Let E/F be a CM field split above a finite place v of F, let l be a rational prime number which is prime to v, and let S be the set of places of E dividing lv. If E_S denotes a maximal algebraic extension of E unramified outside S, and if u is a place of E dividing v, we show that any field embedding E_S \to \bar{E_u} has a dense image.
The "unramified outside S" number fields we use are cut out from the l-adic cohomology of the "simple" Shimura varieties studied by Kottwitz and Harris-Taylor. The main ingredients of the proof are then the local Langlands correspondence for GL_n, the main global theorem of Harris-Taylor, and the construction of automorphic representations with prescribed local behaviours.
We explain how stronger results would follow from the knowledge of some expected properties of Siegel modular forms, and we discuss the case of the Galois group of a maximal algebraic extension of Q unramified outside a single prime p and infinity.
We give an algorithm that constructs a minimal set of polynomials defining all extension of a $(π)$-adic field with given, inertia degree, ramification index, discriminant, ramification polygon, and residual polynomials of the segments of the ramification polygon.
Ramification invariants are necessary, but not in general sufficient, to determine the Galois module structure of ideals in local number field extensions. This insufficiency is associated with elementary abelian extensions, where one can define a refined ramification filtration -- one with more ramification breaks [JNTB 17 (2005)]. The first refined break number comes from the usual ramification filtration and is therefore necessary. Here we study the second refined break number.
We give a criterion whether given Eisenstein polynomials over a local field K define the same extension over K in terms of a certain non-Archimedean metric on the set of polynomials. The criterion and its proof depend on ramification theory.
We give a brief re-exposition of the theory due to Pauli and Sinclair of ramification polygons of Eisenstein polynomials over p-adic fields, their associated residual polynomials and an algorithm to produce all extensions for a given ramification polygon. We supplement this with an algorithm to produce all ramification polygons of a given degree, and hence we can produce all totally ramified extensions of a given degree.
The theory of p-ramification, regarding the Galois group of the maximal pro-p-extension of a number field K, unramified outside p and $\infty$, is well known including numerical experiments with PARI/GP programs. The case of ``incomplete p-ramification'' (i.e., when the set S of ramified places is a strict subset of the set P of the p-places) is, on the contrary, mostly unknown in a theoretical point of view. We give, in a first part, a way to compute, for any S $\le$ P, the structure of the Galois group of the maximal S-ramified abelian pro-p-extension H\_(K,S) of any field K given by means o…
We give two specializations of Krasner's mass formula. The first formula yields the number of extensions of a $\mathfrak{p}$-adic field with given, inertia degree, ramification index, discriminant, and ramification polygon. We then refine this formula further to the case where an additional invariant related to the residual polynomials of the segments of the ramification polygon is given.
We consider the class of complete discretely valued fields such that the residue field is of prime characteristic p and the cardinality of a $p$-base is 1. This class includes two-dimensional local and local-global fields. A new definition of ramification filtration for such fields is given. It appears that a Hasse-Herbrand type functions can be defined with all the usual properties. Therefore, a theory of upper ramification groups, as well as the ramification theory of infinite extensions, can be developed. Next, we consider an equal characteristic two-dimensional local field $K$. We introduc…
We consider p-extensions of number fields such that the filtration of the Galois group by higher ramification groups is of prescribed finite length. We extend well-known properties of tame extensions to this more general setting; for instance, we show that these towers, when infinite, are ``asymptotically good'' (an explicit bound for the root discriminant is given). We study the difficult problem of bounding the relation-rank of the Galois groups in question. Results of Gordeev and Wingberg imply that the relation-rank can tend to infinity when the set of ramified primes is fixed but the leng…
We study the minimal number of ramified primes in Galois extensions of rational function fields over finite fields with prescribed finite Galois group. In particular, we obtain a general conjecture in analogy with the well studied case of number fields, which we establish for abelian, symmetric and alternating groups in many cases.
