Let $p$ be a prime number and let $n$ be a positive integer prime to $p$. By an Ihara result we mean existence of an injection with torsion-free cokernel from a full lattice in the space of $p$-old modular forms, into a full lattice in the space of all modular forms of level $np$. In this paper, we prove Ihara results for genus two Siegel modular forms, Siegel-Jacobi forms and Hilbert modular forms. We also propose a geometric formulation for the notion of $p$-old Siegel modular forms of genus two.
The prime geodesic theorem for cycles in Bruhat-Tits buildings is applied to unit groups of division algebras to derive new asymptotic assertion on class numbers of orders in imaginary quadratic fields.
The goal of this paper is to reformulate the conjectural "Ihara lemma" for $U(n)$ in terms of the local Langlands correspondence in families $\tildeπ_Σ(\cdot)$, as currently being developed by Emerton and Helm. The reformulation roughly takes the following form. Suppose we are given an irreducible mod $\ell$ Galois representation $\bar{r}$, which is modular of full level (and small weight), and a finite set of places $Σ$ -- none of which divide $\ell$. Then $\tildeπ_Σ(r)$ exists, and has a global realization as a natural module of algebraic modular forms, where $r$ is the universal $Σ$-deforma…
An analogue over imaginary quadratic fields of a result in algebraic number theory known as Ihara's lemma is established. More precisely, we show that for a prime ideal P of the ring of integers of an imaginary quadratic field F, the kernel of the sum of the two standard P-degeneracy maps between the cuspidal sheaf cohomology H^1_!(X_0, M_0)^2 --> H^1_!(X_1, M_1) is Eisenstein. Here X_0 and X_1 are analogues over F of the modular curves X_0(N) and X_0(Np), respectively. To prove our theorem we use the method of modular symbols and the congruence subgroup property for the group SL(2) which is d…
In this paper, we give a detailed account of Goldfeld's proof of Siegel's theorem. Particularly, we present complete proofs of the nontrivial assumptions made in his paper.
We extend the Siegel-Walfisz theorem to a family of integer sequences that are characterized by constraints on the size of the prime factors. Besides prime powers, this family includes smooth numbers, almost primes and practical numbers.
In this paper, we present a simple analytic proof of Siegel's theorem that concerns the lower bound of $L(1,χ)$ for primitive quadratic $χ$. Our new method compares an elementary lower bound with an analytic upper bound obtained by the inverse Mellin transform of $Γ(s)$.
In this article, we prove a generalisation of the Mertens theorem for prime numbers to number fields and algebraic varieties over finite fields, paying attention to the genus of the field (or the Betti numbers of the variety), in order to make it tend to infinity and thus to point out the link between it and the famous Brauer-Siegel theorem. Using this we deduce an explicit version of the generalised Brauer-Siegel theorem under GRH, and a unified proof of this theorem for asymptotically exact families of almost normal number fields.
In 2002, M. A. Tsfasman and S. G. Vlăduţ formulated the generalized Brauer-Siegel conjecture for asymptotically exact families of number fields. In this article, we establish this conjecture for asymptotically good towers and asymptotically bad families of number fields with solvable normal closure.
We prove that integral points can be effectively determined on all but finitely many modular curves, and on all but one modular curve of prime power level.
We describe a plan how to prove an effective Siegel theorem (about the exceptional Dirichlet character). We give a brief outline in Section 0. We give a more detailed plan in Sections 1-5. The missing details (mostly routine elementary estimations) are in Part Two, which is very long. I am happy to send the pdf-file of Part Two to anybody who requests it by email.
Consider an elliptic curve, defined over the rational numbers, and embedded in projective space. The rational points on the curve are viewed as integer vectors with coprime coordinates. What can be said about a rational point if a bound is placed upon the number of prime factors dividing a fixed coordinate? If the bound is zero, then Siegel's Theorem guarantees that there are only finitely many such points. We consider, theoretically and computationally, two conjectures: one is a generalization of Siegel's Theorem and the other is a refinement which resonates with Hall's conjecture.
