Let $F$ be a non-zero polynomial with integer coefficients in $N$ variables of degree $M$. We prove the existence of an integral point of small height at which $F$ does not vanish. Our basic bound depends on $N$ and $M$ only. We separately investigate the case when $F$ is decomposable into a product of linear forms, and provide a more sophisticated bound. We also relate this problem to a certain extension of Siegel's Lemma as well as to Faltings' version of it. Finally we exhibit an application of our results to a discrete version of the Tarski plank problem.
We investigate in a statistical fashion the smallest height of a rational point on a Fano hypersurface defined over the field of rational numbers. Along the way, we establish an average version of Manin's conjecture about the number of rational points of bounded height on Fano varieties for the complete family of Fano hypersurfaces of fixed degree and dimension.
We establish an asymptotic formula for the number of points of bounded height on a singular hypersurface of the triprojective space. We will see that the final result is in accordance with Batyrev-Manin conjecture. The method used is a version of the circle method developped by Heath Brown and used by Robbiani for counting points of bounded height on an hypersurface of biprojective space. ----- Nous établissons ici une formule asymptotique pour le nombre de points de hauteur bornée sur une hypersurface singulière de l'espace triprojectif. An asymptotic formula is established for the number of rational points of bounded anticanonical height which lie on a certain Zariski open subset of an arbitrary smooth biquadratic hypersurface in sufficiently many variables. The proof uses the Hardy--Littlewood circle method.
We consider hypersurfaces in $(\mathbb{P}^1)^n$ that contain a generic sequence of small dynamical height with respect to a split map and project onto $n-1$ coordinates. We show that these hypersurfaces satisfy strong coincidence relations between their points with zero height coordinates. More precisely, it holds that in a Zariski-open dense subset of such a hypersurface $n-1$ coordinates have height zero if and only if all coordinates have height zero. This is a key step in the resolution of the dynamical Bogomolov conjecture for split maps.
We fix a counting function of multiplicities of algebraic points in a projective hypersurface over a number field, and take the sum over all algebraic points of bounded height and fixed degree. An upper bound for the sum with respect to this counting function will be given in terms of the degree of the hypersurface, the dimension of the singular locus, the upper bounds of height, and the degree of the field of definition.
We tackle the "relative" Lehmer problem on algebraic subvarieties of a multiplicative torus. Generalizing a theorem of F. Amoroso and U. Zannier, we give a lower bound for the normalized height of a non torsion hypersurface in terms of its obstruction index over $\Q^{ab}$, the maximal abelian extension of $\Q$. We prove up to $\eps$ the sharpest conjecture that can be formulated.
Let $F(x_1,...,x_n)$ be a form of degree $d\geq 2$, which produces a geometrically irreducible hypersurface in $\mathbb{P}^{n-1}$. This paper is concerned with the number of rational points on F=0 which have height at most $B$. Whenever $n<6$, or whenever the hypersurface is not a union of lines, we obtain estimates that are essentially best possible and that are uniform in $d$ and $n$.
For a cycle of codimension 1 in a toric variety, its degree with respect to a nef toric divisor can be understood in terms of the mixed volume of the polytopes associated to the divisor and to the cycle. We prove here that an analogous combinatorial formula holds in the arithmetic setting: the global height of a 1-codimensional cycle with respect to a toric divisor equipped with a semipositive toric metric can be expressed in terms of mixed integrals of the $v$-adic roof functions associated to the metric and the Legendre-Fenchel dual of the $v$-adic Ronkin function of the Laurent polynomial o…
Using the circle method, we count integer points on complete intersections in biprojective space in boxes of different side length, provided the number of variables is large enough depending on the degree of the defining equations and certain loci related to the singular locus. Having established these asymptotics we deduce asymptotic formulas for rational points on such varieties with respect to the anticanonical height function. In particular, we establish a conjecture of Manin for certain smooth hypersurfaces in biprojective space of sufficiently large dimension.
Let $n$ be a positive multiple of $4$. We establish an asymptotic formula for the number of rational points of bounded height on singular cubic hypersurfaces $S_n$ defined by $$ x^3=(y_1^2 + \cdots + y_n^2)z . $$ This result is new in two aspects: first, it can be viewed as a modest start on the study of density of rational points on those singular cubic hypersurfaces which are not covered by the classical theorems of Davenport or Heath-Brown; second, it proves Manin's conjecture for singular cubic hypersurfaces $S_n$ defined above.
