A Morse function f on a manifold with corners M allows the characterization of the Morse data for a critical point by the Morse index. In fact, a modified gradient flow allows a proof of the Morse theorems in a manner similar to that of classical Morse theory. It follows that M is homotopy equivalent to a CW-complex with one cell of dimension λfor each essential critical point of index λ. The goal of this article is to determine the boundary maps of this CW-complex, in the case where M is compact and orientable.
First, the boundary maps are defined in terms of the modified gradient flow. Then a transversality condition is imposed which insures that the attaching map is non-degenerate in a neighborhood of each critical point. The degree of this map is then interpreted as a sum of trajectories connecting two critical points each counted with a multiplicity determined by a choice of orientations on the tangent spaces of the unstable manifold at each critical point.
Along with excursions into manifolds with corners, resolution towers of Thom and Whitney stratifications, I show that for a generic gradientlike vector field on a manifold with a Morse function, the stable manifolds give a CW decomposition of the manifold. This has been done before.
The questions when two Morse function on closed manifolds are conjugated is investigated. Using the handle decompositions of manifolds the condition of conjugation is formulated. For each Morse function on 3-manifold the ordered generalized Heegaard diagram is built. The criteria of Morse function conjugation are given in the terms of equivalence of such diagrams.
Main subject of the paper is a (strong) Morse function on a compact manifold with boundary. We construct a cellular structure and discuss its algebraic properties in this paper. Also we get an estimation on Arnold's question on a number of critical points of a Morse function with given boundary condition.
Given a compact smooth manifold $M$ with non-empty boundary and a Morse function, a pseudo-gradient Morse-Smale vector field adapted to the boundary allows one to build a Morse complex whose homology is isomorphic to the (absolute or relative to the boundary) homology of $M$ with integer coefficients. Our approach simplifies other methods which have been discussed in more specific geometric settings.
We show that, up to topological conjugation, the equivalence class of a Morse-Smale diffeomorphism without heteroclinic curves on 3-manifold is completely defined by an em- bedding of two-dimensional stable and unstable heteroclinic laminations to a characteristic space.
We prove a lower bound on the number of maximally broken trajectories of the negative gradient flow of a Morse-Smale function on a closed aspherical manifold in terms of integral (torsion) homology.
Scharlemann and Thompson define a numerical complexity for a 3-manifold using handle decompositions of the manifold. We show that for compact hyperbolic 3-manifolds this is linearly related to a definition of metric complexity in terms of the areas of level sets of Morse functions.
We discuss generic smooth maps from smooth manifolds to smooth surfaces, which we call "Morse 2-functions", and homotopies between such maps. The two central issues are to keep the fibers connected, in which case the Morse 2-function is "fiber-connected", and to avoid local extrema over 1-dimensional submanifolds of the range, in which case the Morse 2-function is "indefinite". This is foundational work for the long-range goal of defining smooth invariants from Morse 2-functions using tools analogous to classical Morse homology and Cerf theory.
Given a Morse 2-function $f: X^4 \to S^2$, we give minimal conditions on the fold curves and fibers so that $X^4$ and $f$ can be reconstructed from a certain combinatorial diagram attached to $S^2$. Additional remarks are made in other dimensions.
This note deals with arbitrary Morse-Smale diffeomorphisms in dimension 3 and extends ideas from \cite{GrLaPo}, \cite{GrLaPo1}, where gradient-like case was considered. We introduce a kind of Morse-Lyapunov function, called dynamically ordered, which fits well dynamics of diffeomorphism. The paper is devoted to finding conditions to the existence of such an energy function, that is, a function whose set of critical points coincides with the non-wandering set of the considered diffeomorphism. We show that the necessary and sufficient conditions to the existence of a dynamically ordered energy f…
Scharlemann and Thompson define the width of a 3-manifold M as a notion of complexity based on the topology of M. Their original definition had the property that the adjacency relation on handles gave a linear order on handles, but here we consider a more general definition due to Saito, Scharlemann and Schultens, in which the adjacency relation on handles may give an arbitrary graph. We show that for compact hyperbolic 3-manifolds, this is linearly related to a notion of metric complexity, based on the areas of level sets of Morse functions to graphs, which we call Gromov area.