Using Y.André's result on differential equations staisfied by $E$-functions, we derive an improved version of the Siegel-Shidlovskii theorem. It gives a complete characterisation of algebraic relations over the algebraic numbers between values of $E$-functions at any non-zero algebraic point.
We prove equidistribution theorems for a family of holomorphic Siegel cusp forms of general degree in the level aspect. Our main contribution is to estimate unipotent contributions for general degree in the geometric side of Arthur's invariant trace formula in terms of Shintani zeta functions. Several applications including the vertical Sato-Tate theorem and low-lying zeros for standard $L$-functions of holomorphic Siegel cusp forms are discussed. We also show that the "non-genuine forms" which come from non-trivial endoscopic contributions by Langlands functoriality classified by Arthur are n…
We give two applications of Arthur's multiplicity formula to Siegel modular forms. The one is a lifting theorem for vector valued Siegel modular forms, which contains Miyawaki's conjectures and Ibukiyama's conjectures. The other is the strong multiplicity one theorem for Siegel modular forms of scalar weights and level one.
Following N. Elkies ("ABC implies Mordell") we show that the abc conjecture of Masser-Oesterle implies an effective version of Siegel's theorem about integral points on algebraic curves, i.e. an upper bound for the S-integral points where the dependence on S is explicit. The converse statement is also announced in this note. For both results, the main geometric tool is a theorem of G.V. Belyi.
It is known that in the case of hyperelliptic curves the Shafarevich conjecture can be made effective, i.e., for any number field k and any finite set of places S of k, one can effectively compute the set of isomorphism classes of hyperelliptic curves over k with good reduction outside S. We show here that an extension of this result to an effective Shafarevich conjecture for Jacobians of hyperelliptic curves of genus g would imply an effective version of Siegel's theorem for integral points on hyperelliptic curves of genus g.
Given a characteristic, we define a character of the Siegel modular group of level 2, the computations of their values are also obtained. By using our theorems, some key theorems of Igusa [1] can be recovered.
Consider a rational point on an elliptic curve under an isogeny. Suppose that the action of Galois partitions the set of its pre-images into n orbits. It is shown that all such points above a certain height have their denominator divisible by at least n distinct primes. This generalizes Siegel's theorem and more recent results of Everest et al. For multiplication by a prime l, it is shown that if n>1 then either the point is l times a rational point or the elliptic curve emits a rational l-isogeny.
We attempt to generalize a congruence property of elliptic modular forms proved by Sturm to that of Haupttypus of Siegel modular forms of degree 2 with level. Namely, we give an explicit bound of Fourier coefficients required to determine the congruence of modular forms. We give the analog of Sturm's theorem for Jacobi forms, which is required in the proof. In the case that Nebentypus of Siegel modular forms with prime level, in order to prove the congruence between two modular forms, we show that it suffices to check the congruence of the finitely many Fourier coefficients. Finally, we give t…
In this paper, we study graph-theoretic analogies of the Mertens' theorems by using basic properties of the Ihara zeta-function. One of our results is a refinement of a special case of the dynamical system Mertens' second theorem due to Sharp and Pollicott.
We prove an analogue of the Brauer-Siegel theorem for the Legendre elliptic curves over $\mathbb{F}_q(t)$. More precisely, if $d$ is an integer coprime to $q$, we denote by $E_d$ the elliptic curve with model $y^2=x(x+1)(x+t^d)$ over $K=\mathbb{F}_q(t)$. We give an asymptotic estimate of the product of the order of the Tate-Shafarevich group of $E_d$ (which is known to be finite) with its Néron-Tate regulator, in terms of the exponential differential height of $E_d$, as $d\to\infty$.
