We discuss existence of explicit search bounds for zeros of polynomials with coefficients in a number field. Our main result is a theorem about the existence of polynomial zeros of small height over the field of algebraic numbers outside of unions of subspaces. All bounds on the height are explicit.
Let S be a sphere in R^n such that S\capQ^n\neq\emptyset and let Cl denote the closure operator in the Euclidean topology of R^n. If the center of S is in Q^n, then Cl(S\capQ^n) is S, as is easily proved. If the center of S is not in Q^n, then what is Cl(S\capQ^n)? This question, which was answered partially in the author's paper [Proc. Japan Acad. Ser. A Math. Sci. 80 (2004), no. 7, 146--149], is answered completely in this paper by representing Cl(S\capQ^n) in terms of the group of Q-automorphisms of the algebraic closure of Q(γ_1,...,γ_n) in C, where γ_1,...,γ_n denote the coordinates of th…
Let D be a Krull domain and Int(D) the ring of integer-valued polynomials on D. For any f in Int(D), we explicitly construct a divisor homomorphism from [f], the divisor-closed submonoid of Int(D) generated by f, to a finite sum of copies of (N_0,+). This implies that [f] is a Krull monoid. For V a discrete valuation domain, we give explicit divisor theories of various submonoids of Int(V). In the process, we modify the concept of polynomial closure in such a way that every subset of D has a finite polynomially dense subset. The results generalize to Int(S,V), the ring of integer-valued polyno…
Let G be a commutative algebraic group over Q. Let Gamma be a subgroup of G(Q) contained in the union of the compact subgroups of G(Q_p). We formulate a guess for the dimension of the closure of Gamma in G(Q_p), and show that its correctness for certain tori is equivalent to Leopoldt's conjecture.
We prove that the existential theory of any function field $K$ of characteristic $p> 0$ is undecidable in the language of rings provided that the constant field does not contain the algebraic closure of a finite field. We also extend the undecidability proof for function fields of higher transcendence degree to characteristic 2 and show that the first-order theory of {\bf any} function field of positive characteristic is undecidable in the language of rings without parameters.
Let k be a an algebraically closed field of arbitrary characteristic, and we let h be the usual Weil height for the n-dimensional affine space corresponding to the function field k(t) (extended to its algebraic closure). We prove that for any affine variety V defined over the algebraic closure of k(t), there exists a positive real number c such that if P is an algebraic point of V and h(P)< c, then P has its coordinates in k.
Let $N \geq 2$ be an integer, $F$ a quadratic form in $N$ variables over $\bar{\mathbb Q}$, and $Z \subseteq \bar{\mathbb Q}^N$ an $L$-dimensional subspace, $1 \leq L \leq N$. We prove the existence of a small-height maximal totally isotropic subspace of the bilinear space $(Z,F)$. This provides an analogue over $\bar{\mathbb Q}$ of a well-known theorem of Vaaler proved over number fields. We use our result to prove an effective version of Witt decomposition for a bilinear space over $\bar{\mathbb Q}$. We also include some related effective results on orthogonal decomposition and structure of …
Geyer and Jarden proved several results for torsion points of elliptic curves defined over the fixed field by finitely many elements in the absolute Galois group of a finitely generated field over the prime field in its algebraic closure. As an analogue of these results, this paper studies torsion points of Drinfeld modules defined over the fixed field by finitely many elements in the absolute Galois group of a finitely generated function field in its algebraic closure. We prove some results which are similar to those of Geyer and Jarden.
