Let $C$ be an algebraic curve of genus $g$. A coherent system on $C$ consists of a pair $(E,V)$, where $E$ is an algebraic vector bundle over $C$ of rank $n$ and degree $d$ and $V$ is a subspace of dimension $k$ of the space of sections of $E$. The stability of the coherent system depends on a parameter $α$. We study the geometry of the moduli space of coherent systems for different values of $α$ when $k\leq n$ and the variation of the moduli spaces when we vary $α$. As a consequence, for sufficiently large $α$, we compute the Picard groups and the first and second homotopy groups of the moduli spaces of coherent systems in almost all cases, describe the moduli space for the case $k=n-1$ explicitly, and give the Poincaré polynomials for the case $k=n-2$.
We develop a moduli theory of algebraic varieties and pairs of non-negative Kodaira dimension. We define stable minimal models and construct their projective coarse moduli spaces under certain natural conditions. This can be applied to a wide range of moduli problems in algebraic geometry.
In this paper, we study the geometric invariant theory on algebraic spaces, and construct te moduli spaces of $\mathcal{H}$-semistable sheaves on projective Deligne-Mumford stacks over algebraic spaces $S$. We prove that this moduli space is projective over $S$ as an algebraic space.
In this expository note, we offer an overview of the relationship between Hodge-theoretic and geometric compactifications of moduli spaces of algebraic varieties.
We discuss selected topics on the topology of moduli spaces of curves and maps, emphasizing their relation with Gromov--Witten theory and integrable systems.
In this paper we consider moduli spaces of coherent systems on an elliptic curve. We compute their Hodge polynomials and determine their birational types in some cases. Moreover we prove that certain moduli spaces of coherent systems are isomorphic. This last result uses the Fourier-Mukai transform of coherent systems introduced by Hernández Ruiperez and Tejero Prieto.
Demailly's conjecture, which is a consequence of the Green-Griffiths-Lang conjecture on varieties of general type, states that an algebraically hyperbolic complex projective variety is Kobayashi hyperbolic. Our aim is to provide evidence for Demailly's conjecture by verifying several predictions it makes. We first define what an algebraically hyperbolic projective variety is, extending Demailly's definition to (not necessarily smooth) projective varieties over an arbitrary algebraically closed field of characteristic zero, and we prove that this property is stable under extensions of algebraic…
We examine a moduli problem for real and quaternionic vector bundles on a smooth complex projective curve with a fixed real structure, and we give a gauge-theoretic construction of moduli spaces for semi-stable such bundles with fixed topological type. These spaces embed onto connected subsets of real points inside a complex projective variety. We relate our point of view to previous work by Biswas, Huisman and Hurtubise (arxiv:0901.3071), and we use this to study the Galois action induced on moduli varieties of stable holomorphic bundles on a complex curve by a given real structure on the cur…
We compute the first, second, third, and fifth rational cohomology groups of the moduli space of stable n-pointed genus g curves, for all g and n, using (mostly) algebro-geometric techniques.
We give a remark on the wall crossing behavior of perverse coherent sheaves on a blow-up and stability condition constructed by Toda. We also explain the wall crossing of twisted stability in terms of stability condition.
This is mostly* a non-technical exposition of the joint work arXiv:1212.0373 with Caporaso and Payne. Topics include: Moduli of Riemann surfaces / algebraic curves; Deligne-Mumford compactification; Dual graphs and the combinatorics of the compactification; Tropical curves and their moduli; Non-archimedean geometry and comparison. * Maybe the last section is technical.
This paper surveys some applications of moduli theory to issues concerning the distribution of rational points on algebraic varieties. It will appear on the proceedings of the Fano Conference.
We give a short appreciation of Mumford's work on the moduli of varieties by putting it into historical context. By reviewing earlier works we highlight the innovations introduced by Mumford. Then we discuss recent developments whose origins can be traced back to Mumford's ideas.
In this paper we construct a tropical moduli space parametrizing roots of divisors on tropical curves. We study the relation between this space and the skeleton of Jarvis moduli space of nets of limit roots on stable curves. We show that the combinatorics of the moduli space of tropical roots is governed by the poset of flows, a poset parametrizing certain flows on graphs.
