Bazzi and Mitter [3] showed that binary dihedral group codes are asymptotically good. In this paper we prove that the dihedral group codes over any finite field with good mathematical properties are asymptotically good. If the characteristic of the field is even, we construct asymptotically good self-dual dihedral group codes. If the characteristic of the filed is odd, we construct both the asymptotically good self-orthogonal dihedral group codes, and the asymptotically good LCD dihedral group codes.
We characterize the structure of 2-quasi-cyclic codes over a finite field F by the so-called Goursat Lemma. With the characterization, we exhibit a necessary and sufficient condition for a 2-quasi-cyclic code being a dihedral code. And we obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for a self-dual 2-quasi-cyclic code being a dihedral code (if charF = 2), or a consta-dihedral code (if charF odd). As a consequence, any self-dual 2-quasi-cyclic code generated by one element must be (consta-)dihedral. In particular, any self-dual double circulant code must be (consta-)dihedral. Also, we show a nec…
It is proved in a reference (Fan, Lin, IEEE TIT, vol.67, pp.5016-5025) that the self-dual (LCD respectively) dihedral codes over a finite field~$F$ with ${|F|=q}$ are asymptotically good if $q$ is even (odd respectively). In this paper, we investigate the algebraic property and the asymptotic property of conta-dihedral codes over $F$, and show that: if $q$ is even or $4\,|\,(q-1)$, then the self-dual consta-dihedral codes are asymptotically good; otherwise, the LCD consta-dihedral codes are asymptotically good. And, with the help of a technique developed in this paper, some errors in the refer…
In this paper, we study the dihedral codes, i.e. the left ideals of $\mathbb{F}_qD_{n}$ in the case $\gcd(q, n) = 1$. An explicit algebraic description of the dihedral codes and their duals is obtained. In addition, a criterion for self-duality of a dihedral code is obtained. Bases, generating and check matrices of dihedral codes are constructed. Given a dihedral code, we consider exterior and interior codes that are induced by cyclic codes. Using this codes, some properties of generating matrices are described and a connection to cyclic code theory is established. In addition, some estimates …
Dihedral codes, particular cases of quasi-cyclic codes, have a nice algebraic structure which allows to store them efficiently. In this paper, we investigate it and prove some lower bounds on their dimension and minimum distance, in analogy with the theory of BCH codes. This allows us to construct dihedral codes with prescribed minimum distance. In the binary case, we present some examples of optimal dihedral codes obtained by this construction.
Let $m$ be an arbitrary positive integer and $D_{8m}$ be a dihedral group of order $8m$, i.e., $D_{8m}=\langle x,y\mid x^{4m}=1, y^2=1, yxy=x^{-1}\rangle$. Left ideals of the dihedral group algebra $\mathbb{F}_2[D_{8m}]$ are called binary left dihedral codes of length $8m$, and abbreviated as binary left $D_{8m}$-codes. In this paper, we give an explicit representation and enumeration for all distinct self-dual binary left $D_{8m}$-codes. These codes make up an important class of self-dual binary $[8m,4m]$-codes such that the dihedral group $D_{8m}$ is necessary a subgroup of the automorphism …
Let $\mathbb{F}_{q}$ be the finite field of $q$ elements and let $D_{2n}=\langle x,y\mid x^n=1, y^2=1, yxy=x^{n-1}\rangle$ be the dihedral group of order $n$. Left ideals of the group algebra $\mathbb{F}_{q}[D_{2n}]$ are known as left dihedral codes over $\mathbb{F}_{q}$ of length $2n$, and abbreviated as left $D_{2n}$-codes. Let ${\rm gcd}(n,q)=1$. In this paper, we give an explicit representation for the Euclidean hull of every left $D_{2n}$-code over $\mathbb{F}_{q}$. On this basis, we determine all distinct Euclidean LCD codes and Euclidean self-orthogonal codes which are left $D_{2n}$-cod…
Let $R$ be a finite commutative chain ring, $D_{2n}$ be the dihedral group of size $2n$ and $R[D_{2n}]$ be the dihedral group ring. In this paper, we completely characterize left ideals of $R[D_{2n}]$ (called left $D_{2n}$-codes) when ${\rm gcd}(char(R),n)=1$. In this way, we explore the structure of some skew-cyclic codes of length 2 over $R$ and also over $R\times S$, where $S$ is an isomorphic copy of $R$. As a particular result, we give the structure of cyclic codes of length 2 over $R$. In the case where $R=\F_{p^m}$ is a Galois field, we give a classification for left $D_{2N}$-codes over…
