The ellipses model is a continuum percolation process in which ellipses with random orientation and eccentricity are placed in the plane according to a Poisson point process. A parameter $α$ controls the tail distribution of the major axis' distribution and we focus on the regime $α\in (1,2)$ for which there exists a unique infinite cluster of ellipses and this cluster fulfills the so called highway property. We prove that the distance within this infinite cluster behaves asymptotically like the (unrestricted) Euclidean distance in the plane. We also show that the chemical distance between points $x$ and $y$ behaves roughly as $c \log\log |x-y|$.
We define a continuum percolation model that provides a collection of random ellipses on the plane and study the behavior of the covered set and the vacant set, the one obtained by removing all ellipses. Our model generalizes a construction that appears implicitly in the Poisson cylinder model of Tykesson and Windisch. The ellipses model has a parameter $α> 0$ associated with the tail decay of the major axis distribution; we only consider distributions $ρ$ satisfying $ρ[r, \infty) \asymp r^{-α}$. We prove that this model presents a double phase transition in $α$. For $α\in (0,1]$ the plane is …
The non-random fluctuation is one of the central objects in first passage percolation. It was proved in [Shuta Nakajima. Divergence of non-random fluctuation in First Passage Percolation. {\em Electron. Commun. Probab.} 24 (65), 1-13. 2019.] that for a particular asymptotic direction, it diverges in a lattice first passage percolation with an explicit lower bound. In this paper, we discuss the non-random fluctuation in Euclidean first passage percolations and show that it diverges in dimension $d\geq 2$ in this model also. Compared with the result in \cite{N19}, the present result is proved fo…
The Euclidean first-passage percolation model of Howard and Newman is a rotationally invariant percolation model built on a Poisson point process. It is known that the passage time between 0 and $ne_1$ obeys a diffusive upper bound: $\mbox{Var}\, T(0,ne_1) \leq Cn$, and in this paper we improve this inequality to $Cn/\log n$. The methods follow the strategy used for sublinear variance proofs on the lattice, using the Falik-Samorodnitsky inequality and a Bernoulli encoding, but with substantial technical difficulties. To deal with the different setup of the Euclidean model, we represent the pas…
Scale-free percolation is a stochastic model for complex networks. In this spatial random graph model, vertices $x,y\in\mathbb{Z}^d$ are linked by an edge with probability depending on i.i.d.\ vertex weights and the Euclidean distance $|x-y|$. Depending on the various parameters involved, we get a rich phase diagram. We study graph distances and compare it to the Euclidean distance of the vertices. Our main attention is on a regime where graph distances are (poly-)logarithmic in the Euclidean distance. We obtain improved bounds on the logarithmic exponents. In the light tail regime, the correc…

There are various models of first passage percolation (FPP) in $\mathbb R^d$. We want to start a very general study of this topic. To this end we generalize the first passage percolation model on the lattice $\mathbb Z^d$ to $\mathbb R^d$ and adapt the results of \cite{boivin1990first} to prove a shape theorem for ergodic random pseudometrics on $\mathbb R^d$. A natural application of this result will be the study of FPP on random tessellations where a fluid starts in the zero cell and takes a random time to pass through the boundary of a cell into a neighbouring cell. We find that a tame rand…
The Euclidean first-passage percolation (FPP) model of Howard and Newman is a rotationally invariant model of FPP which is built on a graph whose vertices are the points of homogeneous Poisson point process. It was shown that one has (stretched) exponential concentration of the passage time $T_n$ from $0$ to $n\mathbf{e}_1$ about its mean on scale $\sqrt{n}$, and this was used to show the bound $μn \leq \mathbb{E}T_n \leq μn + C\sqrt{n} (\log n)^a$ for $a,C>0$ on the discrepancy between the expected passage time and its deterministic approximation $μ= \lim_n \frac{\mathbb{E}T_n}{n}$. In this p…
We study a dependent site percolation model on the $n$-dimensional Euclidean lattice where, instead of single sites, entire hyperplanes are removed independently at random. We extend the results about Bernoulli line percolation showing that the model undergoes a non-trivial phase transition and proving the existence of a transition from exponential to power-law decay within some regions of the subcritical phase.
We study a general class of percolation models in Euclidean space including long-range percolation, scale-free percolation, the weight-dependent random connection model and several other previously investigated models. Our focus is on the weak decay regime, in which inter-cluster long-range connection probabilities fall off polynomially with small exponent, and for which we establish several structural properties. Chief among them are the continuity of the bond percolation function and the transience of infinite clusters.