The cyclotomic trace provides a comparison of the algebraic K-theory spectrum and a pro-spectrum TR that is built from the cyclic fixed points of topological Hochschild homology. In a previous paper with Ib Madsen, we used this comparison and an approximate evaluation of the structure of the pro-spectrum TR to evaluate the p-adic K-groups of a local field K of mixed characteristic (0,p) with perfect residue field. In this paper we completly determine the structure of the pro-spectrum TR for an algebrac closure of the local field K. This leads us to formulate a conjecture for the structure of t…
We consider semigroup dynamical systems defined by several polynomials over a number field $\mathbb{K}$, and the orbit (tree) they generate at a given point. We obtain finiteness results for the set of preperiodic points of such systems that fall in the cyclotomic closure of $\mathbb{K}$. More generally, we consider the finiteness of initial points in the cyclotomic closure for which the orbit contains an algebraic integer of bounded house. This work extends previous results for classical obits generated by one polynomial over $\mathbb{K}$ obtained initially by Dvornicich and Zannier (for prep…
Let K be an algebraically closed field of characteristic p. We exhibit a counterexample against a theorem asserted in one of our earlier papers, which claims to characterize the integral closure of K((t)) within the field of Hahn-Mal'cev-Neumann generalized power series. We then give a corrected characterization, generalizing our earlier description in terms of finite automata in the case where K is the algebraic closure of a finite field. We also characterize the integral closure of K(t), thus generalizing a well-known theorem of Christol and suggesting a possible framework for computing in t…
We give an effective algorithm to determine the endomorphism ring of a Drinfeld module, both over its field of definition and over a separable or algebraic closure thereof. Using previous results we deduce an effective description of the image of the adelic Galois representation associated to the Drinfeld module, up to commensurability. We also give an effective algorithm to decide whether two Drinfeld modules are isogenous, again both over their field of definition and over a separable or algebraic closure thereof.
Let $k$ be a field of positive characteristic and $K = k(V)$ a function field of a variety $V$ over $k$ and let ${\mathbf A}_K$ be a ring of adéles of $K$ with respect to a cofinite set of the places on $K$ corresponding to the divisors on $V$. Given a Drinfeld module $Φ:{\mathbb F}[t] \to \operatorname{End}_K({\mathbb G}_a)$ over $K$ and a positive integer $g$ we regard both $K^g$ and ${\mathbf A}_K^g$ as $Φ({\mathbb F}_p[t])$-modules under the diagonal action induced by $Φ$. For $Γ\subseteq K^g$ a finitely generated $Φ(\F_p[t])$-submodule and an affine subvariety $X \subseteq \bG_a^g$ define…
Pseudoexponential fields are exponential fields similar to complex exponentiation satisfying the Schanuel Property, which is the abstract statement of Schanuel's Conjecture, and an adapted form of existential closure. Here we show that if we remove the Schanuel Property and just care about existential closure, it is possible to create several existentially closed exponential functions on the algebraic numbers that still have similarities with complex exponentiation. The main difficulties are related to the arithmetic of algebraic numbers, and they can be overcome with known results about speci…
We give an automata-theoretic description of the algebraic closure of the rational function field F_q(t) over a finite field, generalizing a result of Christol. The description takes place within the Hahn-Mal'cev-Neumann field of "generalized power series" over F_q. Our approach includes a characterization of well-ordered sets of rational numbers whose base p expansions are generated by a finite automaton, as well as some techniques for computing in the algebraic closure; these include an adaptation to positive characteristic of Newton's algorithm for finding local expansions of plane curves. …
We consider function fields of transcendence degree at least 2 over algebraic closures of finite fields, and describe a functorial way to recover such function fields form their pro-l Galois theory.
Let V be a nonsingular projective algebraic variety of dimension n. Suppose there exists a very ample divisor D such that D^n=6 and dim H^0(V, O(D))=n+3. Then, (V, D) defines a D_6-Galois embedding if and only if it is a Galois closure variety of a smooth cubic in P^{n+1} with respect to a suitable projection center such that the pull back of hyperplane of P^n is linearly equivalent to D.
For each prime p and each embedding of the multiplicative group of an algebraic closure of F_p as complex roots of unity, we construct a p-adic indecomposable representation of the integral BC-system as additive endomorphisms of the big Witt ring of an algebraic closure of F_p. The obtained representations are the p-adic analogues of the complex, extremal KMS states at zero temperature of the BC-system. The role of the Riemann zeta function, as partition function of the BC-system over complex numbers is replaced, in the p-adic case, by the p-adic L-functions and the polylogarithms whose values…
We prove the existence of a Galois closure for towers of torsors under finite group schemes over a proper, geometrically connected and geometrically reduced algebraic stack $X$ over a field $k$. This is done by describing the Nori fundamental gerbe of an essentially finite cover of $X$. A similar result is also obtained for the $S$-fundamental gerbe.
