Given a prime $p$ and cusp forms $f_1$ and $f_2$ on some $Γ_1(N)$ that are eigenforms outside $Np$ and have coefficients in the ring of integers of some number field $K$, we consider the problem of deciding whether $f_1$ and $f_2$ have the same eigenvalues mod ${\mathfrak p}^m$ (where ${\mathfrak p}$ is a fixed prime of $K$ over $p$) for Hecke operators $T_{\ell}$ at all primes $\ell\nmid Np$.
When the weights of the forms are equal the problem is easily solved via an easy generalization of a theorem of Sturm. Thus, the main challenge in the analysis is the case where the forms have different weights. Here, we prove a number of necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of congruences mod ${\mathfrak p}^m$ in the above sense.
The prime motivation for this study is the connection to modular mod ${\mathfrak p}^m$ Galois representations, and we also explain this connection.
We study a mod $p^c$ analog of the notion of transfer for automorphic forms. Instead of existence of eigenforms, such transfers yield congruences between eigenforms but, like transfers, we show that they can be established by a comparison of trace formulas. This rests on the properties of mod $p^c$ reduced multiplicities which count congruences between eigenforms. As an application we construct finite slope $p$-adic {\it continuous} families of Siegel eigenforms using a comparison of trace formulas.
Inspired by recent congruences by Andersen with varying powers of 2 in the modulus for partition related functions, we extend the modulo 32760 congruences of the first author for the function spt(n). We show that a normalized form of the generating function of spt(n) is an eigenform modulo 32 for the Hecke operators T(l^2) for primes l >= 5 with l congruent to 1, 11, 17, 19 (mod 24), and an eigenform modulo 16 for l congruent to? 13, 23 (mod 24).
Let $f$ be a newform of weight $2$ on $Γ_0(N)$ with Fourier $q$-expansion $f(q)=q+\sum_{n\geq 2} a_n q^n$, where $Γ_0(N)$ denotes the group of invertible matrices with integer coefficients, upper triangular mod $N$. Let $p$ be a prime dividing $N$ once, $p\parallel N$, a Steinberg prime. Then, it is well known that $a_p\in\{1,-1\}$. We denote by $K_f$ the field of coefficients of $f$. Let $λ$ be a finite place in $K_f$ not dividing $2p$ and assume that the mod $λ$ Galois representation attached to $f$ is irreducible. In this paper we will give necessary and sufficient conditions for the existe…
We continue the study of strong, weak, and $dc$-weak eigenforms introduced by Chen, Kiming, and Wiese. We completely determine all systems of Hecke eigenvalues of level $1$ modulo $128$, showing there are finitely many. This extends results of Hatada and can be considered as evidence for the more general conjecture formulated by the author together with Kiming and Wiese on finiteness of systems of Hecke eigenvalues modulo prime powers at any fixed level. We also discuss the finiteness of systems of Hecke eigenvalues of level $1$ modulo $9$, reducing the question to the finiteness of a single e…
Let k and n be positive even integers. For a cuspidal Hecke eigenform g in the Kohnen plus subspace of weight k-n/2+1/2 and level 4, let I(g) be the Duke-Imamoglu-Ikeda lift of g in the space of cusp forms of weight k for Sp(n,Z), and f the primitive form of weight 2k-n for SL(2,Z) corresponding to g under the Shimura correspondence. We then characterize prime ideals giving congruence between I(g) and another cuspidal Hecke eigenform not coming from the Duke-Imamoglu-Ikeda lift in terms of the specilal values of the Hecke L-function and the adjoint L-function of f.
We sketch a method to compute mod $\ell$ Galois representations contained in the H2 étale of surfaces. We apply this method to the case of a representation with values in GL(3,9) attached to an eigenform over a congruence subgroup of SL(3). We obtain in particular a polynomial with Galois group isomorphic to the simple group PSU(3,9) and ramified at 2 and 3 only.
New congruences are found for Andrews' smallest parts partition function spt(n). The generating function for spt(n) is related to the holomorphic part alpha(24z) of a certain weak Maass form M(z) of weight 3/2. We show that a normalized form of the generating function for spt(n) is an eigenform modulo 72 for the Hecke operators T(p^2) for primes p > 3, and an eigenform modulo t for t = 5, 7 or 13 provided that (t, 6p) = 1. The result for the modulus 3 was observed earlier by the author and considered by Ono and Folsom. Similar congruences for higher powers of t (namely 5^6, 7^4 and 13^2) occur…
Atkin and Swinnerton-Dyer congruences are special congruence recursions satisfied by coefficients of noncongruence modular forms. These are in some sense $p$-adic analogues of Hecke recursion satisfied by classic Hecke eigenforms. They actually appeared in different context and sometimes can be obtained using the theory of formal groups. In this survey paper, we introduce the Atkin and Swinnerton-Dyer congruences, and discuss some recent progress on this topic.
