Let $K$ be a number field, and let $W$ be a subspace of $K^N$, $N \geq 1$. Let $V_1,...,V_M$ be subspaces of $K^N$ of dimension less than dimension of $W$. We prove the existence of a point of small height in $W \setminus \bigcup_{i=1}^M V_i$, providing an explicit upper bound on the height of such a point in terms of heights of $W$ and $V_1,...,V_M$. Our main tool is a counting estimate we prove for the number of points of a subspace of $K^N$ inside of an adelic cube. As corollaries to our main result we derive an explicit bound on the height of a non-vanishing point for a decomposable form and an effective subspace extension lemma.
Padé approximations and Siegel's lemma are widely used tools in Diophantine approximation theory. This work has evolved from the attempts to improve Baker-type linear independence measures, either by using the Bombieri-Vaaler version of Siegel's lemma to sharpen the estimates of Padé-type approximations, or by finding completely explicit expressions for the yet unknown 'twin type' Hermite-Padé approximations. The appropriate homogeneous matrix equation representing both methods has an $M \times (L+1)$ coefficient matrix, where $M \le L$. The homogeneous solution vectors of this matrix equation…
We give a sharpened form of Siegel Lemma's w. r. t. the maximum norm. This implies a new lower bound on the greatest element of a sum-distinct set of positive integers (Erdös-Moser problem). The main tools are Minkowski's theorem on successive minima and the Busemann theorem from convex geometry.
Consider a real matrix $Θ$ consisting of rows $(θ_{i,1},\ldots,θ_{i,n})$, for $1\leq i\leq m$. The problem of making the system linear forms $x_{1}θ_{i,1}+\cdots+x_{n}θ_{i,n}-y_{i}$ for integers $x_{j},y_{i}$ small naturally induces an ordinary and a uniform exponent of approximation, denoted by $w(Θ)$ and $\widehat{w}(Θ)$ respectively. For $m=1$, a sharp lower bound for the ratio $w(Θ)/\widehat{w}(Θ)$ was recently established by Marnat and Moshchevitin. We give a short, new proof of this result upon a hypothesis on the best approximation integer vectors associated to $Θ$. Our conditional resu…
Let $p$ be a prime, and let $Γ=\Sp_g(\Z)$ be the Siegel modular group of genus $g$. We study $p$-adic families of zeta functions and Siegel modular forms. $L$-functions of Siegel modular forms are described in terms of motivic $L$-functions attached to $\Sp_g$, and their analytic properties are given. Critical values for the spinor $L$-functions and $p$-adic constructions are discussed. Rankin's lemma of higher genus is established. A general conjecture on a lifting from $ GSp_{2m} \times GSp_{2m}$ to $GSp_{4m}$ (of genus $g=4m$) is formulated. Constructions of $p$-adic families of Siegel modu…
In this paper we follow the approach of Bertrand-Beukers (and of later work of Bertrand), based on differential Galois theory, to prove a very general version of Shidlovsky's lemma that applies to Pad{é} approximation problems at several points, both at functional and numerical levels (i.e., before and after evaluating at a specific point). This allows us to obtain a new proof of the Ball-Rivoal theorem on irrationality of infinitely many values of Riemann zeta function at odd integers, inspired by the proof of the Siegel-Shidlovsky theorem on values of E-functions: Shidlovsky's lemma is used …
In their celebrated paper "On Siegel's Lemma", Bombieri and Vaaler found an upper bound on the height of integer solutions of systems of linear Diophantine equations. Calculating the bound directly, however, requires exponential time. In this paper, we present the bound in a different form that can be computed in polynomial time. We also give an elementary (and arguably simpler) proof for the bound.
We prove that all mod $p^m$ singular forms of level $N$, degree $n+r$, and $p$-rank $r$ with $n\ge r$ are congruent mod $p^m$ to linear combinations of theta series of degree $r$ attached to quadratic forms of some level. Moreover, we prove that, the levels of theta series are of the form ``$p\mbox{-power}\times N$''. Additionally, in some cases of mod $p$ singular forms with smallest possible weight, we prove that the levels of theta series should be $p$.
