In a previous article, the second author proved that the image of the Galois representation mod $λ$ attached to a Hilbert modular newform is large or all but finitely many primes $λ$, if the form is not a theta series. In this brief note, we give an explicit bound for this exceptional finite set of primes and determine the images in three different examples. Our examples are of Hilbert newforms on real quadratic fields, of parallel or non-parallel weight and of different levels.
We give an effective version of a result reported by Serre asserting that the images of the Galois representations attached to an abelian surface with $\End(A)= \mathbb{Z}$ are as large as possible for almost every prime. Our algorithm depends on the truth of Serre's conjecture for two dimensional odd irreducible Galois representations. Assuming this conjecture we determine the finite set of primes with exceptional image.
In this paper we generalize the work of Harris-Soudry-Taylor and construct the compatible systems of two-dimensional Galois representations attached to cuspidal automorphic representations of cohomological type on GL_2 over a CM field with a suitable condition on their central characters. We also prove a local-global compatibility statement, up to semisimplification.
We address the problem of the determination of the images of the Galois representations attached to genus 2 Siegel cusp forms of level 1 having multiplicity one. These representations are symplectic. We prove that the images are as large as possible for almost every prime, if the Siegel cusp form is not a Maass spezialform and verifies two easy to check conditions.
We sketch a method to compute mod $\ell$ Galois representations contained in the H2 étale of surfaces. We apply this method to the case of a representation with values in GL(3,9) attached to an eigenform over a congruence subgroup of SL(3). We obtain in particular a polynomial with Galois group isomorphic to the simple group PSU(3,9) and ramified at 2 and 3 only.
By making use of Langlands functoriality between GSp(4) and GL(4), we show that the images of the Galois representations attached to "genuine" globally generic automorphic representations of GSp(4) are "large" for almost every prime. Moreover, by using the notion of (n,p)-groups (introduced by Khare, Larsen and Savin) and generic Langlands functoriality from SO(5) to GL(4) we construct automorphic representations of GSp(4) such that the compatible system attached to them has large image for all primes.
Let $A$ be an absolutely simple abelian variety without (potential) complex multiplication, defined over the number field $K$. Suppose that either $\dim A=2$ or $A$ is of $\operatorname{GL}_2$-type: we give an explicit bound $\ell_0(A,K)$ such that, for every prime $\ell>\ell_0(A,K)$, the image of the absolute Galois group of $K$ in $\operatorname{Aut}(T_\ell(A))$ is as large as it is allowed to be by endomorphisms and polarizations.
Let $π$ be a cuspidal automorphic representation of $\mathrm{GSp}_4(\mathbf{A_Q})$, whose archimedean component is a holomorphic discrete series or limit of discrete series representation. If $π$ is not CAP or endoscopic, then we show that its associated $\ell$-adic Galois representations are irreducible and crystalline for $100\%$ of primes $\ell$. If, moreover, $π$ is neither an automorphic induction nor a symmetric cube lift, then we show that, for $100\%$ of primes $\ell$, the image of its mod $\ell$ Galois representation contains $\mathrm{Sp}_4(\mathbf{F}_{\ell})$.
The main result of this article states that the Galois representation attached to a Hilbert modular eigenform defined over F_p^bar of parallel weight 1 and level prime to p is unramified above p. This includes the important case of eigenforms that do not lift to Hilbert modular forms in characteristic 0 of parallel weight 1. The proof is based on the observation that parallel weight 1 forms in characteristic p embed into the ordinary part of parallel weight p forms in two different ways per prime dividing p, namely via `partial' Frobenius operators.
Let $K$ be a number field, $A/K$ be an absolutely simple abelian variety of CM type, and $\ell$ be a prime number. We give explicit bounds on the degree over $K$ of the division fields $K(A[\ell^n])$, and when $A$ is an elliptic curve we also describe the full Galois group of $K(A_{\text{tors}})/K$. This makes explicit previous results of Serre and Ribet, and strengthens a theorem of Banaszak, Gajda and Krasoń. Our bounds are especially sharp in case the CM type of $A$ is nondegenerate.