We consider long-range percolation in dimension $d\geq 1$, where distinct sites $x$ and $y$ are connected with probability $p_{x,y}\in[0,1]$. Assuming that $p_{x,y}$ is translation invariant and that $p_{x,y}=\|x-y\|^{-s+o(1)}$ with $s>2d$, we show that the graph distance is at least linear with the Euclidean distance.
We introduce a new correlated percolation model on the $d$-dimensional lattice $\mathbb{Z}^d$ called the random length worms model. Assume given a probability distribution on the set of positive integers (the length distribution) and $v \in (0,\infty)$ (the intensity parameter). From each site of $\mathbb{Z}^d$ we start $\mathrm{POI}(v)$ independent simple random walks with this length distribution. We investigate the connectivity properties of the set $\mathcal{S}^v$ of sites visited by this cloud of random walks. It is easy to show that if the second moment of the length distribution is fini…
We consider the internal diffusion limited aggregation (IDLA) process on the infinite cluster in supercritical Bernoulli bond percolation on Euclidean lattices. It is shown that the process on the cluster behaves like it does on the Euclidean lattice, in that the aggregate covers all the vertices in a Euclidean ball around the origin, such that the ratio of vertices in this ball to the total number of particles sent out approaches one almost surely.
We study the asymptotic behavior the exit times of random walk from Euclidean balls around the origin of the incipient infinite cluster in a manner inspired by [26]. We do this by obtaining bounds on the effective resistance between the origin and the boundary of these Euclidean balls. We show that the geometric properties of long-range percolation clusters are significantly different from those of finite-range clusters. We also study the behavior of random walk on the backbone of the IIC and we prove that the Alexander-Orbach conjecture holds for the incipient infinite cluster in high dimensi…
We study the time constant $μ(e_{1})$ in first passage percolation on $\mathbb Z^{d}$ as a function of the dimension. We prove that if the passage times have finite mean, $$\lim_{d \to \infty} \frac{μ(e_{1}) d}{\log d} = \frac{1}{2a},$$ where $a \in [0,\infty]$ is a constant that depends only on the behavior of the distribution of the passage times at $0$. For the same class of distributions, we also prove that the limit shape is not an Euclidean ball, nor a $d$-dimensional cube or diamond, provided that $d$ is large enough.
We obtain Gaussian upper and lower bounds on the transition density q_t(x,y) of the continuous time simple random walk on a supercritical percolation cluster C_{\infty} in the Euclidean lattice. The bounds, analogous to Aronsen's bounds for uniformly elliptic divergence form diffusions, hold with constants c_i depending only on p (the percolation probability) and d. The irregular nature of the medium means that the bound for q_t(x,\cdot) holds only for t\ge S_x(ω), where the constant S_x(ω) depends on the percolation configuration ω.
The metric $D_α(q,q')$ on the set $Q$ of particle locations of a homogeneous Poisson process on $R^d$, defined as the infimum of $(\sum_i |q_i - q_{i+1}|^α)^{1/α}$ over sequences in $Q$ starting with $q$ and ending with $q'$ (where $| . |$ denotes Euclidean distance) has nontrivial geodesics when $α> 1$. The cases $1 <α< \infty$ are the Euclidean first-passage percolation (FPP) models introduced earlier by the authors while the geodesics in the case $α= \infty$ are exactly the paths from the Euclidean minimal spanning trees/forests of Aldous and Steele. We compare and contrast results and conj…
We study percolation on the hierarchical lattice of order $N$ where the probability of connection between two points separated by distance $k$ is of the form $c_k/N^{k(1+δ)},\; δ>-1$. Since the distance is an ultrametric, there are significant differences with percolation on the Euclidean lattice. There are two non-critical regimes: $δ<1$, where percolation occurs, and $δ>1$, where it does not occur. In the critical case, $δ=1$, we use an approach in the spirit of the renormalization group method of statistical physics and connectivity results of Erdős-Renyi random graphs play a key role. We f…
Motivated by an application in wireless telecommunication networks, we consider a two-type continuum-percolation problem involving a homogeneous Poisson point process of users and a stationary and ergodic point process of base stations. Starting from a randomly chosen point of the Poisson point process, we investigate distribution of the minimum number of hops that are needed to reach some point of the second point process. In the supercritical regime of continuum percolation, we use the close relationship between Euclidean and chemical distance to identify the distributional limit of the resc…
This is the second, and last paper in which we address the behavior of oriented first passage percolation on the hypercube in the limit of large dimensions. We prove here that the extremal process converges to a Cox process with exponential intensity. This entails, in particular, that the first passage time converges weakly to a random shift of the Gumbel distribution. The random shift, which has an explicit, universal distribution related to modified Bessel functions of the second kind, is the sole manifestation of correlations ensuing from the geometry of Euclidean space in infinite dimensio…
We study a random perturbation of the Euclidean plane, and show that it is unlikely that the distance-minimizing path between the two points can be extended into an infinite distance-minimizing path. More precisely, we study a large class of planar first-passage percolation models and show that the probability that a given site is visited by an infinite geodesic starting at the origin tends to zero uniformly with the distance. In particular, this show that the collection of infinite geodesics starting at the origin covers a negligible fraction of the plane. This provides the first progress on …
A collection of spherical obstacles in the ball in Euclidean space is said to be avoidable for Brownian motion if there is a positive probability that Brownian motion diffusing from some point in the ball will avoid all the obstacles and reach the boundary of the ball. The centres of the spherical obstacles are generated according to a Poisson point process while the radius of an obstacle is a deterministic function depending only on the distance from the obstacle's centre to the centre of the ball. Lundh has given the name percolation diffusion to this process if avoidable configurations are …
We consider the random walk on supercritical percolation clusters in the d-dimensional Euclidean lattice. Previous papers have obtained Gaussian heat kernel bounds, and a.s. invariance principles for this process. We show how this information leads to a parabolic Harnack inequality, a local limit theorem and estimates on the Green's function.
