A notion of a coring extension is defined and it is related to the existence of an additive functor between comodule categories that factorises through forgetful functors. This correspondence between coring extensions and factorisable functors is illustrated by functors between categories of descent data. A category in which objects are corings and morphisms are coring extensions is also introduced.
In this note we consider different versions of coinduction functors between categories of comodules for corings induced by a morphism of corings. In particular we introduce a new version of the coinduction functor in the case of locally projective corings as a composition of suitable ``Trace'' and ``Hom'' functors and show how to derive it from a more general coinduction functor between categories of type $σ\lbrack M].$ In special cases (e.g. the corings morphism is part of a morphism of measuring $α$-pairings or the corings have the same base ring), a version of our functor is shown to be iso…
To a B-coring and a (B,A)-bimodule that is finitely generated and projective as a right A-module an A-coring is associated. This new coring is termed a base ring extension of a coring by a module. We study how the properties of a bimodule such as separability and the Frobenius properties are reflected in the induced base ring extension coring. Any bimodule that is finitely generated and projective on one side, together with a map of corings over the same base ring, lead to the notion of a module-morphism, which extends the notion of a morphism of corings (over different base rings). A module-m…
Let $\Cc$ and $\Dd$ be two corings over a ring $A$ and $\Cc\stackrelλ{\longrightarrow}\Dd$ be a morphism of corings. We investigate the situation when the associated induced ("corestriction of scalars") functor $\Mm^\Cc\longrightarrow \Mm^\Dd$ is a Frobenius functor, and call these morphisms Frobenius extensions of corings. The characterization theorem generalizes notions such as Frobenius corings and is applied to several situations; in particular, provided some (general enough) flatness conditions hold, the notion proves to be dual to that of Frobenius extensions of rings (algebras). Several…
Partial Galois extensions were recently introduced by Dokuchaev, Ferrero and Paques. We introduce partial Galois extensions for noncommutative rings, using the theory of Galois corings. We associate a Morita context to a partial action on a ring.
The notion of a Frobenius coring is introduced, and it is shown that any such coring produces a tower of Frobenius corings and Frobenius extensions. This establishes a one-to-one correspondence between Frobenius corings and extensions.
We introduce a monoidal category of corings using two different notions of corings morphisms. The first one is the (right) coring extensions recently introduced by T. Brzeziński in [2], and the anther is the usual notion of morphisms defined in [5] by J. Gómez-Torrecillas.
A Morita context is constructed for any comodule of a coring and, more generally, for an $L$-$\cC$ bicomodule $Σ$ for a pure coring extension $(\cD:L)$ of $(\cC:A)$. It is related to a 2-object subcategory of the category of $k$-linear functors $\Mm^\Cc\to\Mm^\Dd$. Strictness of the Morita context is shown to imply the Galois property of $Σ$ as a $\cC$-comodule and a Weak Structure Theorem. Sufficient conditions are found also for a Strong Structure Theorem to hold. Cleft property of an $L$-$\cC$ bicomodule $Σ$ -- implying strictness of the associated Morita context -- is introduced. It is sho…
We investigate Frobenius pairs between categories of comodules over rather general corings. We particularize to the case of the adjoint pair of functors associated to a morphism of corings over different base rings, which leads to a reasonable notion of Frobenius coring extension. When applied to corings stemming from entwining structures, we obtain new results in this setting.
In this note we study Morita contexts and Galois extensions for corings. For a coring $\QTR{cal}{C}$ over a (not necessarily commutative) ground ring $A$ we give equivalent conditions for $\QTR{cal}{M}^{\QTR{cal}{C}}$ to satisfy the weak. resp. the strong structure theorem. We also characterize the so called \QTR{em}{cleft}$C$\QTR{em}{-Galois extensions} over commutative rings. Our approach is similar to that of Y. Doi and A. Masuoka in their work on (cleft) $H$-Galois extensions.
We extend Masuoka's Theorem [11] concerning the isomorphism between the group of invertible bimodules in a non-commutative ring extension and the group of automorphisms of the associated Sweedler's canonical coring, to the class of finite comatrix corings introduced in [6].
We investigate adjoint and Frobenius pairs between categories of comodules over rather general corings. We particularize to the case of the adjoint pair of functors associated to a morphism of corings over different base rings, which leads to a reasonable notion of Frobenius coring extension. When applied to corings stemming from entwining structures, we obtain new results in this setting and in graded ring theory.
Given a coalgebra $C$ over a commutative ring $R,$ we show that $C$ can be considered as a (not necessarily counital) $C^{\ast op}$-coring. Moreover, we show that this coring has a left (right) counity if and only if $C$ is coseparable as an $R$-coalgebra.