This paper describes how to recover the topology of a closed manifold $M$ from a good Morse function $f$ on $M$. The essential method was suggested by Cohen, Jones and Segal. They constructed a topological category $C_{f}$ and claimed that the classifying space $BC_{f}$ is homeomorphic to $M$. We prove it from a different viewpoint with them using a cell decomposition of $M$ associated to $f$. The cell complex $M_{f}$ equipped with the decomposition induces a topological category $C(M_{f})$ whose classifying space $BC(M_{f})$ is homeomorphic to $M$. We show that $C(M_{f})$ is isomorphic to $C_…
We investigate the problem of the realization of a given graph as the Reeb graph $\mathcal{R}(f)$ of a smooth function $f\colon M\rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ with finitely many critical points, where $M$ is a closed manifold. We show that for any $n\geq2$ and any graph $Γ$ admitting the so called good orientation there exist an $n$-manifold $M$ and a Morse function $f\colon M\rightarrow \mathbb{R} $ such that its Reeb graph $\mathcal{R}(f)$ is isomorphic to $Γ$, extending previous results of Sharko and Masumoto-Saeki. We prove that Reeb graphs of simple Morse functions maximize the number of cycles…
We study codimension one smooth foliations with Morse type singularities on closed ma-nifolds. We obtain a description of the manifold in case the number of centers in greater then the number of saddles. This result relies on and extends previous results of Reeb (for foliations having only centers) and Ells-Kuiper (for manifolds admitting Morse functions with three singularities).
We prove that an embedded cobordism between manifolds with boundary can be split into a sequence of right product and left product cobordisms, if the codimension of the embedding is at least two. This is a topological counterpart of the algebraic splitting theorem for embedded cobordisms of the first author, A. Nemethi and A. Ranicki. In the codimension one case, we provide a slightly weaker statement. We also give proofs of rearrangement and cancellation theorems for handles of embedded submanifolds with boundary.
Developed from geometric arguments for bounding the Morse-Novikov number of a link in terms of its tunnel number, we obtain upper and lower bounds on the handle number of a Heegaard splitting of a sutured manifold $(M,γ)$ in terms of the handle number of its decompositions along a surface representing a given 2nd homology class. Fixing the sutured structure $(M,γ)$, this leads us to develop the handle number function $h \colon H_2(M,\partial M;\mathbb{R}) \to \mathbb{N}$ which is bounded, constant on rays from the origin, and locally maximal. Furthermore, for an integral class $ξ$, $h(ξ)=0$ if…
The main theorem of the paper shows that a smooth manifold which is homeomorphic to S^2xS^2 and has nonvanishing Ozsvath-Szabo invariant does not admit a perfect Morse function. I am withdrawing the paper because it is unclear to me if such a manifold exists.
On reconstructing Morse functions with prescribed level sets on $3$-dimensional manifolds and a necessary and sufficient condition for the reconstruction
Let G be a compact Lie group and A(G) its Burnside Ring. For a compact smooth n-dimensional G-manifold X equipped with a generic G-invariant vector field v, we prove an equivariant analog of the Morse formula Ind^G(v) = \sum_{k = 0}^{n} (-1)^k χ^G(\d_k^+X) which takes its values in A(G). Here Ind^G(v) denotes the equivariant index of the field v, {\d_k^+X\} the v-induced Morse stratification (see [M]) of the boundary \d X, and χ^G(\d_k^+X) the class of the (n - k)-manifold \d_k^+X in $A(G)$. We examine some applications of this formula to the equivariant real algebraic fields v in compact doma…
The paper is devoted to the study of topological properties, structure and classification of Morse flows with fixed points on the boundary of three-dimensional manifolds. We construct a complete topological invariant of a Morse flow, Pr-diagram, which is similar to the Heegaard diagram of a closed 3-manifold.
The complete invariant for gradient like Morse-Smale dynamical systems (vector fields and diffeomorphisms) on closed 4-manifolds are constructed. It is same as Kirby diagram in a case of polar vector field without fixed points of index 3.
