In this article we prove several new uniform upper bounds on the number of points of bounded height on varieties over $\mathbb{F}_q[t]$. For projective curves, we prove the analogue of Walsh' result with polynomial dependence on $q$ and the degree $d$ of the curve. For affine curves, this yields an improvement to bounds by Sedunova, and Cluckers, Forey and Loeser. In higher dimensions, we prove a version of dimension growth for hypersurfaces of degree $d\geq 64$, building on work by Castryck, Cluckers, Dittmann and Nguyen in characteristic zero. These bounds depend polynomially on $q$ and $d$, and it is this dependence which simplifies the treatment of the dimension growth conjecture.
It is known that Szpiro's conjecture, or equivalently the ABC-conjecture, implies Lang's conjecture giving a uniform lower bound for the canonical height of nontorsion points on elliptic curves. In this note we show that a significantly weaker version of Szpiro's conjecture, which we call "prime-depleted," suffices to prove Lang's conjecture.
In this paper I verify Manin's conjecture for a class of rational projective toric varieties with a large class of heights other than the usual one that comes from the standard metric on projective space.
In this note, we show how the classical Hodge index theorem implies the Hodge index conjecture of Beilinson for height pairing of homologically trivial codimension two cycles over function field of characteristic 0. Such an index conjecture has been used in our paper on Gross-Schoen cycles to deduce the Bogomolov conjecture and a lower bound for Hodge class (or Faltings height) from some conjectures about metrized graphs which have just been recently proved by Zubeyir Cinkir.
We define a notion of height for rational points with respect to a vector bundle on a proper algebraic stack with finite diagonal over a global field, which generalizes the usual notion for rational points on projective varieties. We explain how to compute this height for various stacks of interest (for instance: classifying stacks of finite groups, symmetric products of varieties, moduli stacks of abelian varieties, weighted projective spaces). In many cases our uniform definition reproduces ways already in use for measuring the complexity of rational points, while in others it is something n…
A conjecture of Batyrev and Manin predicts the asymptotic behaviour of rational points of bounded height on smooth projective varieties over number fields. We prove some new cases of this conjecture for conic bundle surfaces equipped with some non-anticanonical height functions. As a special case, we verify these conjectures for the first time for some smooth cubic surfaces for height functions associated to certain ample line bundles.
In 1983 Silverman and Tate showed that the set of points in a 1-dimensional family of abelian varieties where a section of infinite order has `small height' is finite. We conjecture a generalisation to higher-dimensional families, where we replace `finite' by `not Zariski dense'. We show that this conjecture would imply the Uniform Boundedness Conjecture for torsion points on abelian varieties. We then prove a few special cases of this new conjecture.
A condition is given, under which a general lattice point counting function is asymptotic to the corresponding ball volume growth function. This is then used to give height asymptotics in the style of the Batyrev-Manin Conjecture for certain intrinsically defined heights on semisimple groups.
A conjecture of Manin predicts the asymptotic distribution of rational points of bounded height on Fano varieties. In this paper we use conic bundles to obtain correct lower bounds or a wide class of surfaces over number fields for which the conjecture is still far from being proved. For example, we obtain the conjectured lower bound of Manin's conjecture for any del Pezzo surface whose Picard rank is sufficiently large, or for arbitrary del Pezzo surfaces after possibly an extension of the ground field of small degree.
In this paper, we propose a new height function for a variety defined over a finitely generated field over Q. For this height function, we will prove Northcott's theorem and Bogomolov's conjecture, so that we can recover the original Raynaud's theorem (Manin-Mumford's conjecture).
We provide an explicit formula on the growth rate of ample heights of rational points under iteration of endomorphisms on smooth projective varieties over number fields. As an application, we give a positive answer to a problem of Dynamical Mordell-Lang type for pairs of étale endomorphisms, which is a variant of the original one stated by Bell, Ghioca, and Tucker in their monograph.
We show that the Boundedness Height Conjecture is optimal; all varieties in a power of an elliptic curve which do not satisfy the hypothesis neither satisfy the thesis. The Bounded Height Conjecture is known to hold for varieties in a power of an elliptic curve. We also present some examples and remarks.
This is a report of the author's talk at RIMS workshop 2020 Problems and Prospects in Analytic Number Theory held online on Zoom. We discuss a recent formulation of log Manin's conjecture for klt Campana points and an approach to this conjecture using the height zeta function method.