Let $F$ be a quadratic form in $N \geq 2$ variables defined on a vector space $V \subseteq K^N$ over a global field $K$, and $\Z \subseteq K^N$ be a finite union of varieties defined by families of homogeneous polynomials over $K$. We show that if $V \setminus \Z$ contains a nontrivial zero of $F$, then there exists a linearly independent collection of small-height zeros of $F$ in $V\setminus \Z$, where the height bound does not depend on the height of $\Z$, only on the degrees of its defining polynomials. As a corollary of this result, we show that there exists a small-height maximal totally …
Motivated by a recent question of Peyre, we apply the Hardy-Littlewood circle method to count "sufficiently free" rational points of bounded height on arbitrary smooth projective hypersurfaces of low degree that are defined over the rational numbers.
We demonstrate the Batyrev-Manin Conjecture for the number of points of bounded height on hypersurfaces of some toric varieties.. The method used is inspired by the one developed by Schindler for the study the case of hypersurfaces of biprojective spaces. This method is based on the Hardy-Littlewood circle method. In this paper, we will give an upper bound and a lower bound of the arithmetic Hilbert-Samuel function of projective hypersurfaces, which are uniform and explicit. These two bounds have the optimal dominant terms. As an application, we use the lower bound to get an estimate of the density of rational points with small heights in a hypersurface.
We demonstrate the Batyrev-Manin Conjecture for the number of points of bounded height on hypersurfaces of some toric varieties whose rank of the Picard group is 2. This paper establishes the conjecture that a non-singular projective hypersurface of dimension $r$, which is not equal to a linear space, contains $O(B^{r+ε})$ rational points of height at most $B$, for any choice of $ε>0$. The implied constant in this estimate depends at most upon $ε, r$ and the degree of the hypersurface.
Let X be a geometrically integral projective cubic hypersurface defined over the rationals, with dimension D and singular locus of dimension at most D-4. For any ε>0, we show that X contains O(B^{D+ε}) rational points of height at most B. The implied constant in this estimate depends upon the choice of εand the coefficients of the cubic form defining X.
It is fundamental in number theory to calculate lower bounds for height functions. Grizzard studied lower bounds for the Weil height in a relative setting. Vidaux and Videla introduced the Northcott number for a set $A\subset\bar{\mathbb{Q}}$. It bounds the Weil height on $A$ from below, outside the zero-height points and the finitely many small-height points. Pazuki, Technau, and Widmer introduced the weighted Weil heights. These heights generalize both the absolute and relative Weil heights. In this paper, we introduce a relative version of the Northcott number related to the weighted Weil h…
We study the number of representations of an integer n=F(x_1,...,x_s) by a homogeneous form in sufficiently many variables. This is a classical problem in number theory to which the circle method has been succesfully applied to give an asymptotic for the number of such representations where the integer vector (x_1,...,x_s) is restricted to a box of side length P for P sufficiently large. In the special case of Waring's problem, Vaughan and Wooley have recently established for the first time a higher order expansion for the corresponding asymptotic formula. Via a different and much more general…
Let $X \subset \mathbb{P}^n$ be a non-singular hypersurface of degree $d>1$, and let $ε>0$. This paper is concerned with the conjecture that there are $O(B^{n-1+ε})$ rational points on $X$ that have height at most $B$, in which the implied constant is allowed to depend only upon $d, ε$ and $n$. In particular this conjecture is shown to hold as soon as $d>4$. Furthermore, the main ideas in the proof are used to obtain new paucity estimates for certain diophantine equations.
We count rational points of bounded height on the non-normal senary quartic hypersurface x 4 = (y 2 1 + $\times$ $\times$ $\times$ + y 2 4)z 2 in the spirit of Manin's conjecture.

