We show that the number $g_n$ of labelled series-parallel graphs on $n$ vertices is asymptotically $g_n \sim g\cdot n^{-5/2} γ^n n!$, where $γ$ and $g$ are explicit computable constants. We show that the number of edges in random series-parallel graphs is asymptotically normal with linear mean and variance, and that the number of edges is sharply concentrated around its expected value. Similar results are proved for labelled outerplanar graphs and for graphs not containing $K_{2,3}$ as a minor.
We show an asymptotic estimate for the number of labelled planar graphs on $n$ vertices. We also find limit laws for the number of edges, the number of connected components, and other parameters in random planar graphs.
It is shown that the number of labelled graphs with n vertices that can be embedded in the orientable surface S_g of genus g grows asymptotically like $c^{(g)}n^{5(g-1)/2-1}γ^n n!$ where $c^{(g)}>0$, and $γ\approx 27.23$ is the exponential growth rate of planar graphs. This generalizes the result for the planar case g=0, obtained by Gimenez and Noy. An analogous result for non-orientable surfaces is obtained. In addition, it is proved that several parameters of interest behave asymptotically as in the planar case. It follows, in particular, that a random graph embeddable in S_g has a unique 2-…
We enumerate chord diagrams without loops and without both loops and parallel chords. We show that the former ones describe Hamiltonian paths in $n$-dimensional octahedrons. The latter ones are also known as shapes. For labelled diagrams we obtain generating functions, for unlabelled ones we derive recurrence relations.
Using three supercomputers, we broke a record set in 2011, in the enumeration of non-isomorphic regular graphs by expanding the sequence of A006820 in Online Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences (OEIS), to achieve the number for 4-regular graphs of order 23 as 429,668,180,677,439, while discovering serval optimal regular graphs with minimum average shortest path lengths (ASPL) that can be used as interconnection networks for parallel computers. The number of 4-regular graphs and the optimal graphs, extremely time-consuming to calculate, result from a method we adapt from GENREG, a classical regul…
We obtain explicit formulas for the enumeration of labelled parallelogram polyominoes. These are the polyominoes that are bounded, above and below, by north-east lattice paths going from the origin to a point (k,n). The numbers from 1 and n (the labels) are bijectively attached to the $n$ north steps of the above-bounding path, with the condition that they appear in increasing values along consecutive north steps. We calculate the Frobenius characteristic of the action of the symmetric group S_n on these labels. All these enumeration results are refined to take into account the area of these p…
Given a sequence of integers $a_j, j\ge 1,$ a multiset is a combinatorial object composed of unordered components, such that there are exactly $a_j$ one-component multisets of size $j.$ When $a_j\asymp j^{r-1} y^j$ for some $r>0$, $y\geq 1$, then the multiset is called {\em expansive}. Let $c_n$ be the number of multisets of total size $n$. Using a probabilistic approach, we prove for expansive multisets that $c_n/c_{n+1}\to 1$ and that $c_n/c_{n+1}<1$ for large enough $n$. This allows us to prove Monadic Second Order Limit Laws for expansive multisets. The above results are extended to a clas…
Fix an integer $r\geq 3$. We consider metric spaces on $n$ points such that the distance between any two points lies in $\{1,..., r\}$. Our main result describes their approximate structure for large $n$. As a consequence, we show that the number of these metric spaces is $\lceil \frac{r+1}{2}\rceil ^{{n\choose 2} + o(n^2)}$. Related results in the continuous setting have recently been proved by Kozma, Meyerovitch, Peled, and Samotij. When $r$ is even, our structural characterization is more precise, and implies that almost all such metric spaces have all distances at least $r/2$. As an easy c…
The triangulations of a regular convex polygon are enumerated according to the number of diagonals parallel to a fixed edge. The enumeration uses the Shapiro convolution identity, as well as an interpretation of this identity in terms of triangulations.
We report on the implementation of an algorithm for computing the set of all regular triangulations of finitely many points in Euclidean space. This algorithm, which we call down-flip reverse search, can be restricted, e.g., to computing full triangulations only; this case is particularly relevant for tropical geometry. Most importantly, down-flip reverse search allows for massive parallelization, i.e., it scales well even for many cores. Our implementation allows to compute the triangulations of much larger point sets than before.
