We study percolation in the following random environment: let $Z$ be a Poisson process of constant intensity in the plane, and form the Voronoi tessellation of the plane with respect to $Z$. Colour each Voronoi cell black with probability $p$, independently of the other cells. We show that the critical probability is 1/2. More precisely, if $p>1/2$ then the union of the black cells contains an infinite component with probability 1, while if $p<1/2$ then the distribution of the size of the component of black cells containing a given point decays exponentially. These results are analogous to Kesten's results for bond percolation in the square lattice.
The result corresponding to Harris' Theorem for bond percolation in the square lattice is known: Zvavitch noted that one of the many proofs of this result can easily be adapted to the random Voronoi setting. For Kesten's results, none of the existing proofs seems to adapt. The methods used here also give a new and very simple proof of Kesten's Theorem for the square lattice; we hope they will be applicable in other contexts as well.
We prove that the standard Russo-Seymour-Welsh theory is valid for Voronoi percolation. This implies that at criticality the crossing probabilities for rectangles are bounded by constants depending only on their aspect ratio. This result has many consequences, such as the polynomial decay of the one-arm event at criticality.
In this paper, we consider Voronoi percolation in the hyperbolic space $\mathbb{H}^d$ ($d\ge 2$) and show that the phase transition is sharp. More precisely, we show that for Voronoi percolation with parameter $p$ generated by a homogeneous Poisson point process with intensity $λ$, there exists $p_c:=p_c(λ,d)$ such that the probability of a monochromatic path from the origin reaching a distance of $n$ decays exponentially fast in $n$. We also prove the mean-field lower bound $\mathbb{P}_{λ,p}(0\leftrightarrow \infty)\ge c(p-p_c)$ for $p>p_c$.
Using the randomized algorithm method developed by Duminil-Copin, Raoufi and Tassion (2019b), we exhibit sharp phase transition for the confetti percolation model. This provides an alternate proof, than that of Ahlberg, Tassion and Texeira (2018), for the critical parameter for percolation in this model to be $1/2$ when the radius of the underlying shapes for the distinct colours arise from the same distribution. In addition, we study the covered area fraction for this model, which is akin to the covered volume fraction in continuum percolation. Modulo a certain `transitivity condition', this …
In this paper, we introduce and study the annealed spectral sample of Voronoi percolation, which is a continuous and finite point process in $\mathbb{R}^2$ whose definition is mostly inspired by the spectral sample of Bernoulli percolation introduced in [GPS10] by Garban, Pete and Schramm. We show a clustering effect as well as estimates on the full lower tail of this spectral object. Our main motivation is the study of two models of dynamical critical Voronoi percolation in the plane. In the first model, the Voronoi tiling does not evolve in time while the colors of the cells are resampled at…
We consider percolation on the Voronoi tessellation generated by a homogeneous Poisson point process on the hyperbolic plane. We show that the critical probability for the existence of an infinite cluster is asymptotically equal to $πλ/3$ as $λ\to0.$ This answers a question of Benjamini and Schramm.
We prove that the probability of crossing a large square in quenched Voronoi percolation converges to 1/2 at criticality, confirming a conjecture of Benjamini, Kalai and Schramm from 1999. The main new tools are a quenched version of the box-crossing property for Voronoi percolation at criticality, and an Efron-Stein type bound on the variance of the probability of the crossing event in terms of the sum of the squares of the influences. As a corollary of the proof, we moreover obtain that the quenched crossing event at criticality is almost surely noise sensitive.
In this work, we study a new model for continuum line-of-sight percolation in a random environment driven by the Poisson-Voronoi tessellation in the $d$-dimensional Euclidean space. The edges (one-dimensional facets, or simply 1-facets) of this tessellation are the support of a Cox point process, while the vertices (zero-dimensional facets or simply 0-facets) are the support of a Bernoulli point process. Taking the superposition $Z$ of these two processes, two points of $Z$ are linked by an edge if and only if they are sufficiently close and located on the same edge (1-facet) of the supporting…
We consider percolation on the Voronoi tessellation generated by a homogeneous Poisson point process on the hyperbolic plane. We show that the critical probability for the existence of an infinite cluster tends to $1/2$ as the intensity of the Poisson process tends to infinity. This confirms a conjecture of Benjamini and Schramm.