We establish a sharp asymptotic formula for the number of rational points up to a given height and within a given distance from a hypersurface. Our main innovation is a bootstrap method that relies on the synthesis of Poisson summation, projective duality and the method of stationary phase. This has surprising applications to counting rational points lying on the manifold; indeed, we are able to prove an analogue of Serre's Dimension Growth Conjecture (originally stated for projective varieties) in this general setup. As another consequence of our main counting result, we obtain an optimal Jar…
Given an isotropic quadratic form over a number field which assumes a value $t$, we investigate the distribution of points at which this value is assumed. Building on the previous work about the distribution of small-height zeros of quadratic forms, we produce bounds on height of points outside of some algebraic sets in a quadratic space at which the form assumes the value $t$. Our bounds on height are explicit in terms of the heights of the form, the space, the algebraic set and the value $t$.
The Equidistribution Conjecture is proved for general semiabelian varieties over number fields. Previously, this conjecture was only known in the special case of almost split semiabelian varieties through work of Chambert-Loir. The general case has remained intractable so far because the height of a semiabelian variety is negative unless it is almost split. In fact, this places the conjecture outside the scope of Yuan's equidistribution theorem on algebraic dynamical systems. To overcome this, an asymptotic adaption of the equidistribution technique invented by Szpiro, Ullmo, and Zhang is used…
Let $K$ be a number field, $\overline{\mathbb Q}$, or the field of rational functions on a smooth projective curve over a perfect field, and let $V$ be a subspace of $K^N$, $N \geq 2$. Let $Z_K$ be a union of varieties defined over $K$ such that $V \nsubseteq Z_K$. We prove the existence of a point of small height in $V \setminus Z_K$, providing an explicit upper bound on the height of such a point in terms of the height of $V$ and the degree of a hypersurface containing $Z_K$, where dependence on both is optimal. This generalizes and improves upon the previous results of the author. As a part…
We obtain a lower bound for the normalised height of a non-torsion hypersurface $V$ of a C.M. abelian variety $A$ which is a refinement of a precedent result. This lower bound is optimal in terms of the geometric degree of $V$, up to an absolute power of a ``log'' (independant of the dimension of $A$). We thus extend the results of F. Amoroso and S. David on the same problem on a multiplicative group $\mathbb{G}_m^n$. When $A$ is an elliptic curve and $V=\bar{P}$ is the set of conjugates of a non torsion $\bar{k}$-point, we reobtain the result of M. Laurent on the elliptic Lehmer's problem.
Let $Γ$ be a finitely generated subgroup of the multiplicative group $\G_m^2(\bar{Q})$. Let $p(X,Y),q(X,Y)\in\bat{Q}$ be two coprime polynomials not both vanishing at $(0,0)$; let $ε>0$. We prove that, for all $(u,v)\inΓ$ outside a proper Zariski closed subset of $G_m^2$, the height of $p(u,v)/q(u,v)$ verifies $h(p(u,v)/q(u,v))>h(1:p(u,v):q(u,v))-ε\max(h(uu),h(v))$. As a consequence, we deduce upper bounds for (a generalized notion of) the g.c.d. of $u-1,v-1$ for $u,v$ running over $Γ$.
In this paper we establish three results on small-height zeros of quadratic polynomials over $\overline{\mathbb Q}$. For a single quadratic form in $N \geq 2$ variables on a subspace of $\overline{\mathbb Q}^N$, we prove an upper bound on the height of a smallest nontrivial zero outside of an algebraic set under the assumption that such a zero exists. For a system of $k$ quadratic forms on an $L$-dimensional subspace of $\overline{\mathbb Q}^N$, $N \geq L \geq \frac{k(k+1)}{2}+1$, we prove existence of a nontrivial simultaneous small-height zero. For a system of one or two inhomogeneous quadra…
Let $n\geq 2$, and let $f$ be a polynomial of degree at least 2 with coefficients in a number field or a characteristic 0 function field $K$. We present two arithmetic applications of a recent theorem of Medvedev-Scanlon to the dynamics of the map $(f,...,f):\ (\bP^1_{K})^n\longrightarrow (\bP^1_K)^n$, namely the dynamical analogues of the Hasse principle and the Bombieri-Masser-Zannier height bound theorem. In particular, we prove that the Hasse principle holds when we intersect an orbit and a preperiodic subvariety, and that points in the intersection of a curve with the union of all periodi…
We consider multivariable polynomials over a fixed number field, linear in some of the variables. For a system of such polynomials satisfying certain technical conditions we prove the existence of search bounds for simultaneous zeros with respect to height. For a single such polynomial, we prove the existence of search bounds with respect to height for zeros lying outside of a prescribed algebraic set. We also obtain search bounds in the case of homogeneous multilinear polynomials, which are related to a so-called "sparse" version of Siegel's lemma. Among the tools we develop are height inequa…
In this article we prove several new uniform upper bounds on the number of points of bounded height on varieties over $\mathbb{F}_q[t]$. For projective curves, we prove the analogue of Walsh' result with polynomial dependence on $q$ and the degree $d$ of the curve. For affine curves, this yields an improvement to bounds by Sedunova, and Cluckers, Forey and Loeser. In higher dimensions, we prove a version of dimension growth for hypersurfaces of degree $d\geq 64$, building on work by Castryck, Cluckers, Dittmann and Nguyen in characteristic zero. These bounds depend polynomially on $q$ and $d$,…
We discuss existence of explicit search bounds for zeros of polynomials with coefficients in a number field. Our main result is a theorem about the existence of polynomial zeros of small height over the field of algebraic numbers outside of unions of subspaces. All bounds on the height are explicit.
