We extend the Siegel-Walfisz theorem to a family of integer sequences that are characterized by constraints on the size of the prime factors. Besides prime powers, this family includes smooth numbers, almost primes and practical numbers.
We investigate the first moment of primes in progressions $$ \sum_{\substack{q\leq x/N \\ (q,a)=1}} \Big(ψ(x; q, a) - \frac x{φ(q)}\Big) $$ as $x, N \to \infty$. We show unconditionally that, when $a=1$, there is a significant bias towards negative values, uniformly for $N\leq {\rm e}^{c\sqrt{\log x}}$. The proof combines recent results of the authors on the first moment and on the error term in the dispersion method. More generally, for $a \in \mathbb Z\setminus\{0\}$ we prove estimates that take into account the potential existence (or inexistence) of Landau-Siegel zeros.
The Green-Tao-Ziegler theorem provides asymptotics for the number of prime tuples of the form $(ψ_1(n),\ldots,ψ_t(n))$ when $n$ ranges among the integer vectors of a convex body $K\subset [-N,N]^d$ and $Ψ=(ψ_1,\ldots,ψ_t)$ is a system of affine-linear forms whose linear coefficients remain bounded (in terms of $N$). In the $t=1$ case, the Siegel-Walfisz theorem shows that the asymptotic still holds when the coefficients vary like a power of $\log N$. We prove a higher-dimensional (i.e. $t>1$) version of this fact. We provide natural examples where our theorem goes beyond the one of Green and T…
We prove Siegel-Walfisz type theorems (over long and short intervals) for the Fourier coefficients of certain automorphic $L$-functions and Rankin-Selberg $L$-functions over number fields.
Let $A$ be a subset of primes up to $x$. If we assume $A$ is well-distributed (in the Siegel-Walfisz sense) in any arithmetic progressions to moduli $q\leqslant(\log x)^c$ for any $c>0$, then the sumset $A+A$ has density 1/2 in the natural numbers as $x$ tends to infinity, which also yields almost all even positive integers could be represented as the sums of two primes in $A$ as $x$ tends to infinity. This result, improving the previous results in such special case, could be compared with the classical estimation for the exceptional set of binary Goldbach problem.
Let $K$ be an imaginary quadratic field with discriminant $d_K\leq-7$. We deal with problems of constructing normal bases between abelian extensions of $K$ by making use of singular values of Siegel functions. First, we show that a criterion achieved from the Frobenius determinant relation enables us to find normal bases of ring class fields of orders of bounded conductors depending on $d_K$ over $K$. Next, denoting by $K_{(N)}$ the ray class field modulo $N$ of $K$ for an integer $N\geq2$ we consider the field extension $K_{(p^2m)}/K_{(pm)}$ for a prime $p\geq5$ and an integer $m\geq1$ relati…
The classical Brauer-Siegel theorem states that if $k$ runs through the sequence of normal extensions of $\mathbb{Q}$ such that $n_k/\log|D_k|\to 0,$ then $\log h_k R_k/\log \sqrt{|D_k|}\to 1.$ First, in this paper we obtain the generalization of the Brauer-Siegel and Tsfasman-Vlăduţ theorems to the case of almost normal number fields. Second, using the approach of Hajir and Maire, we construct several new examples concerning the Brauer-Siegel ratio in asymptotically good towers of number fields. These examples give smaller values of the Brauer-Siegel ratio than those given by Tsfasman and Vlă…
It is known that in the case of hyperelliptic curves the Shafarevich conjecture can be made effective, i.e., for any number field k and any finite set of places S of k, one can effectively compute the set of isomorphism classes of hyperelliptic curves over k with good reduction outside S. We show here that an extension of this result to an effective Shafarevich conjecture for Jacobians of hyperelliptic curves of genus g would imply an effective version of Siegel's theorem for integral points on hyperelliptic curves of genus g.