In this paper we study noise sensitivity and threshold phenomena for Poisson Voronoi percolation on $\mathbb{R}^2$. In the setting of Boolean functions, both threshold phenomena and noise sensitivity can be understood via the study of randomized algorithms. Together with a simple discretization argument, such techniques apply also to the continuum setting. Via the study of a suitable algorithm we show that box-crossing events in Voronoi percolation are noise sensitive and present a threshold phenomenon with polynomial window. We also study the effect of other kinds of perturbations, and emphas…
We make use of the recent proof that the critical probability for percolation on random Voronoi tessellations is 1/2 to prove the corresponding result for random Johnson-Mehl tessellations, as well as for two-dimensional slices of higher dimensional Voronoi tessellations. Surprisingly, the proof is a little simpler for these more complicated models.
Position $n$ points uniformly at random in the unit square $S$, and consider the Voronoi tessellation of $S$ corresponding to the set $η$ of points. Toss a fair coin for each cell in the tessellation to determine whether to colour the cell red or blue. Let $H_S$ denote the event that there exists a red horizontal crossing of $S$ in the resulting colouring. In 1999, Benjamini, Kalai and Schramm conjectured that knowing the tessellation, but not the colouring, asymptotically gives no information as to whether the event $H_S$ will occur or not. More precisely, since $H_S$ occurs with probability …
We prove annealed scaling relations for planar Voronoi percolation. To our knowledge, this is the first result of this kind for a continuum percolation model. We are mostly inspired by the proof of scaling relations for Bernoulli percolation by Kesten [Kes87]. Along the way, we show an annealed quasi-multiplicativity property by relying on the quenched box-crossing property proved by Ahlberg, Griffiths, Morris and Tassion [AGMT16]. Intermediate results also include the study of quenched and annealed notions of pivotal events and the extension of the quenched box-crossing property of [AGMT16] t…
We prove that for Voronoi percolation on $\mathbb{R}^d$, there exists $p_c\in[0,1]$ such that - for $p<p_c$, there exists $c_p>0$ such that $\mathbb{P}_p[0\text{ connected to distance }n]\leq \exp(-c_p n)$, - there exists $c>0$ such that for $p>p_c$, $\mathbb{P}_p[0\text{ connected to }\infty]\geq c(p-p_c)$. For dimension 2, this result offers a new way of showing that $p_c(2)=1/2$. This paper belongs to a series of papers using the theory of algorithms to prove sharpness of the phase transition.
Ahlberg, Griffiths, Morris and Tassion have proved that, asymptotically almost surely, the quenched crossing probabilities for critical planar Voronoi percolation do not depend on the environment. We prove an analogous result for arm events. In particular, we prove that the variance of the quenched probability of an arm event is at most a constant times the square of the annealed probability. The fact that the arm events are degenerate and non-monotonic add two major difficulties. As an application, we prove that there exists $ε> 0$ such that the following holds for the annealed percolation fu…
Percolation properties of the dead leaves model, also known as confetti percolation, are considered. More precisely, we prove that the critical probability for confetti percolation with square-shaped leaves is 1/2. This result is related to a question of Benjamini and Schramm concerning disk-shaped leaves and can be seen as a variant of the Harris-Kesten theorem for bond percolation. The proof is based on techniques developed by Bollobás and Riordan to determine the critical probability for Voronoi and Johnson-Mehl percolation.
