If for any $k$ the $k$-th coefficient of a polynomial I(G;x) is equal to the number of stable sets of cardinality $k$ in the graph $G$, then it is called the independence polynomial of $G$ (Gutman and Harary, 1983). Let $a$ be the size of a maximum stable set. Alavi, Malde, Schwenk and Erdos (1987)conjectured that I(T,x) is unimodal for any tree T, while, in general, they proved that for any permutation $p$ of {1,2,...,a} there is a graph such that s_{p(1)}<s_{p(2)}<...<s_{p(a)}. Brown, Dilcher and Nowakowski (2000) conjectured that I(G;x) is unimodal for any well-covered graph. Michael and Traves (2002) provided examples of well-covered graphs with non-unimodal independence polynomials. They proposed the "roller-coaster" conjecture: for a well-covered graph, the subsequence (s_{a/2},s_{a/2+1},...,s_{a}) is unconstrained in the sense of Alavi et al. The conjecture of Brown et al. is still open for very well-covered graphs. In this paper we prove that s_{(2a-1)/3}>=...>=s_{a-1}>=s_{a} are valid for any (a) bipartite graph $G$; (b) quasi-regularizable graph $G$ on $2a$ vertices. In particular, we infer that this is true for (a) trees, thus doing a step in an attempt to prove Alavi et al.' conjecture; (b) very well-covered graphs. Consequently, for this case, the unconstrained subsequence appearing in the roller-coaster conjecture can be shorten to (s_{a/2},s_{a/2+1},...,s_{(2a-1)/3}). We also show that the independence polynomial of a very well-covered graph $G$ is unimodal for a<10, and is log-concave whenever a<6.
The independence polynomial $i(G,x)$ of a graph $G$ is the generating function of the numbers of independent sets of each size. A graph of order $n$ is very well-covered if every maximal independent set has size $n/2$. Levit and Mandrescu conjectured that the independence polynomial of every very well-covered graph is unimodal (that is, the sequence of coefficients is nondecreasing, then nonincreasing). In this article we show that every graph is embeddable as an induced subgraph of a very well-covered graph whose independence polynomial is unimodal, by considering the location of the roots of…
A graph $G$ is well-covered if all its maximal stable sets have the same size, denoted by alpha(G) (M. D. Plummer, 1970). If for any $k$ the $k$-th coefficient of a polynomial I(G;x) is equal to the number of stable sets of cardinality $k$ in graph $G$, then it is called the independence polynomial of $G$ (Gutman and Harary, 1983). J. I. Brown, K. Dilcher and R. J. Nowakowski (2000) conjectured that I(G;x) is unimodal (that is, there exists an index $k$ such that the part of the sequence of coefficients from the first to $k$-th is non-decreasing while the other part of coefficients is non-incr…
The number of stable sets of cardinality $k$ in graph $G$ is the $k$-th coefficient of the independence polynomial of $G$ (I. Gutman and F. Harary, 1983). In 1990, Y. O. Hamidoune proved that for any claw-free graph, its independence polynomial is unimodal, i.e., there exists a coefficient $k$ such that the part of the sequence of coefficients from the first to $k$-th is non-decreasing while the second part of coefficients is non-increasing. Y. Alavi, P. J. Malde, A. J. Schwenk and P. Erdös (1987) asked whether for trees (or perhaps forests) the independence polynomial is unimodal. J. I. Brown…
Although the Unimodality Conjecture holds for some certain classes of cubical polytopes (e.g. cubes, capped cubical polytopes, neighborly cubical polytopes), it fails for cubical polytopes in general. A 12-dimensional cubical polytope with non-unimodal face vector is constructed by using capping operations over a neighborly cubical polytope with 2 to the power 131 vertices. For cubical polytopes, the Unimodality Conjecture is proved for dimensions less than 11. The first one-third of the face vector of a cubical polytope is increasing and its last one-third is decreasing in any dimension.
We establish a conjecture of Graham and Lovász that the (normalized) coefficients of the distance characteristic polynomial of a tree are unimodal; we also prove they are log-concave.
