We consider a tower of function fields F=(F_n)_{n\geq 0} over a finite field F_q and a finite extension E/F_0 such that the sequence \mathcal{E):=(EF_n)_{n\goq 0} is a tower over the field F_q. Then we deal with the following: What can we say about the invariants of \mathcal{E}; i.e., the asymptotic number of places of degree r for any r\geq 1 in \mathcal{E}, if those of F are known? We give a method based on explicit extensions for constructing towers of function fields over F_q with finitely many prescribed invariants being positive, and towers of function fields over F_q, for q a square, with at least one positive invariant and certain prescribed invariants being zero. We show the existence of recursive towers attaining the Drinfeld-Vladut bound of order r, for any r\geq 1 with q^r a square. Moreover, we give some examples of recursive towers with all but one invariants equal to zero.
We propose a systematic method to produce potentially good recursive towers over finite fields. The graph point of view, so as some magma and sage computations are used in this process. We also establish some theoretical functional criterion ensuring the existence of many rational points on a recursive tower. Both points are illustrated on an example, from the production process, to the theoretical study, using this functional criterion, of the parameters of the obtained potentially good tower.
We give a lower bound on multiplicative orders of some elements in defined by Conway towers of finite fields of characteristic two and also formulate a condition under that these elements are primitive
We prove the existence of a Galois closure for towers of torsors under finite group schemes over a proper, geometrically connected and geometrically reduced algebraic stack $X$ over a field $k$. This is done by describing the Nori fundamental gerbe of an essentially finite cover of $X$. A similar result is also obtained for the $S$-fundamental gerbe.
For a family of K3 surfaces we implement a variation of a general construction of towers of algebraic curves over finite fields given in a previous paper. As a result we get a good tower over $k=\mathbb{F}_{p^2}$, that is optimal if $p=3$.
Since Serre gave his famous Harvard lectures in 1985 on various aspects of the theory of algebraic curves defined over a finite field, there have been many developments. In this survey article, an overview will be given on the developments concerning the quantity $A(q)$, known as Ihara's constant. The main focus will be on explicit techniques and in particular recursively defined towers of function fields over a finite field, which have given good lower bounds for Ihara's constant in the past.
For a finite abelian p-group A of rank d, we define its (logarithmic) mean exponent to be the base-p logarithm of the d-th root of its cardinality. We study the behavior of the mean exponent of p-class groups in towers of number fields. By combining techniques from group theory with the Tsfasman-Valdut generalization of the Brauer-Siegel Theorem, we construct infinite tamely ramified towers in which the mean exponent of class groups remains bounded. Several explicit examples with p=2 are given. We introduce an invariant M(G) attached to a finitely generated FAb pro-p group G which measures the…
Let $X$ be a projective, connected and smooth scheme defined over an algebraically closed field $k$. In this paper we prove that a tower of finite torsors (i.e., under the action of finite $k$-group schemes) can be dominated by a single finite torsor. Let $G$ be any finite $k$-group scheme and $Y$ any $G$--torsor over $X$ pointed in $y\,\in\, Y(k)$; we define over $Y$, which may not be reduced, in a very natural way the categories of Nori-semistable and essentially finite vector bundles. These categories are proved to be Tannakian. Their Galois $k$-group schemes $π^S(Y,\,y)$ and $π^N(Y,\,y)$, …
Let $p$ be an odd prime, $F$ be a number field and consider a uniform infinite pro-$p$ extension $F_\infty$ of $F$ with Galois group $G=Gal(F_\infty/F)$. Let \[G=G_0\supset G_1\supset\dots \supset G_n\supset G_{n+1}\supset \dots\] be the descending $p$ central series of $G$ and set $F_n:=F_\infty^{G_n}$. Assume that $G$ is uniform and that $F_\infty$ contains the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of $F$. Denote by $A_n$ the $p$-primary part of the class group of the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of $F_n$. The $λ$-invariant of $F_n$ coincides with the corank of $A_n$ as a $\mathbb{Z}_p$…
Some of the algorithms for solving the Tower of Hanoi puzzle can be applied "with eyes closed" or "without memory". Here we survey the solution for the classical Tower of Hanoi that uses finite automata, as well as some variations on the original puzzle. In passing, we obtain a new result on morphisms generating the classical and the lazy Tower of Hanoi.