Let $T$ be a random ergodic pseudometric over $\mathbb R^d$. This setting generalizes the classical \emph{first passage percolation} (FPP) over $\mathbb Z^d$. We provide simple conditions on $T$, the decay of instant one-arms and exponential quasi-independence, that ensure the positivity of its time constants, that is almost surely, the pseudo-distance given by $T$ from the origin is asymptotically a norm. Combining this general result with previously known ones, we prove that The known phase transition for Gaussian percolation in the case of fields with positive correlations with exponentiall…
Let N be distributed as a Poisson random set on R^d with intensity comparable to the Lebesgue measure. Consider the Voronoi tiling of R^d, (C_v)_{v\in N}, where C_v is composed by points x in R^d that are closer to v than to any other v' in N. A polyomino P of size n is a connected union (in the usual R^d topological sense) of n tiles, and we denote by Pi_n the collection of all polyominos P of size n containing the origin. Assume that the weight of a Voronoi tile C_v is given by F(C_v), where F is a nonnegative functional on Voronoi tiles. In this paper we investigate the tail behavior of the…
This is a study of percolation in the hyperbolic plane and on regular tilings in the hyperbolic plane. The processes discussed include Bernoulli site and bond percolation on planar hyperbolic graphs, invariant dependent percolations on such graphs, and Poisson-Voronoi-Bernoulli percolation. We prove the existence of three distinct nonempty phases for the Bernoulli processes. In the first phase, $p\in(0, p_c]$, there are no unbounded clusters, but there is a unique infinite cluster for the dual process. In the second phase, $p\in(p_c,p_u)$, there are infinitely many unbounded clusters for the p…
We generalize the standard site percolation model on the $d$-dimensional lattice to a model on random tessellations of $\mathbb R^d$. We prove the uniqueness of the infinite cluster by adapting the Burton-Keane argument \cite{burton1989density}, develop two frameworks that imply the non-triviality of the phase transition and show that large classes of random tessellations fit into one of these frameworks. Our focus is on a very general approach that goes well beyond the typical Poisson driven models. The most interesting examples might be Voronoi tessellations induced by determinantal processe…
Consider a Voronoi tiling of the Euclidean space based on a realization of a inhomogeneous Poisson random set. A Voronoi polyomino is a finite and connected union of Voronoi tiles. In this paper we provide tail bounds for the number of boxes that are intersected by a Voronoi polyomino, and vice-versa. These results will be crucial to analyze self-avoiding paths, greedy polyominoes and first-passage percolation models on Voronoi tilings and on the dual graph, named the Delaunay triangulation.
The Voronoi tessellation of a homogeneous Poisson point process in the lower half-plane gives rise to a family of vertical elongated cells in the upper half-plane. The set of edges of these cells is ruled by a Markovian branching mechanism which is asymptotically described by two sequences of iid variables which are respectively Beta and exponentially distributed. This leads to a precise description of the scaling limit of a so-called typical cell. The limit object is a random apeirogon that we name menhir in reference to the Gallic huge stones. We also deduce from the aforementioned branching…
We consider a stationary face-to-face tessellation $X$ of $\mathbb{R}^d$ and introduce several percolation models by colouring some of the faces black in a consistent way. Our main model is cell percolation, where cells are declared black with probability $p$ and white otherwise. We are interested in geometric properties of the union $Z$ of black faces. Under natural integrability assumptions we first express asymptotic mean-values of intrinsic volumes in terms of Palm expectations associated with the faces. In the second part of the paper we study asymptotic covariances of intrinsic volumes o…
Recently, the authors showed that the critical probability for random Voronoi percolation in the plane is 1/2. A by-product of the method was a short proof of the Harris-Kesten Theorem concerning bond percolation in the planar square lattice. The aim of this paper is to show that the same techniques can be applied to many other planar percolation models, both to obtain short proofs of known results, and to prove new ones.
In this paper, we are interested in the behavior of the typical Poisson-Voronoi cell in the plane when the radius of the largest disk centered at the nucleus and contained in the cell goes to infinity. We prove a law of large numbers for its number of vertices and the area of the cell outside the disk. Moreover, for the latter, we establish a central limit theorem as well as moderate deviation type results. The proofs deeply rely on precise connections between Poisson-Voronoi tessellations, convex hulls of Poisson samples and germ-grain models in the unit ball. Besides, we derive analogous fac…
We study Bernoulli percolations on random lattices of the half-plane obtained as local limit of uniform planar triangulations or quadrangulations. Using the characteristic spatial Markov property or peeling process of these random lattices we prove a surprisingly simple universal formula for the critical threshold for bond and face percolations on these graphs. Our techniques also permit us to compute off-critical and critical exponents related to percolation clusters such as the volume and the perimeter.
