Since Serre gave his famous Harvard lectures in 1985 on various aspects of the theory of algebraic curves defined over a finite field, there have been many developments. In this survey article, an overview will be given on the developments concerning the quantity $A(q)$, known as Ihara's constant. The main focus will be on explicit techniques and in particular recursively defined towers of function fields over a finite field, which have given good lower bounds for Ihara's constant in the past.
We revisit the theory of Ihara $L$-functions in the context initially studied by Bass and Hashimoto and more recently by Zakharov. In particular, we study if the Artin formalism is satisfied by these $L$-functions. As an application, we give a proof of the analogue of Iwasawa's asymptotic class number formula for the $p$-part of the number of spanning trees in branched $\mathbb{Z}_{p}$-towers of finite connected graphs using Ihara zeta and $L$-functions. Moreover, we relate a generator for the characteristic ideal of the finitely generated torsion Iwasawa module that governs the growth of the …
Let X be a curve over the finite field of q elements and let N(X), g(X) be its number of rational points and genus respectively. The Ihara constant A(q) is defined by the limit superior of N(X)/g(X) as the genus of X goes to infinity. In this paper, we employ a variant of Serre's class field tower method to obtain an improvement of the best known lower bounds on A(2) and A(3).
Over all non-prime finite fields, we construct some recursive towers of function fields with many rational places. Thus we obtain a substantial improvement on all known lower bounds for Ihara's quantity $A(\ell)$, for $\ell = p^n$ with $p$ prime and $n>3$ odd. We relate the explicit equations to Drinfeld modular varieties.
In this paper we construct Galois towers with good asymptotic properties over any non-prime finite field $\mathbb F_{\ell}$; i.e., we construct sequences of function fields $\mathcal{N}=(N_1 \subset N_2 \subset \cdots)$ over $\mathbb F_{\ell}$ of increasing genus, such that all the extensions $N_i/N_1$ are Galois extensions and the number of rational places of these function fields grows linearly with the genus. The limits of the towers satisfy the same lower bounds as the best currently known lower bounds for the Ihara constant for non-prime finite fields. Towers with these properties are imp…
We propose a systematic method to produce potentially good recursive towers over finite fields. The graph point of view, so as some magma and sage computations are used in this process. We also establish some theoretical functional criterion ensuring the existence of many rational points on a recursive tower. Both points are illustrated on an example, from the production process, to the theoretical study, using this functional criterion, of the parameters of the obtained potentially good tower.
We give a new way to study recursive towers of curves over a finite field, defined from a bottom curve $\Cun$ and a correspondence $\Cdeux$ on $\Cun$.In particular, we study their asymptotic behavior. A close examination of singularities leads to a necessary condition for a tower to be asymptotically good. Then, spectral theory on a directed graph and considerations on the class of $\Cdeux$ in $\NS (\Cun \times \Cun)$ lead to the fact that, under some mild assumptions, a recursive tower which does not reach Drinfeld-Vladut bound cannot be optimal in Tsfasmann-Vladut sense. Results are applied …
Given a prime $p$, a number field $\K$ and a finite set of places $S$ of $\K$, let $\K_S$ be the maximal pro-$p$ extension of $\K$ unramified outside $S$. Using the Golod-Shafarevich criterion one can often show that $\K_S/\K$ is infinite. In both the tame and wild cases we construct infinite subextensions with bounded ramification using the refined Golod-Shafarevich criterion. In the tame setting we achieve new records on Martinet constants (root discriminant bounds) in the totally real and totally complex cases. We are also able to answer a question of Ihara by producing infinite asymptotica…
Let $\ell$ be a rational prime. Previously, abelian $\ell$-towers of multigraphs were introduced which are analogous to $\mathbb{Z}_{\ell}$-extensions of number fields. It was shown that for a certain class of towers of bouquets, the growth of the $\ell$-part of the number of spanning trees behaves in a predictable manner (analogous to a well-known theorem of Iwasawa for $\mathbb{Z}_{\ell}$-extensions of number fields). In this paper, we give a generalization to a broader class of regular abelian $\ell$-towers of bouquets than was originally considered. To carry this out, we observe that certa…
We consider a tower of function fields F=(F_n)_{n\geq 0} over a finite field F_q and a finite extension E/F_0 such that the sequence \mathcal{E):=(EF_n)_{n\goq 0} is a tower over the field F_q. Then we deal with the following: What can we say about the invariants of \mathcal{E}; i.e., the asymptotic number of places of degree r for any r\geq 1 in \mathcal{E}, if those of F are known? We give a method based on explicit extensions for constructing towers of function fields over F_q with finitely many prescribed invariants being positive, and towers of function fields over F_q, for q a square, wi…