The goal of this article is to give an explicit classification of the possible $p$-adic Galois representations that are attached to elliptic curves $E$ with CM defined over $\mathbb{Q}(j(E))$. More precisely, let $K$ be an imaginary quadratic field, and let $\mathcal{O}_{K,f}$ be an order in $K$ of conductor $f\geq 1$. Let $E$ be an elliptic curve with CM by $\mathcal{O}_{K,f}$, such that $E$ is defined by a model over $\mathbb{Q}(j(E))$. Let $p\geq 2$ be a prime, let $G_{\mathbb{Q}(j(E))}$ be the absolute Galois group of $\mathbb{Q}(j(E))$, and let $ρ_{E,p^\infty}\colon G_{\mathbb{Q}(j(E))}\t…
We show that the image of the adelic Galois representation attached to a non-CM modular form is open in the adelic points of a suitable algebraic group. We also show a similar result for the adelic Galois representation attached to a finite set of modular forms.
We determine the sign of the polarization of any polarized irreducible factor of a Galois representation attached to a polarized cohomological cuspidal automorphic form of Gl_n of a CM field: it is always +1, as was conjectured by Gross.
Let $ρ$ be the $p$-adic Galois representation attached to a cuspidal, regular algebraic, polarizable automorphic representation of $GL_n$. Assuming only that $ρ$ satisfies an irreducibility condition, we prove the vanishing of the adjoint Bloch--Kato Selmer group attached to $ρ$. This generalizes previous work of the author and James Newton.
We extend the computations in [AGM1, AGM2, AGM3] to find the cohomology in degree five of a congruence subgroup Gamma of SL(4,Z) with coefficients in a field K, twisted by a nebentype character eta, along with the action of the Hecke algebra. This is the top cuspidal degree. In practice we take K to be a finite field of large characteristic, as a proxy for the complex numbers. For each Hecke eigenclass found, we produce a Galois representation that appears to be attached to it. Our computations show that in every case this Galois representation is the only one that could be attached to it. The…
Kloosterman sums for a finite field arise as Frobenius trace functions of certain local systems defined over $\Gm$. The moments of Kloosterman sums calculate the Frobenius traces on the cohomology of tensor powers (or symmetric powers, exterior powers, etc.) of these local systems. We show that when $p$ ranges over all primes, the moments of the corresponding Kloosterman sums for $\mathbb{F}_{p}$ arise as Frobenius traces on a continuous $\ell$-adic Galois representation that comes from geometry. We also give bounds on the ramification of these Galois representations. All this is done in the g…
For many finite groups, the Inverse Galois Problem can be approached through modular/automorphic Galois representations. This is a report explaining the basic strategy, ideas and methods behind some recent results. It focusses mostly on the 2-dimensional case and underlines in particular the importance of understanding coefficient fields.
Let $\ell$ be a prime number and let $F$ be a number field and $E/F$ a non-CM elliptic curve with a point $α\in E(F)$ of infinite order. Attached to the pair $(E,α)$ is the $\ell$-adic arboreal Galois representation $ω_{E,α,\ell^{\infty}} : {\rm Gal}(\overline{F}/F) \to \mathbb{Z}_{\ell}^{2} \rtimes {\rm GL}_{2}(\mathbb{Z}_{\ell})$ describing the action of ${\rm Gal}(\overline{F}/F)$ on points $β_{n}$ so that $\ell^{n} β_{n} = α$. We give an explicit bound on the index of the image of $ω_{E,α,\ell^{\infty}}$ depending on how $\ell$-divisible the point $α$ is, and the image of the ordinary $\el…
We study Galois representations attached to nonsimple abelian varieties over finitely generated fields of arbitrary characteristic. We give sufficient conditions for such representations to decompose as a product, and apply them to prove arithmetical analogues of results shown by Moonen and Zarhin in the context of complex abelian varieties (of dimension at most 5).
In this paper, we propose an improved algorithm for computing mod $\ell$ Galois representations associated to eigenforms of arbitrary levels prime to $\ell$. Precisely, we present a method to find the Jacobians of modular curves which have the smallest possible dimensions in a well-defined sense to realize the modular Galois representations. This algorithm also works without the assumption $\ell \ge k-1$, where $k$ are the weights of the eigenforms.
