In this paper, we study the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of nonlinearly normal embedding of rational surfaces. Let $X$ be a rational surface and let $L \in {Pic}X$ be a very ample line bundle. For a very ample subsystem $V \subset H^0 (X,L)$ of codimension $t \geq 1$, if $X \hookrightarrow ¶(V)$ satisfies Property $N^S_1$, then ${Reg} (X) \leq t+2$\cite{KP}. Thus we investigate Property $N^S_1$ of noncomplete linear systems on X. And our main result is about a condition of the position of $V$ in $H^0 (X,L)$ such that $X \hookrightarrow ¶(V)$ satisfies Property $N^S_1$. Indeed it is related to the geometry of a smooth rational curve of $X$. Also we apply our result to $¶^2$ and Hirzebruch surfaces.
The rational homology groups of the matching complexes are closely related to the syzygies of the Veronese embeddings. In this paper we will prove the vanishing of certain rational homology groups of matching complexes, thus proving that the third Veronese embeddings satisfy the property $N_6$. This settles the Ottaviani-Paoletti conjecture for third Veronese embeddings. This result is optimal since $ν_3(\PP^n)$ does not satisfy the property $N_7$ for $n\ge 2$ as shown by Ottaviani-Paoletti in \cite{OP}.
Smooth Schubert varieties in rational homogeneous manifolds of Picard number 1 are horospherical varieties. We characterize standard embeddings of smooth Schubert varieties in rational homogeneous manifolds of Picard number 1 by means of varieties of minimal rational tangents. In particular, we mainly consider nonhomogeneous smooth Schubert varieties in symplectic Grassmannians and in the 20-dimensional $F_4$-homogeneous manifold associated to a short simple root.
Let $V$ be a regular neighborhood of a negative chain of $2$-spheres (i.e. exceptional divisor of a cyclic quotient singularity), and let $B_{p,q}$ be a rational homology ball which is smoothly embedded in $V$. Assume that the embedding is simple, i.e. the corresponding rational blow-up can be obtained by just a sequence of ordinary blow-ups from $V$. Then we show that this simple embedding comes from the semi-stable minimal model program (MMP) for $3$-dimensional complex algebraic varieties under certain mild conditions. That is, one can find all simply embedded $B_{p,q}$'s in $V$ via a finit…
Let $(Y,A)$ be a smooth rational surface or a possibly singular toric surface with ample divisor $A$. We show that a family of ECH-based, algebro-geometric invariants $c^{\text{alg}}_k(Y,A)$ proposed by Wormleighton obstruct symplectic embeddings into $Y$. Precisely, if $(X,ω_X)$ is a $4$-dimensional star-shaped domain and $ω_Y$ is a symplectic form Poincaré dual to $[A]$ then \[(X,ω_X)\text{ embeds into }(Y,ω_Y)\text{ symplectically } \implies c^{\text{ECH}}_k(X,ω_X) \le c^{\text{alg}}_k(Y,A)\] We give three applications to toric embedding problems: (1) these obstructions are sharp for embedd…
The Milnor fibre of a $\mathbb{Q}$-Gorenstein smoothing of a Wahl singularity is a rational homology ball $B_{p,q}$. For a canonically polarised surface of general type $X$, it is known that there are bounds on the number $p$ for which $B_{p,q}$ admits a symplectic embedding into $X$. In this paper, we give a recipe to construct unbounded sequences of symplectically embedded $B_{p,q}$ into surfaces of general type equipped with non-canonical symplectic forms. Ultimately, these symplectic embeddings come from Mori's theory of flips, but we give an interpretation in terms of almost toric structu…
We analyze morphisms from pointed curves to K3 surfaces with a distinguished rational curve, such that the marked points are taken to the rational curve, perhaps with specified cross ratios. This builds on work of Mukai and others characterizing embeddings of curves into K3 surfaces via non-abelian Brill-Noether theory. Our study leads naturally to enumerative problems, which we solve in several specific cases. These have applications to the existence of sections of del Pezzo fibrations with prescribed invariants.