We consider the random walk loop soup on the discrete half-plane and study the percolation problem, i.e. the existence of an infinite cluster of loops. We show that the critical value of the intensity is equal to 1/2. The absence of percolation at intensity 1/2 was shown in a previous work. We also show that in the supercritical regime, one can keep only the loops up to some large enough upper bound on the diameter and still have percolation.
We study site percolation on uniform quadrangulations of the upper half plane. The main contribution is a method for applying Angel's peeling process, in particular for analyzing an evolving boundary condition during the peeling. Our method lets us obtain rigorous and explicit upper and lower bounds on the percolation threshold $p_\mathrm{c}$, and thus show in particular that $0.5511\leq p_\mathrm{c}\leq 0.5581$. The method can be extended to site percolation on other half-planar maps with the domain Markov property.
We consider Lipschitz percolation in $d+1$ dimensions above planes tilted by an angle $γ$ along one or several coordinate axes. In particular, we are interested in the asymptotics of the critical probability as $d \to \infty$ as well as $γ\to π/4.$ Our principal results show that the convergence of the critical probability to 1 is polynomial as $d\to \infty$ and $γ\to π/4.$ In addition, we identify the correct order of this polynomial convergence and in $d=1$ we also obtain the correct prefactor.
We consider a first-passage percolation model on a Delaunay triangulation of the plane. In this model each edge is independently equipped with a nonnegative random variable, with distribution function F, which is interpreted as the time it takes to traverse the edge. Vahidi-Asl and Wierman have shown that, under a suitable moment condition on F, the minimum time taken to reach a point x from the origin 0 is asymptotically μ(F)|x|, where μ(F) is a nonnegative finite constant. However the exact value of the time constant μ(F) still a fundamental problem in percolation theory. Here we prove that …
We study a large class of Bernoulli percolation models on random lattices of the half- plane, obtained as local limits of uniform planar triangulations or quadrangulations. We first compute the exact value of the site percolation threshold in the quadrangular case using the so-called peeling techniques. Then, we generalize a result of Angel about the scaling limit of crossing probabilities, that are a natural analogue to Cardy's formula in (non-random) plane lattices. Our main result is that those probabilities are universal, in the sense that they do not depend on the percolation model neithe…
The directed last passage percolation (LPP) on the quarter-plane is a growing model. To come into the growing set, a cell needs that the cells on its bottom and on its left to be in the growing set, and then to wait a random time. We present here a generalisation of directed last passage percolation (GLPP). In GLPP, the waiting time of a cell depends on the difference of the coming times of its bottom and left cells. We explain in this article the physical meaning of this generalisation. In this first work on GLPP, we study them as a growing model on the cylinders rather than on the quarter-pl…
A few years ago two of us introduced, motivated by the study of certain forest-fireprocesses, the self-destructive percolation model (abbreviated as sdp model). A typical configuration for the sdp model with parameters p and delta is generated in three steps: First we generate a typical configuration for the ordinary percolation model with parameter p. Next, we make all sites in the infinite occupied cluster vacant. Finally, each site that was already vacant in the beginning or made vacant by the above action, becomes occupied with probability delta (independent of the other sites). Let theta(…
The ellipses model is a continuum percolation process in which ellipses with random orientation and eccentricity are placed in the plane according to a Poisson point process. A parameter $α$ controls the tail distribution of the major axis' distribution and we focus on the regime $α\in (1,2)$ for which there exists a unique infinite cluster of ellipses and this cluster fulfills the so called highway property. We prove that the distance within this infinite cluster behaves asymptotically like the (unrestricted) Euclidean distance in the plane. We also show that the chemical distance between poi…
We show that random walk on a stationary random graph with positive anchored expansion and exponential volume growth has positive speed. We also show that two families of random triangulations of the hyperbolic plane, the hyperbolic Poisson Voronoi tessellation and the hyperbolic Poisson Delaunay triangulation, have 1-skeletons with positive anchored expansion. As a consequence, we show that the simple random walks on these graphs have positive speed. We include a section of open problems and conjectures on the topics of stationary geometric random graphs and the hyperbolic Poisson Voronoi tes…
We consider a critical Bernoulli site percolation on the uniform infinite planar triangulation. We study the tail distributions of the peeling time, perimeter, and volume of the hull of a critical cluster. The exponents obtained here differs by a factor 2 from those computed previously by Angel and Curien (2015) in the case of critical site percolation on the uniform infinite half-plane triangulation.