We prove the indecomposability of Galois representation restricted to the p-decomposition group attached to a non CM nearly p-ordinary weight two Hilbert modular form under mild conditions.
We prove the existence of Euler systems for adjoint modular Galois representations using deformations of Galois representations coming from Hilbert modular forms and relate them to $p$-adic $L$-functions under a conjectural formula for the Fitting ideals of some equivariant congruence modules for abelian base change.
For each of the groups PSL2(F25), PSL2(F32), PSL2(F49), PGL2(F25), and PGL2(F27), we display the first explicitly known polynomials over Q having that group as Galois group. Each polynomial is related to a Galois representation associated to a modular form. We indicate how computations with modular Galois representations were used to obtain these polynomials. For each polynomial, we also indicate how to use Serre's conjectures to determine the modular form giving rise to the related Galois representation.
We introduce Galois families of modular forms. They are a new kind of family coming from Galois representations of the absolute Galois groups of rational function fields over the rational field. We exhibit some examples and provide an infinite Galois family of non-liftable weight one Katz modular eigenforms over an algebraic closure of F_p for p in {3,5,7,11}.
We give a direct approach to recover some of the results of Wiles and Tayor on modularity of certain 2-dimensional p-adic representations of the absolute Galois group of Q.
In this work we provide a level raising theorem for $\mod λ^n$ modular Galois representations. It allows one to see such a Galois representation that is modular of level $N$, weight 2 and trivial Nebentypus as one that is modular of level $Np$, for a prime $p$ coprime to $N$, when a certain local condition at $p$ is satisfied. It is a generalization of a result of Ribet concerning $\mod \ell$ Galois representations.
We establish a relation between Galois reducibility and Endoscopy for genus 2 Siegel cusp forms which have rational eigenvalues and are unramified at 3
We show that an infinite family of odd complex 2-dimensional Galois representations ramified at 5 having nonsolvable projective image are modular, thereby verifying Artin's conjecture for a new case of examples. Such a family contains the original example studied by Buhler. In the process, we prove that an infinite family of residually modular Galois representations are modular by studying $Λ$-adic Hecke algebras.
We construct plane models of the modular curve $X_H(\ell)$, and use their explicit equations to compute Galois representations associated to modular forms for values of $\ell$ that are significantly higher than in prior works.
We address the problem of the determination of the images of three-dimensional geometric and modular Galois representations. In the modular case the existence of these representations is only conjectural. We give conditions to ensure that the images are as large as possible for almost every prime. We compute some examples and stress the applications to inverse Galois theory.
In 1992, Avner Ash and Mark McConnell presented computational evidence of a connection between three-dimensional Galois representations and certain arithmetic cohomology classes. For some examples they were unable to determine the attached representation. For several Hecke eigenclasses (including one for which Ash and McConnell did not find the Galois representation), we find a Galois representation which appears to be attached and show strong evidence for the uniqueness of this representation. The techniques that we use to find defining polynomials for the Galois representations include a tar…
In the 80's Aschbacher classified the maximal subgroups of almost all of the finite almost simple classical groups. Essentially, this classification divide these subgroups into two types. The first of these consist roughly of subgroups that preserve some kind of geometric structure, so they are commonly called subgroups of geometric type. In this paper we will prove the existence of infinitely many compatible systems $\{ ρ_\ell \}_\ell$ of $n$-dimensional Galois representations associated to regular algebraic, essentially self-dual, cuspidal automorphic representations of $\mbox{GL}_n(\mathbb{…
This article starts a computational study of congruences of modular forms and modular Galois representations modulo prime powers. Algorithms are described that compute the maximum integer modulo which two monic coprime integral polynomials have a root in common in a sense that is defined. These techniques are applied to the study of congruences of modular forms and modular Galois representations modulo prime powers. Finally, some computational results with implications on the (non-)liftability of modular forms modulo prime powers and possible generalisations of level raising are presented.
This article computes the Galois groups of congruence covers arising in the context of certain hyperbolic triangle groups. As a consequence of this computation, the genera of the respective curves are deduced.