In this note, we describe some of the progress recently made on questions regarding the chemical distance in two-dimensional critical percolation by the author, J. Hanson, and P. Sosoe [6, 7]. It is expected that the distance between points in critical percolation clusters scales as $\|\cdot \|^{1+s}$, where $\|\cdot \|$ is the Euclidean distance and $s>0$. First, we review previous work of Aizenman-Burchard and Morrow-Zhang, which together establish a version of $0 < s \leq 1/3$. The main results of our work are in the direction of proving upper bounds on $s$, answering in [6] a question from…
Let $\{Y_{\mathfrak{B}}(x)\,:\,x\in\mathfrak{B}\}$ be a discrete Gaussian free field in a two-dimensional box $\mathfrak{B}$ of side length $S$ with Dirichlet boundary conditions. We study Liouville first-passage percolation: the shortest-path metric in which each vertex $x$ is given a weight of $e^{γY_{\mathfrak{B}}(x)}$ for some $γ>0$. We show that for sufficiently small but fixed $γ>0$, for any sequence of scales $\{S_{k}\}$ there exists a subsequence along which the appropriately scaled and interpolated Liouville FPP metric converges in the Gromov--Hausdorff sense to a random metric on the…
The incipient infinite cluster (IIC) measure is the percolation measure at criticality conditioned on the cluster of the origin to be infinite. Using the lace expansion, we construct the IIC measure for high-dimensional percolation models in three different ways, extending previous work by the second author and Jarai. We show that each construction yields the same measure, indicating that the IIC is a robust object. Furthermore, our constructions apply to spread-out versions of both finite-range and long-range percolation models. We also obtain estimates on structural properties of the IIC, su…
In this paper we provide general conditions on a one parameter family of random infinite subsets of Z^d to contain a unique infinite connected component for which the chemical distances are comparable to the Euclidean distances, focusing primarily on models with long-range correlations. Our results are in the spirit of those by Antal and Pisztora proved for Bernoulli percolation. We also prove a shape theorem for balls in the chemical distance under such conditions. Our general statements give novel results about the structure of the infinite connected component of the vacant set of random int…
We study existence of percolation in the hierarchical group of order $N$, which is an ultrametric space, and transience and recurrence of random walks on the percolation clusters. The connection probability on the hierarchical group for two points separated by distance $k$ is of the form $c_k/N^{k(1+δ)}, δ>-1$, with $c_k=C_0+C_1\log k+C_2k^α$, non-negative constants $C_0, C_1, C_2$, and $α>0$. Percolation was proved in Dawson and Gorostiza (2013) for $δ<1$, and for the critical case, $δ=1,C_2>0$, with $α>2$. In this paper we improve the result for the critical case by showing percolation for $…
Many real-world networks exhibit the so-called small-world phenomenon: their typical distances are much smaller than their sizes. One mathematical model for this phenomenon is a long-range percolation graph on a $d$-dimensional box $\{0, 1, \cdots, N\}^d$, in which edges are independently added between far-away sites with probability falling off as a power of the Euclidean distance. A natural question is how the resulting diameter of the box of size $N$, measured in graph-theoretical distance, scales with $N$. This question has been intensely studied in the past and the answer depends on the e…
In this work, we study a new model for continuum line-of-sight percolation in a random environment driven by the Poisson-Voronoi tessellation in the $d$-dimensional Euclidean space. The edges (one-dimensional facets, or simply 1-facets) of this tessellation are the support of a Cox point process, while the vertices (zero-dimensional facets or simply 0-facets) are the support of a Bernoulli point process. Taking the superposition $Z$ of these two processes, two points of $Z$ are linked by an edge if and only if they are sufficiently close and located on the same edge (1-facet) of the supporting…
We study first-passage percolation through related optimization problems over paths of restricted length. The path length variable is in duality with a shift of the weights. This puts into a convex duality framework old observations about the convergence of the normalized Euclidean length of geodesics due to Hammersley and Welsh, Smythe and Wierman, and Kesten, and leads to new results about geodesic length and the regularity of the shape function as a function of the weight shift. For points far enough away from the origin, the ratio of the geodesic length and the $\ell^1$ distance to the end…