We revisit the theory of Ihara $L$-functions in the context initially studied by Bass and Hashimoto and more recently by Zakharov. In particular, we study if the Artin formalism is satisfied by these $L$-functions. As an application, we give a proof of the analogue of Iwasawa's asymptotic class number formula for the $p$-part of the number of spanning trees in branched $\mathbb{Z}_{p}$-towers of finite connected graphs using Ihara zeta and $L$-functions. Moreover, we relate a generator for the characteristic ideal of the finitely generated torsion Iwasawa module that governs the growth of the …
To extend Iwasawa's classical theorem from ${\mathbb Z}_p$-towers to ${\mathbb Z}_p^d$-towers, Greenberg conjectured that the exponent of $p$ in the $n$-th class number in a ${\mathbb Z}_p^d$-tower of a global field $K$ ramified at finitely many primes is given by a polynomial in $p^n$ and $n$ of total degree at most $d$ for sufficiently large $n$. This conjecture remains open for $d\geq 2$. In this paper, we prove that this conjecture is true in the function field case. Further, we propose a series of general conjectures on $p$-adic stability of zeta functions in a $p$-adic Lie tower of funct…

For $Γ=\mathbb{Z}_p$, Iwasawa was the first to construct $Γ$-extensions over number fields with arbitrarily large $μ$-invariants. In this work, we investigate other uniform pro-$p$ groups which are realizable as Galois groups of towers of number fields with arbitrarily large $μ$-invariant. For instance, we prove that this is the case if $p$ is a regular prime and $Γ$ is a uniform pro-$p$ group admitting a fixed-point-free automorphism of odd order dividing $p-1$. Both in Iwasawa's work, and in the present one, the size of the $μ$-invariant appears to be intimately related to the existence of p…
Given a fixed prime number \(p\), the multiplet of abelian type invariants of the \(p\)-class groups of all unramified cyclic degree \(p\) extensions of a number field \(K\) is called its IPAD (index-\(p\) abelianization data). These invariants have proved to be a valuable information for determining the Galois group \(G_p^2\) of the second Hilbert \(p\)-class field and the \(p\)-capitulation type \(\varkappa\) of \(K\). For \(p=3\) and a number field \(K\) with elementary \(p\)-class group of rank two, all possible IPADs are given in the complete form of several infinite sequences. Iterated I…
The p-class tower $F_p^\infty(k)$ of a number field k is its maximal unramified pro-p extension. It is considered to be known when the p-tower group, that is the Galois group $G:=Gal(F_p^\infty(k)/k)$, can be identified by an explicit presentation. The main intention of this article is to characterize assigned finite 3-groups uniquely by abelian quotient invariants of subgroups of finite index, and to provide evidence of actual realizations of these groups by 3-tower groups G of real quadratic fields $K=Q(\sqrt{d})$ with 3-capitulation type (0122) or (2034).
We fix a monic polynomial $f(x) \in \mathbb F_q[x]$ over a finite field and consider the Artin-Schreier-Witt tower defined by $f(x)$; this is a tower of curves $\cdots \to C_m \to C_{m-1} \to \cdots \to C_0 =\mathbb A^1$, with total Galois group $\mathbb Z_p$. We study the Newton slopes of zeta functions of this tower of curves. This reduces to the study of the Newton slopes of L-functions associated to characters of the Galois group of this tower. We prove that, when the conductor of the character is large enough, the Newton slopes of the L-function form arithmetic progressions which are inde…
The seminal papers in the field of root-discriminant bounds are those of Odlyzko and Martinet. Both papers include the question of whether the field $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-5460})$ has finite or infinite $2$-class tower. This is a critical case that will either substantially lower the best known upper bound for lim inf of root-discriminants (if infinite) or else give a counter-example to what is often termed Martinet's conjecture or question (if finite). Using extensive computation and introducing some new techniques, we give strong evidence that the tower is in fact finite, establishing other prop…
We study a tower of function fields of Artin-Schreier type over a finite field with $2^s$ elements. The study of the asymptotic behavior of this tower was left as an open problem by Beelen, García and Stichtenoth in $2006$. We prove that this tower is asymptotically good for $s$ even and asymptotically bad for $s$ odd.
In these notes, we explore possible stable properties for the zeta function of a geometric Zp-tower of curves over a finite field of characteristic p, in the spirit of Iwasawa theory. A number of fundamental questions and conjectures are proposed for those Zp towers coming from algebraic geometry.