Let $k > 3$ be an integer and $p$ a prime with $p > 2k-2$. Let $f$ be a newform of weight $2k-2$ and level 1 so that $f$ is ordinary at $p$ and $\barρ_{f}$ is irreducible. Under some additional hypotheses we prove that $ord_{p}(L_{alg}(k,f)) \leq ord_{p}(# S)$ where $S$ is the Pontryagin dual of the Selmer group associated to $ρ_{f} \otimes ε^{1-k}$ with $ε$ the $p$-adic cyclotomic character. We accomplish this by first constructing a congruence between the Saito-Kurokawa lift of $f$ and a non-CAP Siegel cusp form. Once this congruence is established, we use Galois representations to obtain th…
Let $X\cong \operatorname{SL}_2(\mathbb R)/\operatorname{SL}_2(\mathbb Z)$ be the space of unimodular lattices in $\mathbb R^2$, and for any $r\ge 0$ denote by $K_r\subset X$ the set of lattices such that all its nonzero vectors have supremum norm at least $e^{-r}$. These are compact nested subset{s} of $X$, with $K_0 = {\bigcap}_{r}K_r$ being the union of two closed horocycles. We use an explicit second moment formula for the Siegel transform of the indicator functions of squares in $\mathbb R^2$ centered at the origin to derive an asymptotic formula for the volume of sets $K_r$ as $r\to 0$. …
We consider multivariable polynomials over a fixed number field, linear in some of the variables. For a system of such polynomials satisfying certain technical conditions we prove the existence of search bounds for simultaneous zeros with respect to height. For a single such polynomial, we prove the existence of search bounds with respect to height for zeros lying outside of a prescribed algebraic set. We also obtain search bounds in the case of homogeneous multilinear polynomials, which are related to a so-called "sparse" version of Siegel's lemma. Among the tools we develop are height inequa…
We establish new measures of linear independence of logarithms on commutative algebraic groups in the so-called \emph{rational case}. More precisely, let k be a number field and v_{0} be an arbitrary place of k. Let G be a commutative algebraic group defined over k and H be a connected algebraic subgroup of G. Denote by Lie(H) its Lie algebra at the origin. Let u\in Lie(G(C_{v_{0}})) a logarithm of a point p\in G(k). Assuming (essentially) that p is not a torsion point modulo proper connected algebraic subgroups of G, we obtain lower bounds for the distance from u to Lie(H)\otimes_{k} C_{v_{0}…
Let $F$ be a non-zero polynomial with integer coefficients in $N$ variables of degree $M$. We prove the existence of an integral point of small height at which $F$ does not vanish. Our basic bound depends on $N$ and $M$ only. We separately investigate the case when $F$ is decomposable into a product of linear forms, and provide a more sophisticated bound. We also relate this problem to a certain extension of Siegel's Lemma as well as to Faltings' version of it. Finally we exhibit an application of our results to a discrete version of the Tarski plank problem.
We formulate and prove a version of the arithmetic Siegel-Weil formula for (zero dimensional) Shimura varieties attached to tori, equipped with some additional data. More precisely, we define a family of ``special" divisors in terms of Green functions at archimedean and non-archimedean places, and prove that their degrees coincide with the Fourier coefficients of the central derivative of an Eisenstein series. The proof relies on the usual Siegel-Weil formula to provide a direct link between both sides of the identity, and in some sense, offers a more conceptual point of view on prior results …
Given a $2k$-dimensional symplectic space $(Z,F)$ in $N$ variables, $1 < 2k \leq N$, over a global field $K$, we prove the existence of a symplectic basis for $(Z,F)$ of bounded height. This can be viewed as a version of Siegel's lemma for a symplectic space. As corollaries of our main result, we prove the existence of a small-height decomposition of $(Z,F)$ into hyperbolic planes, as well as the existence of two generating flags of totally isotropic subspaces. These present analogues of known results for quadratic spaces. A distinctive feature of our argument is that it works simultaneously f…
Let $K$ be a number field, and let $F$ be a symmetric bilinear form in $2N$ variables over $K$. Let $Z$ be a subspace of $K^N$. A classical theorem of Witt states that the bilinear space $(Z,F)$ can be decomposed into an orthogonal sum of hyperbolic planes, singular, and anisotropic components. We prove the existence of such a decomposition of small height, where all bounds on height are explicit in terms of heights of $F$ and $Z$. We also prove a special version of Siegel's Lemma for a bilinear space, which provides a small-height orthogonal decomposition into one-dimensional subspaces. Final…
Let $K$ be a number field, $\overline{\mathbb Q}$, or the field of rational functions on a smooth projective curve over a perfect field, and let $V$ be a subspace of $K^N$, $N \geq 2$. Let $Z_K$ be a union of varieties defined over $K$ such that $V \nsubseteq Z_K$. We prove the existence of a point of small height in $V \setminus Z_K$, providing an explicit upper bound on the height of such a point in terms of the height of $V$ and the degree of a hypersurface containing $Z_K$, where dependence on both is optimal. This generalizes and improves upon the previous results of the author. As a part…
Let $(Ω, \mathcal{A}, μ)$ be a probability space. The classical Borel-Cantelli Lemma states that for any sequence of $μ$-measurable sets $E_i$ ($i=1,2,3,\dots$), if the sum of their measures converges then the corresponding $\limsup$ set $E_\infty$ is of measure zero. In general the converse statement is false. However, it is well known that the divergence counterpart is true under various additional 'independence' hypotheses. In this paper we revisit these hypotheses and establish both sufficient and necessary conditions for $E_\infty$ to have either positive or full measure.
An important problem in analytic and geometric combinatorics is estimating the number of lattice points in a compact convex set in a Euclidean space. Such estimates have numerous applications throughout mathematics. In this note, we exhibit applications of a particular estimate of this sort to several counting problems in number theory: counting integral points and units of bounded height over number fields, counting points of bounded height over positive definite quaternion algebras, and counting points of bounded height with a fixed support over global function fields. Our arguments use a co…
In this paper, we prove a few lemmas concerning Fibonacci numbers modulo primes and provide a few statements that are equivalent to Wall-Sun-Sun Prime Conjecture. Further, we investigate the conjecture through heuristic arguments and propose a few additional conjectures for future research.