We prove that by scaling nearest-neighbour ferromagnetic energies defined on Poisson random sets in the plane we obtain an isotropic perimeter energy with a surface tension characterised by an asymptotic formula. The result relies on proving that cells with `very long' or `very short' edges of the corresponding Voronoi tessellation can be neglected. In this way we may apply Geometry Measure Theory tools to define a compact convergence, and a characterisation of metric properties of clusters of Voronoi cells using limit theorems for subadditive processes.
It is an open problem to show that in two-dimensional first-passage percolation, the sequence of finite geodesics from any point to $(n,0)$ has a limit in $n$. In this paper, we consider this question for first-passage percolation on a wide class of subgraphs of $\mathbb {Z}^2$: those whose vertex set is infinite and connected with an infinite connected complement. This includes, for instance, slit planes, half-planes and sectors. Writing $x_n$ for the sequence of boundary vertices, we show that the sequence of geodesics from any point to $x_n$ has an almost sure limit assuming only existence …
We study a random perturbation of the Euclidean plane, and show that it is unlikely that the distance-minimizing path between the two points can be extended into an infinite distance-minimizing path. More precisely, we study a large class of planar first-passage percolation models and show that the probability that a given site is visited by an infinite geodesic starting at the origin tends to zero uniformly with the distance. In particular, this show that the collection of infinite geodesics starting at the origin covers a negligible fraction of the plane. This provides the first progress on …
In this work, we consider critical planar site percolation on the triangular lattice and derive sharp estimates on the asymptotics of the probability of half-plane $j$-arm events for $j \geq 1$ and planar (polychromatic) $j$-arm events for $j>1$. These estimates greatly improve previous results and in particular answer (a large part of) a question of Schramm (ICM Proc., 2006).
The aim of this paper is to explore possible ways of extending Smirnov's proof of Cardy's formula for critical site-percolation on the triangular lattice to other cases (such as bond-percolation on the square lattice); the main question we address is that of the choice of the lattice embedding into the plane which gives rise to conformal invariance in the scaling limit. Even though we were not able to produce a complete proof, we believe that the ideas presented here go in the right direction.
We use isoperimetric inequalities combined with a new technique to prove upper bounds for the site percolation threshold of plane graphs with given minimum degree conditions. In the process we prove tight new isoperimetric bounds for certain classes of hyperbolic graphs. This establishes the vertex isoperimetric constant for all triangular and square hyperbolic lattices, answering a question of Lyons and Peres. We prove that plane graphs of minimum degree at least $7$ have site percolation threshold bounded away from $1/2$, which was conjectured by Benjamini and Schramm, and make progress on a…
I consider p-Bernoulli bond percolation on graphs of vertex-transitive tilings of the hyperbolic plane with finite sided faces (or, equivalently, on transitive, nonamenable, planar graphs with one end) and on their duals. It is known (Benjamini and Schramm) that in such a graph G we have three essential phases of percolation, i. e. 0 < p_c(G) < p_u(G) < 1, where p_c is the critical probability and p_u - the unification probability. I prove that in the middle phase a. s. all the ends of all the infinite clusters have one-point boundary in the boundary of H^2. This result is similar to some resu…
Slicing a Voronoi tessellation in $\mathbb{R}^n$ with a $k$-plane gives a $k$-dimensional weighted Voronoi tessellation, also known as power diagram or Laguerre tessellation. Mapping every simplex of the dual weighted Delaunay mosaic to the radius of the smallest empty circumscribed sphere whose center lies in the $k$-plane gives a generalized discrete Morse function. Assuming the Voronoi tessellation is generated by a Poisson point process in $\mathbb{R}^n$, we study the expected number of simplices in the $k$-dimensional weighted Delaunay mosaic as well as the expected number of intervals of…
Any infinite graph has site and bond percolation critical probabilities satisfying $p_c^{site}\geq p_c^{bond}$. The strict version of this inequality holds for many, but not all, infinite graphs. In this paper, the class of graphs for which the strict inequality holds is extended to a continuum percolation model. In Gilbert's graph with supercritical density on the Euclidean plane, there is almost surely a unique infinite connected component. We show that on this component $p_c^{site} > p_c^{bond}$. This also holds in higher dimensions.
