We use reduced homogeneous coordinates to study Riemannian geometry of the octonionic (or Cayley) projective plane. Our method extends to the para-octonionic (or split octonionic) projective plane, the octonionic projective plane of indefinite signature, and the hyperbolic dual of the octonionic projective plane; we discuss these manifolds in the later sections of the paper.
We give an inductive construction for irreducible Clifford systems on Euclidean vector spaces. We then discuss how this notion can be adapted to Riemannian manifolds, and outline some developments in octonionic geometry.
The dimensions of the spaces of $k$-homogeneous $\mathrm{Spin}(9)$-invariant valuations on the octonionic plane are computed using results from the theory of differential forms on contact manifolds as well as octonionic geometry and representation theory. Moreover, a valuation on Riemannian manifolds of particular interest is constructed which yields, as a special case, an element of $\mathrm{Val}_2^{\mathrm{Spin}(9)}$.
We deal with Riemannian properties of the octonionic Hopf fibration S^{15}-->S^8, in terms of the structure given by its symmetry group Spin(9). In particular, we show that any vertical vector field has at least one zero, thus reproving the non-existence of S^1 subfibrations. We then discuss Spin(9)-structures from a conformal viewpoint and determine the structure of compact locally conformally parallel Spin(9)-manifolds. Eventually, we give a list of examples of locally conformally parallel Spin(9)-manifolds.
It is well known that there is a unique $Spin(9)$-invariant 8-form on the octonionic plane that naturally yields a canonical differential 8-form on any Riemannian manifold with a weak $Spin(9)$-structure. Over the decades, this invariant has been studied extensively and described in several equivalent ways. In the present article, a new explicit algebraic formula for the $Spin(9)$-invariant 8-form is given. The approach we use generalizes the standard expression of the Kähler 2-form. Namely, the invariant 8-form is constructed only from the two octonion-valued coordinate 1-forms on the octonio…
Starting from the 2001 Thomas Friedrich's work on Spin(9), we review some interactions between Spin(9) and geometries related to octonions. Several topics are discussed in this respect: explicit descriptions of the Spin(9) canonical 8-form and its analogies with quaternionic geometry as well as the role of Spin(9) both in the classical problems of vector fields on spheres and in the geometry of the octonionic Hopf fibration. Next, we deal with locally conformally parallel Spin(9) manifolds in the framework of intrinsic torsion. Finally, we discuss applications of Clifford systems and Clifford …
We extract a new class of paracontact paracomplex Riemannian manifolds arising from certain cone construction, call it para-Sasaki-like Riemannian manifold and give explicit examples. We define a hyperbolic extension of a paraholomorphic paracomplex Riemannian manifold, which is a local product of two Riemannian spaces with equal dimensions, showing that it is a para-Sasaki-like Riemannian manifold. If the starting paraholomorphic paracomplex Riemannian manifold is complete Einstein with negative scalar curvature then its hyperbolic extension is a complete Einstein para-Sasaki-like Riemannian …
The aim of this note is the study of Einstein condition for para-holomorphic Riemannian metrics in the para-complex geometry framework. Firstly, we make some general considerations about para-complex Riemannian manifolds (not necessarily para-holomorphic). Next, using an one-to-one correspondence between para-holomorphic Riemannian metrics and para-Kähler Norden metrics, we study the Einstein condition for a para-holomorphic Riemannian metric and the associated real para-Kähler Norden metric on a para-complex manifold. Finally, it is shown that every semi-simple para-complex Lie group inherits…
We prove that the Euclidean plane is the only Riemannian plane with total curvature and free of conjugate points that satisfies Playfair's version of the parallel postulate.
We give a general Lie-theoretic construction for anti-invariant almost Hermitian Riemannian submersions, anti-invariant quaternion Riemannian submersions, anti-invariant para-Hermitian Riemannian submersions, anti-invariant para-quaternion Riemannian submersions, and anti-invariant octonian Riemannian submersions. This yields many compact Einstein examples.
In this paper we introduce paraquaternionic CR-submanifolds of almost paraquaternionic hermitian manifolds and state some basic results on their differential geometry. We also study a class of semi-Riemannian submersions from paraquaternionic CR-submanifolds of paraquaternionic Kaehler manifolds.
Object of study are para-Ricci-like solitons on para-Sasaki-like almost paracontact almost paracomplex Riemannian manifolds, briefly, Riemannian $Π$-manifolds. Different cases when the potential of the soliton is the Reeb vector field or pointwise collinear to it are considered. Some additional geometric properties of the constructed objects are proven. Results for a parallel symmetric second-order covariant tensor on the considered manifolds are obtained. Explicit example of dimension 5 in support of the given assertions is provided.
Gradient almost para-Ricci-like solitons on para-Sasaki-like Riemannian $Π$-manifolds are studied. It is proved that these objects have constant soliton coefficients. For the soliton under study is shown that the corresponding scalar curvatures of the considered both metrics are equal and constant and its Ricci tensor is a constant multiple of the vertical component. Explicit example of a 3-dimensional para-Sasaki-like Riemannian $Π$-manifold is provided in support of the proved assertions.
In this paper we study a semi-Riemannian submersion from Lorentzian (para)almost contact manifolds and find necessary and sufficient conditions for the characteristic vector field to be vertical or horizontal. We also obtain decomposition theorems for an anti-invariant semi-Riemannian submersion from Lorentzian (para)Sasakian manifolds onto a Lorentzian manifold.
We obtain the natural diagonal almost product and locally product structures on the total space of the cotangent bundle of a Riemannian manifold. We find the Riemannian almost product (locally product) and the (almost) para-Hermitian cotangent bundles of natural diagonal lift type. We prove the characterization theorem for the natural diagonal (almost) para-Kählerian structures on the total spaces of the cotangent bundle.