Given a prime $p \ge 5$ and an abstract odd representation $ρ_n$ with coefficients modulo $p^n$ (for some $n \ge 1$) and big image, we prove the existence of a lift of $ρ_n$ to characteristic $0$ whenever local lifts exist (under some technical conditions). Moreover, we can chose the inertial type of our lift at all primes but finitely many (where the lift is of Steinberg type). We apply this result to the realm of modular forms, proving a level lowering theorem modulo prime powers and providing examples of level raising. In particular, our method shows that given a modular eigenform $f$ witho…
We prove a commutative algebra result which has consequences for congruences between automorphic forms modulo prime powers. If C denotes the congruence module for a fixed automorphic Hecke eigenform π_0 we prove an exact relation between the p-adic valuation of the order of C and the sum of the exponents of p-power congruences between the Hecke eigenvalues of π_0 and other automorphic forms. We apply this result to several situations including the congruences described by Mazur's Eisenstein ideal.
We consider $p$-adic families of Siegel eigenforms of genus $2$ and finite slope, defined as local pieces of an eigenvariety and equipped with a suitable integral structure. Under some assumptions on the residual image, we show that the image of the Galois representation associated with a family is big, in the sense that a Lie algebra attached to it contains a congruence subalgebra of non-zero level. We call Galois level of the family the largest such level. We show that it is trivial when the residual representation has full image. When the residual representation is a symmetric cube, the zer…
Under relatively mild and natural conditions, we establish an integral period relations for the (real or imaginary) quadratic base change of an elliptic cusp form. This answers a conjecture of Hida regarding the {\it congruence number} controlling the congruences between this base change and other eigenforms which are not base change. As a corollary, we establish the Bloch-Kato conjecture for adjoint modular Galois representations twisted by an even quadratic character. In the odd case, we formulate a conjecture linking the degree two topological period attached to the base change Bianchi modu…
We consider the genus of $20$ classes of unimodular Hermitian lattices of rank $12$ over the Eisenstein integers. This set is the domain for a certain space of algebraic modular forms. We find a basis of Hecke eigenforms, and guess global Arthur parameters for the associated automorphic representations, which recover the computed Hecke eigenvalues. Congruences between Hecke eigenspaces, combined with the assumed parameters, recover known congruences for classical modular forms, and support new instances of conjectured Eisenstein congruences for $\mathbb{U}(2,2)$ automorphic forms.

In this paper, we consider the $L$-functions $L(s, f)$ where $f$ is an eigenform for the congruence subgroup $Γ_1(q)$. We prove an asymptotic formula for the sixth moment of this family of automorphic $L$-functions.
Let $b_\ell(n)$ be the number of $\ell$-regular partitions of $n$. Recently, Hou et al established several infinite families of congruences for $b_\ell(n)$ modulo $m$, where $(\ell,m)=(3,3),(6,3),(5,5),(10,5)$ and $(7,7)$. In this paper, by the vanishing property given by Hou et al, we show an infinite family of congruence for $b_{11}(n)$ modulo $11$. Moreover, for $\ell= 3, 13$ and $25$, we obtain three infinite families of congruences for $b_{\ell}(n)$ modulo $3, 5$ and $13$ by the theory of Hecke eigenforms.
We classify Siegel modular cusp forms of weight two for the paramodular group K(p) for primes p< 600. We find that weight two Hecke eigenforms beyond the Gritsenko lifts correspond to certain abelian varieties defined over the rationals of conductor p. The arithmetic classification is in a companion article by A. Brumer and K. Kramer. The Paramodular Conjecture, supported by these computations and consistent with the Langlands philosophy and the work of H. Yoshida, is a partial extension to degree 2 of the Shimura-Taniyama Conjecture. These nonlift Hecke eigenforms share Euler factors with the…
Let spt(n) denote the total number of appearances of smallest parts in the partitions of n. Recently, Andrews showed how spt(n) is related to the second rank moment, and proved some surprising Ramanujan-type congruences mod 5, 7 and 13. We prove a generalization of these congruences using known relations between rank and crank moments. We obtain explicit Ramanujan-type congruences for spt(n) mod p for p = 11, 17, 19, 29, 31 and 37. Recently, Bringmann and Ono proved that Dyson's rank function has infinitely many Ramanujan-type congruences. Their proof is non-constructive and utilizes the theor…
We introduce the notion of Drinfeld modular forms with $A$-expansions, where instead of the usual Fourier expansion in $t^n$ ($t$ being the uniformizer at `infinity'), parametrized by $n \in \mathbb{N}$, we look at expansions in $t_a$, parametrized by $a \in A = \Fq [T]$. We construct an infinite family of eigenforms with $A$-expansions. Drinfeld modular forms with $A$-expansions have many desirable properties that allow us to explicitly compute the Hecke action. The applications of our results include: (i) various congruences between Drinfeld eigenforms; (ii) the computation of the eigensyste…
Let $f$ be a primitive form with respect to $SL_2(Z)$. Then we propose a conjecture on the congruence between the Klingen-Eisenstein lift of the Duke-Imamoglu-Ikeda lift of $f$ and a certain lift of a vector valued Hecke eigenform with respect to $Sp_2(Z)$. This conjecture implies Harder's conjecture. We prove the above conjecture in some cases.