The idea of Lichnerowicz or Morse-Novikov cohomology groups of a manifold has been utilized by many researchers to study important properties and invariants of a manifold. Morse-Novikov cohomology is defined using the differential $d_ω=d+ω\wedge$, where $ω$ is a closed $1$-form. We study Morse-Novikov cohomology relative to a foliation on a manifold and its homotopy invariance and then extend it to more general type of forms on a Riemannian foliation. We study the Laplacian and Hodge decompositions for the corresponding differential operators on reduced leafwise Morse-Novikov complexes. In the…
We develop Morse theory for manifolds with boundary. Besides standard and expected facts like the handle cancellation theorem and the Morse lemma for manifolds with boundary, we prove that, under a topological assumption, a critical point in the interior of a Morse function can be moved to the boundary, where it splits into a pair of boundary critical points. As an application, we prove that every cobordism of manifolds with boundary splits as a union of left product cobordisms and right product cobordisms.
For a closed oriented 3-manifold $Y$ we define $n(Y)$ to be the minimal non-negative number such that in each homotopy class of non-singular vector fields of $Y$ there is a Morse-Smale vector field with less or equal to $n(Y)$ periodic orbits. We combine the construction process of Morse-Smale flows given in [2] with handle decompositions of compact orientable surfaces to provide an upper bound to the number $n(Y)$ for oriented Seifert manifolds and oriented graph manifolds prime to $\stwo\times\sone$.
We construct a smooth Riemannian metric on any 3-manifold with the property that there are genus zero embedded minimal surfaces of arbitrarily high Morse index.
Characterizing $3$-dimensional manifolds represented as connected sums of Lens spaces, $S^2 \times S^1$, and torus bundles over the circle by certain Morse-Bott functions
The paper is devoted to finding conditions to the existence of a self-indexing energy function for Morse-Smale diffeomorphisms on a 3-manifold. These conditions involve how the stable and unstable manifolds of saddle points are embedded in the ambient manifold. We also show that the existence of a self-indexing energy function is equivalent to the existence of a Heegaard splitting of a special type with respect to the considered diffeomorphism.
In this paper, it is explained that a topological invariant for 3-manifold $M$ with $b_1(M)=1$ can be constructed by applying Fukaya's Morse homotopy theoretic approach for Chern--Simons perturbation theory to a local system on $M$ of rational functions associated to the free abelian covering of $M$. Our invariant takes values in Garoufalidis--Rozansky's space of Jacobi diagrams whose edges are colored by rational functions. It is expected that our invariant gives a lot of nontrivial finite type invariants of 3-manifolds.
The approach we present is a modification of the Morse theory for unital C*-algebras. We provide tools for the geometric interpretation of noncommutative CW complexes. These objects were introduced and studied in [2],[7] and [14]. Some examples to illustrate these geometric information in practice are given. A classification of unital C*-algebras by noncommutative CW complexes and the modified Morse functions on them is the main object of this work.
By a Morse function on a compact manifold with boundary we mean a real-valued function without critical points near the boundary such that its critical points as well as the critical points of its restriction to the boundary are all non-degenerate. For such Morse functions, Saeki and Yamamoto have previously defined a certain notion of cusp cobordism, and computed the unoriented cusp cobordism group of Morse functions on surfaces. In this paper, we compute unoriented and oriented cusp cobordism groups of Morse functions on manifolds of any dimension by employing Levine's cusp elimination techn…
The works of Donaldson and Mark make the structure of the Seiberg-Witten invariant of 3-manifolds clear. It corresponds to certain torsion type invariants counting flow lines and closed orbits of a gradient flow of a circle-valued Morse map on a 3-manifold. We study these invariants using the Morse-Novikov theory and Heegaard splitting for sutured manifolds, and make detailed computations for knot complements.
Considering a solid 3-dimensional Klein bottle and a collaring of its boundary, can we extend a generic $C^\infty$ non-singular function defined on the collaring to the full solid Klein bottle without critical points? We give a condition on the Reeb graph of the given function that is necessary and sufficient for the existence of such a non-singular extension.
We give elementary constructions of manifold with corner structures and associative gluing maps on compactifications of spaces of infinite, half infinite, and finite Morse flow lines.
We give a generalization of Fukaya's Morse homotopy theoretic approach for 2-loop Chern--Simons perturbation theory to 3-valent graphs with arbitrary number of loops at least 2. We construct a sequence of invariants of integral homology 3-spheres with values in a space of 3-valent graphs (Jacobi diagrams or Feynman diagrams) by counting graphs in an integral homology 3-sphere satisfying certain condition described by a set of ordinary differential equations.
In the case of smooth manifolds, we use Forman's discrete Morse theory to realize combinatorially any Thom-Smale complex coming from a smooth Morse function by a couple triangulation-discrete Morse function. As an application, we prove that any Euler structure on a smooth oriented closed 3-manifold has a particular realization by a complete matching on the Hasse diagram of a triangulation of the manifold.