Quaternion extensions are often the smallest extensions to exhibit special properties. In the setting of the Hasse-Arf Theorem, for instance, quaternion extensions are used to illustrate the fact that upper ramification numbers need not be integers. These extensions play a similar role in Galois module structure. To better understand these examples, we catalog the ramification filtrations that are possible in totally ramified extensions of dyadic number fields. Interestingly, we find that the catalog depends, for sharp lower bounds, upon the refined ramification filtration, which is associated…
Given a hilbertian field $k$ of characteristic zero and a finite Galois extension $E/k(T)$ with group $G$ such that $E/k$ is regular, we produce some specializations of $E/k(T)$ at points $t_0 \in \mathbb{P}^1(k)$ which have the same Galois group but also specified inertia groups at finitely many given primes. This result has two main applications. Firstly we conjoin it with previous works to obtain Galois extensions of $\mathbb{Q}$ of various finite groups with specified local behavior - ramified or unramified - at finitely many given primes. Secondly, in the case $k$ is a number field, we pr…
We completely determine which extension of local fields satisfies Fontaine's property (Pm) for a given real number m. A key ingredient of the proof is the local class field theory of Serre and Hazewinkel.
Let $G$ be a finite nilpotent group and $K$ a number field with torsion relatively prime to the order of $G$. By a sequence of central group extensions with cyclic kernel we obtain an upper bound for the minimum number of prime ideals of $K$ ramified in a Galois extension of $K$ with Galois group isomorphic to $G$. This sharpens and extends results of Geyer and Jarden and of Plans. Also we confirm Boston's conjecture on the minimum number of ramified primes for a family of central extensions by the Schur multiplicator.
Let $K$ be a number field and $S$ a set of primes of $K$. We write $K_S/K$ for the maximal extension of $K$ unramified outside $S$ and $G_{K,S}$ for its Galois group. In this paper, we answer the following question under some assumptions: "For $i=1,2$, let $K_i$ be a number field, $S_i$ a (sufficiently large) set of primes of $K_i$ and $σ:G_{K_1,S_1}\to G_{K_2,S_2}$ an isomorphism. Is $σ$ induced by a unique isomorphism between $K_{1,S_1}/K_1$ and $K_{2,S_2}/K_2$?" Here the main assumption is about the Dirichlet density of $S_i$.
Let $L$ be a number field. For a given prime $p$ we define integers $α_{p}^{L}$ and $β_{p}^{L}$ with some interesting arithmetic properties. For instance, $β_{p}^{L}$ is equal to $1$ whenever $p$ does not ramify in $L$ and $α_{p}^{L}$ is divisible by $p$ whenever $p$ is wildly ramified in $L$. The aforementioned properties, although interesting, follow easily from definitions; however a more interesting application of these invariants is the fact that they completely characterize the Dedekind zeta function of $L$. Moreover, if the residue class mod $p$ of $α_{p}^{L}$ is not zero for all $p$ th…
Given a natural number n and a number field K, we show the existence of an integer \ell_0 such that for any prime number \ell\geq \ell_0, there exists a finite extension F/K, unramified in all places above \ell, together with a principally polarized abelian variety A of dimension n over F such that the resulting \ell-torsion representation ρ_{A,\ell} from G_F to GSp(A[\ell](\bar{F})) is surjective and everywhere tamely ramified. In particular, we realize GSp_{2n}(\mathbb{F}_\ell) as the Galois group of a finite tame extension of number fields F'/F such that F is unramified above \ell.