We study modular Galois representations mod $p^m$. We show that there are three progressively weaker notions of modularity for a Galois representation mod $p^m$: we have named these `strongly', `weakly', and `dc-weakly' modular. Here, `dc' stands for `divided congruence' in the sense of Katz and Hida. These notions of modularity are relative to a fixed level $M$. Using results of Hida we display a `stripping-of-powers of $p$ away from the level' type of result: A mod $p^m$ strongly modular representation of some level $Np^r$ is always dc-weakly modular of level $N$ (here, $N$ is a natural numb…
Let f be a newform of weight 2k-2 and level 1. In this paper we provide evidence for the Bloch-Kato conjecture for modular forms. We demonstrate an implication that under suitable hypothesis if a prime divides the algebraic part of L(k,f), then the prime divides the order of the Selmer group associated to f. We demonstrate this by establishing a congruence between the Saito-Kurokawa lift of f and a cuspidal Siegel eigenform that is not a Saito-Kurokawa lift. We then examine what this congruence says in terms of Galois representations to produce a non-trivial p-torsion element in the Selmer gro…
Given a rational elliptic curve E, a suitable imaginary quadratic field K and a quaternionic Hecke eigenform g of weight 2 obtained from E by level raising such that the sign in the functional equation for L_K(E,s) (respectively, L_K(g,1)) is -1 (respectively, +1), we prove a ``Jochnowitz congruence'' between the algebraic part of L'_K(E,1) (expressed in terms of Heegner points on Shimura curves) and the algebraic part of L_K(g,1). This establishes a relation between Zhang's formula of Gross-Zagier type for central derivatives of L-series and his formula of Gross type for special values. Our r…
Let k be a positive integer divisible by 4, l>k a prime, and f an elliptic cuspidal eigenform of weight k-1, level 4, and non-trivial character. Let ρ_f be the l-adic Galois representation attached to f. In this paper we provide evidence for the Bloch-Kato conjecture for a twist of the adjoint motif of ρ_f in the following way. Let L(f,s) denote the symmetric square L-function of f. We prove that (under certain conditions) the l-adic valuation of the algebraic part of L(f, k) is no greater than the l-adic valuation of the order of S, where S is (the Pontryagin dual of) the Selmer group attache…
A new and exciting breakthrough due to Maynard establishes that there exist infinitely many pairs of distinct primes $p_1,p_2$ with $|p_1-p_2|\leq 600$ as a consequence of the Bombieri-Vinogradov Theorem. In this paper, we apply his general method to the setting of Chebotarev sets of primes. We study applications of these bounded gaps with an emphasis on ranks of prime quadratic twists of elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$, congruence properties of the Fourier coefficients of normalized Hecke eigenforms, and representations of primes by binary quadratic forms.
We use Maeda's Conjecture to prove that the Rankin-Cohen bracket of an eigenform and any modular form is only an eigenform when forced to be because of the dimensions of the underlying spaces. We further determine when the Rankin-Cohen bracket of an eigenform and modular form is not forced to produce an eigenform and when it is determined by the injectivity of the operator itself. This can also be interpreted as using the Rankin-Cohen bracket operator of eigenforms to create evidence for Maeda's Conjecture.
