The aim of this paper is to construct the parabolic version of the Donaldson--Uhlenbeck compactification for the moduli space of parabolic stable bundles on an algenraic surface with parabolic structures along a divisor with normal crossing singularities. We prove the non--emptiness of the moduli space of parabolic stable bundles of rank 2 and also prove the existence of components with smooth points.
Let $H$ be a semisimple algebraic group. We prove the semistable reduction theorem for $μ$--semistable principal $H$--bundles over a {\it smooth projective variety $X$} defined over the field $\bc$. When $X$ is a {\it smooth projective surface} and $H$ is simple, we construct the algebro--geometric Donaldson--Uhlenbeck compactification of the moduli space of $μ$--semistable principal $H$--bundles with fixed characteristic classes and describe its points. For large characteristic classes we show that the moduli space of $μ$--stable principal $H$--bundles is non--empty.
We determine the birational geometry of O'Grady's six dimensional example over the Donaldson-Uhlenbeck compactification, by looking at the locus of non-locally-free sheaves on the relevant moduli space.
In this paper, we first prove a Donaldson-Uhlenbeck-Yau theorem over projective normal varieties smooth in codimension two. As a consequence we deduce the polystability of (dual) tensor products of stable reflexive sheaves, and we give a new proof of the Bogomolov-Gieseker inequality, along with a precise characterization of the case of equality. This also improves several previously known algebro-geometric results on normalized tautological classes. We study the limiting behavior of semistable bundles over a degenerating family of projective normal varieties. In the case of a family of stable…
We study the natural Gieseker and Uhlenbeck compactifications of the rational Calogero-Moser phase space. The Gieseker compactification is smooth and provides a small resolution of the Uhlenbeck compactification. This allows computing the IC stalks of the Uhlenbeck compactification.
We give a definition of a functor compactifying the functor of bundles on a surfaces. Earlier different authors have defined similar spaces as either images under a morphism or a quotient by an equivalence relation. We use the technique of multiplicative functors to explain what kind of objects are parameterized by the points of this compactification.
In this article, we study the variation of the Gieseker and Uhlenbeck compactifications of the moduli spaces of Mumford-Takemoto stable vector bundles of rank 2 by changing polarizations. Some {\it canonical} rational morphisms among the Gieseker compactifications are proved to exist and their fibers are studied. As a consequence of studying the morphisms from the Gieseker compactifications to the Uhlebeck compactifications, we show that there is an everywhere-defined {\it canonical} algebraic map between two adjacent Uhlenbeck compactifications which restricts to the identity on some Zariski …
Let $(X,H)$ be a smooth, projective, polarized surface over $\mathbb{C}$, and let $v \in K_{\mathrm{num}}(X)$ be a class of positive rank. We prove that for certain Bridgeland stability conditions $σ= (\mathcal{A}, Z)$ "on the vertical wall" for $v$, the good moduli space $M^σ(v)$ parameterizing S-equivalence classes of $σ$-semistable objects of class $v$ in $\mathcal{A}$ is projective. Moreover, we construct a bijective morphism $M^{\mathrm{Uhl}}(v) \to M^σ(v)$ from the Uhlenbeck compactification of $μ$-stable vector bundles.
We survey recent progress in the study of moduli of vector bundles on higher-dimensional base manifolds. In particular, we discuss an algebro-geometric construction of an analogue for the Donaldson-Uhlenbeck compactification and explain how to use moduli spaces of quiver representations to show that Gieseker-Maruyama moduli spaces with respect to two different chosen polarisations are related via Thaddeus-flips through other "multi-Gieseker"-moduli spaces of sheaves. Moreover, as a new result, we show the existence of a natural morphism from a multi-Gieseker moduli space to the corresponding D…
The Hitchin-Kobayashi correspondence for vector bundles, established by Donaldson, Kobayashi, Luebke, Uhlenbeck and Yau, states that an indecomposable holomorphic vector bundle over a compact Kaehler manifold is stable in the sense of Takemoto-Mumford if and only if the vector bundle admits a Hermitian-Einstein metric. Its manifold analogue known as Yau's conjecture, which originated from Calabi's conjecture, asks whether ``stability'' and ``existence of extremal metrics'' for polarized manifolds are equivalent. In this note, the recent progress of this subject, by Donaldson, Tian and our grou…
In this paper we study the relationship between three compactifications of the moduli space of Hermitian-Yang-Mills connections on a fixed Hermitian vector bundle over a projective algebraic manifold of arbitrary dimension. Via the Donaldson-Uhlenbeck-Yau theorem, this space is analytically isomorphic to the moduli space of stable holomorphic vector bundles, and as such it admits an algebraic compactification by Gieseker-Maruyama semistable torsion-free sheaves. A recent construction due to the first and third authors gives another compactification as a moduli space of slope semistable sheaves…
Let $M^K_n$ be the moduli space of framed $K$-instantons over $S^4$ with instanton number $n$ when $K$ is a compact simple Lie group of classical type. Let $U^{K}_{n}$ be the Uhlenbeck partial compactification of $M^{K}_{n}$. A scheme structure on $U^{K}_{n}$ is endowed by Donaldson as an algebro-geometric Hamiltonian reduction of ADHM data. In this paper, for $K=SO(N,R)$, $N\ge5$, we prove that $U^{K}_{n}$ is an irreducible normal variety with smooth locus $M^{K}_{n}$. Hence, together with the author's previous result, the K-theoretic Nekrasov partition function for any simple classical group…
Let X be a P^1 scroll (a compactification of a line bundle L) over a complex surafce S and assume S has a global two form with zero loci a smooth curve C. The Donaldson Thomas invariants of X is shown to be zero if the curve class has is component on S not a multiple of [C]. For nonzero case, when the prime field insertion are above C, the invariant is shown to depend only on the analytic neighborhood of L in X.