The $e$-positivity conjecture and the $e$-unimodality conjecture of chromatic quasisymmetric functions are proved for some classes of natural unit interval orders. Recently, J. Shareshian and M. Wachs introduced chromatic quasisymmetric functions as a refinement of Stanley's chromatic symmetric functions and conjectured the $e$-positivity and the $e$-unimodality of these functions. The $e$-positivity of chromatic quasisymmetric functions implies the $e$-positivity of corresponding chromatic symmetric functions, and our work resolves Stanley's conjecture on chromatic symmetric functions of $(3+…
In the study of Kostka numbers and Catalan numbers, Kirillov posed a unimodality conjecture for the rectangular Narayana polynomials. We prove that the rectangular Narayana polynomials have only real zeros, and thereby confirm Kirillov's unimodality conjecture with the help of Newton's inequality. By using an equidistribution property between descent numbers and ascent numbers on ballot paths due to Sulanke and a bijection between lattice words and standard Young tableaux, we show that the rectangular Narayana polynomial is equal to the descent generating function on standard Young tableaux of…
Many sequences of binomial coefficients share various unimodality properties. In this paper we consider the unimodality problem of a sequence of binomial coefficients located in a ray or a transversal of the Pascal triangle. Our results give in particular an affirmative answer to a conjecture of Belbachir et al which asserts that such a sequence of binomial coefficients must be unimodal. We also propose two more general conjectures.
Let $P(x)$ be a polynomial of degree $m$, with nonnegative and non-decreasing coefficients. We settle the conjecture that for any positive real number $d$, the coefficients of $P(x+d)$ form a unimodal sequence, of which the special case $d$ being a positive integer has already been asserted in a previous work. Further, we explore the location of modes of $P(x+d)$ and present some sufficient conditions on $m$ and $d$ for which $P(x+d)$ has the unique mode $\lceil{m-d\over d+1}\rceil$.
We generalize the notion of graded posets to what we call sign-graded (labeled) posets. We prove that the $W$-polynomial of a sign-graded poset is symmetric and unimodal. This extends a recent result of Reiner and Welker who proved it for graded posets by associating a simplicial polytopal sphere to each graded poset $P$. By proving that the $W$-polynomials of sign-graded posets has the right sign at -1, we are able to prove the Charney-Davis Conjecture for these spheres (whenever they are flag).
In this paper we study unimodality problems for the independence polynomial of a graph, including unimodality, log-concavity and reality of zeros. We establish recurrence relations and give factorizations of independence polynomials for certain classes of graphs. As applications we settle some unimodality conjectures and problems.
We show how lattice paths and the reflection principle can be used to give easy proofs of unimodality results. In particular, we give a "one-line" combinatorial proof of the unimodality of the binomial coefficients. Other examples include products of binomial coefficients, polynomials related to the Legendre polynomials, and a result connected to a conjecture of Simion.
We prove two conjectures of Shareshian and Wachs about Eulerian quasisymmetric functions and polynomials. The first states that the cycle type Eulerian quasisymmetric function $Q_{λ,j}$ is Schur-positive, and moreover that the sequence $Q_{λ,j}$ as $j$ varies is Schur-unimodal. The second conjecture, which we prove using the first, states that the cycle type $(q,p)$-Eulerian polynomial \newline $A_λ^{\maj,\des,\exc}(q,p,q^{-1}t)$ is $t$-unimodal.
A polynomial $A(q)=\sum_{i=0}^n a_iq^i$ is said to be unimodal if $a_0\le a_1\le \cdots \le a_k\ge a_{k+1} \ge \cdots \ge a_n$. We investigate the unimodality of rational $q$-Catalan polynomials, which is defined to be $C_{m,n}(q)= \frac{1}{[n+m]} \left[ m+n \atop n\right]$ for a coprime pair of positive integers $(m,n)$. We conjecture that they are unimodal with respect to parity, or equivalently, $(1+q)C_{m+n}(q)$ is unimodal. By using generating functions and the constant term method, we verify our conjecture for $m\le 5$ in a straightforward way.
Defant, Engen, and Miller defined a refinement of Lassalle's sequence $A_{k+1}$ by considering uniquely sorted permutations of length $2k+1$ whose first element is $\ell$. They showed that each such sequence is symmetric in $\ell$ and conjectured that these sequences are unimodal. We prove that the sequences are unimodal.