We study the asymptotic growth of the diameter of a graph obtained by adding sparse "long" edges to a square box in $\Z^d$. We focus on the cases when an edge between $x$ and $y$ is added with probability decaying with the Euclidean distance as $|x-y|^{-s+o(1)}$ when $|x-y|\to\infty$. For $s\in(d,2d)$ we show that the graph diameter for the graph reduced to a box of side $L$ scales like $(\log L)^{Δ+o(1)}$ where $Δ^{-1}:=\log_2(2d/s)$. In particular, the diameter grows about as fast as the typical graph distance between two vertices at distance $L$. We also show that a ball of radius $r$ in th…
We investigate the problem of disseminating broadcast messages in wireless networks with time-varying links from a percolation-based perspective. Using a model of wireless networks based on random geometric graphs with dynamic on-off links, we show that the delay for disseminating broadcast information exhibits two behavioral regimes, corresponding to the phase transition of the underlying network connectivity. When the dynamic network is in the subcritical phase, ignoring propagation delays, the delay scales linearly with the Euclidean distance between the sender and the receiver. When the dy…
Given a planar continuum Gaussian free field $h^{\mathcal U}$ in a domain $\mathcal U$ with Dirichlet boundary condition and any $δ>0$, we let $\{h_δ^{\mathcal U}(v): v\in \mathcal U\}$ be a real-valued smooth Gaussian process where $h_δ^{\mathcal U}(v)$ is the average of $h^{\mathcal U}$ along a circle of radius $δ$ with center $v$. For $γ> 0$, we study the Liouville first passage percolation (in scale $δ$), i.e., the shortest path distance in $\mathcal U$ where the weight of each path $P$ is given by $\int_P \mathrm{e}^{γh_δ^{\mathcal U}(z)} |dz|$. We show that the distance between two typic…

Internal Diffusion Limited Aggregation (IDLA) is a model that describes the growth of a random aggregate of particles from the inside out. Shellef proved that IDLA processes on supercritical percolation clusters of integer-lattices fill Euclidean balls, with high probability. In this article, we complete the picture and prove a limit-shape theorem for IDLA on such percolation clusters, by providing the corresponding upper bound. The technique to prove upper bounds is new and robust: it only requires the existence of a "good" lower bound. Specifically, this way of proving upper bounds on IDLA c…
We study constrained percolation models on planar lattices including the $[m,4,n,4]$ lattice and the square tilings of the hyperbolic plane, satisfying certain local constraints on faces of degree 4, and investigate the existence of infinite clusters. The constrained percolation models on these lattices are closely related to Ising models and XOR Ising models on regular tilings of the Euclidean plane or the hyperbolic plane. In particular, we obtain a complete picture of the number of infinite "$+$" and "$-$" clusters of the ferromagnetic Ising model with the free boundary condition on a verte…
Liouville first passage percolation (LFPP) with parameter $ξ>0$ is the family of random distance functions $\{D_h^ε\}_{ε>0}$ on the plane obtained by integrating $e^{ξh_ε}$ along paths, where $h_ε$ for $ε>0$ is a smooth mollification of the planar Gaussian free field. Previous work by Ding-Dubédat-Dunlap-Falconet and Gwynne-Miller has shown that there is a critical value $ξ_{\mathrm{crit}} > 0$ such that for $ξ< ξ_{\mathrm{crit}}$, LFPP converges under appropriate re-scaling to a random metric on the plane which induces the same topology as the Euclidean metric (the so-called $γ$-\emph{Liouvil…
We study phase transition and percolation at criticality for three random graph models on the plane, viz., the homogeneous and inhomogeneous enhanced random connection models (RCM) and the Poisson stick model. These models are built on a homogeneous Poisson point process $\mathcal{P}_λ$ in $\mathbb{R}^2$ of intensity $λ$. In the homogenous RCM, the vertices at $x,y$ are connected with probability $g(|x-y|)$, independent of everything else, where $g:[0,\infty) \to [0,1]$ and $| \cdot |$ is the Euclidean norm. In the inhomogenous version of the model, points of $\mathcal{P}_λ$ are endowed with w…