This research announcement gives a brief report of the main results in our paper "PU(2) monopoles, I: Regularity, Uhlenbeck compactness, and transversality" (Journal of Differential Geometry, to appear). We describe the existence of perturbations for the PU(2) monopole equations, yielding both useful transversality properties and an Uhlenbeck compactification for this perturbed moduli space.
We prove the existence of perturbations for the PU(2) monopole equations, yielding transversality on the complement of the anti-self-dual or reducible solutions, and the existence of an Uhlenbeck compactification for the moduli space of solutions to these perturbed PU(2) monopole equations. In December 1994, V. Pidstrigach and A. Tyurin and then others proposed a method to prove Witten's conjecture concerning the relation between the Donaldson and Seiberg-Witten invariants of smooth four-manifolds. Their proposal uses a moduli space of solutions to the PU(2) monopole equations, which are a nat…
We prove generic regularity and Uhlenbeck-type compactification theorems for the moduli spaces of PU(2)-monopoles. Generic regularity is NOT obtained in the usual way (by applying Sard theorem to a smooth parameterized moduli space), since the parameterized moduli space can be a priori singular. We explain why, using the standard order 0-perturbations, one cannot get the smoothness of the parameterized moduli space. (The same difficulty arises in the case of ASD-Spin^c moduli spaces, so the definition of the Spin^c-polynomial invariants should be revised.) We show that the singular locus of th…
This paper describes how, in the case of algebraic surfaces, the well-known theorem of Donaldson-Uhlenbeck-Yau can be proved in a framework of generalized 'multiplier ideal sheaves', following the ideas of Siu. The key concept is that the destabilizing sheaf satisfies a differential inclusion relation. This relation is used, together with a complex Frobenius theorem for locally finitely generated subsheaves, to imply coherence of the destabilizing subsheaf.
Using quantum field-theoretic arguments, Witten has established a relation between the Donaldson and Seiberg-Witten invariants of smooth four-manifolds. In this survey article, we describe the program to prove this relation using a moduli space of PU(2) = SO(3) monopoles as a cobordism between the Donaldson moduli space of anti-self-dual SO(3) connections and moduli spaces of U(1) monopoles. We provide an overview of some of our transversality and Uhlenbeck compactness results for PU(2) monopoles, along with some of our calculations of Donaldson invariants in terms of Seiberg-Witten invariants…
The Gieseker-Uhlenbeck morphism maps the Gieseker moduli space of stable rank-2 sheaves on a smooth projective surface to the Uhlenbeck compactification, and is a generalization of the Hilbert-Chow morphism for Hilbert schemes of points. When the surface is the complex projective plane, we determine all the 1-point genus-0 Gromov-Witten invariants extremal with respect to the Gieseker-Uhlenbeck morphism. The main idea is to understand the virtual fundamental class of the moduli space of stable maps by studying the obstruction sheaf and using a meromorphic 2-form on the Gieseker moduli space.
Let $G$ be an almost simple simply connected group over $\BC$, and let $\Bun^a_G(\BP^2,\BP^1)$ be the moduli scheme of principal $G$-bundles on the projective plave $\BP^2$, of second Chern class $a$, trivialized along a line $\BP^1\subset \BP^2$. We define the Uhlenbeck compactification $\fU^a_G$ of $\Bun^a_G(\BP^2,\BP^1)$, which classifies, roughly, pairs $(\F_G,D)$, where $D$ is a 0-cycle on $\BA^2=\BP^2-\BP^1$ of degree $b$, and $\F_G$ is a point of $\Bun^{a-b}_G(\BP^2,\BP^1)$, for varying $b$. In addition, we calculate the stalks of the Intersection Cohomology sheaf of $\fU^a_G$. To do th…
We discuss some relations of moduli of sheaves on rational surfaces by using universal extensions. These are a generalization of Maruyama's method to construct Uhlenbeck compactification of moduli of vector bundles.