We work out a non-trivial example of lifting a so-called weak eigenform to a true, characteristic 0 eigenform. The weak eigenform is closely related to Ramanujan's tau function whereas the characteristic 0 eigenform is attached to an elliptic curve defined over ${\mathbb Q}$. We produce the lift by showing that the coefficients of the initial, weak eigenform (almost all) occur as traces of Frobenii in the Galois representation on the 4-torsion of the elliptic curve. The example is remarkable as the initial form is known not to be liftable to any characteristic 0 eigenform of level 1. We use th…
The notions of strong, weak and dc-weak eigenforms mod $p^n$ was introduced and studied by Chen, Kiming and Wiese. In this work, we prove that there can be no uniform weight bound (that is, depending only on $p$, $n$) on dc-weak eigenforms mod $p^n$ of fixed level when $n \geq 2$. This is in contrast with the result of Kiming, Rustom and Wiese which establishes a uniform weight bound on strong eigenforms mod $p^n$. As a step towards studying weights bounds for weak eigenforms mod $p^n$, we provide a criterion which allows us to detect whether a given dc-weak eigenform mod $p^n$ is weak.
We show that the image of repeated differentiation on weak cusp forms is precisely the subspace which is orthogonal to the space of weakly holomorphic modular forms. This gives a new interpretation of the weakly holomorphic Hecke eigenforms.
Suppose $j_N(τ)$ and $j_N^{*}(τ)$ are the Hauptmoduln of the congruence subgroup $Γ_0(N)$ and the Fricke group $Γ^{*}_0(N)$, respectively. In [7], the authors predicted that, like Klein's $j$-function, the Fourier coefficients of $j_N(τ)$ and $j_{N}^{*}(τ)$ in some arithmetic progression are both even and odd with density $\frac{1}{2}$. In this article, we can find some arithmetic progression of $n$ where the Fourier coefficients of $j_6(τ)$ (resp. $j_6^{*}(τ)$ and $j_{10}(τ)$) are almost always even. Furthermore, using Hecke eigenforms and Rogers-Ramanujan continued fraction, we obtain infini…
Cusp forms for the full modular group can be written as linear combination of double Eisenstein series introduced by Gangl, Kaneko and Zagier. We give an explicit formula for decomposing a Hecke eigenform into double Eisenstein series.
We prove that amongst all real quadratic fields and all spaces of Hilbert modular forms of full level and of weight $2$ or greater, the product of two Hecke eigenforms is not a Hecke eigenform except for finitely many real quadratic fields and finitely many weights. We show that for $\mathbb Q(\sqrt 5)$ there are exactly two such identities.
The aim of this paper is to show how differential characters of Abelian varieties can be used to construct differential modular forms of weight 0 and order 2 which are eigenvectors of Hecke operators. These differential modular forms have "essentially the same" eigenvalues as certain classical complex eigenforms of weight 2.
In this article we prove level raising for cuspidal eigenforms modulo prime powers (for odd primes) of weight $k\geq 2$ and arbitrary character, extending the result in weight two established by the work of Tsaknias and Wiese and generalizing (partially) Diamond-Ribet's celebrated level raising theorems.
We obtain a closed form polynomial expression for certain coefficients of Drinfeld-Goss double-cuspidal modular forms which are eigenforms for the degree one Hecke operators with power eigenvalues, and we use those formulas to prove vanishing results for an infinite family of those coefficients.
Let f be a modular form with complex multiplication. If f has critical slope, then Coleman's classicality theorem implies that there is a p-adic overconvergent generalized Hecke eigenform with the same Hecke eigenvalues as f. We give a formula for the Fourier coefficiets of this generalized Hecke eigenform. We also investigate the dimension of the generalized Hecke eigenspace of p-adic overconvergent forms containing f.
The main result of this article states that the Galois representation attached to a Hilbert modular eigenform defined over F_p^bar of parallel weight 1 and level prime to p is unramified above p. This includes the important case of eigenforms that do not lift to Hilbert modular forms in characteristic 0 of parallel weight 1. The proof is based on the observation that parallel weight 1 forms in characteristic p embed into the ordinary part of parallel weight p forms in two different ways per prime dividing p, namely via `partial' Frobenius operators.
Although links between values of finite field hypergeometric functions and eigenvalues of elliptic modular forms are well known, we establish in this paper that there are also connections to eigenvalues of Siegel modular forms of higher degree. Specifically, we relate the eigenvalue of the Hecke operator of index $p$ of a Siegel eigenform of degree 2 and level 8 to a special value of a ${}_4F_3$-hypergeometric function.
Consider the Fourier expansions of two elements of a given space of modular forms. How many leading coefficients must agree in order to guarantee that the two expansions are the same? Sturm gave an upper bound for modular forms of a given weight and level. This was adapted by Ram Murty, Kohnen and Ghitza to the case of two eigenforms of the same level but having potentially different weights. We consider their expansions modulo a prime ideal, presenting a new bound. In the process of analysing this bound, we generalise a result of Bach and Sorenson, who provide a practical upper bound for the …
