This paper concerns towers of curves over a finite field with many rational points, following Garcia--Stichtenoth and Elkies. We present a new method to produce such towers. A key ingredient is the study of algebraic solutions to Fuchsian differential equations modulo $p$. We apply our results to towers of modular curves, and find new asymptotically good towers.
The explicit construction of function fields tower with many rational points relative to the genus in the tower play a key role for the construction of asymptotically good algebraic-geometric codes. In 1997 Garcia, Stichtenoth and Thomas [6] exhibited two recursive asymptotically good Kummer towers over any non-prime field. Wulftange determined the limit of one tower in his PhD thesis [13]. In this paper we determine the limit of another tower [14].
In this paper we study general conditions to prove the infiniteness of the genus of certain towers of function fields over a perfect field. We show that many known examples of towers with infinite genus are particular cases of these conditions.
In this work, we give sufficient conditions in order to have finite ramification locus in sequences of function fields defined by different kind of Kummer extensions. These conditions can be easily implemented in a computer to generate several examples. We present some new examples of asymptotically good towers of Kummer type and we show that many known examples can be obtained from our general results.
In this article we investigate the automorphism group of an asymptotically optimal tower of function fields introduced by Garcia and Stichtenoth. In particular we provide a detailed description of the decomposition group of some rational places. This group acts on the algebraic-geometric standard codes obtained by the Garcia-Stichtenoth tower exceeding the Gilbert-Varshamov bound. The fields fixed by the decomposition groups form an asymptotically optimal non-Galois subtower, which has been first found by Bezerra and Garcia and yields an improvement for computing codes above the Gilbert-Varsha…
We propose a systematic method to produce potentially good recursive towers over finite fields. The graph point of view, so as some magma and sage computations are used in this process. We also establish some theoretical functional criterion ensuring the existence of many rational points on a recursive tower. Both points are illustrated on an example, from the production process, to the theoretical study, using this functional criterion, of the parameters of the obtained potentially good tower.
We give explicit equations for the simplest towers of Drinfeld modular curves over any finite field, and observe that they coincide with the asymptotically optimal towers of curves constructed by Garcia and Stichtenoth.
We study a tower of function fields of Artin-Schreier type over a finite field with $2^s$ elements. The study of the asymptotic behavior of this tower was left as an open problem by Beelen, García and Stichtenoth in $2006$. We prove that this tower is asymptotically good for $s$ even and asymptotically bad for $s$ odd.
We analyze the geometry of the tower of Lubin-Tate deformation spaces, which parametrize deformations of a one-dimensional formal module of height h together with level structure. According to the conjecture of Deligne-Carayol, these spaces realize the local Langlands correspondence in their l-adic cohomology. This conjecture is now a theorem, but currently there is no purely local proof. Working in the equal characteristic case, we find a family of affinoids in the Lubin-Tate tower with good reduction equal to a rather curious nonsingular hypersurface, whose equation we present explicitly. Gr…
We give a new way to study recursive towers of curves over a finite field, defined from a bottom curve $\Cun$ and a correspondence $\Cdeux$ on $\Cun$.In particular, we study their asymptotic behavior. A close examination of singularities leads to a necessary condition for a tower to be asymptotically good. Then, spectral theory on a directed graph and considerations on the class of $\Cdeux$ in $\NS (\Cun \times \Cun)$ lead to the fact that, under some mild assumptions, a recursive tower which does not reach Drinfeld-Vladut bound cannot be optimal in Tsfasmann-Vladut sense. Results are applied …
In this paper, we will give an overview of known and new techniques on how one can obtain explicit equations for candidates of good towers of function fields. The techniques are founded in modular theory (both the classical modular theory and the Drinfeld modular theory). In the classical modular setup, optimal towers can be obtained, while in the Drinfeld modular setup, good towers over any non-prime field may be found. We illustrate the theory with several examples, thus explaining some known towers as well as giving new examples of good explicitly defined towers of function fields.
The number A(q) is the upper limit of the ratio of the maximum number of points of a curve defined over $\Fq$ to the genus. By constructing class field towers with good parameters we present improvements of lower bounds of A(q) for q an odd power of a prime.
