Let f(t,X) be an irreducible polynomial over the field of rational functions k(t), where k is a number field. Let O be the ring of integers of k. Hilbert's irreducibility theorem gives infinitely many integral specializations of t to values a in O such that f(a,X) is still irreducible. In this paper we study the set Red(O) of those a in O with f(a,X) reducible. We show that Red(O) is a finite set under rather weak assumptions. In particular, several results of K. Langmann, obtained by Diophantine approximation techniques, appear as special cases of some of our results. Our method is completely different. We use elementary group theory, valuation theory, and Siegel's theorem about integral points on algebraic curves. Indeed, using the Siegel-Lang extension of Siegel's theorem, most of our results hold over more general fields.
We describe an explicit version of Hilbert's irreducibility theorem using a generalization of Gallagher's larger sieve. We give applications to the Galois theory of random polynomials, and to the images of the adelic representation associated to elliptic curves varying in rational families.
We prove a version of Hilbert's Irreducibility Theorem in the quadratic case, giving a quantitative improvement to a result of Bilu-Gillibert in this restricted setting. As an application, we give improvements to several quantitative results counting quadratic fields with certain types of ideal class groups. The proof of the main theorem is based on a result of Stewart and Top on values of binary forms modulo squares.
In this paper we discuss applications of our earlier work in studying certain Galois groups and splitting fields of rational functions in $\mathbb Q\left(X_0(N)\right)$ using Hilbert's irreducibility theorem and modular forms. We also consider computational aspect of the problem using MAGMA and SAGE.
We prove a quantitative version of Hilbert's irreducibility theorem for function fields: If $f(T_1,\ldots, T_n,X)$ is an irreducible polynomial over the field of rational functions over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ of characteristic $p$, then the proportion of $n$-tuples $(t_1,\ldots, t_n)$ of monic polynomials of degree $d$ for which $f(t_1,\ldots, t_n,X)$ is reducible out of all $n$-tuples of degree $d$ monic polynomials is $O(dq^{-d/2})$.
Let $P(T,X)$ be an irreducible polynomial in two variables with rational coefficients. It follows from Hilbert's Irreducibility Theorem that for most rational numbers $t$ the specialized polynomial $P(t,X)$ is irreducible and has the same Galois group as $P$. We discuss here a method for obtaining an explicit description of the set of exceptional numbers $t$, i.e., those for which $P(t,X)$ is either reducible or has a different Galois group than $P$. To illustrate the method we determine the exceptional specializations of two polynomials of degrees four and six.
In this paper we obtain new quantitative forms of Hilbert's Irreducibility Theorem. In particular, we show that if $f(X, T_1, \ldots, T_s)$ is an irreducible polynomial with integer coefficients, having Galois group $G$ over the function field $\mathbb{Q}(T_1, \ldots, T_s)$, and $K$ is any subgroup of $G$, then there are at most $O_{f, \varepsilon}(H^{s-1+|G/K|^{-1}+\varepsilon})$ specialisations $\mathbf{t} \in \mathbb{Z}^s$ with $|\mathbf{t}| \le H$ such that the resulting polynomial $f(X)$ has Galois group $K$ over the rationals.
The paper offers versions of Hilbert's Irreducibility Theorem for the lifting of points in a cyclic subgroup of an algebraic group to a ramified cover. A version of Bertini Theorem in this context is also obtained.
We determine the number of irreducible components of the reduction mod p of any Hilbert-Blumenthal moduli space with a parahoric level structure, where p is unramified in the totally real field.

We study irreducible specializations, in particular when group-preserving specializations may not exist. We obtain a criterion in terms of embedding problems. We include several applications to analogs of Schinzel's hypothesis H and to the theory of Hilbertian fields.
We define the over-exceptional lattice of a minimal algebraic surface of Kodaira dimension 0. Bounding the rank of this object, we prove that a conjecture by Campana and Corvaja--Zannier holds for Enriques surfaces, as well as K3 surfaces of Picard rank greater than 6 apart from a finite list of geometric Picard lattices. Concretely, we prove that such surfaces over finitely generated fields of characteristic 0 satisfy the weak Hilbert property after a finite field extension of the base field. The degree of the field extension can be uniformly bounded.
We prove (under certain assumptions) the irreducibility of the limit $σ_2$ of a sequence of irreducible essentially self-dual Galois representations $σ_k: G_{\mathbf{Q}} \to \mathrm{GL}_4(\overline{\mathbf{Q}}_p)$ (as $k$ approaches 2 in a $p$-adic sense) which mod $p$ reduce (after semi-simplifying) to $1 \oplus ρ\oplus χ$ with $ρ$ irreducible, two-dimensional of determinant $χ$, where $χ$ is the mod $p$ cyclotomic character. More precisely, we assume that $σ_k$ are crystalline (with a particular choice of weights) and Siegel-ordinary at $p$. Such representations arise in the study of $p$-adi…
Let $G$ be a connected linear algebraic group over a number field $K$, let $Γ$ be a finitely generated Zariski dense subgroup of $G(K)$ and let $Z\subseteq G(K)$ be a thin set, in the sense of Serre. We prove that, if $G/\mathrm{R}_u(G)$ is semisimple and $Z$ satisfies certain necessary conditions, then a long random walk on a Cayley graph of $Γ$ hits elements of $Z$ with negligible probability. We deduce corollaries to Galois covers, characteristic polynomials, and fixed points in group actions. We also prove analogous results in the case where $K$ is a global function field.