We give an overview of some landmark theorems and recent conjectures in Diophantine Geometry. In the elliptic case, we prove some new bounds for torsion anomalous points and we clarify the implications of several height bounds on the effective Mordell-Lang Conjecture. We also explicitly bound the Neron-Tate height of the rational points of a family of curves of increasing genus.
In 2006, Kawaguchi proved a lower bound for height of h(f(P)) when f is a regular affine automorphism of A^2, and he conjectured that a similar estimate is also true for regular affine automorphisms of A^n for n>2. In this paper we prove Kawaguchi's conjecture. This implies that Kawaguchi's theory of canonical heights for regular affine automorphisms of projective space is true in all dimensions.
In this work we prove a new Northcott property for the Faltings height. Namely we show, assuming the Colmez Conjecture and the Artin Conjecture, that there are finitely many CM abelian varieties over the complex numbers of a fixed dimension which have bounded Faltings height. The technique developed uses new tools from integral p-adic Hodge theory to study the variation of Faltings height within an isogeny class of CM abelian varieties. In special cases, we are moreover able to use the technique to develop new Colmez-type formulas for the Faltings height.
Assuming Vojta's conjecture, we give a sufficient condition for the limit \[ \lim_{n \to \infty} \frac{h_{Y}(f^{n}(x))}{h_{H}(f^{n}(x))} \] is equal to zero, where $f \colon X \longrightarrow X$ is a surjective self-morphism on a smooth projective variety $X$, $h_{H}$ is an ample height function on $X$, and $h_{Y}$ is a global height function associated with a closed subscheme $Y \subset X$ of codimension at least two. Based on this, we propose a conjecture on a sufficient condition for the limit to be zero. We point out that our conjecture implies Dynamical Mordell-Lang conjecture for endomor…
We study the Faltings height pairing of arithmetic Heegner divisors and CM cycles on Shimura varieties associated to orthogonal groups. We compute the Archimedian contribution to the height pairing and derive a conjecture relating the total pairing to the central derivative of a Rankin L-function. We prove the conjecture in certain cases where the Shimura variety has dimension 0, 1, or 2. In particular, we obtain a new proof of the Gross-Zagier formula.
We show that, assuming Vojta's height conjecture, the height of a rational point on an algebraically hyperbolic variety can be bounded "uniformly" in families. This generalizes a result of Su-Ion Ih for curves of genus at least two to higher-dimensional varieties. As an application, we show that, assuming Vojta's height conjecture, the height of a rational point on a curve of general type is uniformly bounded. Finally, we prove a similar result for smooth hyperbolic surfaces with $c_1^2 > c_2$.
This is an informal paper presenting historical results around the recent paper of the author about Lang's Conjecture and torsion of elliptic curves. This paper also discusses a few aspects of the proof.
For $E_{b}: y^{2}=x^{3}+b$, we establish Lang's conjecture on a lower bound for the canonical height of non-torsion points along with upper and lower bounds for the difference between the canonical and logarithmic height. In many cases, our results are actually best-possible.
Define B(n) to be the largest height of a polynomial in $\mathbb{Z}[x]$ dividing $x^n-1$. We formulate a number of conjectures related to the value of B(n) when $n$ is of a prescribed form. Additionally, we prove a lower bound for $B(p^aq^b)$ where $p,q$ are distinct primes.
We adopt a statistical point of view on the conjecture of Lang which predicts a lower bound for the canonical height of non-torsion rational points on elliptic curves defined over $\mathbb{Q}$. More specifically, we prove that among the family of all elliptic curves defined over $\mathbb{Q}$ and having positive rank, there is a density one subfamily of curves which satisfy a strong form of Lang's conjecture.
The Kawaguchi--Silverman conjecture predicts that if $f\colon X \dashrightarrow X$ is a dominant rational-self map of a projective variety over $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}$, and $P$ is a $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}$-point of $X$ with Zariski-dense orbit, then the dynamical and arithmetic degrees of $f$ coincide: $λ_1(f) = α_f(P)$. We prove this conjecture in several higher-dimensional settings, including all endomorphisms of non-uniruled smooth projective threefolds with degree larger than $1$, and all endomorphisms of hyper-Kähler varieties in any dimension. In the latter case, we construct a canonical…
We prove that the number of rational points of bounded height on certain del Pezzo surfaces of degree 1 defined over Q grows linearly, as predicted by Manin's conjecture. Along the way, we investigate the average number of integral points of small naive height on quadratic twists of a fixed elliptic curve with full rational 2-torsion.
For elliptic curves given by the equation $E_{a}: y^{2}=x^{3}+ax$, we establish the best-possible version of Lang's conjecture on the lower bound of the canonical height of non-torsion points along with best-possible upper and lower bounds for the difference between the canonical and logarithmic height.