Let $K$ be a totally real field. In this article we present an asymptotic formula for the number of Hilbert modular cusp forms $f$ with given ramification at every place $v$ of $K$. When $v$ is an infinite place, this means specifying the weight of $f$ at $k$, and when $v$ is finite, this means specifying the restriction to inertia of the local Weil-Deligne representation attached to $f$ at $v$. Our formula shows that with essentially finitely many exceptions, the cusp forms of $K$ exhibit every possible sort of ramification behavior, thus generalizing a theorem of Khare and Prasad. From this …
The inverse Galois problem is concerned with finding a Galois extension of a field $K$ with given Galois group. In this paper we consider the particular case where the base field is $K=\F_p(t)$. We give a conjectural formula for the minimal number of primes, both finite and infinite, ramified in $G$-extensions of $K$, and give theoretical and computational proofs for many cases of this conjecture.
Let $k$ be a complete, nontrivially valued non-archimedean field. Given a finite morphism of quasi-smooth $k$-analytic curves that admit finite triangulations, we provide upper bounds for the number of connected components of the ramification locus in terms of topological invariants of the source curve such as its topological genus, the number of points in the boundary and the number of open ends.
Let $K$ be a number field or a function field of characteristic 0. If $K$ is a number field, assume the $abc$-conjecture for $K$. We prove a variant of Zsigmondy's theorem for ramified primes in preimage fields of rational functions in $K(x)$ that are not postcritically finite. For example, suppose $K$ is a number field and $f\in K[x]$ is not postcritically finite, and let $K_n$ be the field generated by the $n$th iterated preimages under $f$ of $β\in K$. We show that for all large $n$, there is a prime of $K$ that ramifies in $K_n$ and does not ramify in $K_m$ for any $m<n$.
In previous works, we described algorithms to compute the number field cut out by the mod ell representation attached to a modular form of level N=1. In this article, we explain how these algorithms can be generalised to forms of higher level N. As an application, we compute the Galois representations attached to a few forms which are supersingular or admit a companion mod ell with ell=13 (and soon ell=41), and we obtain previously unknown number fields of degree ell+1 whose Galois closure has Galois group PGL(2,ell) and a root discriminant that is so small that it beats records for such numbe…
We compute the higher ramification groups and the Artin conductors of radical extensions of the rationals. As an application, we give formulas for their discriminant (using the conductor-discriminant formula). The interest in such number fields is due to the fact that they are among the simplest non-abelian extensions of the rationals (and so not classified by Class Field Theory). We show that this extensions have non integer jumps in the superior ramification groups, contrarily to the case of abelian extensions (as prescribed by Hasse-Arf theorem).
The formulas for local root numbers of abelian varieties of dimension one are known. In this paper we treat the simplest unknown case in dimension two by considering a curve of genus 2 defined over a $5$-adic field such that the inertia acts on the first $\ell$-adic cohomology group through the largest possible finite quotient, isomorphic to $C_5\rtimes C_8$. We give a few criteria to identify such curves and prove a formula for their local root numbers in terms of invariants associated to a Weierstrass equation.
- Let p be a prime number and K an algebraic number field. What is the arithmetic structure of Galois extensions L/K having p-adic analytic Galois group $Γ$ = Gal(L/K)? The celebrated Tame Fontaine-Mazur conjecture predicts that such extensions are either deeply ramified (at some prime dividing p) or ramified at an infinite number of primes. In this work, we take up a study (initiated by Boston) of this type of question under the assumption that L is Galois over some subfield k of K such that [K : k] is a prime = p. Letting $σ$ be a generator of Gal(K/k), we study the constraints posed on the …
We prove a large finite field version of the Boston--Markin conjecture on counting Galois extensions of the rational function field with a given Galois group and the smallest possible number of ramified primes. Our proof involves a study of structure groups of (direct products of) racks.