Braverman and Finkelberg recently proposed the geometric Satake correspondence for the affine Kac-Moody group $G_\aff$ [Braverman A., Finkelberg M., arXiv:0711.2083]. They conjecture that intersection cohomology sheaves on the Uhlenbeck compactification of the framed moduli space of $G_{\mathrm{cpt}}$-instantons on $\R^4/\Z_r$ correspond to weight spaces of representations of the Langlands dual group $G_\aff^\vee$ at level $r$. When $G = \SL(l)$, the Uhlenbeck compactification is the quiver variety of type $\algsl(r)_\aff$, and their conjecture follows from the author's earlier result and I. F…
We introduce the concept of Spin^G-structure in a SO-bundle, where $G\subset U(V)$ is a compact Lie group containing $-id_V$. We study and classify $Spin^G(4)$-structures on 4-manifolds, we introduce the G-Monopole equations associated with a $Spin^G$-structure. On Kaehler surfaces a Kobayashi-Hitchin correspondence can be proved for the corresponding moduli spaces. Using this complex geometric interpretation, we determine explicitely a moduli space of "PU(2)-Monopoles" on $¶^2$, we describe its Uhlenbeck compactification, as well as the Donaldson- and the abelian locus.
Two compactifications of the space of holomorphic maps of fixed degree from a compact Riemann surface to a Grassmannian are studied. It is shown that the Uhlenbeck compactification has the structure of a projective scheme and is dominated by the algebraic compactification arising as a Grothendieck Quot scheme. The latter may be embedded into the moduli space of solutions to a generalized version of the vortex equations studied by Bradlow. This gives an effective way of computing certain intersection numbers (known as Gromov invariants) on the space of holomorphic maps into Grassmannians. We ca…
An explicit description of the spectral data of stable U(n) vector bundles on elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau threefolds is given, extending previous work of Friedman, Morgan and Witten. The characteristic classes are computed and it is shown that part of the bundle cohomology vanishes. The stability and the dimension of the moduli space of the U(n) bundles are discussed. As an application, it is shown that the U(n) bundles are capable to solve the basic topological constraints imposed by heterotic string theory. Various explicit solutions of the Donaldson-Uhlenbeck-Yau equation are given. The…
This is the third installment in our series of articles (dg-ga/9712005, dg-ga/9710032) on the application of the PU(2) monopole equations to prove Witten's conjecture (hep-th/9411102) concerning the relation between the Donaldson and Seiberg-Witten invariants of smooth four-manifolds. The moduli space of solutions to the PU(2) monopole equations provides a noncompact cobordism between links of compact moduli spaces of U(1) monopoles of Seiberg-Witten type and the moduli space of anti-self-dual SO(3) connections, which appear as singularities in this larger moduli space. In this paper we prove …
This is the first part of two papers. In this part, we prove the blowup formulae for virtual Hodge polynomials of Gieseker moduli spaces of rank-2 stable sheaves and Uhlenbeck compactification spaces over algebraic surfaces. In particular, we verify the blowup formulae for the S-duality conjecture of Vafa-Witten, i.e. the blowup formulae for the Euler numbers of instanton moduli spaces over algebraic surfaces.
Let $X$ be a compact connected Kähler manifold equipped with an anti-holomorphic involution which is compatible with the Kähler structure. Let $G$ be a connected complex reductive affine algebraic group equipped with a real form $σ_G$. We define pseudo-real principal $G$--bundles on $X$; these are generalizations of real algebraic principal $G$--bundles over a real algebraic variety. Next we define stable, semistable and polystable pseudo-real principal $G$--bundles. Their relationships with the usual stable, semistable and polystable principal $G$--bundles are investigated. We then prove that…
We study BPS jumping loci, or the subloci in moduli spaces of supersymmetric string vacua where BPS states come into existence discontinuously. This phenomenon is distinct from wall-crossing. We argue that these loci should be thought of as special cycles in the sense of Noether-Lefschetz loci or special Shimura subvarieties, which are indeed examples of BPS jumping loci for certain string compactifications. We use the Hodge-elliptic genus as an informative tool, suggesting that our work can be extended to understand the jumping behavior of motivic Donaldson-Thomas invariants.