We give a classification theorem for certain four-dimensional families of geometric $λ$-adic Galois representations attached to a pure motive. More precisely, we consider families attached to the cohomology of a smooth projective variety defined over $\Q$ with coefficients in a quadratic imaginary field, non-selfdual and with four different Hodge-Tate weights. We prove that the image is as large as possible for almost every $λ$ provided that the family is irreducible and not induced from a family of smaller dimension. If we restrict to semistable families an even simpler classification is give…
In this article, I discuss material which is related to the recent proof of Fermat's Last Theorem: elliptic curves, modular forms, Galois representations and their deformations, Frey's construction, and the conjectures of Serre and of Taniyama--Shimura.
We formulate a question regarding uniform versions of "large Galois image properties" for modular abelian varieties of higher dimension, generalizing the well-known case of elliptic curves. We then answer our question affirmatively in the exceptional image case, and provide lower estimates for uniform bounds in the remaining cases.
In this paper we describe an algorithm for computing mod $\ell$ Galois representations associated to modular forms of weight $k$ when $\ell <k-1$. As applications, we use this algorithm to explicitly compute the cases with $Δ_{k}$ for $k=16,20, 22, 26$ and all the unexceptional primes $\ell$ with $\ell <k-1$.
Given a prime $p$ and cusp forms $f_1$ and $f_2$ on some $Γ_1(N)$ that are eigenforms outside $Np$ and have coefficients in the ring of integers of some number field $K$, we consider the problem of deciding whether $f_1$ and $f_2$ have the same eigenvalues mod ${\mathfrak p}^m$ (where ${\mathfrak p}$ is a fixed prime of $K$ over $p$) for Hecke operators $T_{\ell}$ at all primes $\ell\nmid Np$. When the weights of the forms are equal the problem is easily solved via an easy generalization of a theorem of Sturm. Thus, the main challenge in the analysis is the case where the forms have different …
In this letter we show that for certain infinite families of modular forms of growing level it is possible to have a control result for the exceptional primes of the attached Galois representations. As an application, a uniform version of a result of Wiese on Galois realizations of linear groups over finite fields of arbitrarily large exponent is proved.
In this paper we obtain realizations of the 4-dimensional general symplectic group over a prime field of characteristic $\ell>3$ as the Galois group of a tamely ramified Galois extension of $\mathbb{Q}$. The strategy is to consider the Galois representation $ρ_{\ell}$ attached to the Tate module at $\ell$ of a suitable abelian surface. We need to choose the abelian varieties carefully in order to ensure that the image of $ρ_{\ell}$ is large and simultaneously maintain a control on the ramification of the corresponding Galois extension. We obtain an explicit family of curves of genus 2 such tha…
We prove new cases of the inverse Galois problem by considering the residual Galois representations arising from a fixed newform. Specific choices of weight $3$ newforms will show that there are Galois extensions of $\mathbb{Q}$ with Galois group $PSL_2(\mathbb{F}_p)$ for all primes $p$ and $PSL_2(\mathbb{F}_{p^3})$ for all odd primes $p \equiv \pm 2, \pm 3, \pm 4, \pm 6 \pmod{13}$.
We construct extensions of the field of rational numbers with the Galois group G_2(F_p) by reducing p-adic representations attached to automorphic representations.
In this article new cases of the Inverse Galois Problem are established. The main result is that for a fixed integer n, there is a positive density set of primes p such that PSL_2(F_{p^n}) occurs as the Galois group of some finite extension of the rational numbers. These groups are obtained as projective images of residual modular Galois representations. Moreover, families of modular forms are constructed such that the images of all their residual Galois representations are as large as a priori possible. Both results essentially use Khare's and Wintenberger's notion of good-dihedral primes. Pa…
Let $F$ be a totally real number field and let $p$ be a prime unramified in $F$. We prove the existence of Galois pseudo-representations attached to mod $p^m$ Hecke eigenclasses of paritious weight occurring in the coherent cohomology of Hilbert modular varieties for $F$ of level prime to $p$.
This article surveys modularity, level raising and level lowering questions for two-dimensional representations modulo prime powers of the absolute Galois group of the rational numbers. It contributes some new results and describes algorithms and a database of modular forms orbits and higher congruences.