For a reduced projective scheme over the ring of integers of a number field, the set of places over which the fibres of the scheme are not reduced is a finite set. We give an explicit upper bound for the product of the norms of places in this set. For this purpose, we introduce a generalization of the notion of height over the adelic ring. We reduce the general case of a scheme of pure dimension to the case of a hypersurface by using the theory of Chow varieties. The case of a hypersurface is then treated with the help of the resultant of the equation of the hypersurface with some partial deri…
We establish the sharp estimate <<_d N^{2/d} for the number of rational points of height at most N on an irreducible projective curve of degree d. We deduce this from a result for general hypersurfaces that is sensitive to the coefficients of the corresponding form.
We prove finiteness results for sets of varieties over number fields with good reduction outside a given finite set of places using cyclic covers. We obtain a version of the Shafarevich conjecture for weighted projective surfaces, double covers of abelian varieties, and reduce the Shafarevich conjecture for hypersurfaces to the case of hypersurfaces of high dimension. These are special cases of a general set-up for integral points on moduli stacks of cyclic covers, and our arithmetic results are achieved via a version of the Chevalley-Weil theorem for stacks.
Lower Bound for the Canonical Height for Drinfeld Modules with Complex Multiplication. Let K be a fi nite extension of Fq(T), let L=K be a Galois extension with Galois group G and let E be the sub eld of L fixed by the center of G. Assume that there exists a finite place v of K such that the local degrees of E=K above v are bounded. Let $ϕ$ be a Drinfeld module with complex multiplication. We give an e fective lower bound for the canonical height of $ϕ$ on L outside the torsion points of $ϕ$ . In the number field case, this problem was solved by F. Amoroso, S. David and U. Zannier.
The holomorphic endomorphism f of projective space is called post-critically finite (PCF) if the forward image of the critical locus, under iteration of f, has algebraic support (i.e., is a finite union of hypersurfaces). In the case of dimension 1, a deep result of Thurston implies that there are no algebraic families of PCF morphisms, other than a well-understood exceptional class known as the flexible Lattes maps. This note proves a corresponding result in arbitrary dimension, for a certain subclass of morphism. Specifically, we restrict attention to morphisms f of degree at least two, with…
In this paper, an upper bound for the number of integral points of bounded height on an affine complete intersection defined over $\mathbb{Z}$ is proven. The proof uses an extension to complete intersections of the method used for hypersurfaces by Heath-Brown, the so called q-analogue of van der Corput's AB process.
Let $f: \mathbb{P}^1\to \mathbb{P}^1$ be a map of degree $>1$ defined over a function field $k = K(X)$, where $K$ is a number field and $X$ is a projective curve over $K$. For each point $a \in \mathbb{P}^1(k)$ satisfying a dynamical stability condition, we prove that the Call-Silverman canonical height for specialization $f_t$ at point $a_t$, for $t \in X(\bar{\mathbb{Q}})$ outside a finite set, induces a Weil height on the curve $X$; i.e., we prove the existence of a $\mathbb{Q}$-divisor $D = D_{f,a}$ on $X$ so that the function $t\mapsto \hat{h}_{f_t}(a_t) - h_D(t)$ is bounded on $X(\bar{\m…