Fix a smooth projective curve over a field of characteristic zero and a finite set of punctures. Let G be a connected linear algebraic group. We prove that the moduli of G-bundles with logarithmic connections having fixed residue classes at the punctures is an algebraic stack of finite type.
In recent years a series of remarkable advances in tropical geometry and in non-archimedean geometry have brought new insights to the moduli theory of algebraic curves and their Jacobians. The goal of this survey, an expanded version of my talks at the 2015 AMS symposium in algebraic geometry and at AGNES 2016, is to present some of the results in this area.
We construct the moduli space for equivalence classes of n-pointed tropical curves of genus g, together with its compactification given by weighted tropical curves, and establish some of its basic topological properties. We compare it to the moduli spaces of smooth and stable algebraic curves, from the combinatorial, the topological, and the Teichmüller point of view. The paper is written in an expository style, and it generalizes some results contained in sections 4-6 of arXiv:1001.2815v3.
Here we investigate some birational properties of two collections of moduli spaces, namely moduli spaces of (pointed) stable curves and of (pointed) spin curves. In particular, we focus on vanishings of Hodge numbers of type (p,0) and on computations of the Kodaira dimension. Our methods are purely algebraic geometric and rely on an induction argument on the number of marked points and the genus of the curves (cf. mathAG/9803001).
We analyze Weierstrass cycles and tautological rings in moduli space of smooth algebraic curves and in moduli spaces of integral algebraic curves with embedded disks with special attention to moduli spaces of curves having genus $\leq 6$. In particular, we show that our general formula gives a good estimate for the dimension of Weierstrass cycles for lower genera.
We study the geometry of the moduli stack of vector bundles of fixed rank and degree over an algebraic curve by introducing a filtration made of open substacks build from $(k, l)$-stable vector bundles. $(k, l)$-stability was introduced by Narasimhan and Ramanan to study the geometry of the coarse moduli space of stable bundles. We will exhibit the stacky picture and analyse the geometric and cohomological properties of the moduli stacks of $(k, l)$-stable vector bundles. For particular pairs $(k, l) $ of integers we also show that these moduli stacks admit coarse moduli spaces and we discuss …
It is proved that the number of deformation types of complex structures on a fixed oriented smooth four-manifold can be arbitrarily large. The considered examples are locally simple abelian covers of rational surfaces.
This article is based in part on lecture notes prepared for the summer school "The Geometry, Topology and Physics of Moduli Spaces of Higgs Bundles" at the Institute for Mathematical Sciences at the National University of Singapore in July of 2014. The aim is to provide a brief introduction to algebraic stacks, and then to give several constructions of the moduli stack of Higgs bundles on algebraic curves. The first construction is via a "bootstrap" method from the algebraic stack of vector bundles on an algebraic curve. This construction is motivated in part by Nitsure's GIT construction of a…
In order to study wall crossing formula of Donaldson type invariants on the blown-up plane, Nakajima-Yoshioka constructed a sequence of blow-up/blow-down diagrams connecting the moduli space of torsion free framed sheaves on projective plane, and that on its blow-up. In this paper, we prove that Nakajima-Yoshioka's diagram realizes the minimal model program. Furthermore, we obtain a fully-faithful embedding between the derived categories of these moduli spaces.
For an abelian or a projective K3 surface $X$ over an algebraically closed field $k$, consider the moduli space $\splcpx_{X/k}\uet$ of the objects $E$ in $D^b(\mathrm{Coh}(X))$ satisfying $\Ext^{-1}_X(E,E)=0$ and $\Hom(E,E)\cong k$. Then we can prove that $\splcpx_{X/k}\uet$ is smooth and has a symplectic structure.
Let $C$ be an algebraic curve of genus $g\ge2$. We study the geometry of the moduli space of coherent systems for $0<d\le2n$. We show that these spaces are irreducible whenever they are non-empty and obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for non-emptiness.
We study the spaces of stable real and quaternionic vector bundles on a real algebraic curve. The basic relationship is established with unitary representations of an extension Z/2 by the fundamental group. By comparison with the space of real or quaternionic connections, some of the basic topological invariants of these spaces are calculated.