We prove modularity for any irreducible crystalline $\ell$-adic odd 2-dimensional Galois representation (with finite ramification set) unramified at 3 verifying an "ordinarity at 3" easy to check condition, with Hodge-Tate weights $\{0, w \}$ such that $2 w < \ell$ (and $\ell > 3$) and such that the traces $a_p$ of the images of Frobenii verify $\Q(\{a_p \}) = \Q $. This result applies in particular to any motivic compatible family of odd two-dimensional Galois representations of $\Gal(\bar{\Q}/\Q)$ if the motive has rational coefficients, good reduction at 3, and the "ordinarity at 3" conditi…
In this paper we explicitly compute mod-l Galois representations associated to modular forms. To be precise, we look at cases with l<=23 and the modular forms considered will be cusp forms of level 1 and weight up to 22. We present the result in terms of polynomials associated to the projectivised representations. As an application, we will improve a known result on Lehmer's non-vanishing conjecture for Ramanujan's tau function.
Ming-Lun Hsieh constructed three-variable triple product p-adic L-functions attached to triples of primitive Hida families and proved interpolation formulas. We generalize his result in the unbalanced case and construct a three-variable triple product p-adic L-function attached to a primitive Hida family and two more general p-adic families of modular forms.
This paper gives an expository account of our experiments concerning relations between modular forms for congruence subgroups of SL(3,Z) and three dimensional Galois representations. The main new result presented here is a calculation of the variations of the Hodge structure corresponding to the motives we consider in realizing the Galois representations. It turns out that the period spaces for the Hodge structures are four dimensional, while the geometric realizations of such Hodge structures can appear in subspaces of dimension at most one.
In this work we study the analytic properties of the standard L-function attached to Siegel-Jacobi modular forms of higher index, generalizing previous results of Arakawa and Murase. Furthermore, we obtain algebraicity results on special L-values in the spirit of Deligne's Period Conjectures.
We show how our p-adic method to compute Galois representations occurring in the torsion of Jacobians of algebraic curves can be adapted to modular curves. The main ingredient is the use of "moduli-friendly" Eisenstein series introduced by Makdisi, which allow us to evaluate modular forms at p-adic of modular curves points and dispenses us of the need for equations of modular curves and for q-expansion computations. The resulting algorithm compares very favourably to the complex-analytic method.
We calculate an explicit lower bound on the proportion of elliptic curves that are modular over any Galois CM field not containing $ζ_5$. Applied to imaginary quadratic fields, this proportion is at least $2/5$. Applied to cyclotomic fields $\mathbb{Q}(ζ_n)$ with $5\nmid n$, this proportion is at least $1-\varepsilon$ with only finitely many exceptions of $n$, for any choice of $\varepsilon > 0$.
We give a parametrization of the possible Serre invariants $(N,k,ν)$ of modular mod $\ell$ Galois representations of the exceptional types $A_4$, $S_4$, $A_5$, in terms of local data attached to the fields cut out by the associated projective representations. We show how this result combined with certain global considerations leads to an effective procedure that will determine for a given eigenform $f$ and prime $\ell$ whether a mod $\ell$ representation attached to $f$ is exceptional. We illustrate with numerical examples.
Let E be an elliptic curve without complex multiplication (CM) over a number field K, and let G_E(ell) be the image of the Galois representation induced by the action of the absolute Galois group of K on the ell-torsion subgroup of E. We present two probabilistic algorithms to simultaneously determine G_E(ell) up to local conjugacy for all primes ell by sampling images of Frobenius elements; one is of Las Vegas type and the other is a Monte Carlo algorithm. They determine G_E(ell) up to one of at most two isomorphic conjugacy classes of subgroups of GL_2(Z/ell Z) that have the same semisimplif…
We prove modularity of some two dimensional, 2-adic Galois representations over totally real fields that are nearly ordinary and that are residually dihedral. We do this by employing the strategy of Skinner and Wiles, using Hida families, together with the 2-adic patching method of Khare and Wintenberger. As an application we deduce modularity of some elliptic curves over totally real fields that have good ordinary or multiplicative reduction at places above 2.