The k-Young lattice Y^k is a weak subposet of the Young lattice containing partitions whose first part is bounded by an integer k>0. The Y^k poset was introduced in connection with generalized Schur functions and later shown to be isomorphic to the weak order on the quotient of the affine symmetric group by a maximal parabolic subgroup. We prove a number of properties for $Y^k$ including that the covering relation is preserved when elements are translated by rectangular partitions with hook-length $k$. We highlight the order ideal generated by an $m\times n$ rectangular shape. This order ideal…
We prove the unimodality of the Ehrhart $δ$-polynomial of the chain polytope of the zig-zag poset, which was conjectured by Kirillov. First, based on a result due to Stanley, we show that this polynomial coincides with the $W$-polynomial for the zig-zag poset with some natural labeling. Then, its unimodality immediately follows from a result of Gasharov, which states that the $W$-polynomials of naturally labeled graded posets of rank $1$ or $2$ are unimodal.
Let alpha = (a,b,...) be a composition. Consider the associated poset F(alpha), called a fence, whose covering relations are x_1 < x_2 < ... < x_{a+1} > x_{a+2} > ... > x_{a+b+1} < x_{a+b+2} < ... . We study the associated distributive lattice L(alpha) consisting of all lower order ideals of F(alpha). These lattices are important in the theory of cluster algebras and their rank generating functions can be used to define q-analogues of rational numbers. In particular, we make progress on a recent conjecture of Morier-Genoud and Ovsienko that L(alpha) is rank unimodal. We show that if one of the…
Dyson's rank function and the Andrews--Garvan crank function famously give combinatorial witnesses for Ramanujan's partition function congruences modulo 5, 7, and 11. While these functions can be used to show that the corresponding sets of partitions split into 5, 7, or 11 equally sized sets, one may ask how to make the resulting bijections between partitions organized by rank or crank combinatorially explicit. Stanton recently made conjectures which aim to uncover a deeper combinatorial structure along these lines, where it turns out that minor modifications of the rank and crank are required…
A polynomial is said to be unimodal if its coefficients are non-decreasing and then non-increasing. The domination polynomial of a graph $G$ is the generating function of the number of domination sets of each cardinality in $G$, and its coefficients have been conjectured to be unimodal. In this paper we will show the domination polynomial of paths, cycles and complete multipartite graphs are unimodal, and that the domination polynomial of almost every graph is unimodal with mode $ \lceil \frac{n}{2}\rceil $.
Recently, much attention has been given to various inequalities among partition functions. For example, Nicolas, {and later DeSavlvo--Pak,} proved that $p(n)$ is eventually log-concave, and Ji--Zang showed that the cranks are eventually unimodal. This has led to a flurry of recent activity generalizing such results in different directions. At the same time, Stanton recently made deep conjectures on the positivity of certain polynomials associated to ranks and cranks of partitions, with the ultimate goal of pointing the way to ``deeper'' structure refining ranks and cranks. These have been show…
Let $Q_n(z)$ be the polynomials associated with the Nekrasov-Okounkov formula $$\sum_{n\geq 1} Q_n(z) q^n := \prod_{m = 1}^\infty (1 - q^m)^{-z - 1}.$$ In this paper we partially answer a conjecture of Heim and Neuhauser, which asks if $Q_n(z)$ is unimodal, or stronger, log-concave for all $n \geq 1$. Through a new recursive formula, we show that if $A_{n,k}$ is the coefficient of $z^k$ in $Q_n(z)$, then $A_{n,k}$ is log-concave in $k$ for $k \ll n^{1/6}/\log n$ and monotonically decreasing for $k \gg \sqrt{n}\log n$. We also propose a conjecture that can potentially close the gap.