In this paper we study the relationship between three compactifications of the moduli space of Hermitian-Yang-Mills connections on a fixed Hermitian vector bundle over a projective algebraic manifold of arbitrary dimension. Via the Donaldson-Uhlenbeck-Yau theorem, this space is analytically isomorphic to the moduli space of stable holomorphic vector bundles, and as such it admits an algebraic compactification by Gieseker-Maruyama semistable torsion-free sheaves. A recent construction due to the first and third authors gives another compactification as a moduli space of slope semistable sheaves…
Let $X$ be a smooth complex elliptic curve and $G$ a connected reductive affine algebraic group defined over $\mathbb C$. Let ${\mathcal M}_X(G)$ denote the moduli space of topologically trivial algebraic $G$--connections on $X$, that is, pairs of the form $(E_G\, , D)$, where $E_G$ is a topologically trivial algebraic principal $G$--bundle on $X$, and $D$ is an algebraic connection on $E_G$. We prove that ${\mathcal M}_X(G)$ does not admit any nonconstant algebraic function while being biholomorphic to an affine variety.
We prove that the forgetful morphism from the moduli space of orthogonal bundles to the moduli space of vector bundles over a smooth curve is an embedding. Our proof relies on an explicit description of a set of generators for the invariants on the representation space of a quiver under the action of a product of classical groups.
Let $C$ be a curve of genus $g$. A coherent system on $C$ is a pair $(E,V)$, where $E$ is a finite rank vector bundle on $C$ and $V$ is a linear subspace of the space of global sections of $E$. The type of a coherent system $(E,V)$ is a triple $(n,d,k)$, where $n$ is the rank of $E$, $d$ is the degree of $E$ and $k$ is the dimension of $V$. The notion of stability for a coherent system $(E,V)$ differs from the stability of the bundle $E$ and depends on the choice of a real parameter $α$. The moduli space of $α$-stable coherent systems of type $(n,d,k)$ has an expected dimension $β= β(n,d,k)$ w…
These lecture notes consist of an introduction to moduli spaces in algebraic geometry, with a strong emphasis placed on examples related to the theory of quiver representations. The goal is to provide the background necessary to understand the construction of the moduli spaces of stable and semistable quiver representations due to King, Nakajima's quiver varieties, as well as some 'quiver versions' of existing moduli spaces of algebra-geometric objects.
The aim of this paper is to construct the parabolic version of the Donaldson--Uhlenbeck compactification for the moduli space of parabolic stable bundles on an algenraic surface with parabolic structures along a divisor with normal crossing singularities. We prove the non--emptiness of the moduli space of parabolic stable bundles of rank 2 and also prove the existence of components with smooth points.
We introduce a method of constructing the virtual cycle of any scheme associated with a tangent-obstruction complex. We apply this method to constructing the virtual moduli cycle of the moduli of stable maps from n-pointed genus g curves to any smooth projective variety. As an application, we give an algebraic definition of GW-invariants for any smooth projective variety.
We develop homotopical algebraic geometry (see math.AG/0207028) in the special context where the base symmetric monoidal model category is the category S of spectra, i.e. what might be called, after Waldhausen, ``brave new algebraic geometry''. We discuss various model topologies on the model category of commutative algebras in S, the associated theories of geometric S-stacks (a geometric S-stack being an analog of Artin notion of algebraic stack in Algebraic Geometry), and finally show how to define global moduli spaces of associative ring spectra structures and a moduli space related to topo…
We study the birational geometry of moduli spaces of semistable sheaves on the projective plane via Bridgeland stability conditions. We show that the entire MMP of their moduli spaces can be run via wall-crossing. Via a description of the walls, we give a numerical description of their movable cones, along with its chamber decomposition corresponding to minimal models. As an application, we show that for primitive vectors, all birational models corresponding to open chambers in the movable cone are smooth and irreducible.