Siegel proved that every totally positive element of a number field K is the sum of four squares, so in particular the Pythagoras number is uniformly bounded across number fields. The p-adic Kochen operator provides a p-adic analogue of squaring, and a certain localisation of the ring generated by this operator consists of precisely the totally p-integral elements of K. We use this to formulate and prove a p-adic analogue of Siegel's theorem, by introducing the p-Pythagoras number of a general field, and showing that this number is uniformly bounded across number fields. We also generally stud…
We prove that all mod $p^m$ singular forms of level $N$, degree $n+r$, and $p$-rank $r$ with $n\ge r$ are congruent mod $p^m$ to linear combinations of theta series of degree $r$ attached to quadratic forms of some level. Moreover, we prove that, the levels of theta series are of the form ``$p\mbox{-power}\times N$''. Additionally, in some cases of mod $p$ singular forms with smallest possible weight, we prove that the levels of theta series should be $p$.
We prove an analogue of the Brauer-Siegel theorem for Fermat surfaces over a finite field. Namely, letting $F_d$ be the Fermat surface of degree $d$ over $\mathbb{F}_q$ and $p_g(F_d)$ be its geometric genus, we consider the product of the order of the Brauer group $\mathrm{Br}(F_d)$ of $F_d$ times the absolute value of a Gram determinant of the Néron-Severi group of $F_d$ with respect to the intersection form (the regulator $\mathrm{Reg}(F_d)$ of $F_d$). We show that this product grows like $q^{p_g(F_d)}$ when $d$ tends to infinity: $$ \log\left( |\mathrm{Br}(F_d)|\cdot \mathrm{Reg}(F_d)\right…
We prove an analog of Siegel's theorem for integral points in the context of Drinfeld modules. The result holds for finitely generated submodules of the additive group over a function field of transcendence dimension 1.
For a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ of characteristic $p\geq 5$ and $K=\mathbb{F}_q(t)$, we consider the family of elliptic curves $E_d$ over $K$ given by $y^2+xy - t^dy=x^3$ for all integers $d$ coprime to $q$. We provide an explicit expression for the $L$-functions of these curves in terms of Jacobi sums. Moreover, we deduce from this calculation that the curves $E_d$ satisfy an analogue of the Brauer-Siegel theorem. More precisely, we estimate the asymptotic growth of the product of the order of the Tate-Shafarevich group of $E_d$ (which is known to be finite) by its Néron-Tate regulator, in …
We consider higher-dimensional analogues of the classical Brauer-Siegel theorem focusing on the case of abelian varieties over global function fields. We prove such an analogue in the case of constant families of elliptic curves and abelian varieties.
In this paper, we establish a link between the structure theory of the pro-unipotent motivic fundamental group of the projective line minus three points and Diophantine geometry. In particular, we give a p-adic proof of Siegel's theorem.
The purpose of this paper is to give an explicit dimension formula for the spaces of vector valued Siegel cusp forms of degree two with respect to a certain kind of arithmetic subgroups of the non-split Q-forms of Sp(2,R). We obtain our result by using Hashimoto and Ibukiyama's results in [HI80],[HI83] and Wakatsuki's formula in [Wak]. Our result is a generalization of formulae in [Has84,Theorem 4.1] and [Wak,Theorem 6.1].