The isomorphism type of the Galois group of the 2-class field tower of quadratic number fields having a 2-class group with abelian type invariants (4,4) is determined by means of information on the transfer of 2-classes to unramified abelian 2-extensions, collected in the Artin pattern. In recent investigations by Benjamin and Snyder, the length of the tower of such fields has turned out to be dependent on the rank of the 2-class group of the first Hilbert 2-class field. Significant progress is achieved by extending the pool of possible metabelian 2-groups of the second Hilbert 2-class field f…
Recent examples of periodic bifurcations in descendant trees of finite p-groups with p in {2,3} are used to show that the possible p-class tower groups G of certain multiquadratic fields K with p-class group of type (2,2,2), resp. (3,3), form periodic sequences in the descendant tree of the elementary abelian root C(2)xC(2)xC(2), resp. C(3)xC(3). The particular vertex of the periodic sequence which occurs as the p-class tower group G of an assigned field K is determined uniquely by the p-class number of a quadratic, resp. cubic, auxiliary field k, associated unambiguously to K. Consequently, t…
We fix a monic polynomial $\bar f(x) \in \mathbb{F}_q[x]$ over a finite field of characteristic $p$, and consider the $\mathbb{Z}_{p^{\ell}}$-Artin-Schreier-Witt tower defined by $\bar f(x)$; this is a tower of curves $\cdots \to C_m \to C_{m-1} \to \cdots \to C_0 =\mathbb{A}^1$, whose Galois group is canonically isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z}_{p^\ell}$, the degree $\ell$ unramified extension of $\mathbb{Z}_p$, which is abstractly isomorphic to $(\mathbb{Z}_p)^\ell$ as a topological group. We study the Newton slopes of zeta functions of this tower of curves. This reduces to the study of the Newton …
We fix a monic polynomial $f(x) \in \mathbb F_q[x]$ over a finite field of characteristic $p$ of degree relatively prime to $p$. Let $a\mapsto ω(a)$ be the Teichmüller lift of $\mathbb F_q$, and let $χ:\mathbb{Z}\to \mathbb C_p^\times$ be a finite character of $\mathbb Z_p$. The $L$-function associated to the polynomial $f$ and the so-called twisted character $ω^u\times χ$ is denoted by $L_f(ω^u,χ,s)$. We prove that, when the conductor of the character is large enough, the $p$-adic Newton slopes of this $L$-function form arithmetic progressions.
By the construction of suitable non-metabelian Schur sigma-groups S of type (9,3) with log order lo(S) = 21 and nilpotency class cl(S) = 9, evidence is provided of a new class of imaginary quadratic fields K with 3-class group Cl(3,K) ~ C(9) * C(3) and punctured principalization type kappa ~ (1,4,4;4) whose 3-class field tower consists of precisely three stages. In contrast, previous examples of three-stage towers were associated with kappa in { (1,1,2;2), (1,1,2;3), (1,1,4;2), (1,2,3;1) }, lo(S) = 9 and cl(S) = 5.
We introduce in this article a new method to estimate the minimum distance of codes from algebraic surfaces. This lower bound is generic, i.e. can be applied to any surface, and turns out to be ``liftable'' under finite morphisms, paving the way toward the construction of good codes from towers of surfaces. In the same direction, we establish a criterion for a surface with a fixed finite set of closed points $\mathcal P$ to have an infinite tower of $\ell$--étale covers in which $\mathcal P$ splits totally. We conclude by stating several open problems. In particular, we relate the existence of…
For each odd prime p>=5, there exist finite p-groups G with derived quotient G/D(G)=C(p)xC(p) and nearly constant transfer kernel type k(G)=(1,2,...,2) having two fixed points. It is proved that, for p=7, this type k(G) with the simplest possible case of logarithmic abelian quotient invariants t(G)=(11111,111,21,21,21,21,21,21) of the eight maximal subgroups is realized by exactly 98 non-metabelian Schur sigma-groups S of order 7^11 with fixed derived length dl(S)=3 and metabelianizations S/D(D(S)) of order 7^7. For p=5, the type k(G) with t(G)=(2111,111,21,21,21,21) leads to infinitely many n…
In this article we study the behavior of Newton polygons along $\mathbb{Z}_p$-towers of curves. Fix an ordinary curve $X$ over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ of characteristic $p$. By a $\mathbb{Z}_p$-tower $X_\infty/X$ we mean a tower of covers $ \dots \to X_2 \to X_1 \to X$ with $\mathrm{Gal}(X_n/X) \cong \mathbb{Z}/p^n\mathbb{Z}$. We show that if the ramification along the tower is sufficiently moderate, then the slopes of the Newton polygon of $X_n$ are equidistributed in the interval $[0,1]$ as $n$ tends to $\infty$. Under a stronger congruence assumption on the ramification invariants, we…