The first author in recent work with D. Gay developed the notion of a Morse structure on an open book as a tool for studying closed contact 3-manifolds. We extend the notion of Morse structure to extendable partial open books in order to study contact 3-manifolds with convex boundary.
Smooth functions which are Morse on preimages of values not being local extrema and constructing natural functions of the class on connected sums of manifolds admitting these functions
Given a closed Riemannian manifold of dimension $n$ and a Morse-Smale function, there are finitely many $n$-part broken trajectories of the negative gradient flow. We show that if the manifold admits a hyperbolic metric, then the number of $n$-part broken trajectories is always at least the hyperbolic volume. The proof combines known theorems in Morse theory with lemmas of Gromov about simplicial volumes of stratified spaces.
In this paper, we study Vanishing Mean Oscillation vector fields on a compact manifold with boundary. Inspired by the work of Brezis and Niremberg, we construct a topological invariant - the index - for such fields, and establish the analogue of Morse's formula. As a consequence, we characterize the set of boundary data which can be extended to nowhere vanishing VMO vector fields. Finally, we show briefly how these ideas can be applied to (unoriented) line fields with VMO regularity, thus providing a reasonable framework for modelling a surface coated with a thin film of nematic liquid crystal…
We consider a Morse function $f$ and a Morse-Smale gradient-like vector field $X$ on a compact connected oriented 3-manifold $M$ such that $f$ has only one critical point of index 3. Based on Laudenbach's ideas, we will show that the flow of $X$ can be isotoped into one so that the trajectory spaces of the new flow provide a stratification for $M$. We will construct "natural" tubular neighborhoods about each given trajectory space of the new flow such that these neighborhoods are stratified by open subsets of trajectory spaces that co-bound the given one. In connection with this we introduce t…
After surveying classical notions of PL topology of the Seventies, we clarify the relation between Morse theory and its discretization by Forman. We show that PL handles theory and discrete Morse theory are equivalent, in the sense that every discrete Morse vector on some PL triangulation is also a PL handle vector, and conversely, every PL handle vector is also a discrete Morse vector on some PL triangulation. It follows that in dimension up to 7, every discrete Morse vector on some PL triangulation is also a smooth Morse vector; the vice versa is true in all dimensions. This revises and impr…
In 1967, Chillingworth proved that all convex simplicial 3-balls are collapsible. Using the classical notion of tightness, we generalize this to arbitrary manifolds: We show that all tight simplicial 3-manifolds admit some perfect discrete Morse function. We also strengthen Chillingworth's theorem by proving that all convex simplicial 3-balls are non-evasive. In contrast, we show that many non-evasive 3-balls are not convex.
In the first part of this paper, we consider smooth maps from a compact orientable 3-manifold without boundary to the 2-sphere. We give a geometric criterion to decide whether two given maps are homotopic, based on the sets of points where the maps are equal or antipodal. We extend this criterion to non-singular vector fields (and co-oriented plane fields) on 3-manifolds. In the second part, we make use of this criterion to study non-singular Morse-Smale vector fields on Seifert manifolds, giving a simple proof of a result of Yano.
We study Morse theory on noncompact manifolds equipped with exhaustions by compact pieces, defining the Morse homology of a pair which consists of the manifold and related geometric/homotopy data. We construct a collection of Morse data parametrized by cubes of arbitrary dimensions. From this collection, we obtain a family of linear maps subject to some coherency conditions, which can be packaged into a homotopy coherent diagram. We introduce a chain complex which is a colimit for the diagram and show that it computes the Morse homology.
For a 3-manifold $M$ with $b_1(M)=1$ fibered over $S^1$ and the fiberwise gradient $ξ$ of a fiberwise Morse function on $M$, we introduce the notion of amidakuji-like path (AL-path) on $M$. An AL-path is a piecewise smooth path on $M$ consisting of edges each of which is either a part of a critical locus of $ξ$ or a flow line of $-ξ$. Counting closed AL-paths with signs gives the Lefschetz zeta function of $M$. The "moduli space" of AL-paths on $M$ gives explicitly Lescop's equivariant propagator, which can be used to define $\mathbb{Z}$-equivariant version of Chern--Simons perturbation theory…