We study the cyclic module ${}_SR$ for a ring extension $A \| B$ with centralizer $R$ and bimodule endomorphism ring $S = End {}_BA_B$. We show that if $A \| B$ is an H-separable Hopf subalgebra, then $B$ is a normal Hopf subalgebra of $A$. We observe from math.RA/0107064 and math.RA/0108067 depth two in the role of noncommutative normality (as in field theory) in a depth two separable Frobenius characterization of irreducible semisimple-Hopf-Galois extensions. We prove that a depth two extension has a Galois $A$-coring structure on $A ø_R T$ where $T$ is the right $R$-bialgebroid dual to $S$.
The Chern-Galois theory is developed for corings or coalgebras over non-commutative rings. As the first step the notion of an entwined extension as an extension of algebras within a bijective entwining structure over a non-commutative ring is introduced. A strong connection for an entwined extension is defined and it is shown to be closely related to the Galois property and to the equivariant projectivity of the extension. A generalisation of the Doi theorem on total integrals in the framework of entwining structures over a non-commutative ring is obtained, and the bearing of strong connection…
We study co-Frobenius and more generally Quasi-co-Frobenius corings over arbitrary baserings and over PF baserings in particular. We generalize some results about (Quasi-) co-Frobenius coalgebras to the case of non-commutative base rings and give several new characterisations for co-Frobenius and Quasi-co-Frobenius corings, some of them are new even in the coalgebra situation. We construct Morita contexts to study Frobenius properies of corings and a second kind of Morita contexts to study adjoint pairs. Comparing both Morita contexts, we obtain our main result that characterises (Quasi-) co-F…
Given a ring $A$ and an $A$-coring $\cC$ we study when the forgetful functor from the category of right $\cC$-comodules to the category of right $A$-modules and its right adjoint $-\otimes_A\cC$ are separable. We then proceed to study when the induction functor $-\otimes_A\cC$ is also the left adjoint of the forgetful functor. This question is closely related to the problem when $A\to {}_A{\rm Hom}(\cC,A)$ is a Frobenius extension. We introduce the notion of a Galois coring and analyse when the tensor functor over the subring of $A$ fixed under the coaction of $\cC$ is an equivalence. We also …
We investigate functors between abelian categories having a left adjoint and a right adjoint that are \emph{similar} (these functors are called \emph{quasi-Frobenius functors}). We introduce the notion of a \emph{quasi-Frobenius bimodule} and give a characterization of these bimodules in terms of quasi-Frobenius functors. Some applications to corings and graded rings are presented. In particular, the concept of quasi-Frobenius homomorphism of corings is introduced. Finally, a version of the endomorphism ring Theorem for quasi-Frobenius extensions in terms of corings is obtained.
Galois comodules of a coring are studied. The conditions for a simple comodule to be a Galois comodule are found. A special class of Galois comodules termed principal comodules is introduced. These are defined as Galois comodules that are projective over their comodule endomorphism rings. A complete description of principal comodules in the case a background ring is a field is found. In particular it is shown that a (finitely generated and projective) right comodule of an $A$-coring $\mathcal C$ is principal provided a lifting of the canonical map is a split epimorphism in the category of left…
Generalising the notion of Galois corings, Galois comodules were introduced as comodules $P$ over an $A$-coring $\cC$ for which $P_A$ is finitely generated and projective and the evaluation map $μ_\cC:\Hom^\cC(P,\cC)\ot_SP\to \cC$ is an isomorphism (of corings) where $S=\End^\cC(P)$. It was observed that for such comodules the functors $\Hom_A(P,-)\ot_SP$ and $-\ot_A\cC$ from the category of right $A$-modules to the category of right $\cC$-comodules are isomorphic. In this note we call modules $P$ with this property {\em Galois comodules} without requiring $P_A$ to be finitely generated and pr…
An extension B\subset A of algebras over a commutative ring k is an H-extension for an L-bialgebroid H if A is an H-comodule algebra and B is the subalgebra of its coinvariants. It is H-Galois if the canonical map A\otimes_B A\to A\otimes_L H is an isomorphism or, equivalently, if the canonical coring (A\otimes_L H:A) is a Galois coring. In the case of a Hopf algebroid H=(H_L,H_R,S) any H_R-extension is shown to be also an H_L-extension. If the antipode is bijective then also the notions of H_R-Galois extensions and of H_L-Galois extensions are proven to coincide. Results about bijective entwi…
We give a bicategorical version of the main result of A. Masuoka ({Corings and invertible bimodules,} {\em Tsukuba J. Math.} \textbf{13} (1989), 353--362) which proposes a non-commutative version of the fact that for a faithfully flat extension of commutative rings $R \subseteq S$, the relative Picard group $Pic(S/R)$ is isomorphic to the Amitsur 1--cohomology group $H^1(S/R,U)$ with coefficients in the units functor $U$.