We consider critical site percolation on the triangular lattice in the upper half-plane. Let $u_1, u_2$ be two sites on the boundary and $w$ a site in the interior of the half-plane. It was predicted by Simmons, Kleban and Ziff in a paper from 2007 that the ratio $\mathbb{P}(nu_1 \leftrightarrow nu_2 \leftrightarrow nw)^{2}\,/\,\mathbb{P}(nu_1 \leftrightarrow nu_2)\cdot\mathbb{P}(nu_1 \leftrightarrow nw)\cdot\mathbb{P}(nu_2 \leftrightarrow nw)$ converges to $K_F$ as $n \to \infty$, where $x\leftrightarrow y$ denotes the event that $x$ and $y$ are in the same open cluster, and $K_F$ is an expli…
In \emph{$k$-bootstrap percolation}, we fix $p\in (0,1)$, an integer $k$, and a plane graph $G$. Initially, we infect each face of $G$ independently with probability $p$. Infected faces remain infected forever, and if a healthy (uninfected) face has at least $k$ infected neighbors, then it becomes infected. For fixed $G$ and $p$, the \emph{percolation threshold} is the largest $k$ such that eventually all faces become infected, with probability at least $1/2$. For a large class of infinite graphs, we show that this threshold is independent of $p$. We consider bootstrap percolation in tilings o…
We study scaling limits and conformal invariance of critical site percolation on triangular lattice. We show that some percolation-related quantities are harmonic conformal invariants, and calculate their values in the scaling limit. As a particular case we obtain conformal invariance of the crossing probabilities and Cardy's formula. Then we prove existence, uniqueness, and conformal invariance of the continuum scaling limit.
We define a continuum percolation model that provides a collection of random ellipses on the plane and study the behavior of the covered set and the vacant set, the one obtained by removing all ellipses. Our model generalizes a construction that appears implicitly in the Poisson cylinder model of Tykesson and Windisch. The ellipses model has a parameter $α> 0$ associated with the tail decay of the major axis distribution; we only consider distributions $ρ$ satisfying $ρ[r, \infty) \asymp r^{-α}$. We prove that this model presents a double phase transition in $α$. For $α\in (0,1]$ the plane is …
We prove that the Minimal Spanning Tree and the Invasion Percolation Tree on a version of the triangular lattice in the complex plane have unique scaling limits, which are invariant under rotations, scalings, and, in the case of the MST, also under translations. However, they are not expected to be conformally invariant. We also prove some geometric properties of the limiting MST. The topology of convergence is the space of spanning trees introduced by Aizenman, Burchard, Newman & Wilson (1999), and the proof relies on the existence and conformal covariance of the scaling limit of the near-cri…
Let Z be a so-called well-behaved percolation, i.e. a certain random closed set in the hyperbolic plane, whose law is invariant under all isometries; for example the covered region in a Poisson Boolean model. The Hausdorff-dimension of the set of directions is determined in terms of the $α$-value of Z in which visibility from a fixed point to the ideal boundary of the hyperbolic plane is possible within Z. Moreover, the Hausdorff-dimension of the set of (hyperbolic) lines through a fixed point contained in Z is calculated. Thereby several conjectures raised by Benjamini, Jonasson, Schramm and …