In this paper the height zeta function associated to a certain singular del Pezzo surface of degree four is studied. If $U$ denotes the open subset formed by deleting the unique line from this surface, then an asymptotic formula for the number of rational points of bounded height on $U$ is established which verifies the Manin conjecture.
We state and prove an equivariant version of Lehmer's conjecture on heights, generalizing papers by Zagier (1993) and Dresden (1998) which are special cases of this theorem. We also extend their three cases to a full classification of all groups satisfying the condition that the set of all orbits for which every non-zero element lies on the unit circle is finite and non-empty.
This paper focuses on the proof of Serge Lang's Heights Conjecture in a form that is completely effective. As a complementary result the author provides a new proof of Mazur-Merel theorem about a bound for the torsion of elliptic curves in terms of the degree of the ground field and improves the known result by providing a small polynomial bound in terms of this degree. On an abelian scheme over a smooth curve over $\overline{\mathbb Q}$ a symmetric relatively ample line bundle defines a fiberwise Néon-Tate height. If the base curve is inside a projective space, we also have a height on its $\overline{\mathbb Q}$-points that serves as a measure of each fiber, an abelian variety. Silverman proved an asymptotic equality between these two heights on a curve in the abelian scheme. In this paper we prove an inequality between these heights on a subvariety of any dimension of the abelian scheme. As an application we prove the Geometric Bogomolov Conjecture for the …
In this short note we show that the uniform abc-conjecture over number fields puts strong restrictions on the coordinates of rational points on elliptic curves. For the proof we use a variant of the uniform abc-conjecture over number fields formulated by Mochizuki. As an application, we generalize a result of Silverman on elliptic non-Wieferich primes.
The Bounded Height Conjecture of Bombieri, Masser, and Zannier states that for any sufficiently generic algebraic subvariety of a semiabelian $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}$-variety $G$ there is an upper bound on the Weil height of the points contained in its intersection with the union of all algebraic subgroups having (at most) complementary dimension in $G$. This conjecture has been shown by Habegger in the case where $G$ is either a multiplicative torus or an abelian variety. However, there are new obstructions to his approach if $G$ is a general semiabelian variety. In particular, the lack of Poi…
In this article, we extend Grothendieck's standard conjectures to cycles on degenerated fibers and use them to define some decompositions for the arithmetic Chow group of Gillet--Soulé. In the local setting, our decompositions provide non-archimedean analogues of "harmonic forms" on Kähler manifolds. In the global setting, our decompositions provide canonical arithmetic liftings called "L- liftings" of algebraic cycles on varieties over number fields, and thus provide a new height pairing called the L-height pairing as one extension of Beilinson--Bloch's pairing of homologically trivial cycles…
This is an introduction to the topics of the title, from the 2017 Grenoble Summer school on Arakelov geometry and arithmetic applications. We review Arithmetic intersection numbers, explain the definition of the height of a variety and its properties, both in the framework of classical Arakelov geometry and of Zhang's adelic formalism. We then discuss arithmetic ampleness and its application to the equidistribution theorem of Szpiro-Ullmo-Zhang-Yuan, both at complex and nonarchimedean places. We conclude with Ullmo-Zhang's proof of the Bogomolov conjecture over number fields.
Let $S$ be a set of dominant rational self-maps on $\mathbb{P}^N$. We study the arithmetic and dynamical degrees of infinite sequences of $S$ obtained by sequentially composing elements of $S$ on the right and left. We then apply this insight to dynamical Galois theory.
We conjecture a lower bound for the minimal canonical height of non-torsion rational points on a natural density 1 subset of the sextic twist family of Mordell curves. We then establish a lower bound that yields a partial result towards this conjecture.