We prove that the integral points are potentially Zariski dense in the complement of a reduced effective singular anticanonical divisor in a smooth del Pezzo surface, with the exception of $\mathbb{P}^2$ minus three concurrent lines (for which potential density does not hold). This answers positively a question raised by Hassett and Tschinkel and, combined with previous results, completes the proof of the potential density of integral points for complements of anticanonical divisors in smooth del Pezzo surfaces. We then classify the complements which are simply connected and for these we prove…
We establish a version "over the ring" of the celebrated Hilbert Irreducibility Theorem. Given finitely many polynomials in $k+n$ variables, with coefficients in $\mathbb Z$, of positive degree in the last $n$ variables, we show that if they are irreducible over $\mathbb Z$ and satisfy a necessary "Schinzel condition", then the first $k$ variables can be specialized in a Zariski-dense subset of ${\mathbb Z}^k$ in such a way that irreducibility over ${\mathbb Z}$ is preserved for the polynomials in the remaining $n$ variables. The Schinzel condition, which comes from the Schinzel Hypothesis, is…

Let $t$ and $x$ be indeterminates, let $ϕ(x)=x^2+t\in\mathbb Q(t)[x]$, and for every positive integer $n$ let $Φ_n(t,x)$ denote the $n^{\text{th}}$ dynatomic polynomial of $ϕ$. Let $G_n$ be the Galois group of $Φ_n$ over the function field $\mathbb Q(t)$, and for $c\in\mathbb Q$ let $G_{n,c}$ be the Galois group of the specialized polynomial $Φ_n(c,x)$. It follows from Hilbert's irreducibility theorem that for fixed $n$ we have $G_n\cong G_{n,c}$ for every $c$ outside a thin set $E_n\subset\mathbb Q$. By earlier work of Morton (for $n=3$) and the present author (for $n=4$), it is known that $E…
Schinzel's Hypothesis H is a general conjecture in number theory on prime values of polynomials that generalizes, e.g., the twin prime conjecture and Dirichlet's theorem on primes in arithmetic progression. We prove an arithmetic analog of this conjecture for polynomial rings over pseudo algebraically closed fields. This implies results over large finite fields. A main tool in the proof is an irreducibility theorems à la Hilbert.
We review, under a perspective which appears different from previous ones, the so-called Hilbert Property (HP) for an algebraic variety (over a number field); this is linked to Hilbert's Irreducibility Theorem and has important implications, for instance towards the Inverse Galois Problem. We shall observe that the HP is in a sense `opposite' to the Chevalley-Weil Theorem, which concerns unramified covers; this link shall immediately entail the result that the HP can possibly hold only for simply connected varieties (in the appropriate sense). In turn, this leads to new counterexamples to the …
A number field $K$ is Hilbert-Speiser if all of its tame abelian extensions $L/K$ admit NIB (normal integral basis). It is known that $\mathbb{Q}$ is the only such field, but when we restrict $\text{Gal}(L/K)$ to be a given group $G$, the classification of $G$-Hilbert-Speiser fields is far from complete. In this paper, we present new results on so-called $G$-Leopoldt fields. In their definition, NIB is replaced by ``weak NIB'' (defined below). Most of our results are negative, in the sense that they strongly limit the class of $G$-Leopoldt fields for some particular groups $G$, sometimes even …
We classify the finite primitive permutation groups which have a cyclic subgroup with two orbits. This extends classical topics in permutation group theory, and has arithmetic consequences. By a theorem of C. L. Siegel, affine algebraic curves with infinitely many integral points are parametrized by rational functions whose monodromy groups have this property. We classify the possibilities of these monodromy groups, and give an application to Hilbert's irreducibility theorem.
The central topic is this question: is a given $k$-étale algebra $\prod_lE_l/k$ the specialization of a given $k$-cover $f:X\rightarrow B$ at some point $t_0\in B(k)$? Our main tool is a {\it twisting lemma} that reduces the problem to finding $k$-rational points on a certain $k$-variety. Previous forms of this twisting lemma are generalized and unified. New applications are given: a Grunwald form of Hilbert's irreducibility theorem over number fields, a non-Galois variant of the Tchebotarev theorem for function fields over finite fields, some general specialization properties of covers over P…
Let $k$ be a finitely generated field, let $X$ be an algebraic variety and $G$ a linear algebraic group, both defined over $k$. Suppose $G$ acts on $X$ and every element of a Zariski-dense semigroup $Γ\subset G(k)$ has a rational fixed point in $X(k)$. We then deduce, under some mild technical assumptions, the existence of a rational map $G\to X$, defined over $k$, sending each element $g\in G$ to a fixed point for $g$. The proof makes use of a recent result of Ferretti and Zannier on diophantine equations involving linear recurrences. As a by-product of the proof, we obtain a version of the c…
In this paper, we determine mod $2$ Galois representations $\barρ_{ψ,2}:G_K:={\rm Gal}(\bar{K}/K)\longrightarrow {\rm GSp}_4(\mathbb{F}_2)$ associated to the mirror motives of rank 4 with pure weight 3 coming from the Dwork quintic family $$X^5_0+X^5_1+X^5_2+X^5_3+X^5_4-5ψX_0X_1X_2X_3X_4=0,\ ψ\in K$$ defined over a number field $K$ under the irreducibility condition of the quintic trinomial $f_ψ$ below. Applying this result, when $K=F$ is a totally real field, for some at most qaudratic totally real extension $M/F$, we prove that $\barρ_{ψ,2}|_{G_M}$ is associated to a Hilbert-Siegel modular H…
