We consider the class F of 2-connected non-planar K_{3,3}-subdivision-free graphs that are embeddable in the projective plane. We show that these graphs admit a unique decomposition as a graph K_5 (the core) where the edges are replaced by two-pole networks constructed from 2-connected planar graphs. A method to enumerate these graphs in the labelled case is described. Moreover, we enumerate the homeomorphically irreducible graphs in F and homeomorphically irreducible 2-connected planar graphs. Particular use is made of two-pole directed series-parallel networks. We also show that the number m of edges of graphs in F with n vertices satisfies the bound m <=3n-6, for n >= 6.
We describe the structure of 2-connected non-planar toroidal graphs with no K_{3,3}-subdivisions, using an appropriate substitution of planar networks into the edges of certain graphs called toroidal cores. The structural result is based on a refinement of the algorithmic results for graphs containing a fixed K_5-subdivision in [A. Gagarin and W. Kocay, "Embedding graphs containing K_5-subdivisions'', Ars Combin. 64 (2002), 33-49]. It allows to recognize these graphs in linear-time and makes possible to enumerate labelled 2-connected toroidal graphs containing no K_{3,3}-subdivisions and havin…
We provide a description of unlabelled enumeration techniques, with complete proofs, for graphs that can be canonically obtained by substituting 2-pole networks for the edges of core graphs. Using structure theorems for toroidal and projective-planar graphs containing no K33-subdivisions, we apply these techniques to obtain their unlabelled enumeration.
We give a simple formula for the number of hypertrees with $k$ hyperedges of given sizes and $n+1$ labelled vertices with prescribed degrees. A slight generalization of this formula counts labelled bipartite trees with prescribed degrees in each class of vertices.
We construct CW spheres from the lattices that arise as the closed sets of a convex closure, the meet-distributive lattices. These spheres are nearly polytopal, in the sense that their barycentric subdivisions are simplicial polytopes. The complete information on the numbers of faces and chains of faces in these spheres can be obtained from the defining lattices in a manner analogous to the relation between arrangements of hyperplanes and their underlying geometric intersection lattices.
Building on work by Zagier, Bousquet-Mélou et al., and Khamis, we give an asymptotic formula for the number of labelled interval orders on an $n$-element set.
We enumerate labelled and unlabelled Hamiltonian cycles in complete $n$-partite graphs $K_{d,d,\ldots,d}$ having exactly $d$ vertices in each part (in other words, Turán graphs $T(nd, n))$. We obtain recurrence relations that allow us to find the exact values $b_{n}^{(d)}$ of such cycles for arbitrary $n$ and $d$
We present the first combinatorial scheme for counting labelled 4-regular planar graphs through a complete recursive decomposition. More precisely, we show that the exponential generating function of labelled 4-regular planar graphs can be computed effectively as the solution of a system of equations, from which the coefficients can be extracted. As a byproduct, we also enumerate labelled 3-connected 4-regular planar graphs, and simple 4-regular rooted maps.
We enumerate rooted 2-connected and 3-connected surface maps with respect to vertices and edges. We also derive the bivariate version of the large face-width result for random 3-connected maps. These results are then used to derive asymptotic formulas for the number of labelled graphs of genus g (1-connected, 2-connected, and 3-connected graphs.)
In this paper, we generalize 2-trees by replacing triangles by quadrilaterals, pentagons or $k$-sided polygons ($k$-gons), where $k\geq 3$ is fixed. This generalization, to $k$-gonal 2-trees, is natural and is closely related, in the planar case, to some specializations of the cell-growth problem. Our goal is the labelled and unlabelled enumeration of $k$-gonal 2-trees according to the number $n$ of $k$-gons. We give explicit formulas in the labelled case, and, in the unlabelled case, recursive and asymptotic formulas.