The Green-Tao-Ziegler theorem provides asymptotics for the number of prime tuples of the form $(ψ_1(n),\ldots,ψ_t(n))$ when $n$ ranges among the integer vectors of a convex body $K\subset [-N,N]^d$ and $Ψ=(ψ_1,\ldots,ψ_t)$ is a system of affine-linear forms whose linear coefficients remain bounded (in terms of $N$). In the $t=1$ case, the Siegel-Walfisz theorem shows that the asymptotic still holds when the coefficients vary like a power of $\log N$. We prove a higher-dimensional (i.e. $t>1$) version of this fact. We provide natural examples where our theorem goes beyond the one of Green and T…
The classical Brauer-Siegel theorem states that if $k$ runs through the sequence of normal extensions of $\mathbb{Q}$ such that $n_k/\log|D_k|\to 0,$ then $\log h_k R_k/\log \sqrt{|D_k|}\to 1.$ First, in this paper we obtain the generalization of the Brauer-Siegel and Tsfasman-Vlăduţ theorems to the case of almost normal number fields. Second, using the approach of Hajir and Maire, we construct several new examples concerning the Brauer-Siegel ratio in asymptotically good towers of number fields. These examples give smaller values of the Brauer-Siegel ratio than those given by Tsfasman and Vlă…
This paper is a continuation of the author's previous wotk. We supplement four results on a family of holomorphic Siegel cusp forms for $GSp_4/\mathbb{Q}$. First, we improve the result on Hecke fields. Namely, we prove that the degree of Hecke fields is unbounded on the subspace of genuine forms which do not come from functorial lift of smaller subgroups of $GSp_4$ under a conjecture in local-global compatibility and Arthur's classification for $GSp_4$. Second, we prove simultaneous vertical Sato-Tate theorem. Namely, we prove simultaneous equidistribution of Hecke eigenvalues at finitely many…
The theory of Ihara zeta functions is extended to non-compact arithmetic quotients of Bruhat-Tits trees. This new zeta function turns out to be a rational function, despite the infinite-dimensional setting. In general it has zeros and poles, in contrast to the compact case. The determinant formulas of Bass and Ihara hold true if one defines the determinant as limit of all finite principal minors. From this analysis, a prime geodesic theorem is derived, which, applied to special arithmetic groups, yields new asymptotic assertions on class numbers of orders in global fields.
Let $j(z)$ be the modular $j$-invariant function. Let $τ$ be an algebraic number in the complex upper half plane $\mathbb{H}$. It was proved by Schneider and Siegel that if $τ$ is not a CM point, i.e., $[\mathbb{Q}(τ):\mathbb{Q}]\neq2$, then $j(τ)$ is transcendental. Let $f$ be a harmonic weak Maass form of weight $0$ on $Γ_0(N)$. In this paper, we consider an extension of the results of Schneider and Siegel to a family of values of $f$ on Hecke orbits of $τ$. For a positive integer $m$, let $T_m$ denote the $m$-th Hecke operator. Suppose that the coefficients of the principal part of $f$ at t…
We prove new theorems which are higher-dimensional generalizations of the classical theorems of Siegel on integral points on affine curves and of Picard on holomorphic maps from $\mathbb{C}$ to affine curves. These include results on integral points over varying number fields of bounded degree and results on Kobayashi hyperbolicity. We give a number of new conjectures describing, from our point of view, how we expect Siegel's and Picard's theorems to optimally generalize to higher dimensions. In some special cases we will be able to relate our conjectures to existing conjectures. In this respe…
In the recent paper arXiv:1807.02721, B. Lawrence and A. Venkatesh develop a method of proving finiteness theorems in arithmetic geometry by studying the geometry of families over a base variety. Their results include a new proof of both the $S$-unit theorem and Faltings' theorem, obtained by constructing and studying suitable abelian-by-finite families over $\mathbb{P}^1\setminus\{0,1,\infty\}$ and over an arbitrary curve of genus $\geq 2$ respectively. In this paper, we apply this strategy to reprove Siegel's theorem: we construct an abelian-by-finite family on a punctured elliptic curve to …
We prove higher moment formulas for Siegel transforms defined over the space of unimodular $S$-lattices in $\mathbb Q_S^d$, $d\ge 3$, where in the real case, the formulas are introduced by Rogers (1955). As applications, we obtain the random statements of Gauss circle problem for any convex sets in $\mathbb Q_S^d$ containing the origin and of the effective Oppenheim conjecture for $S$-arithmetic quadratic forms.