Let $\ell$ be a rational prime. Previously, abelian $\ell$-towers of multigraphs were introduced which are analogous to $\Z_{\ell}$-extensions of number fields. It was shown that for towers of bouquets, the growth of the $\ell$-part of the number of spanning trees behaves in a predictable manner (analogous to a well-known theorem of Iwasawa for $\Z_{\ell}$-extensions of number fields). In this paper, we extend this result to abelian $\ell$-towers over an arbitrary connected multigraph (not necessarily simple and not necessarily regular). In order to carry this out, we employ integer-valued pol…
This appendix to the beautiful paper of Ihara puts it in the context of infinite global fields of our papers. We study the behaviour of Euler--Kronecker constant $γ\_{K}$ when the discriminant (respectively, the genus) tends to infinity. Results of our paper easily give us good lower bounds on the ratio ${γ\_{K}/\log\sqrt{| d\_{K}|}}$. In particular, for number fields, under the generalized Riemann hypothesis we prove $$\liminf{γ\_{K}\over\log\sqrt{| d\_{K}|}}\ge -0.26049...$$ Then we produce examples of class field towers, showing that $$\liminf{γ\_{K}\over\log\sqrt{| d\_{K}|}}\le -0.17849...…
We push further the classical proof of Weil upper bound for the number of rational points of an absolutely irreducible smooth projective curve $X$ over a finite field in term of euclidean relationships between the Neron Severi classes in $X\times X$ of the graphs of iterations of the Frobenius morphism. This allows us to recover Ihara's bound, which can be seen as a {\em second order} Weil upper bound, to establish a new {\em third order} Weil upper bound, and using {\tt magma} to produce numerical tables for {\em higher order} Weil upper bounds. We also give some interpretation for the defect…
The explicit construction of function fields tower with many rational points relative to the genus in the tower play a key role for the construction of asymptotically good algebraic-geometric codes. In 1997 Garcia, Stichtenoth and Thomas [6] exhibited two recursive asymptotically good Kummer towers over any non-prime field. Wulftange determined the limit of one tower in his PhD thesis [13]. In this paper we determine the limit of another tower [14].
Elaborating on ideas of Elkies, we show how recursive equations for towers of Drinfeld modular curves $(X_0(P^n))_{n\ge 0}$ for $P\in \mathbb F_q[T]$ can be read of directly from the modular polynomial $Φ_P(X,Y)$ and how this naturally leads to recursions of depth two. Although the modular polynomial $Φ_T(X,Y)$ is not known in general, using generators and relations given by Schweizer, we find unreduced recursive equations over $\mathbb F_q(T)$ for the tower $(X_0(T^n))_{n\ge 2}$ and of a small variation of it (its partial Galois closure). Reducing at various primes, one obtains towers over fi…
As a natural generalization of the Euler-Mascheroni constant $γ$, Y. Ihara introduced the Euler-Kronecker constant $γ_K$ attached to any number field $K$. In this paper, we prove that a certain bound on $γ_K$ in a tower of number fields $\mathcal{K}$ implies the generalized Brauer-Siegel conjecture for $\mathcal{K}$ as formulated by Tsfasman and Vlǎduţ. Moreover, we use known bounds on $γ_K$ for cyclotomic fields to obtain a finer estimate for the number of zeros of the Dedekind zeta-function $ζ_K(s)$ in the critical strip.
In this paper, we recursively construct explicit elements of provably high order in finite fields. We do this using the recursive formulas developed by Elkies to describe explicit modular towers. In particular, we give two explicit constructions based on two examples of his formulas and demonstrate that the resulting elements have high order. Between the two constructions, we are able to generate high order elements in every characteristic. Despite the use of the modular recursions of Elkies, our methods are quite elementary and require no knowledge of modular curves. We compare our results to…
Let $k$ be a field of characteristic $0$, and let $α_{1}$, $α_{2}$, and $α_{3}$ be algebraically independent and transcendental over $k$. Let $K$ be the transcendental extension of $k$ obtained by adjoining the elementary symmetric functions of the $α_{i}$'s. Let $E$ be the elliptic curve defined over $K$ which is given by the equation $y^{2} = (x - α_{1})(x - α_{2})(x - α_{3})$. We define a tower of field extensions $K = K_{0}' \subset K_{1}' \subset K_{2}' \subset ...$ by giving recursive formulas for the generators of each $K_{n}'$ over $K_{n - 1}'$. We show that $K_{\infty}'$ is a certain …
We introduce a framework generalizing lattice reduction algorithms to module lattices in order to practically and efficiently solve the $γ$-Hermite Module-SVP problem over arbitrary cyclotomic fields. The core idea is to exploit the structure of the subfields for designing a doubly-recursive strategy of reduction: both recursive in the rank of the module and in the field we are working in. Besides, we demonstrate how to leverage the inherent symplectic geometry existing in the tower of fields to provide a significant speed-up of the reduction for rank two modules. The recursive strategy over t…
Let $k$ be a field of characteristic $0$, and let $α_{1}$, $α_{2}$, ..., $α_{5}$ be algebraically independent and transcendental over $k$. Let $K$ be the transcendental extension of $k$ obtained by adjoining the elementary symmetric functions of the $α_{i}$'s. Let $J$ be the Jacobian of the hyperelliptic curve defined over $K$ which is given by the equation $y^{2} = \prod_{i = 1}^{5} (x - α_{i})$. We define a tower of field extensions $K = K_{0}' \subset K_{1}' \subset K_{2}' \subset ...$ by giving recursive formulas for the generators of each $K_{n}'$ over $K_{n - 1}'$, and let $K_{\infty}' =…