We consider the counting problem of the number of \textit{leaf-labeled increasing trees}, where internal nodes may have an arbitrary number of descendants. The set of all such trees is a discrete representation of the genealogies obtained under certain population-genetical models such as multiple-merger coalescents. While the combinatorics of the binary trees among those are well understood, for the number of all trees only an approximate asymptotic formula is known. In this work, we validate this formula up to constant terms and compare the asymptotic behavior of the number of all leaf-labell…
This work is a follow-up of the article [Proc.\ London Math.\ Soc.\ 119(2):358--378, 2019], where the authors solved the problem of counting labelled 4-regular planar graphs. In this paper, we obtain a precise asymptotic estimate for the number $g_n$ of labelled 4-regular planar graphs on $n$ vertices. Our estimate is of the form $g_n \sim g\cdot n^{-7/2} ρ^{-n} n!$, where $g>0$ is a constant and $ρ\approx 0.24377$ is the radius of convergence of the generating function $\sum_{n\ge 0}g_n x^n/n!$, and conforms to the universal pattern obtained previously in the enumeration of several classes of…
We obtain explicit formulas for the enumeration of labelled parallelogram polyominoes. These are the polyominoes that are bounded, above and below, by north-east lattice paths going from the origin to a point (k,n). The numbers from 1 and n (the labels) are bijectively attached to the $n$ north steps of the above-bounding path, with the condition that they appear in increasing values along consecutive north steps. We calculate the Frobenius characteristic of the action of the symmetric group S_n on these labels. All these enumeration results are refined to take into account the area of these p…
We show that the number $g_n$ of labelled series-parallel graphs on $n$ vertices is asymptotically $g_n \sim g\cdot n^{-5/2} γ^n n!$, where $γ$ and $g$ are explicit computable constants. We show that the number of edges in random series-parallel graphs is asymptotically normal with linear mean and variance, and that the number of edges is sharply concentrated around its expected value. Similar results are proved for labelled outerplanar graphs and for graphs not containing $K_{2,3}$ as a minor.
We show an asymptotic estimate for the number of labelled planar graphs on $n$ vertices. We also find limit laws for the number of edges, the number of connected components, and other parameters in random planar graphs.
Harary and Palmer announced an enumeration problem of labelled self-complementary graphs at the end of their book (Graphical Enumeration, Academic Press, New York and London, 1973). This paper resolves this problem. A method for solving this problem leads to the derivation of following formulas: (a) A formula on the number of labelled graphs with the given order of automorphism groups of those graphs. (b) A formula on the number of unlabelled graphs with the given order of automorphism groups of those graphs. (c) A formula on the number of labelled self-complementary graphs with the given orde…
We enumerate chord diagrams without loops and without both loops and parallel chords. We show that the former ones describe Hamiltonian paths in $n$-dimensional octahedrons. The latter ones are also known as shapes. For labelled diagrams we obtain generating functions, for unlabelled ones we derive recurrence relations.
We study the class L of link-types that admit a K4-minor-free diagram, i.e., they can be projected on the plane so that the resulting graph does not contain any subdivision of K4. We prove that L is the closure of a subclass of torus links under the operation of connected sum. Using this structural result, we enumerate L and subclasses of it, with respect to the minimum number of crossings or edges in a projection of L' in L. Further, we obtain counting formulas and asymptotic estimates for the connected K4-minor-free link-diagrams, minimal K4-minor-free link-diagrams, and K4-minor-free diagra…
A poset is (3+1)-free if it does not contain the disjoint union of chains of length 3 and 1 as an induced subposet. These posets are the subject of the (3+1)-free conjecture of Stanley and Stembridge. Recently, Lewis and Zhang have enumerated \emph{graded} (3+1)-free posets, but until now the general enumeration problem has remained open. We enumerate all (3+1)-free posets by giving a decomposition into bipartite graphs, and obtain generating functions for (3+1)-free posets with labelled or unlabelled vertices.
We determine an asymptotic formula for the number of labelled 2-connected (simple) graphs on $n$ vertices and $m$ edges, provided that $m-n\to\infty$ and $m=O(n\log n)$ as $n\to\infty$. This is the entire range of $m$ not covered by previous results. The proof involves determining properties of the core and kernel of random graphs with minimum degree at least 2. The case of 2-edge-connectedness is treated similarly. We also obtain formulae for the number of 2-connected graphs with given degree sequence for most (`typical') sequences. Our main result solves a problem of Wright from 1983.