We resolve pathological wall-crossing phenomena for moduli spaces of sheaves on higher-dimensional base manifolds. This is achieved by considering slope-semistability with respect to movable curves rather than divisors. Moreover, given a projective n-fold and a curve C that arises as the complete intersection of n-1 very ample divisors, we construct a modular compactification of the moduli space of vector bundles that are slope-stable with respect to C. Our construction generalises the algebro-geometric construction of the Donaldson-Uhlenbeck compactification by Joseph Le Potier and Jun Li. Fu…
We consider moduli stacks of Bridgeland semistable objects that previously had only set-theoretic identifications with Uhlenbeck compactification spaces. On a K3 surface $X$, we give examples where such a moduli stack is isomorphic to a moduli stack of slope semistable locally free sheaves on the Fourier-Mukai partner $\hat{X}$. This yields a morphism from the stack of Bridgeland semistable objects to a projective scheme, which induces an injection on closed points. It also allows us to extend a theorem of Bruzzo-Maciocia on Hilbert schemes to a statement on moduli of complexes.
We show a few basic results about moduli spaces of semistable modules over Lie algebroids. The first result shows that such moduli spaces exist for relative projective morphisms of noetherian schemes, removing some earlier constraints. The second result proves general separatedness Langton type theorem for such moduli spaces. More precisely, we prove S-completness of some moduli stacks of semistable modules. In some special cases this result identifies closed points of the moduli space of Gieseker semistable sheaves on a projective scheme and of the Donaldson--Uhlenbeck compactification of the…
Let $X$ be a compact Calabi-Yau 3-fold, and write $\mathcal M,\bar{\mathcal M}$ for the moduli stacks of objects in coh$(X),D^b$coh$(X)$. There are natural line bundles $K_{\mathcal M}\to\mathcal M$, $K_{\bar{\mathcal M}}\to\bar{\mathcal M}$, analogues of canonical bundles. Orientation data on $\mathcal M,\bar{\mathcal M}$ is an isomorphism class of square root line bundles $K_{\mathcal M}^{1/2},K_{\bar{\mathcal M}}^{1/2}$, satisfying a compatibility condition on the stack of short exact sequences. It was introduced by Kontsevich and Soibelman arXiv:1006.270 in their theory of motivic Donaldso…
For the derived category of bounded complexes of sheaves on a smooth projective surface, Bridgeland and Arcara-Bertram constructed Bridgeland stability conditions $(Z_m, \mathcal P_m)$ parametrized by $m \in (0, +\infty)$. In this paper, we show that the set of mini-walls in $(0, +\infty)$ of a fixed numerical type is locally finite. In addition, we strengthen a result of Bayer by proving that the moduli of polynomial Bridgeland semistable objects of a fixed numerical type coincides with the moduli of $(Z_m, \mathcal P_m)$-semistable objects whenever $m$ is larger than a universal constant dep…
We present the simplest non-abelian version of Seiberg-Witten theory: Quaternionic monopoles. These monopoles are associated with Spin^h(4)-structures on 4-manifolds and form finite-dimensional moduli spaces. On a Kahler surface the quaternionic monopole equations decouple and lead to the projective vortex equation for holomorphic pairs. This vortex equation comes from a moment map and gives rise to a new complex-geometric stability concept. The moduli spaces of quaternionic monopoles on Kahler surfaces have two closed subspaces, both naturally isomorphic with moduli spaces of canonically stab…
We prove that the moduli space of solutions to the PU(2) monopole equations is a smooth manifold of the expected dimension for simple, generic parameters such as (and including) the Riemannian metric on the given four-manifold. In a previous article, dg-ga/9710032, we proved transversality using an extension of the holonomy-perturbation methods of Donaldson, Floer, and Taubes, together with the existence of an Uhlenbeck compactification for the perturbed moduli space. However, it remained an important and interesting question to see whether there were simpler, more intrinsic alternatives to th…
We consider the compactification M(atrix) theory on a Riemann surface Sigma of genus g>1. A natural generalization of the case of the torus leads to construct a projective unitary representation of pi_1(Σ), realized on the Hilbert space of square integrable functions on the upper half--plane. A uniquely determined gauge connection, which in turn defines a gauged sl_2(R) algebra, provides the central extension. This has a geometric interpretation as the gauge length of a geodesic triangle, and corresponds to a 2-cocycle of the 2nd Hochschild cohomology group of the Fuchsian group uniformizing S…
Raynaud and Gruson showed that there is a reasonable algebro-geometric notion of family of discrete (infinite-dimensional) vector spaces. The author introduces a notion of family of Tate spaces ("Tate" means "locally linearly compact") and claims that it is local. The definition takes in account that the K_{-1} of a ring is not necessarily zero. However, we prove that K_{-1} always vanishes after Nisnevich sheafification. As a discrete counterpart of families of Tate spaces, we introduce the notion of almost projective module. We discuss the notions of dimension torsor and determinant gerbe of…