Let $K$ be a number field and $S$ a finite set of places of $K$. We study the kernels $\Sha_S$ of maps $H^2(G_S,\fq_p) \rightarrow \oplus_{v\in S} H^2(\G_v,\fq_p)$. There is a natural injection $\Sha_S \hookrightarrow \CyB_S$, into the dual $\CyB_S$ of a certain readily computable Kummer group $V_S$, which is always an isomorphism in the wild case. The tame case is much more mysterious. Our main result is that given a finite $X$ coprime to $p$, there exists a finite set of places $S$ coprime to $p$ such that $\Sha_{S\cup X} \stackrel{\simeq}{\hookrightarrow} \CyB_{S\cup X} \stackrel{\simeq}{\t…
Let $K$ be a number field and $S$ a set of primes of $K$. We write $K_S/K$ for the maximal extension of $K$ unramified outside $S$ and $G_{K,S}$ for its Galois group. In this paper, we prove the following generalization of the Neukirch-Uchida theorem under some assumptions: "For $i=1,2$, let $K_i$ be a number field and $S_i$ a set of primes of $K_i$. If $G_{K_1,S_1}$ and $G_{K_2,S_2}$ are isomorphic, then $K_1$ and $K_2$ are isomorphic." Here the main assumption is that the Dirichlet density of $S_i$ is not zero for at least one $i$. A key step of the proof is to recover group-theoretically th…
This paper focuses on a refinement of the inverse Galois problem. We explore what finite groups appear as the Galois group of an extension of the rational numbers in which only a predetermined set of primes may ramify. After presenting new results regarding extensions in which only a single finite prime ramifies, we move on to studying the more complex situation in which multiple primes from a finite set of arbitrary size may ramify. We then continue by examining a conjecture of Harbater that the minimal number of generators of the Galois group of a tame, Galois extension of the rational numbe…
In this paper we study lower ramification numbers of power series tangent to the identity that are defined over fields of positive characteristics $p$. Let $g$ be such a series, then $g$ has a fixed point at the origin and the corresponding lower ramification numbers of $g$ are then, up to a constant, the degree of the first non-linear term of $p$-power iterates of $g$. The result is a complete characterization of power series $g$ having ramification numbers of the form ${2(1+p+\dots+p^n)}$. Furthermore, in proving said characterization we explicitly compute the first significant terms of $g$ …
We compare two maps that arise in study of the cohomology of number fields with ramification restricted to a finite set S of primes. One of these maps, which we call an S-reciprocity map, interpolates the values of cup products in S-ramified cohomology. In the case of p-ramified cohomology of the pth cyclotomic field for an odd prime p, we use this to exhibit an intriguing relationship between particular values of the cup product on cyclotomic p-units. We then consider higher analogues of the S-reciprocity map and relate their cokernels to the graded quotients in augmentation filtrations of Iw…
For a rational prime p, let k be a perfect field of characteristic p, K be a finite totally ramified extension of Frac(W(k)) of degree e and r be a non-negative integer satisfying r<p-1. In this article, we prove the upper numbering ramification group G^(j) for j>u(K,r,n) acts trivially on the p^n-torsion semi-stable G_K-representations with the Hodge-Tate weights in {0,...,r}, where u(K,0,n)=0, u(K,1,n)=1+e(n+1/(p-1)) and u(K,r,n)=1-p^{-n}+e(n+r/(p-1)) for r>1.