For a given combinatorial class $\mathcal{C}$ we study the class $\mathcal{G} = \mathrm{MSET}(\mathcal{C})$ satisfying the multiset construction, that is, any object in $\mathcal{G}$ is uniquely determined by a set of $\mathcal{C}$-objects paired with their multiplicities. For example, $\mathrm{MSET}(\mathbb{N})$ is (isomorphic to) the class of number partitions of positive integers, a prominent and well-studied case. The multiset construction appears naturally in the study of unlabelled objects, for example graphs or various structures related to number partitions. Our main result establishes…
Given graphs $G$ and $H$, we propose a method to implicitly enumerate topological-minor-embeddings of $H$ in $G$ using decision diagrams. We show a useful application of our method to enumerating subgraphs characterized by forbidden topological minors, that is, planar, outerplanar, series-parallel, and cactus subgraphs. Computational experiments show that our method can find all planar subgraphs in a given graph at most five orders of magnitude faster than a naive backtracking-based method.
Consider a family $\mathcal{T}$ of 3-connected graphs of moderate growth, and let $\mathcal{G}$ be the class of graphs whose 3-connected components are graphs in $\mathcal{T}$. We present a general framework for analyzing such graphs classes based on singularity analysis of generating functions, which generalizes previously studied cases such as planar graphs and series-parallel graphs. We provide a general result for the asymptotic number of graphs in $\mathcal{G}$, based on the singularities of the exponential generating function associated to $\mathcal{T}$. We derive limit laws, which are e…
Estimating the frequency of sub-graphs is of importance for many tasks, including sub-graph isomorphism, kernel-based anomaly detection, and network structure analysis. While multiple algorithms were proposed for full enumeration or sampling-based estimates, these methods fail in very large graphs. Recent advances in parallelization allow for estimates of total sub-graphs counts in very large graphs. The task of counting the frequency of each sub-graph associated with each vertex also received excellent solutions for undirected graphs. However, there is currently no good solution for very larg…
Various networks are broadly and deeply applied in real-life applications. Reliability is the most important index for measuring the performance of all network types. Among the various algorithms, only implicit enumeration algorithms, such as depth-first-search, breadth-search-first, universal generating function methodology, binary-decision diagram, and binary-addition-tree algorithm (BAT), can be used to calculate the exact network reliability. However, implicit enumeration algorithms can only be used to solve small-scale network reliability problems. The BAT was recently proposed as a simpl…
Let $Ω$ be an algebraic closure of ${\mathbb Q}_p$ and let $F$ be a finite extension of ${\mathbb Q}_p$ contained in $Ω$. Given positive integers $f$ and $e$, the number of extensions $K/F$ contained in $Ω$ with residue degree $f$ and ramification index $e$ was computed by Krasner. This paper is concerned with the number ${\mathfrak I}(F,f,e)$ of $F$-isomorphism classes of such extensions. We determine ${\mathfrak I}(F,f,e)$ completely when $p^2\nmid e$ and get partial results when $p^2\parallel e$. When $s$ is large, ${\mathfrak I}({\mathbb Q}_p,f,e)$ is equal to the number of isomorphism cla…
We consider the class F of 2-connected non-planar K_{3,3}-subdivision-free graphs that are embeddable in the projective plane. We show that these graphs admit a unique decomposition as a graph K_5 (the core) where the edges are replaced by two-pole networks constructed from 2-connected planar graphs. A method to enumerate these graphs in the labelled case is described. Moreover, we enumerate the homeomorphically irreducible graphs in F and homeomorphically irreducible 2-connected planar graphs. Particular use is made of two-pole directed series-parallel networks. We also show that the number m…
In this article, we study directed graphs (digraphs) with a coloring constraint due to Von Neumann and related to Nim-type games. This is equivalent to the notion of kernels of digraphs, which appears in numerous fields of research such as game theory, complexity theory, artificial intelligence (default logic, argumentation in multi-agent systems), 0-1 laws in monadic second order logic, combinatorics (perfect graphs)... Kernels of digraphs lead to numerous difficult questions (in the sense of NP-completeness, #P-completeness). However, we show here that it is possible to use a generating func…
We present a unified general method for the asymptotic study of graphs from the so-called "subcritical"$ $ graph classes, which include the classes of cacti graphs, outerplanar graphs, and series-parallel graphs. This general method works both in the labelled and unlabelled framework. The main results concern the asymptotic enumeration and the limit laws of properties of random graphs chosen from subcritical classes. We show that the number $g_n/n!$ (resp. $g_n$) of labelled (resp. unlabelled) graphs on $n$ vertices from a subcritical graph class ${G}=\cup_n {G_n}$ satisfies asymptotically the…