We enumerate smooth and rationally smooth Schubert varieties in the classical finite types A, B, C, and D, extending Haiman's enumeration for type A. To do this enumeration, we introduce a notion of staircase diagrams on a graph. These combinatorial structures are collections of steps of irregular size, forming interconnected staircases over the given graph. Over a Dynkin-Coxeter graph, the set of "nearly-maximally labelled" staircase diagrams is in bijection with the set of Schubert varieties with a complete Billey-Postnikov (BP) decomposition. We can then use an earlier result of the authors…
It is shown that the number of labelled graphs with n vertices that can be embedded in the orientable surface S_g of genus g grows asymptotically like $c^{(g)}n^{5(g-1)/2-1}γ^n n!$ where $c^{(g)}>0$, and $γ\approx 27.23$ is the exponential growth rate of planar graphs. This generalizes the result for the planar case g=0, obtained by Gimenez and Noy. An analogous result for non-orientable surfaces is obtained. In addition, it is proved that several parameters of interest behave asymptotically as in the planar case. It follows, in particular, that a random graph embeddable in S_g has a unique 2-…
A poset is (3+1)-free if it does not contain the disjoint union of chains of length 3 and 1 as an induced subposet. These posets play a central role in the (3+1)-free conjecture of Stanley and Stembridge. Lewis and Zhang have enumerated (3+1)-free posets in the graded case by decomposing them into bipartite graphs, but until now the general enumeration problem has remained open. We give a finer decomposition into bipartite graphs which applies to all (3+1)-free posets and obtain generating functions which count (3+1)-free posets with labelled or unlabelled vertices. Using this decomposition, w…
In this paper we find asymptotic enumerations for the number of line graphs on $n$-labelled vertices and for different types of related combinatorial objects called 2-covers. We find that the number of 2-covers, $s_n$, and proper 2-covers, $t_n$, on $[n]$ both have asymptotic growth $$ s_n\sim t_n\sim B_{2n}2^{-n}\exp(-\frac12\log(2n/\log n))= B_{2n}2^{-n}\sqrt{\frac{\log n}{2n}}, $$ where $B_{2n}$ is the $2n$th Bell number, while the number of restricted 2-covers, $u_n$, restricted, proper 2-covers on $[n]$, $v_n$, and line graphs $l_n$, all have growth $$ u_n\sim v_n\sim l_n\sim B_{2n}2^{-n}…
We study the enumeration problem for different kind of tree parking functions introduced recently, called tree parking functions, tree parking distributions, prime tree parking functions, and prime tree parking distributions, for rooted labelled trees of important combinatorial tree families including labelled ordered, unordered and binary trees. Using combinatorial decompositions of the underlying structures yields, after solving the resulting equations, implicit characterizations of suitable generating functions of the total number of such tree parking functions for trees of size $n$ and $n$…
The purpose of this paper is to enumerate various classes of cyclically colored m-gonal plane cacti, called m-ary cacti. This combinatorial problem is motivated by the topological classification of complex polynomials having at most m critical values, studied by Zvonkin and others. We obtain explicit formulae for both labelled and unlabelled m-ary cacti, according to i) the number of polygons, ii) the vertex-color distribution, iii) the vertex-degree distribution of each color. We also enumerate m-ary cacti according to the order of their automorphism group. Using a generalization of Otter's f…
A seminal technique of theoretical physics called Wick's theorem interprets the Gaussian matrix integral of the products of the trace of powers of Hermitian matrices as the number of labelled maps with a given degree sequence, sorted by their Euler characteristics. This leads to the map enumeration results analogous to those obtained by combinatorial methods. In this paper we show that the enumeration of the graphs embeddable on a given 2-dimensional surface (a main research topic of contemporary enumerative combinatorics) can also be formulated as the Gaussian matrix integral of an ice-type p…
We give combinatorial proofs of some enumeration formulas involving labelled threshold, quasi-threshold, loop-threshold and quasi-loop-threshold graphs. In each case we count by number of vertices and number of components. For threshold graphs, we also count by number of dominating vertices, and for loop-threshold graphs we count by number of looped dominating vertices. We also obtain an analog of the Frobenius formula (connecting Eulerian numbers and Stirling numbers of the second kind) in the context of labelled threshold graphs.