Properties of (most general) non-commutative torsors or A-B torsors are analysed. Starting with pre-torsors it is shown that they are equivalent to a certain class of Galois extensions of algebras by corings. It is shown that a class of faithfully flat pre-torsors induces equivalences between categories of comodules of associated corings. It is then proven that A-B torsors correspond to monoidal functors (and, under some additional conditions, equivalences) between categories of comodules of bialgebroids.
A pair of adjoint functors $(F,G)$ is called a Frobenius pair of the second type if $G$ is a left adjoint of $βFα$ for some category equivalences $α$ and $β$. Frobenius ring extensions of the second kind provide examples of Frobenius pairs of the second kind. We study Frobenius pairs of the second kind between categories of modules, comodules, and comodules over a coring. We also show that a finitely generated projective Hopf algebra over a commutative ring is always a Frobenius extension of the second kind, and prove that the integral spaces of the Hopf algebra and its dual are isomorphic.
The category $_{A}\mathbb{S}_{A}$ of bisemimodules over a semialgebra $A,$ with the so called Takahashi's tensor product $-\boxtimes_{A}-,$ is semimonoidal but not monoidal. Although not a unit in $_{A}\mathbb{S}%_{A},$ the base semialgebra $A$ has properties of a semiunit (in a sense which we clarify in this note). Motivated by this interesting example, we investigate semiunital semimonoidal categories $(\mathcal{V}%, \bullet, I)$ as a framework for studying notions like semimonoids (semicomonoids) as well as a notion of monads (comonads) which we call $\mathbb{J}$-monads ($\mathbb{J}$-% como…
We prove a universal characterization of Hopf algebras among cocommutative bialgebras over a field: a cocommutative bialgebra is a Hopf algebra precisely when every split extension over it admits a join decomposition. We also explain why this result cannot be extended to a non-cocommutative setting.
We introduce a notion of depth three tower of three rings C < B < A as a useful generalization of depth two ring extension. If A = End B_C and B | C is a Frobenius extension, this also captures the notion of depth three for a Frobenius extension in math.RA/0107064 and math.RA/0108067 such that if B | C is depth three, then A | C is depth two (cf. math.QA/0001020). If A, B and C correspond to a tower of subgroups G > H > K via the group algebra over a fixed base ring, the depth three condition is the condition that subgroup K has normal closure K^G contained in H. For a depth three tower of rin…
Depth three and finite depth are notions known for subfactors via diagrams and Frobenius extensions of rings via centralizers in endomorphism towers. From the point of view of depth two ring extensions, we provide a clear definition of depth three for a tower of three rings C < B < A. If A = B_C and B | C is a Frobenius extension, this captures the notion of depth three for a Frobenius extension. For example we provide an algebraic proof that if B | C is depth three, then A | C is depth two. If A, B and C correspond to a tower of subgroups G > H > K via the group algebra over a fixed base ring…
We propose the study and description of the structure of complex Lie algebras with nilradical a nilpotent Lie algebra of type 2 by using sl2(C)-representation theory. Our results will be applied to review the classification given in [1] (J. Geometry and Physics, 2011) of the Lie algebras with nilradical the quasiclassical algebra L5;3. A non-Lie algebra has been erroneously included in this classification. The 5-dimensional Lie algebra L5;3 is a free nilpotent algebra of type 2 and it is one of two free nilpotent algebras admitting an invariant metric. According to [, Ok98] quasiclassical alge…
In this note we reduce certain proofs in \cite{KS, Karl, AMA} to depth two quasibases from one side only. This minimalistic approach leads to a characterization of Galois extensions for finite projective bialgebroids without the Frobenius extension property: a proper algebra extension is a left $T$-Galois extension for some right finite projective left bialgebroid $T$ over some algebra $R$ if and only if it is of left depth two and left balanced. Exchanging left and right in this statement, we have also a characterization of right Galois extensions for left finite projective right bialgebroids…
We extend some recent results on the differentiability of torsion theories. In particular, we generalize the concept of $(α, β)$-derivation to $(α, β)$-higher derivation and demonstrate that a filter of a hereditary torsion theory that is invariant for $α$ and $β$ is $(α, β)$-higher derivation invariant. As a consequence, any higher derivation can be extended from a module to its module of quotients. Then, we show that any higher derivation extended to a module of quotients extends also to a module of quotients with respect to a larger torsion theory in such a way that these extensions agree. …
In the note some construction of Lie algebras is introduced. It is proved that the construction has the same property as a well known wreath product of groups [1]: Any extension of groups can be embedded into their wreath product [2].