In this paper we investigate examples of good and optimal Drinfeld modular towers of function fields. Surprisingly, the optimality of these towers has not been investigated in full detail in the literature. We also give an algorithmic approach on how to obtain explicit defining equations for some of these towers and in particular give a new explicit example of an optimal tower over a quadratic finite field.
We give a general recipe for explicitly constructing asymptotically optimal towers of modular curves such as {X_0(l^n): n=1,2,3,...}. We illustrate the method by giving equations for eight towers with various geometric features. We conclude by observing that such towers are all of a specific recursive form, and speculate that perhaps every tower of this form that attains the Drinfeld-Vladut bound is modular.
We introduce in this article a new method to estimate the minimum distance of codes from algebraic surfaces. This lower bound is generic, i.e. can be applied to any surface, and turns out to be ``liftable'' under finite morphisms, paving the way toward the construction of good codes from towers of surfaces. In the same direction, we establish a criterion for a surface with a fixed finite set of closed points $\mathcal P$ to have an infinite tower of $\ell$--étale covers in which $\mathcal P$ splits totally. We conclude by stating several open problems. In particular, we relate the existence of…
Since Serre gave his famous Harvard lectures in 1985 on various aspects of the theory of algebraic curves defined over a finite field, there have been many developments. In this survey article, an overview will be given on the developments concerning the quantity $A(q)$, known as Ihara's constant. The main focus will be on explicit techniques and in particular recursively defined towers of function fields over a finite field, which have given good lower bounds for Ihara's constant in the past.
In 2002, M. A. Tsfasman and S. G. Vlăduţ formulated the generalized Brauer-Siegel conjecture for asymptotically exact families of number fields. In this article, we establish this conjecture for asymptotically good towers and asymptotically bad families of number fields with solvable normal closure.
In this paper we construct Galois towers with good asymptotic properties over any non-prime finite field $\mathbb F_{\ell}$; i.e., we construct sequences of function fields $\mathcal{N}=(N_1 \subset N_2 \subset \cdots)$ over $\mathbb F_{\ell}$ of increasing genus, such that all the extensions $N_i/N_1$ are Galois extensions and the number of rational places of these function fields grows linearly with the genus. The limits of the towers satisfy the same lower bounds as the best currently known lower bounds for the Ihara constant for non-prime finite fields. Towers with these properties are imp…
In 2000, based on his procedure for constructing explicit towers of modular curves, Elkies deduced explicit equations of rank-2 Drinfeld modular curves which coincide with the asymptotically optimal towers of curves constructed by Garcia and Stichtenoth. In 2015, Bassa, Beelen, Garcia, and Stichtenoth constructed a celebrated (recursive and good) tower (BBGS-tower for short) of curves and outlined a modular interpretation of the defining equations. Soon after that, Gekeler studied in depth the modular curves coming from sparse Drinfeld modules. In this paper, to establish a link between these …
For a family of K3 surfaces we implement a variation of a general construction of towers of algebraic curves over finite fields given in a previous paper. As a result we get a good tower over $k=\mathbb{F}_{p^2}$, that is optimal if $p=3$.
We study the asymptotic behavior of a family of algebraic geometry codes which are 4-quasi transitive linear codes. We prove that this family is asymptotically good over many prime fields using towers of algebraic function fields.
We study and explicitly construct some families of asymptotically exact sequences of algebraic function fields. It turns out that these families have an asymptotical class number widely greater than the general Lachaud - Martin-Deschamps bounds. We emphasize that we obtain asymptotically exact sequences of algebraic function fields over any finite field $\F_q$, in particular when $q$ is not a square and that these sequences are dense towers.