We determine the number of labelled chordal planar graphs with $n$ vertices, which is asymptotically $c_1\cdot n^{-5/2} γ^n n!$ for a constant $c_1>0$ and $γ\approx 11.89235$. We also determine the number of rooted simple chordal planar maps with $n$ edges, which is asymptotically $c_2 n^{-3/2} δ^n$, where $δ= 1/σ\approx 6.40375$, and $σ$ is an algebraic number of degree 12. The proofs are based on combinatorial decompositions and singularity analysis. Chordal planar graphs (or maps) are a natural example of a subcritical class of graphs in which the class of 3-connected graphs is relatively r…
We characterize classes of graphs closed under taking vertex-minors and having no $P_n$ and no disjoint union of $n$ copies of the $1$-subdivision of $K_{1,n}$ for some $n$. Our characterization is described in terms of a tree of radius $2$ whose leaves are labelled by the vertices of a graph $G$, and the width is measured by the maximum possible cut-rank of a partition of $V(G)$ induced by splitting an internal node of the tree to make two components. The minimum width possible is called the depth-$2$ rank-brittleness of $G$. We prove that for all $n$, every graph with sufficiently large dept…
We present a unified general method for the asymptotic study of graphs from the so-called "subcritical"$ $ graph classes, which include the classes of cacti graphs, outerplanar graphs, and series-parallel graphs. This general method works both in the labelled and unlabelled framework. The main results concern the asymptotic enumeration and the limit laws of properties of random graphs chosen from subcritical classes. We show that the number $g_n/n!$ (resp. $g_n$) of labelled (resp. unlabelled) graphs on $n$ vertices from a subcritical graph class ${G}=\cup_n {G_n}$ satisfies asymptotically the…
In this paper we give a method for constructing systematically all simple 2-connected graphs with n vertices from the set of simple 2-connected graphs with n-1 vertices, by means of two operations: subdivision of an edge and addition of a vertex. The motivation of our study comes from the theory of non-ideal gases and, more specifically, from the virial equation of state. It is a known result of Statistical Mechanics that the coefficients in the virial equation of state are sums over labelled 2-connected graphs. These graphs correspond to clusters of particles. Thus, theoretically, the virial …
Let $Δ=\{ δ_1,δ_2,...,δ_m \} $ be a finite set of 2-connected patterns, i.e. graphs up to vertex relabelling. We study the generating function $D_{Δ}(z,u_1,u_2,...,u_m),$ which counts polygon dissections and marks subgraph copies of $δ_i$ with the variable $u_i$. We prove that this is always algebraic, through an explicit combinatorial decomposition depending on $Δ$. The decomposition also gives a defining system for $D_{Δ}(z,\mathbf{0})$, which encodes polygon dissections that restrict these patterns as subgraphs. In this way, we are able to extract normal limit laws for the patterns when the…
We provide precise asymptotic estimates for the number of several classes of labelled cubic planar graphs, and we analyze properties of such random graphs under the uniform distribution. This model was first analyzed by Bodirsky et al. (Random Structures Algorithms 2007). We revisit their work and obtain new results on the enumeration of cubic planar graphs and on random cubic planar graphs. In particular, we determine the exact probability of a random cubic planar graph being connected, and we show that the distribution of the number of triangles in random cubic planar graphs is asymptoticall…
The basic functional equations for connected and 2-connnected graphs can be traced back to the statistical physicists Mayer and Husimi. They play an essential role in establishing rigorously the virial expansion for imperfect gases. We survey this approach and inspired by these equations, we investigate the problem of enumerating some classes of connected graphs all of whose blocks are contained in a given class B. Included are the species of Husimi graphs (B = "complete graphs"), cacti (B = "unoriented cycles"), and oriented cacti (B = "oriented cycles"). For each of these, we consider the qu…
Tutte has described in the book "Connectivity in graphs" a canonical decomposition of any graph into 3-connected components. In this article we translate (using the language of symbolic combinatorics) Tutte's decomposition into a general grammar expressing any family of graphs (with some stability conditions) in terms of the 3-connected subfamily. A key ingredient we use is an extension of the so-called dissymmetry theorem, which yields negative signs in the grammar. As a main application we recover in a purely combinatorial way the analytic expression found by Giménez and Noy for the series c…
We present a bijection between some quadrangular dissections of an hexagon and unrooted binary trees, with interesting consequences for enumeration, mesh compression and graph sampling. Our bijection yields an efficient uniform random sampler for 3-connected planar graphs, which turns out to be determinant for the quadratic complexity of the current best known uniform random sampler for labelled planar graphs [{\bf Fusy, Analysis of Algorithms 2005}]. It also provides an encoding for the set $\mathcal{P}(n)$ of $n$-edge 3-connected planar graphs that matches the entropy bound $\frac1n\log_2|\m…