Para-Ricci-like solitons with arbitrary potential on para-Sasaki-like Riemannian $Π$-manifolds are introduced and studied. For the studied soliton, it is proved that its Ricci tensor is a constant multiple of the vertical component of both metrics. Thus, the corresponding scalar curvatures of both considered metrics are equal and constant. An explicit example of the Lie group as the manifold under study is presented.
I discuss geometry and normal forms for pseudo-Riemannian metrics with parallel spinor fields in some interesting dimensions. I also discuss the interaction of these conditions for parallel spinor fields with the condition that the Ricci tensor vanish (which, for pseudo-Riemannian manifolds, is not an automatic consequence of the existence of a nontrivial parallel spinor field).
In this paper we study almost complex and almost para-complex Cayley structures on six-dimensional pseudo-Riemannian spheres in the space of purely imaginary octaves of the split Cayley algebra $\mathbf{Ca}'$. It is shown that the Cayley structures are non-integrable, their basic geometric characteristics are calculated. In contrast to the usual Riemann sphere $\mathbb{S}^6$, there exist (integrable) complex structures and para-complex structures on the pseudospheres under consideration.
The study of real hypersurfaces in pseudo-Riemannian complex space forms and para-complex space forms, which are the pseudo-Riemannian generalizations of the complex space forms, is addressed. It is proved that there are no umbilic hypersurfaces, nor real hypersurfaces with parallel shape operator in such spaces. Denoting by $J$ be the complex or para-complex structure of a pseudo-complex or para-complex space form respectively, a non-degenerate hypersurface of such space with unit normal vector field $N$ is said to be \em Hopf \em if the tangent vector field $JN$ is a principal direction. It …
We show that every paracomplex space form is locally isometric to a modified Riemannian extension and give necessary and sufficient conditions so that a modified Riemannian extension is Einstein. We exhibit Riemannian extension Osserman manifolds of signature (3,3) whose Jacobi operators have non-trivial Jordan normal form and which are not nilpotent. We present new four dimensional results in Osserman geometry.
Ambrose and Singer characterized connected, simply-connected and complete homogeneous Riemannian manifolds as Riemannian manifolds admitting a metric connection such that its curvature and torsion are parallel. The aim of this paper is to extend Ambrose-Singer Theorem to the general framework of locally homogeneous pseudo-Riemannian manifolds. In addition we study under which conditions a locally homogeneous pseudo-Riemannian manifold can be recovered from the curvature and their covariant derivatives at some point up to finite order. The same problem is tackled in the presence of a geometric …
We study in this paper previously defined by V.N. Berestovskii and C.P. Plaut $δ$-homogeneous spaces in the case of Riemannian manifolds. Every such manifold has non-negative sectional curvature. The universal covering of any $δ$-homogeneous Riemannian manifolds is itself $δ$-homogeneous. In turn, every simply connected Riemannian $δ$-homogeneous manifold is a direct metric product of an Euclidean space and compact simply connected indecomposable homogeneous manifolds; all factors in this product are itself $δ$-homogeneous. We find different characterizations of $δ$-homogeneous Riemannian spac…
We show that for any weakly reflective submanifold of a compact isotropy irreducible Riemannian homogeneous space its inverse image under the parallel transport map is an infinite dimensional weakly reflective PF submanifold of a Hilbert space. This is an extension of the author's previous result in the case of compact irreducible Riemannian symmetric spaces. We also give a characterization of so obtained weakly reflective PF submanifolds.
Let M be a smooth compact manifold without boundary. We consider two smooth Sub-Semi-Riemannian metrics on M. Under suitable conditions, we show that they are almost conformally isometric in an Lp sense. Assume also that M carries a Riemannian metric with parallel Ricci curvature. Then an equation of Ricci type, is in some sense solvable, without assuming any closeness near a special metric.
Let $(M,g)$ be an $n-$dimensional Riemannian manifold and $T_{1}^{1}(M)$ be its $(1,1)-$tensor bundle equipped with the rescaled Sasaki type metric $% ^{S}g_{f}$ which rescale the horizontal part by a nonzero differentiable function $f$. In the present paper, we discuss curvature properties of the Levi-Civita connection and another metric connection of $T_{1}^{1}(M)$. We construct almost paracomplex Norden structures on $T_{1}^{1}(M)$ and investigate conditions for these structures to be para-Kähler (paraholomorphic) and quasi-Kähler. Also, some properties of almost paracomplex Norden structur…
The notion of a parallelizable distribution has been introduced and investigated. A non-integrable parallelizable distribution carries a natural sub-Riemannian structure. The geometry of this structure has been studied from the bi-viewpoint of absolute parallelism geometry and sub-Riemannian geometry. Two remarkable linear connections have been constructed on a sub-Riemannian parallelizable distribution, namely, the Weitzenböck connection and the sub-Riemannian connection. The obtained results have been applied to two concrete examples: the spheres $S^3$ and $S^7$.
The first aim of the present paper is to compare various sub-Riemannian structures over the three dimensional sphere $S^3$ originating from different constructions. Namely, we describe the sub-Riemannian geometry of $S^3$ arising through its right Lie group action over itself, the one inherited from the natural complex structure of the open unit ball in $\comp^2$ and the geometry that appears when considering the Hopf map as a principal bundle. The main result of this comparison is that in fact those three structures coincide. In the second place, we present two bracket generating distribution…
We show that the pseudo-Riemannian geometry of submanifolds can be formulated in terms of higher order multi-linear maps. In particular, we obtain a Poisson bracket formulation of almost (para-)Kähler geometry.
