We introduce in this article a new method to estimate the minimum distance of codes from algebraic surfaces. This lower bound is generic, i.e. can be applied to any surface, and turns out to be ``liftable'' under finite morphisms, paving the way toward the construction of good codes from towers of surfaces. In the same direction, we establish a criterion for a surface with a fixed finite set of closed points $\mathcal P$ to have an infinite tower of $\ell$--étale covers in which $\mathcal P$ splits totally. We conclude by stating several open problems. In particular, we relate the existence of asymptotically good codes from general type surfaces with a very ample canonical class to the behaviour of their number of rational points with respect to their $K^2$ and coherent Euler characteristic.
This paper concerns towers of curves over a finite field with many rational points, following Garcia--Stichtenoth and Elkies. We present a new method to produce such towers. A key ingredient is the study of algebraic solutions to Fuchsian differential equations modulo $p$. We apply our results to towers of modular curves, and find new asymptotically good towers.
We propose a systematic method to produce potentially good recursive towers over finite fields. The graph point of view, so as some magma and sage computations are used in this process. We also establish some theoretical functional criterion ensuring the existence of many rational points on a recursive tower. Both points are illustrated on an example, from the production process, to the theoretical study, using this functional criterion, of the parameters of the obtained potentially good tower.
For a family of K3 surfaces we implement a variation of a general construction of towers of algebraic curves over finite fields given in a previous paper. As a result we get a good tower over $k=\mathbb{F}_{p^2}$, that is optimal if $p=3$.
We analyze the geometry of the tower of Lubin-Tate deformation spaces, which parametrize deformations of a one-dimensional formal module of height h together with level structure. According to the conjecture of Deligne-Carayol, these spaces realize the local Langlands correspondence in their l-adic cohomology. This conjecture is now a theorem, but currently there is no purely local proof. Working in the equal characteristic case, we find a family of affinoids in the Lubin-Tate tower with good reduction equal to a rather curious nonsingular hypersurface, whose equation we present explicitly. Gr…
We study and explicitly construct some families of asymptotically exact sequences of algebraic function fields. It turns out that these families have an asymptotical class number widely greater than the general Lachaud - Martin-Deschamps bounds. We emphasize that we obtain asymptotically exact sequences of algebraic function fields over any finite field $\F_q$, in particular when $q$ is not a square and that these sequences are dense towers.
We give a new way to study recursive towers of curves over a finite field, defined from a bottom curve $\Cun$ and a correspondence $\Cdeux$ on $\Cun$.In particular, we study their asymptotic behavior. A close examination of singularities leads to a necessary condition for a tower to be asymptotically good. Then, spectral theory on a directed graph and considerations on the class of $\Cdeux$ in $\NS (\Cun \times \Cun)$ lead to the fact that, under some mild assumptions, a recursive tower which does not reach Drinfeld-Vladut bound cannot be optimal in Tsfasmann-Vladut sense. Results are applied …
Since Serre gave his famous Harvard lectures in 1985 on various aspects of the theory of algebraic curves defined over a finite field, there have been many developments. In this survey article, an overview will be given on the developments concerning the quantity $A(q)$, known as Ihara's constant. The main focus will be on explicit techniques and in particular recursively defined towers of function fields over a finite field, which have given good lower bounds for Ihara's constant in the past.
In this paper we construct Galois towers with good asymptotic properties over any non-prime finite field $\mathbb F_{\ell}$; i.e., we construct sequences of function fields $\mathcal{N}=(N_1 \subset N_2 \subset \cdots)$ over $\mathbb F_{\ell}$ of increasing genus, such that all the extensions $N_i/N_1$ are Galois extensions and the number of rational places of these function fields grows linearly with the genus. The limits of the towers satisfy the same lower bounds as the best currently known lower bounds for the Ihara constant for non-prime finite fields. Towers with these properties are imp…
We give effective bounds for the class number of any algebraic function field of genus $g$ defined over a finite field. These bounds depend on the possibly partial information on the number of places on each degree $\leq g$. Such bounds are especially useful for estimating the class number of function fields in towers of function fields over finite fields. We give examples in the case of asymptotically good towers. In particular we estimate the class number of function fields which are steps of towers having one or several positive Tsfasman-Vladut invariants. Note that the study is not done as…
We give a new construction of algebraic codes which are efficiently list decodable from a fraction $1-R-\eps$ of adversarial errors where $R$ is the rate of the code, for any desired positive constant $\eps$. The worst-case list size output by the algorithm is $O(1/\eps)$, matching the existential bound for random codes up to constant factors. Further, the alphabet size of the codes is a constant depending only on $\eps$ - it can be made $\exp(\tilde{O}(1/\eps^2))$ which is not much worse than the lower bound of $\exp(Ω(1/\eps))$. The parameters we achieve are thus quite close to the existenti…
Given a newform f, we extend Howard's results on the variation of Heegner points in the Hida family of f to a general quaternionic setting. More precisely, we build big Heegner points and big Heegner classes in terms of compatible families of Heegner points on towers of Shimura curves. The novelty of our approach, which systematically exploits the theory of optimal embeddings, consists in treating both the case of definite quaternion algebras and the case of indefinite quaternion algebras in a uniform way. We prove results on the size of Nekovář's extended Selmer groups attached to suitable bi…
We study a natural question in the Iwasawa theory of algebraic curves of genus $>1$. Fix a prime number $p$. Let $X$ be a smooth, projective, geometrically irreducible curve defined over a number field $K$ of genus $g>1$, such that the Jacobian of $X$ has good ordinary reduction at the primes above $p$. Fix an odd prime $p$ and for any integer $n>1$, let $K_n^{(p)}$ denote the degree-$p^n$ extension of $K$ contained in $K(μ_{p^{\infty}})$. We prove explicit results for the growth of $\#X(K_n^{(p)})$ as $n\rightarrow \infty$. When the Jacobian of $X$ has rank zero and the associated adelic Galo…
Locally recoverable (LRC) codes provide ways of recovering erased coordinates of the codeword without having to access each of the remaining coordinates. A subfamily of LRC codes with hierarchical locality (H-LRC codes) provides added flexibility to the construction by introducing several tiers of recoverability for correcting different numbers of erasures. We present a general construction of codes with 2-level hierarchical locality from maps between algebraic curves and specialize it to several code families obtained from quotients of curves by a subgroup of the automorphism group, including…
We resolve a 1983 question of Serre by constructing curves with many points of every genus over every finite field. More precisely, we show that for every prime power q there is a positive constant c_q with the following property: for every non-negative integer g, there is a genus-g curve over F_q with at least c_q * g rational points over F_q. Moreover, we show that there exists a positive constant d such that for every q we can choose c_q = d * (log q). We show also that there is a constant c > 0 such that for every q and every n > 0, and for every sufficiently large g, there is a genus-g cu…
We construct two infinite families of ball quotient compactifications birational to bielliptic surfaces. For each family, the volume spectrum of the associated noncompact finite volume ball quotient surfaces is the set of all positive integral multiples of $\frac{8}{3}π^{2}$, i.e., they attain all possible volumes of complex hyperbolic $2$-manifolds. The surfaces in one of the two families have all $2$-cusps, so that we can saturate the entire volume spectrum with $2$-cusped manifolds. Finally, we show that the associated neat lattices have infinite abelianization and finitely generated commut…