Let $D_{2n}=\langle x,y\mid x^n=1, y^2=1, yxy=x^{-1}\rangle$ be a dihedral group, and $R={\rm GR}(p^2,m)$ be a Galois ring of characteristic $p^2$ and cardinality $p^{2m}$ where $p$ is a prime. Left ideals of the group ring $R[D_{2n}]$ are called left dihedral codes over $R$ of length $2n$, and abbreviated as left $D_{2n}$-codes over $R$. Let ${\rm gcd}(n,p)=1$ in this paper. Then any left $D_{2n}$-code over $R$ is uniquely decomposed into a direct sum of concatenated codes with inner codes ${\cal A}_i$ and outer codes $C_i$, where ${\cal A}_i$ is a cyclic code over $R$ of length $n$ and $C_i$…
Self-dual double circulant codes of odd dimension are shown to be dihedral in even characteristic and consta-dihedral in odd characteristic. Exact counting formulae are derived for them and used to show they contain families of codes with relative distance satisfying a modified Gilbert-Varshamov bound.
This is a manuscript of a chapter prepared for a book. The good codes possess large information length and large minimum distance. A class of codes is said to be asymptotically good if there exists a positive real $δ$ such that, for any positive integer $N$ we can find a code in the class with code length greater than $N$, and with both the rate and the relative minimum distance greater than $δ$. The linear codes over any finite field are asymptotically good. More interestingly, the (asymptotic) GV-bound is a phase transition point for the linear codes; i.e., asymptotically speaking, the param…
We study the dihedral multi-reference alignment problem of estimating the orbit of a signal from multiple noisy observations of the signal, acted on by random elements of the dihedral group. We show that if the group elements are drawn from a generic distribution, the orbit of a generic signal is uniquely determined from the second moment of the observations. This implies that the optimal estimation rate in the high noise regime is proportional to the square of the variance of the noise. This is the first result of this type for multi-reference alignment over a non-abelian group with a non-uni…
Double negacirculant (DN) codes are the analogues in odd characteristic of double circulant codes. Self-dual DN codes of odd dimension are shown to be consta-dihedral. Exact counting formulae are derived for DN codes. The special class of length a power of two is studied by means of Dickson polynomials, and is shown to contain families of codes with relative distances satisfying a modified Gilbert-Varshamov bound.
A finite group with a cyclic normal subgroup N such that G/N is cyclic is said to be metacyclic. A code over a finite field F is a metacyclic code if it is a left ideal in the group algebra FG for G a metacyclic group. Metacyclic codes are generalizations of dihedral codes, and can be constructed as quasi-cyclic codes with an extra automorphism. In this paper, we prove that metacyclic codes form an asymptotically good family of codes. Our proof relies on a version of Artin's conjecture for primitive roots in arithmetic progression being true under the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis (GRH).
A computer calculation with Magma shows that there is no extremal self-dual binary code C of length 72, whose automorphism group contains the symmetric group of degree 3, the alternating group of degree 4 or the dihedral group of order 8. Combining this with the known results in the literature one obtains that Aut(C) has order at most 5 or isomorphic to the elementary abelian group of order 8.
We consider the regular subgroups of the automorphism group of the linear Hadamard code. These subgroups correspond to the regular subgroups of $GA(r,2)$, w.t.r action on the vectors of $F_2^{r}$, where $n=2^r-1 $ is the length of the Hamadard code. We show that the dihedral group $D_{2^{r-1}}$ is a regular subgroup of $GA(r,2)$ only when $r=3$. Following the approach of \cite{M} we study the regular subgroups of the Hamming code obtained from the regular subgroups of the automorphism group of the Hadamard code of length 15.