Siegel proved that every totally positive element of a number field K is the sum of four squares, so in particular the Pythagoras number is uniformly bounded across number fields. The p-adic Kochen operator provides a p-adic analogue of squaring, and a certain localisation of the ring generated by this operator consists of precisely the totally p-integral elements of K. We use this to formulate and prove a p-adic analogue of Siegel's theorem, by introducing the p-Pythagoras number of a general field, and showing that this number is uniformly bounded across number fields. We also generally stud…
Let $p$ be an odd prime, $N$ a square-free odd positive integer prime to $p$, $π$ a $p$-ordinary cohomological irreducible cuspidal automorphic representation of $\mathrm{GSp}_4(\mathbb{A}_\mathbb{Q})$ of principal level $N$ and Iwahori level at $p$. Using a $p$-integral version of Rallis inner product formula and modularity theorems for $\mathrm{GSp}_{4/\mathbb{Q}}$ and $\mathrm{U}_{4/\mathbb{Q}}$, we establish an identity between the $p$-part of the critical value at $1$ of the degree $5$ $L$-function of $π$ twisted by the non-trivial quadratic Dirichlet character $ξ$ associated to the exten…
Let $j(z)$ be the modular $j$-invariant function. Let $τ$ be an algebraic number in the complex upper half plane $\mathbb{H}$. It was proved by Schneider and Siegel that if $τ$ is not a CM point, i.e., $[\mathbb{Q}(τ):\mathbb{Q}]\neq2$, then $j(τ)$ is transcendental. Let $f$ be a harmonic weak Maass form of weight $0$ on $Γ_0(N)$. In this paper, we consider an extension of the results of Schneider and Siegel to a family of values of $f$ on Hecke orbits of $τ$. For a positive integer $m$, let $T_m$ denote the $m$-th Hecke operator. Suppose that the coefficients of the principal part of $f$ at t…
Let $K$ be a number field, and let $W$ be a subspace of $K^N$, $N \geq 1$. Let $V_1,...,V_M$ be subspaces of $K^N$ of dimension less than dimension of $W$. We prove the existence of a point of small height in $W \setminus \bigcup_{i=1}^M V_i$, providing an explicit upper bound on the height of such a point in terms of heights of $W$ and $V_1,...,V_M$. Our main tool is a counting estimate we prove for the number of points of a subspace of $K^N$ inside of an adelic cube. As corollaries to our main result we derive an explicit bound on the height of a non-vanishing point for a decomposable form a…
We study Hodge bundles on Siegel varieties and their various extensions to smooth toroidal compactifications. Precisely, we construct a canonical Hodge bundle on an arbitrary Siegel variety so that the holomorphic tangent bundle can be embedded into the Hodge bundle, and we observe that the Bergman metric on the Siegel variety is compatible with the induced Hodge metric. Therefore we obtain the asymptotic estimate of the Bergman metric explicitly. Depending on these properties and the uniformitarian of Kähler-Einstein manifold, we study extensions of the tangent bundle over any smooth toroidal…
Let p be a fixed prime number. Let K be a totally real number field of discriminant D\_K and let T\_K be the torsion group of the Galois group of the maximal abelian p-ramified pro-p-extension of K (under Leopoldt's conjecture). We conjecture the existence of a constant C\_p>0 such that log(\#T\_K) $\le$ C\_p log(\sqrt(D\_K)) when K varies in some specified families (e.g., fields of fixed degree). In some sense, we suggest the existence of a p-adic analogue, of the classical Brauer--Siegel Theorem, wearing here on the valuation of the residue at s=1 (essentially equal to \#T\_K) of the p-adic …
Let f(t,X) be an irreducible polynomial over the field of rational functions k(t), where k is a number field. Let O be the ring of integers of k. Hilbert's irreducibility theorem gives infinitely many integral specializations of t to values a in O such that f(a,X) is still irreducible. In this paper we study the set Red(O) of those a in O with f(a,X) reducible. We show that Red(O) is a finite set under rather weak assumptions. In particular, several results of K. Langmann, obtained by Diophantine approximation techniques, appear as special cases of some of our results. Our method is completely…
We consider a mod 7 Galois representation attached to a genus 2 Siegel cuspforms of level 1 and weight 28 and using some of its Fourier coefficients and eigenvalues computed by N. Skoruppa and the classification of maximal subgroups of PGSp(4,p) we show that its image is as large as possible. This gives a realization of PGSp(4,7) as a Galois group over $\Q$ and the corresponding number field provides a non-solvable extension of $\Q$ which ramifies only at 7.
We present the extensions of the Siegel integral formula ([10]), which counts the vectors of the random lattice, to the context of counting its sublattices and flags. Perhaps surprisingly, it turns out that many quantities of interest diverge to infinity.
The paper has two purposes. First, we start to develop a theory of infinite global fields, i.e., of infinite algebraic extensions either of ${\mathbb{Q}}$ or of ${\mathbb{F}}_r(t)$. We produce a series of invariants of such fields, and we introduce and study a kind of zeta-function for them. Second, for sequences of number fields with growing discriminant we prove generalizations of the Odlyzko--Serre bounds and of the Brauer--Siegel theorem, taking into account non-archimedean places. This leads to asymptotic bounds on the ratio ${{\log hR}/\log\sqrt{| D|}}$ valid without the standard assumpt…
In this work, we calculate the trace of a Hecke correspondance composed with a power of the Frobenius endomorphism on the fibre of the intersection complexes of the Baily-Borel compactification of a Siegel modular variety. Our main tool is Pink's theorem about the restriction to the strata of the Baily-Borel compactification of the direct image of a local system on the Shimura variety. To use this theorem, we give a new construction of the intermediate extension of a pure perverse sheaf as a weight truncation of the full direct image. More generally, we are able to define analogs in positive c…
Let E/F be a CM field split above a finite place v of F, let l be a rational prime number which is prime to v, and let S be the set of places of E dividing lv. If E_S denotes a maximal algebraic extension of E unramified outside S, and if u is a place of E dividing v, we show that any field embedding E_S \to \bar{E_u} has a dense image. The "unramified outside S" number fields we use are cut out from the l-adic cohomology of the "simple" Shimura varieties studied by Kottwitz and Harris-Taylor. The main ingredients of the proof are then the local Langlands correspondence for GL_n, the main glob…
We generalize the classical theory of periodic continued fractions (PCFs) over ${\mathbf Z}$ to rings ${\mathcal O}$ of $S$-integers in a number field. Let ${\mathcal B}=\{β, {β^*}\}$ be the multi-set of roots of a quadratic polynomial in ${\mathcal O}[x]$. We show that PCFs $P=[b_1,\ldots,b_N,\bar{a_1\ldots ,a_k}]$ of type $(N,k)$ potentially converging to a limit in ${\mathcal B}$ are given by ${\mathcal O}$-points on an affine variety $V:=V({\mathcal B})_{N,k}$ generically of dimension $N+k-2$. We give the equations of $V$ in terms of the continuant polynomials of Wallis and Euler. The inte…