Given a finite endomorphism $φ$ of a variety $X$ defined over the field of fractions $K$ of a Dedekind domain, we study the extension $K(φ^{-\infty}(α)) : = \bigcup_{n \geq 1} K(φ^{-n}(α))$ generated by the preimages of $α$ under all iterates of $φ$. In particular when $φ$ is post-critically finite, i.e., there exists a non-empty, Zariski-open $W \subseteq X$ such that $φ^{-1}(W) \subseteq W$ and $φ: W \to X$ is étale, we prove that $K(φ^{-\infty}(α))$ is ramified over only finitely many primes of $K$. This provides a large supply of infinite extensions with restricted ramification, and genera…
Consider an elliptic curve $E$ over a number field $K$. Suppose that $E$ has supersingular reduction at some prime $\mathfrak{p}$ of $K$ lying above the rational prime $p$. We completely classify the valuations of the $p^n$-torsion points of $E$ by the valuation of a coefficient of the $p^{\text{th}}$ division polynomial. We apply this description to find the minimum necessary ramification at $\mathfrak{p}$ in order for $E$ to have a point of exact order $p^n$. Using this bound we show that sporadic points on the modular curve $X_1(p^n)$ cannot correspond to supersingular elliptic curves witho…
Let $k_\infty$ be the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of an algebraic number field $k$. We denote by $S$ a finite set of prime numbers which does not contain $p$, and $S(k_\infty)$ the set of primes of $k_\infty$ lying above $S$. In the present paper, we will study the structure of the Galois group $\mathcal{X}_S (k_\infty)$ of the maximal pro-$p$ extension unramified outside $S (k_\infty)$ over $k_\infty$. We mainly consider the question whether $\mathcal{X}_S (k_\infty)$ is a non-abelian free pro-$p$ group or not. In the former part, we treat the case when $k$ is an imaginary quadratic f…
Let F be a totally real number field, n a prime integer, and G a unitary group of rank n defined over F that is compact at every infinite place. We prove an asymptotic formula for the number of cuspidal automorphic representations of G whose factors at finitely many places are prescribed up to inertia. The results and the methods used are a generalization to this setting of those used by Weinstein for GL_2.
Let k be a field of characteristic zero, let X be a geometrically integral k-variety of dimension n and let K be its field of fractions. Under the assumption that K contains all r-th roots of unity for an integer r, we prove that, given an element in H^m(K, Z/r), it becomes unramified in the extension of K obtained by adding r-th roots of some n^2 functions in K.
Let k be a complete discrete valuation field of equal characteristic p>0. Using the tools of p-adic differential modules, we define refined Artin and Swan conductors for a representation of the absolute Galois group $G_k$ with finite local monodromy; this leads to a description of the subquotients of the ramification filtration on $G_k$. We prove that our definition of the refined Swan conductors coincide with that is given by Saito, which uses etale cohomology. We also study its relation with the toroidal variation of the Swan conductors.
The tame Gras-Munnier Theorem gives a criterion for the existence of a ${\mathbb Z}/{\mathbb Z}$-extension of a number field $K$ ramified at exactly a set $S$ of places of $K$ prime to $p$ (allowing real Archimedean places when $p=2$) in terms of the existence of a dependence relation on the Frobenius elements of these places in a certain governing extension. We give a new and simpler proof of this theorem that also relates the set of such extensions of $K$ to the set of these dependence relations. After presenting this proof, we then reprove the key Proposition 3 using the more sophisticated …
Let p be a prime number. It is not known if every finite p-group of rank n>1 can be realized as a Galois group over Q with no more than n ramified primes. We prove that this can be done for the family of finite p-groups which contains all the cyclic groups of p-power order, and is closed under direct products, wreath products, and rank preserving homomorphic images. This family contains the Sylow p-subgroups of the symmetric groups and of the classical groups over finite fields of characteristic not p. On the other hand, it does not contain all finite p-groups.
Let p be an odd prime, K a finite extension of Q_p, G=Gal(\bar K/K) the Galois group and e=e(K/Q_p) the ramification index. Suppose T is a p^n torsion representation such that T is isomorphic to a quotient of two G-stable Z_p-lattices in a semi-stable representation with Hodge-Tate weights in {0,...,r}. We prove that there exists a constant μexplicitly depending on n, e and r such that the upper numbering ramification group G^{(μ)} acts on T trivially.
It is now known that for any prime p and any finite semiabelian p-group G, there exists a (tame) realization of G as a Galois group over the rationals Q with exactly d = d(G) ramified primes, where d(G) is the minimal number of generators of G, which solves the minimal ramification problem for finite semiabelian p-groups. We generalize this result to obtain a theorem on finite semiabelian groups and derive the solution to the minimal ramification problem for a certain family of semiabelian groups that includes all finite nilpotent semiabelian groups G. Finally, we give some indication of the d…
Given a branched cover $f:Y\to X$ between smooth projective curves over a non-archimedian mixed-characteristic local field and an open rigid disk $D\subset X$, we study the question under which conditions the inverse image $f^{-1}(D)$ is again an open disk. More generally, if the cover $f$ varies in an analytic family, is this true at least for some member of the family? Our main result gives a criterion for this to happen.