Given a prime $p$, a number field $\K$ and a finite set of places $S$ of $\K$, let $\K_S$ be the maximal pro-$p$ extension of $\K$ unramified outside $S$. Using the Golod-Shafarevich criterion one can often show that $\K_S/\K$ is infinite. In both the tame and wild cases we construct infinite subextensions with bounded ramification using the refined Golod-Shafarevich criterion. In the tame setting we achieve new records on Martinet constants (root discriminant bounds) in the totally real and totally complex cases. We are also able to answer a question of Ihara by producing infinite asymptotica…
We study a natural question in the Iwasawa theory of algebraic curves of genus $>1$. Fix a prime number $p$. Let $X$ be a smooth, projective, geometrically irreducible curve defined over a number field $K$ of genus $g>1$, such that the Jacobian of $X$ has good ordinary reduction at the primes above $p$. Fix an odd prime $p$ and for any integer $n>1$, let $K_n^{(p)}$ denote the degree-$p^n$ extension of $K$ contained in $K(μ_{p^{\infty}})$. We prove explicit results for the growth of $\#X(K_n^{(p)})$ as $n\rightarrow \infty$. When the Jacobian of $X$ has rank zero and the associated adelic Galo…
In this work, we use the notion of ``symmetry'' of functions for an extension $K/L$ of finite fields to produce extensions of a function field $F/K$ in which almost all places of degree one split completely. Then we introduce the notion of ``quasi-symmetry'' of functions for $K/L$, and demonstrate its use in producing extensions of $F/K$ in which all places of degree one split completely. Using these techniques, we are able to restrict the ramification either to one chosen rational place, or entirely to non-rational places. We then apply these methods to the related problem of building asympto…
Let p be a prime number, and let K be a number field. For p=2, assume moreover K totally imaginary. In this note we prove the existence of asymptotically good extensions L{K of cohomological dimension 2 in which infinitely many primes split completely. Our result is inspired by a recent work of Hajir, Maire, and Ramakrishna [7].
Rank-2 Drinfeld modules are a function-field analogue of elliptic curves, and the purpose of this paper is to investigate similarities and differences between rank-2 Drinfeld modules and elliptic curves in terms of supersingularity. Specifically, we provide an explicit formula of a supersingular polynomial for rank-2 Drinfeld modules and prove several basic properties. As an application, we give a numerical example of an asymptotically optimal tower of Drinfeld modular curves.
Let $E$ be an elliptic curve defined over a number field $F$ with good ordinary reduction at all primes above $p$, and let $F_\infty$ be a finitely ramified uniform pro-$p$ extension of $F$ containing the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension $F_{cyc}$. Set $F^{(n)}$ be the $n$-th layer of the tower, and $F^{(n)}_{cyc}$ the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of $F^{(n)}$. We study the growth of the rank of $E(F^{(n)})$ by analyzing the growth of the $λ$-invariant of the Selmer group over $F^{(n)}_{cyc}$ as $n\rightarrow \infty$. This method has its origins in work of A.Cuoco, who studied $\math…
We resolve a 1983 question of Serre by constructing curves with many points of every genus over every finite field. More precisely, we show that for every prime power q there is a positive constant c_q with the following property: for every non-negative integer g, there is a genus-g curve over F_q with at least c_q * g rational points over F_q. Moreover, we show that there exists a positive constant d such that for every q we can choose c_q = d * (log q). We show also that there is a constant c > 0 such that for every q and every n > 0, and for every sufficiently large g, there is a genus-g cu…
Locally repairable codes have been investigated extensively in recent years due to practical application in distributed storage as well as theoretical interest. However, not much work on asymptotical behavior of locally repairable codes has been done until now. In particular, there is a little result on constructive lower bound on asymptotical behavior of locally repairable codes. In this paper, we extend the construction given in \cite{BTV17} via automorphism groups of function field towers. The main advantage of our construction is to allow more flexibility of locality. Furthermore, we show …
Bazzi and Mitter [3] showed that binary dihedral group codes are asymptotically good. In this paper we prove that the dihedral group codes over any finite field with good mathematical properties are asymptotically good. If the characteristic of the field is even, we construct asymptotically good self-dual dihedral group codes. If the characteristic of the filed is odd, we construct both the asymptotically good self-orthogonal dihedral group codes, and the asymptotically good LCD dihedral group codes.
We give a new construction of algebraic codes which are efficiently list decodable from a fraction $1-R-\eps$ of adversarial errors where $R$ is the rate of the code, for any desired positive constant $\eps$. The worst-case list size output by the algorithm is $O(1/\eps)$, matching the existential bound for random codes up to constant factors. Further, the alphabet size of the codes is a constant depending only on $\eps$ - it can be made $\exp(\tilde{O}(1/\eps^2))$ which is not much worse than the lower bound of $\exp(Ω(1/\eps))$. The parameters we achieve are thus quite close to the existenti…