Let p be a fixed prime number. Let K be a totally real number field of discriminant D\_K and let T\_K be the torsion group of the Galois group of the maximal abelian p-ramified pro-p-extension of K (under Leopoldt's conjecture). We conjecture the existence of a constant C\_p>0 such that log(\#T\_K) $\le$ C\_p log(\sqrt(D\_K)) when K varies in some specified families (e.g., fields of fixed degree). In some sense, we suggest the existence of a p-adic analogue, of the classical Brauer--Siegel Theorem, wearing here on the valuation of the residue at s=1 (essentially equal to \#T\_K) of the p-adic …
We prove an equidistribution theorem for a family of holomorphic Siegel cusp forms for $GSp_4/\mathbb{Q}$ in various aspects. A main tool is Arthur's invariant trace formula. While Shin and Shin-Templier used Euler-Poincaré functions at infinity in the formula, we use a pseudo-coefficient of a holomorphic discrete series to extract holomorphic Siegel cusp forms. Then the non-semisimple contributions arise from the geometric side, and this provides new second main terms $A, B_1$ in the main theorem which have not been studied and a mysterious second term $B_2$ also appears in the second main te…
We correct the proof of the theorem in the previous paper presented by the first named author, which concerns Sturm bounds for Siegel modular forms of degree $2$ and of even weights modulo a prime number dividing $2\cdot 3$. We give also Sturm bounds for them of odd weights for any prime numbers, and we prove their sharpness. The results cover the case where Fourier coefficients are algebraic numbers.
In this paper, we introduce an algebro-geometric formulation for Siegel's theorem using an improvement of Lang's version of Roth's theorem over finitely generated fields of characteristic zero. In fact, we prove that, for an affine open curve in an irreducible smooth curve of genus at least one, any finitely generated subgroup of the additive group of the affine ambient space intersects the open curve in only finitely many points. This was proved only for finitely generated subgroups defined over a localization of the ring of integers of a number field by Mahler and others.
Let f(t,X) be an irreducible polynomial over the field of rational functions k(t), where k is a number field. Let O be the ring of integers of k. Hilbert's irreducibility theorem gives infinitely many integral specializations of t to values a in O such that f(a,X) is still irreducible. In this paper we study the set Red(O) of those a in O with f(a,X) reducible. We show that Red(O) is a finite set under rather weak assumptions. In particular, several results of K. Langmann, obtained by Diophantine approximation techniques, appear as special cases of some of our results. Our method is completely…

We prove the following uniformity principle: if one of the Galois representations in the family attached to a genus two Siegel cusp form of weight $k>3$, "semistable" and with multiplicity one, is reducible (for an odd prime $p$),then all the representations in the family are reducible. This, combined with Serre's conjecture (which is now a theorem) gives a proof of the Endoscopy Conjecture.
We give a sharpened form of Siegel Lemma's w. r. t. the maximum norm. This implies a new lower bound on the greatest element of a sum-distinct set of positive integers (Erdös-Moser problem). The main tools are Minkowski's theorem on successive minima and the Busemann theorem from convex geometry.
The paper has two purposes. First, we start to develop a theory of infinite global fields, i.e., of infinite algebraic extensions either of ${\mathbb{Q}}$ or of ${\mathbb{F}}_r(t)$. We produce a series of invariants of such fields, and we introduce and study a kind of zeta-function for them. Second, for sequences of number fields with growing discriminant we prove generalizations of the Odlyzko--Serre bounds and of the Brauer--Siegel theorem, taking into account non-archimedean places. This leads to asymptotic bounds on the ratio ${{\log hR}/\log\sqrt{| D|}}$ valid without the standard assumpt…
We study the distribution of prime numbers under the unlikely assumption that Siegel zeros exist. In particular we prove for \[ \sum_{n \leq X} Λ(n) Λ(\pm n+h) \] an asymptotic formula which holds uniformly for $h = O(X)$. Such an asymptotic formula has been previously obtained only for fixed $h$ in which case our result quantitatively improves those of Heath-Brown (1983) and Tao and Teräväinen (2021). Since our main theorems work also for large $h$ we can derive new results concerning connections between Siegel zeros and the Goldbach conjecture and between Siegel zeros and primes in almost al…
We classify the finite primitive permutation groups which have a cyclic subgroup with two orbits. This extends classical topics in permutation group theory, and has arithmetic consequences. By a theorem of C. L. Siegel, affine algebraic curves with infinitely many integral points are parametrized by rational functions whose monodromy groups have this property. We classify the possibilities of these monodromy groups, and give an application to Hilbert's irreducibility theorem.