An interesting, and still wide open, conjecture of Reiner and Stanton predicts that certain "strange" symmetric differences of $q$-binomial coefficients are always nonnegative and unimodal. We extend their conjecture to a broader, and perhaps more natural, framework, by conjecturing that, for each $k\ge 5$, the polynomials $$f(k,m,b)(q)=\binom{m}{k}_q-q^{\frac{k(m-b)}{2}+b-2k+2}\cdot\binom{b}{k-2}_q$$ are nonnegative and unimodal for all $m\gg_k 0$ and $b\le \frac{km-4k+4}{k-2}$ such that $kb\equiv km$ (mod 2), with the only exception of $b=\frac{km-4k+2}{k-2}$ when this is an integer. Using t…
Given two graphs $G$ and $H$, assume that $\mathscr{C}=\{C_1,C_2,\ldots, C_q\}$ is a clique cover of $G$ and $U$ is a subset of $V(H)$. We introduce a new graph operation called the clique cover product, denoted by $G^{\mathscr{C}}\star H^U$, as follows: for each clique $C_i\in \mathscr{C}$, add a copy of the graph $H$ and join every vertex of $C_i$ to every vertex of $U$. We prove that the independence polynomial of $G^{\mathscr{C}}\star H^U$ $$I(G^{\mathscr{C}}\star H^U;x)=I^q(H;x)I(G;\frac{xI(H-U;x)}{I(H;x)}),$$ which generalizes some known results on independence polynomials of corona and …
A long-standing open conjecture in combinatorics asserts that a Gorenstein lattice polytope with the integer decomposition property (IDP) has a unimodal (Ehrhart) $h^\ast$-polynomial. This conjecture can be viewed as a strengthening of a previously disproved conjecture which stated that any Gorenstein lattice polytope has a unimodal $h^\ast$-polynomial. The first counterexamples to unimodality for Gorenstein lattice polytopes were given in even dimensions greater than five by Musta{ţ}{ǎ} and Payne, and this was extended to all dimensions greater than five by Payne. While there exist numerous e…
Simion had a unimodality conjecture concerning the number of lattice paths in a rectangular grid with the Ferrers diagram of a partition removed. Hildebrand recently showed the stronger result that these numbers are log concave. Here we present a simple proof of Hildebrand's result.
Simion conjectured the unimodality of a sequence counting lattice paths in a grid with a Ferrers diagram removed from the northwest corner. Recently, Hildebrand and then Wang proved the stronger result that this sequence is actually log concave. Both proofs were mainly algebraic in nature. We give two combinatorial proofs of this theorem.
We will look at the Catalan numbers from the {\it Rigged Configurations} point of view originated \cite{Kir} from an combinatorial analysis of the Bethe Ansatz Equations associated with the higher spin anisotropic Heisenberg models . Our strategy is to take a combinatorial interpretation of Catalan numbers $C_n$ as the number of standard Young tableaux of rectangular shape $(n^2)$, or equivalently, as the Kostka number $K_{(n^2),1^{2n}}$, as the starting point of research. We observe that the rectangular (or multidimensional) Catalan numbers $ C(m,n)$ introduced and studied by P. MacMahon \cit…
Graham and Lovász conjectured in 1978 that the sequence of normalized coefficients of the distance characteristic polynomial of a tree of order $n$ is unimodal with the maximum value occurring at $\lfloor\frac{n}{2}\rfloor$. In this paper we investigate this problem for block graphs. In particular, we prove the unimodality part and we establish the peak for several extremal cases of uniform block graphs with small diameter.
It is proved that a certain symmetric sequence of nonnegative integers arising in the enumeration of magic squares of given size n by row sums or, equivalently, in the generating function of the Ehrhart polynomial of the polytope of doubly stochastic n by n matrices, is equal to the h-vector of a simplicial polytope and hence that it satisfies the conditions of the g-theorem. The unimodality of this sequance, which follows, was conjectured by Stanley (1983). Several generalizations are given.