In this paper, we consider the limit $ \lim_{n \to \infty} \sum_{v\in S} λ_{Y,v}(f^{n}(x))/h_{H}(f^{n}(x)) $ where $f \colon X \longrightarrow X$ is a surjective self-morphism on a smooth projective variety $X$ over a number field, $S$ is a finite set of places, $ λ_{Y,v}$ is a local height function associated with a proper closed subscheme $Y \subset X$, and $h_{H}$ is an ample height function on $X$. We give a geometric condition which ensures that the limit is zero, unconditionally when $\dim Y=0$ and assuming Vojta's conjecture when $\dim Y\geq1$. In particular, we prove (one is unconditio…
The Equidistribution Conjecture is proved for general semiabelian varieties over number fields. Previously, this conjecture was only known in the special case of almost split semiabelian varieties through work of Chambert-Loir. The general case has remained intractable so far because the height of a semiabelian variety is negative unless it is almost split. In fact, this places the conjecture outside the scope of Yuan's equidistribution theorem on algebraic dynamical systems. To overcome this, an asymptotic adaption of the equidistribution technique invented by Szpiro, Ullmo, and Zhang is used…
In previous work, the first author, Ghioca, and the third author introduced a broad dynamical framework giving rise to many classical sequences from number theory and algebraic combinatorics. Specifically, these are sequences of the form $f(Φ^n(x))$, where $Φ\colon X\to X$ and $f\colon X\to\mathbb{P}^1$ are rational maps defined over $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}$ and $x\in X(\overline{\mathbb{Q}})$ is a point whose forward orbit avoids the indeterminacy loci of $Φ$ and $f$. They conjectured that if the sequence is infinite, then $\limsup \frac{h(f(Φ^n(x)))}{\log n} > 0$. They also made a correspondi…
We prove that assuming the Colmez conjecture and the ``no Siegel zeros" conjecture, the stable Faltings height of a CM abelian variety over a number field is less than or equal to the logarithm of the root discriminant of the field of definition of the abelian variety times an effective constant depending only on the dimension of the abelian variety. In view of the fact that the Colmez conjecture for abelian CM fields, the averaged Colmez conjecture, and the ``no Siegel zeros" conjecture for CM fields with no complex quadratic subfields are already proved, we prove unconditional analogues of t…
The height $H(n)$ of $n$, introduced by Pillai in 1929, is the smallest positive integer $i$ such that the $i$th iterate of Euler's totient function at $n$ is $1$. H. N. Shapiro (1943) studied the structure of the set of all numbers at a height. We state a formula for the height function due to Shapiro and use it to list steps to generate numbers at any height. This turns out to be a useful way to think of this construct. In particular, we extend some results of Shapiro regarding the largest odd numbers at a height. We present some theoretical and computational evidence to show that $H$ and it…
Let $E/\mathbb{Q}$ be an elliptic curve which has split multiplicative reduction at a prime $p$ and whose analytic rank $r_{an}(E)$ equals one. The main goal of this article is to relate the second order derivative of the Mazur-Tate-Teitelbaum $p$-adic $L$-function $L_p(E,s)$ of $E$ to Nekovář's height pairing evaluated on natural elements arising from the Beilinson-Kato elements. Along the way, we extend a Rubin-style formula of Nekovář (or in an alternative wording, correct another Rubin-style formula of his) to apply in the presence of exceptional zeros. Our height formula allows us, among …
Let $S$ be a Shimura variety and let $h$ be a Weil height function on $S$. We conjecture that the heights of special points in $S$ are discriminant negligible. Assuming this conjecture to be true, we prove that the sizes of the Galois orbits of special points grow as a fixed power of their discriminant (an invariant we will define in the text). In the case of Shimura varieties of abelian type, the height bound holds by the recently proved averaged Colmez formula, and our theorem gives a new proof of Tsimerman's Galois lower bound in this case. The main novelty is that our approach avoids the u…
Let $G$ be a finite directed graph, $β(G)$ the minimum size of a subset $X$ of edges such that the graph $G' = (V,E \smallsetminus X)$ is directed acyclic and $γ(G)$ the number of pairs of nonadjacent vertices in the undirected graph obtained from $G$ by replacing each directed edge with an undirected edge. Chudnovsky, Seymour and Sullivan \cite{CSS07} proved that if $G$ is triangle-free, then $β(G) \leq γ(G)$. They conjectured a sharper bound (so called the "CSS conjecture") that $β(G) \leq \dfrac{γ(G)}{2}$. Nathanson and Sullivan verified this conjecture for the directed Cayley graph $\Cay(\…
Consider the discrete equation $$ y_{n+1}+y_{n-1}=\frac{a_n+b_ny_n+c_ny_n^2}{1-y_n^2}, $$ where the right side is of degree two in $y_n$ and where the coefficients $a_n$, $b_n$ and $c_n$ are rational functions of $n$ with rational coefficients. Suppose that there is a solution such that for all sufficiently large $n$, $y_n\in\mathbb{Q}$ and the height of $y_n$ dominates the height of the coefficient functions $a_n$, $b_n$ and $c_n$. We show that if the logarithmic height of $y_n$ grows no faster than a power of $n$ then either the equation is a well known discrete Painlevé equation ${\rm dP}_{…