We apply a variation on the methods of Duminil-Copin, Raoufi, and Tassion to establish a new differential inequality applying to both Bernoulli percolation and the Fortuin-Kasteleyn random cluster model. This differential inequality has a similar form to that derived for Bernoulli percolation by Menshikov but with the important difference that it describes the distribution of the volume of a cluster rather than of its radius. We apply this differential inequality to prove the following: The critical exponent inequalities $γ\leq δ-1$ and $Δ\leq γ+1$ hold for percolation and the random cluster m…
We study the behavior of the random walk in a continuum independent long-range percolation model, in which two given vertices $x$ and $y$ are connected with probability that asymptotically behaves like $|x-y|^{-α}$ with $α>d$, where $d$ denotes the dimension of the underlying Euclidean space. More precisely, focus is on the random connection model in which the vertex set is given by the realization of a homogeneous Poisson point process. We show that this random graph exhibits the same properties as classical discrete long-range percolation models studied in [3] with regard to recurrence and t…
We investigate the weighted scale-free percolation (SFPW) model on $\mathbb Z^d$. In the SFPW model, the vertices of $\mathbb Z^d$ are assigned i.i.d. weights $(W_x)_{x\in \mathbb Z^d}$, following a power-law distribution with tail exponent $τ>1$. Conditioned on the collection of weights, the edges $(x,y)_{x, y \in \mathbb Z^d}$ are present independently with probability that a Poisson random variable with parameter $λW_x W_y/(\|x-y\|)^α$ is at least one, for some $α, λ>0$, and where $\|\cdot \|$ denotes the Euclidean distance. After the graph is constructed this way, we assign independent and…
We show that random walk on the incipient infinite cluster (IIC) of two-dimensional critical percolation is subdiffusive in the chemical distance (i.e., in the intrinsic graph metric). Kesten (1986) famously showed that this is true for the Euclidean distance, but it is known that the chemical distance is typically asymptotically larger. More generally, we show that subdiffusivity in the chemical distance holds for stationary random graphs of polynomial volume growth, as long as there is a multi-scale way of covering the graph so that "deep patches" have "thin backbones". Our estimates are qua…
It is a central prediction of renormalisation group theory that the critical behaviours of many statistical mechanics models on Euclidean lattices depend only on the dimension and not on the specific choice of lattice. We investigate the extent to which this universality continues to hold beyond the Euclidean setting, taking as case studies Bernoulli bond percolation and lattice trees. We present strong numerical evidence that the critical exponents governing these models on transitive graphs of polynomial volume growth depend only on the volume-growth dimension of the graph and not on any oth…
We establish quantitative homogenization, large-scale regularity and Liouville results for the random conductance model on a supercritical (Bernoulli bond) percolation cluster. The results are also new in the case that the conductivity is constant on the cluster. The argument passes through a series of renormalization steps: first, we use standard percolation results to find a large scale above which the geometry of the percolation cluster behaves (in a sense made precise) like that of Euclidean space. Then, following the work of Barlow, we find a succession of larger scales on which certain f…
The Euclidean Directed Spanning Forest is a random forest in $\mathbb{R}^d$ introduced by Baccelli and Bordenave in 2007 and we introduce and study here the analogous tree in the hyperbolic space. The topological properties of the Euclidean DSF have been stated for $d=2$ and conjectured for $d \ge 3$ (see further): it should be a tree for $d \in \{2,3\}$ and a countable union of disjoint trees for $d \ge 4$. Moreover, it should not contain bi-infinite branches whatever the dimension $d$. In this paper, we construct the Hyperbolic Directed Spanning Forest (HDSF) and we give a complete descripti…
For $γ\in (0,2)$, we define a weak $γ$-Liouville quantum gravity (LQG) metric to be a function $h\mapsto D_h$ which takes in an instance of the planar Gaussian free field (GFF) and outputs a metric on the plane satisfying a certain list of natural axioms. We show that these axioms are satisfied for any subsequential limits of Liouville first passage percolation. Such subsequential limits were proven to exist by Ding-Dubédat-Dunlap-Falconet (2019). It is also known that these axioms are satisfied for the $\sqrt{8/3}$-LQG metric constructed by Miller and Sheffield (2013-2016). For any weak $γ$-L…