Given an affine rational complexity-one $T$-variety $X$, we construct an explicit embedding of $X$ in affine space $\mathbb{A}^n$. We show that this embedding is well-poised, that is, every initial ideal of $I_X$ is a prime ideal, and determine the tropicalization of $X$. We then study valuations of the coordinate ring $R_X$ of $X$ which respect the torus action, showing that for full rank valuations, the natural generators of $R_X$ form a Khovanskii basis. This allows us to determine Newton-Okounkov bodies of rational projective complexity-one $T$-varieties, partially recovering (and generali…
Motivated by the embedding problem of canonical models in small codimension, we extend Severi's double point formula to the case of surfaces with rational double points, and we give more general double point formulae for varieties with isolated singularities. A concrete application is for surfaces with geometric genus $p_g=5$: the canonical model is embedded in $\mathbb{P}^4$ if and only if we have a complete intersection of type $(2,4)$ or $(3,3)$.
Let G be a reductive group over an algebraically closed field of characteristic p>0. We study properties of embeddings of spherical homogeneous G-spaces. We look at Frobenius splittings, canonical or by a (p-1)-th power, compatible with certain subvarieties. We also look at cohomology vanishing and show the existence of rational G-equivariant resolutions by toroidal embeddings. We show that the class of homogeneous spaces for which our results hold contains the symmetric homogeneous spaces in characteristic not 2 and is closed under parabolic induction.
For $x$ an element of a field other than $0$ or $1$, we compute the order $n$ Massey products $$\langle (1-x)^{-1}, x^{-1}, \ldots, x^{-1}, (1-x)^{-1} \rangle$$ of $n-2$ factors of $x^{-1}$ and two factors of $(1-x)^{-1}$ by embedding $\mathbb{P}^1 - \{0,1,\infty\}$ into its Picard variety and constructing $\operatorname{Gal}(k^s/k)$ equivariant maps from $π_1$ applied to this embedding to unipotent matrix groups. This method produces obstructions to $π_1$-sections of $\mathbb{P}^1 - \{0,1,\infty\}$, partial computations of obstructions of Jordan Ellenberg, and also computes the Massey product…
Let $\hat{L}$ be the projective completion of an ample line bundle $L$ over $D$, a smooth projective manifold. Hwang-Singer \cite{HwangS} have constructed complete CSCK metric on $\hat{L}\backslash D$. When the corresponding \kahler form is in the cohomology class of a rational divisor $A$ and when $L$ has negative CSCK metric on $D$, we show that the Kodaira embedding induced by orthonormal basis of the Bergman space of $kA$ is almost balanced. As a corollary, $(\hat{L},D,cA,0)$ is K-semistable.
We propose a refined but natural notion of toric degenerations that respect a given embedding and show that within this framework a Gorenstein Fano variety can only be degenerated to a Gorenstein Fano toric variety if it is embedded via its anticanonical embedding. This also gives a precise criterion for reflexive polytopes to appear, which might be required for applications in mirror symmetry. For the proof of this statement we will study polytopes whose polar dual is a lattice polytope. As a byproduct we generalize a connection between the number of lattice points in a rational convex polyto…
Let (C,0) be a reduced curve germ in a normal surface singularity (X,0). The main goal is to recover the delta invariant of the abstract curve (C,0) from the topology of the embedding. We give explicit formulae whenever (C,0) is minimal generic and (X,0) is rational (as a continuation of previous works of the authors). Additionally we prove that if (X,0) is a quotient singularity, then the delta invariant of (C,0) only admits the values r-1 or r, where r is the number or irreducible components of (C,0). (r-1 realizes the extremal lower bound, valid only for `ordinary r-tuples'.)
In this work, we study the Kähler-Ricci flow on rational homogeneous varieties exploring the interplay between projective algebraic geometry and representation theory which underlies the classical Borel-Weil theorem. By using elements of representation theory of semisimple Lie groups and Lie algebras, we give an explicit description for all solutions of the homogeneous Kähler-Ricci flow on rational homogeneous varieties. This description enables us to compute explicitly the maximal existence time for any homogeneous solution and obtain explicit upper and lower bounds for several geometric quan…
Let $\mathbb{P}^1$ and $(X,q)$ denote, respectively, the projective line and a fixed elliptic curve marked at its origin, both defined over an algebraically closed field $\mathbb{K}$ of arbitrary characteristic $\emph{\textbf{p}} \neq2$. We will consider all finite separable marked morphisms $π:(Γ,p)\rightarrow (X,q)$, such that $Γ$ is a degree-$2$ cover of $ \mathbb{P}^1$, ramified at the smooth point $p \in Γ$. Canonically associated to $π$ there is the Abel (rational) embedding of $Γ$ into its \emph{generalized Jacobian}, $A_p: Γ\to Jac\,Γ$, and $\{0\} \subsetneq V^1_{Γ,p}...\subsetneq V ^g…