In algebraic, topological, and geometric combinatorics inequalities among the coefficients of combinatorial polynomials are frequently studied. Recently a notion called the alternatingly increasing property, which is stronger than unimodality, was introduced. In this paper, we relate the alternatingly increasing property to real-rootedness of the symmetric decomposition of a polynomial to develop a systematic approach for proving the alternatingly increasing property for several classes of polynomials. We apply our results to strengthen and generalize real-rootedness, unimodality, and alternat…
We investigate the rank-generating function $F_λ$ of the poset of partitions contained inside a given shifted Ferrers shape $λ$. When $λ$ has four parts, we show that $F_λ$ is unimodal when $λ=\langle n,n-1,n-2,n-3 \rangle$, for any $n\ge 4$, and that unimodality fails for the doubly-indexed, infinite family of partitions of the form $λ=\langle n,n-t,n-2t,n-3t \rangle$, for any given $t\ge 2$ and $n$ large enough with respect to $t$. When $λ$ has $b\le 3$ parts, we show that our rank-generating functions $F_λ$ are all unimodal. However, the situation remains mostly obscure for $b\ge 5$. In gen…
J. Nowakowski (2000) conjectured that the independence polynomial of a well-covered graph $G$ (i.e., a graph whose all maximal independent sets are of the same size) is unimodal, that is, there exists an index $k$ such that the part of the sequence of coefficients from the first to $k$-th is non-decreasing while the other part of coefficients is non-incre…
An open conjecture in pattern avoidance theory is that the distribution of the major index among 321-avoiding permutations is distributed unimodally. We construct a formula for this distribution, and in the case of 2 descents prove unimodality, with unimodality for 3 through 5 descents likely being little more complicated. The formula refines the $q$-analogue of the Frame-Robinson-Thrall hooklength formula for two-rowed partitions, and in the latter part of the paper we discuss another theorem of the same type, and further exploration toward this question. We also give observations on the anal…
An independent set in a graph is a set of pairwise non-adjacent vertices. The independence number $α{(G)}$ is the size of a maximum independent set in the graph $G$. The independence polynomial of a graph is the generating function for the sequence of numbers of independent sets of each size. In other words, the $k$-th coefficient of the independence polynomial equals the number of independent sets comprised of $k$ vertices. For instance, the degree of the independence polynomial of the graph $G$ is equal to $α{(G)}$. In 1987, Alavi, Malde, Schwenk, and Erd{ö}s conjectured that the independenc…
The descent polynomials of separable permutations and derangements are both demonstrated to be unimodal. Moreover, we prove that the $γ$-coefficients of the first are positive with an interpretation parallel to the classical Eulerian polynomial, while the second is spiral, a property stronger than unimodality. Furthermore, we conjecture that they are both real-rooted.
It is shown that the numbers $c_i$ of chains of length $i$ in the proper part $L\setminus\{0,1\}$ of a distributive lattice $L$ of length $\ell +2$ satisfy the inequalities $$c_0<...<c_{\lfloor{\ell /2}\rfloor} \quad{and}\quad c_{\lfloor{3 \ell /4}\rfloor}>...>c_{\ell}.$$ This proves 75 % of the inequalities implied by the Neggers unimodality conjecture.
In this paper we examine the sorting operator $T(LnR)=T(R)T(L)n$. Applying this operator to a permutation is equivalent to passing the permutation reversed through a stack. We prove theorems that characterise $t$-revstack sortability in terms of patterns in a permutation that we call $zigzag$ patterns. Using these theorems we characterise those permutations of length $n$ which are sorted by $t$ applications of $T$ for $t=0,1,2,n-3,n-2,n-1$. We derive expressions for the descent polynomials of these six classes of permutations and use this information to prove Steingrímsson's sorting conjecture…
An edge cut $C$ of a graph $G$ is {\it tight} if $|C \cap M|=1$ for every perfect matching $M$ of $G$.~Barrier cuts and 2-separation cuts are called {\it ELP-cuts}, which are two important types of tight cuts in matching covered graphs.~Edmonds, Lovász and Pulleyblank proved that if a matching covered graph has a nontrivial tight cut, then it also has a nontrivial ELP-cut.~Carvalho, Lucchesi, and Murty made a stronger conjecture: given any nontrivial tight cut $C$ in a matching covered graph $G$, there exists a nontrivial ELP-cut $D$ in $G$ which does not cross $C$.~We confirm the conjecture i…
The Nekrasov--Okounkov hook length formula provides a fundamental link between the theory of partitions and the coefficients of powers of the Dedekind eta function. In this paper we examine three conjectures presented by Amdeberhan. The first conjecture is a refined Nekrasov--Okounkov formula involving hooks with trivial legs. We prove the conjecture. The second conjecture is on properties of the roots of the underlying D'Arcais polynomials. We give a counterexample and present a new conjecture. The third conjecture is on the unimodality of the coefficients of the involved polynomials. We conf…