Consider tuples of separable algebras over a common local or global number field, related to each other by specified resolvent constructions. Under the assumption that all ramification is tame, simple group-theoretic calculations give best possible divisibility relations among the discriminants. We show that for many resolvent constructions, these divisibility relations continue to hold even in the presence of wild ramification.
Given an integral p-adic variety, we observe that if the integral Hodge--de Rham spectral sequence behaves nicely, then the special fiber knows the Hodge numbers of the generic fiber. Applying recent advancements of integral p-adic Hodge theory, we show that such a nice behavior is guaranteed if the p-adic variety can be lifted to an analogue of second Witt vectors and satisfies some bound on dimension and ramification index. This is a (ramified) mixed characteristic analogue of results due to Deligne--Illusie and Fontaine--Messing. Lastly, we discuss an example illustrating the necessity of t…
Let $\mathcal K$ be a field of formal Laurent series with coefficients in a finite field of characteristic $p$, $\mathcal G_{<p}$ -- the maximal quotient of $\operatorname{Gal} (\mathcal K_{sep}/\mathcal K)$ of period $p$ and nilpotent class $<p$ and $\{\mathcal G_{<p}^{(v)}\}_{v\geqslant 0}$ -- its filtration by ramification subgroups in the upper numbering. Let $\mathcal G_{<p}=G(\mathcal L)$ be the identification of nilpotent Artin-Schreier theory: here $G(\mathcal L)$ is the group obtained from a suitable profinite Lie $\mathbb{F}_p$-algebra $\mathcal L$ via the Campbell-Hausdorff composit…
For a number field $F$ and a prime number $p$, the $\mathbb{Z}_p$-torsion module of the Galois group of the maximal abelian pro-$p$ extension of $F$ unramified outside $p$ over $F$, denoted as $\mathcal{T}_p(F)$, is an important subject in abelian $p$-ramification theory. In this paper we study the group $\mathcal{T}_2(F)=\mathcal{T}_2(m)$ of the quadratic field $F=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{ m})$. Firstly, assuming $m>0$, we prove an explicit $4$-rank formula for $\mathcal{T}_2(-m)$. Furthermore, applying this formula, we obtain the $4$-rank density of $\mathcal{T}_2$-groups of imaginary quadratic fiel…
Let $π: Y \to X$ be a branched $\mathbf{Z}/p \mathbf{Z}$-cover of smooth, projective, geometrically connected curves over a perfect field of characteristic $p>0$. We investigate the relationship between the $a$-numbers of $Y$ and $X$ and the ramification of the map $π$. This is analogous to the relationship between the genus (respectively $p$-rank) of $Y$ and $X$ given the Riemann-Hurwitz (respectively Deuring--Shafarevich) formula. Except in special situations, the $a$-number of $Y$ is not determined by the $a$-number of $X$ and the ramification of the cover, so we instead give bounds on the …
Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>0$ and $C$ a connected nonsingular projective curve over $k$ with genus $g \geq 2$. Let $(C,G)$ be a "big action", i.e. a pair $(C,G)$ where $G$ is a $p$-subgroup of the $k$-automorphism group of $C$ such that$\frac{|G|}{g} >\frac{2 p}{p-1}$. We denote by $G_2$ the second ramification group of $G$ at the unique ramification point of the cover $C \to C/G$. The aim of this paper is to describe the big actions whose $G_2$ is $p$-elementary abelian. In particular, we obtain a structure theorem by considering the $k$-algebra generated by…
