projective tractor/Cartan connection. This leads to a characterisation of Sasaki-Einstein structures as projective structures with certain unitary holonomy reductions. As an immediate ap…
It is demonstrated that the stationary Veselov-Novikov (VN) and the stationary modified Veselov-Novikov (mVN) equations describe one and the same class of surfaces in projective differential geometry: the so-called isothermally asymptotic surfaces, examples of which include arbitrary quadrics and cubics, quartics of Kummer, projective transforms of affine spheres and rotation surfaces. The stationary mVN equation arises in the Wilczynski approach and plays the role of the projective "Gauss-Codazzi" equations, while the stationary VN equation follows from the Lelieuvre representation of surface…
These are lecture notes on the rigidity of submanifolds of projective space "resembling" compact Hermitian symmetric spaces in their homogeneous embeddings. Recent results are surveyed, along with their classical predecessors. The notes include an introduction to moving frames in projective geometry, an exposition of the Hwang-Yamaguchi ridgidity theorem and a new variant of the Hwang-Yamaguchi theorem.
The aim of the present paper is to provide an intrinsic investigation of projective changes in Finlser geometry, following the pullback formalism. Various known local results are generalized and other new intrinsic results are obtained. Nontrivial characterizations of projective changes are given. The fundamental projectively invariant tensors, namely, the projective deviation tensor, the Weyl torsion tensor, the Weyl curvature tensor and the Douglas tensor are investigated. The properties of these tensors and their interrelationships are obtained. Projective connections and projectively flat …
In this paper, we study a family of curves on $S^2$ that defines a two-dimensional smooth projective plane. We use curve shortening flow to prove that any two-dimensional smooth projective plane can be smoothly deformed through a family of smooth projective planes into one which is isomorphic to the real projective plane. In addition, as a consequence of our main result, we show that any two smooth embedded curves on $RP^2$ which intersect transversally at exactly one point converge to two different geodesics under the flow.
A classical result asserts that the complex projective plane modulo complex conjugation is the 4-dimensional sphere. We generalize this result in two directions by considering the projective planes over the normed real division algebras and by considering the complexifications of these four projective planes.
In this text, we explore the tools that Projective Differential Geometry can provide for the asymptotic analysis of classical fields on projectively compact manifolds. We emphasise on the case of order 2-compactifications and develop, in this case, a projective exterior differential tractor calculus that is analogous to that existing for conformally compact manifolds.
The known upper bounds for the multiplicities of the Laplace-Beltrami operator eigenvalues on the real projective plane are improved for the eigenvalues with even indexes. Upper bounds for Dirichlet, Neumann and Steklov eigenvalues on the real projective plane with holes are also provided.
An isomorphism of symplectically tame smooth pseudocomplex structures on the complex projective plane which is a homeomorphism and differentiable of full rank at two points is smooth.
We classify all closed 1-connected manifolds $M$ which look like projective planes, i.e. with integral homology $H_*(M)=Z^3$. Furthermore, we give an explicit construction of these manifolds as Thom spaces of open disk bundles.
We present a new proof of the classification of complex simple Lie algebras via the projective geometry of homogeneous varieties. Our proof proceeds by constructing homogeneous varieties using the ideals of the secant and tangential varieties of homogeneous varieties already constructed. Our algorithms make no reference to root systems. Our proofs use properties of root systems, but not their classification.
This is the second in a series of papers on natural modification of the normal tractor connection in a parabolic geometry, which naturally prolongs an underlying overdetermined system of invariant differential equations. We give a short review of the general procedure developed in [5] and then compute the prolongation covariant derivatives for a number of interesting examples in projective, conformal and Grassmannian geometries.
We give an elementary introduction to our papers relating the geometry of rational homogeneous varieties to representation theory. We also describe related work and recent progress.
We construct a Kaehler structure on the punctured cotangent bundle of the Cayley projective plane whose Kaehler form coincides with the natural symplectic form on the cotangent bundle and we show that the geodesic flow action is holomorphic and is expressed in a quite explicit form. We also give an embedding of the punctured cotangent bundle of the Cayley projective plane into the space of 8 times 8 complex matrices.
We review how a reduction procedure along a principal fibration and an unfolding procedure associated to a suitable momentum map allow to describe the Kähler geometry of a finite dimensional complex projective spaces.
This is an expanded and updated version of a lecture series I gave at Seoul National University in September 1997. It is in some sense an update of the 1979 Griffiths and Harris paper with a similar title. I discuss: Homogeneous varieties, Topology and consequences Projective differential invariants, Varieties with degenerate Gauss images, When can a uniruled variety be smooth?, Dual varieties, Linear systems of bounded and constant rank, Secant and tangential varieties, Systems of quadrics with tangential defects, Recognizing uniruled varieties, Recognizing intersections of quadrics, Recogniz…
We prove a new inequality relating volume to length of closed geodesics on area minimizers for generic metrics on the complex projective plane. We exploit recent regularity results for area minimizers by Moore and White, and the Kronheimer--Mrowka proof of the Thom conjecture.
We calculate the Riemann curvature tensor and sectional curvature for the Lie group of volume-preserving diffeomorphisms of the Klein bottle and projective plane. In particular, we investigate the sign of the sectional curvature, and find a possible disagreement with a theorem of Lukatskii. We suggest an amendment to this theorem.
Here we treat the problem: given a torsion-free connection do its geodesics, as unparametrised curves, coincide with the geodesics of an Einstein metric? We find projective invariants such that the vanishing of these is necessary for the existence of such a metric, and in generic settings the vanishing of these is also sufficient. We also obtain results for the problem of metrisability (without the Einstein condition): We show that the odd Chern type invariants of an affine connection are projective invariants that obstruct the existence of a projectively related Levi-Civita connection. In add…
A projective geometry is an equivalence class of torsion free connections sharing the same unparametrised geodesics; this is a basic structure for understanding physical systems. Metric projective geometry is concerned with the interaction of projective and pseudo-Riemannian geometry. We show that the BGG machinery of projective geometry combines with structures known as Yang-Mills detour complexes to produce a general tool for generating invariant pseudo-Riemannian gauge theories. This produces (detour) complexes of differential operators corresponding to gauge invariances and dynamics. We sh…
Consider a finite dimensional (generally reducible) polynomial representation ρof GL_n. A projective compactification of GL_n is the closure of ρ(GL_n) in the space of all operators defined up to a factor (this class of spaces can be characterized as equivariant projective normal compactifications of GL_n). We give an expicit description for all projective compactifications. We also construct explicitly (in elementary geometrical terms) a universal object for all projective compactifications of GL_n.
The purpose of this paper is to explicitly compute the Seshadri constants of all ample line bundles on fake projective planes. The proof relies on the theory of the Toledo invariant, and more precisely on its characterization of $\C$-Fuchsian curves in complex hyperbolic spaces.