The moduli stacks of Calabi-Yau varieties are known to enjoy several hyperbolicity properties. The best results have so far been proven using sophisticated analytic tools such as complex Hodge theory. Although the situation is very different in positive characteristic (e.g. the moduli stack of principally polarized abelian varieties of dimension at least 2 contains rational curves), we explain in this note how one can prove many hyperbolicity results by reduction to positive characteristic, relying ultimately on the nonabelian Hodge theory in positive characteristic developed by Ogus and Volog…
We show the equivalence between two notions of log moduli stacks which appear in literatures. In particular, we generalize M.Olsson's theorem of representation of log algebraic stacks and answer a question posted by him (\cite{Ol4} 3.5.3). As an application, we obtain several fundamental results of algebraic log stacks which resemble to those in algebraic stacks.
Let $\MC$ be the moduli space of stable holomorphic vector bundles of rank 2 and fixed determinant of odd degree, over a smooth projective curve $C$. This paper identifies the algebraic cohomology ring $\HA^*(\MC)$, i.e. the subring of the rational cohomology ring $H^*(\MC;\QQ)$ spanned by the fundamental classes of algebraic cycles, in terms of the algebraic cohomology ring of the Jacobian $\JC$.

We construct coarse moduli spaces for `Brill-Noether pairs'. Such a pair consists of a torsion-free sheaf $E$ over an algebraic curve $X$ and a vector subspace $Λ$ of its space of sections $H^0(E)$. The construction works for an arbitrary singular curve $X$ of pure dimension and for all values of the positive rational parameter $α$ occurring in the stability condition. When $k<n$, we study the coherent systems that come from a BGN extension in which the quotient bundle is strictly semistable. In this case we describe a stratification of the moduli space of coherent systems. We also describe the strata as complements of determinantal varieties and we prove that these are irreducible and smooth. These descriptions allow us to compute the Hodge polynomials of this moduli space in some cases. In particular, we give explicit computations for the cases in which $(n,d,k)=(3,d,1)$ and $d$ is even, obtaining from them the usual Poincaré polynomials.
In this paper we construct the analogue of Dedekind eta-function on the moduli space of polarized CY manifolds. We prove that the L-two norm of eta is the regularized determinants of the Laplacians of the CY metric on (0,1) forms. We construct the analogue of the Baily-Borel Compactification of the moduli space of polarized CY and prove that it has the same properties as the Baily-Borel compactification of the locally symmetric Hermitian spaces. We proved that the compactification constructed in the paper is the minimal.
This is the second of series of papers studyig moduli spaces of a certain class of coherent sheaves, which we call stable perverse coherent sheaves, on the blow-up of a projective surface at a point. The followings are main results of this paper: a) We describe the wall-crossing between moduli spaces caused by twisting of the line bundle associated with the exceptional divisor. b) We give the formula for virtual Hodge numbers of moduli spaces of stable perverse coherent sheaves. Moreover we also give proofs of the followings which we observed in a special case in arXiv:0802.3120: c) The moduli…
Let X be a general smooth projective algebraic curve of genus g>1. We prove that the moduli space G(α:n,d,k) of $α$-stable coherent systems of type (n,d,k) over X is empty if k>n and the Brill-Noether number is negative. Moreover, if the Brill-Noether number is positive and <g and for some $α>0$, G(α:n,d,k) is non-empty G(α:n,d,k) is non-empty for all $α>0$ and G(α:n,d,k)= G(α':n,d,k) for all $α,α'>0$ and the generic element is generated.

We study the wall-crossing for moduli spaces of coherent systems of dimension one and order one on a smooth projective variety over the complex numbers. We compute the topological Euler characteristic of the moduli spaces in the particular case when the variety is a quadric surface, the first Chern class of the coherent systems is of the form (2,r) and the second Chern class is bounded from below by 3r + 1 and also by 4r - 8.
We connect the homotopy type of simplicial moduli spaces of algebraic structures to the cohomology of their deformation complexes. Then we prove that under several assumptions, mapping spaces of algebras over a monad in an appropriate diagram category form affine stacks in the sense of Toen-Vezzosi's homotopical algebraic geometry. This includes simplicial moduli spaces of algebraic structures over a given object (for instance a cochain complex). When these algebraic structures are parametrised by properads, the tangent complexes give the known cohomology theory for such structures and there i…
