In this work, we use the notion of ``symmetry'' of functions for an extension $K/L$ of finite fields to produce extensions of a function field $F/K$ in which almost all places of degree one split completely. Then we introduce the notion of ``quasi-symmetry'' of functions for $K/L$, and demonstrate its use in producing extensions of $F/K$ in which all places of degree one split completely. Using these techniques, we are able to restrict the ramification either to one chosen rational place, or entirely to non-rational places. We then apply these methods to the related problem of building asymptotically good towers of function fields. We construct examples of towers of function fields in which all rational places split completely throughout the tower. We construct Abelian towers with this property also.
Furthermore, all of the above are done explicitly, ie., we give generators for the extensions, and equations that they satisfy.
We also construct an integral basis for a set of places in a tower of function fields meeting the Drinfeld-Vladut bound using the discriminant of the tower localized at each place. Thus we are able to obtain a basis for a collection of functions that contains the set of regular functions in this tower. Regular functions are of interest in the theory of error-correcting codes as they lead to an explicit description of the code associated to the tower by providing the code's generator matrix.
For a family of K3 surfaces we implement a variation of a general construction of towers of algebraic curves over finite fields given in a previous paper. As a result we get a good tower over $k=\mathbb{F}_{p^2}$, that is optimal if $p=3$.
We find the limiting proportion of periodic points in towers of finite fields for polynomial maps associated to algebraic groups, namely pure power maps z^d and Chebyshev polynomials.
For applications in algebraic geometric codes, an explicit description of bases of Riemann-Roch spaces of divisors on function fields over finite fields is needed. We give an algorithm to compute such bases for one point divisors, and Weierstrass semigroups over an optimal tower of function fields. We also explicitly compute Weierstrass semigroups till level eight.
For applications in algebraic geometric codes, an explicit description of bases of Riemann-Roch spaces of divisors on function fields over finite fields is needed. We investigate the third function field $ F^{(3)} $ in a tower of Artin-Schreier extensions described by Garcia and Stichtenoth reaching the Drinfeld-Vl{ă}du{ţ} bound. We construct bases for the related Riemann-Roch spaces on $ F^{(3)} $ and present some basic properties of divisors on a line. From the bases, we explicitly calculate the Weierstrass semigroups and pure gaps at several places on $ F^{(3)} $. All of these results can b…
The explicit construction of function fields tower with many rational points relative to the genus in the tower play a key role for the construction of asymptotically good algebraic-geometric codes. In 1997 Garcia, Stichtenoth and Thomas [6] exhibited two recursive asymptotically good Kummer towers over any non-prime field. Wulftange determined the limit of one tower in his PhD thesis [13]. In this paper we determine the limit of another tower [14].
This paper concerns towers of curves over a finite field with many rational points, following Garcia--Stichtenoth and Elkies. We present a new method to produce such towers. A key ingredient is the study of algebraic solutions to Fuchsian differential equations modulo $p$. We apply our results to towers of modular curves, and find new asymptotically good towers.
In these notes, we explore possible stable properties for the zeta function of a geometric Zp-tower of curves over a finite field of characteristic p, in the spirit of Iwasawa theory. A number of fundamental questions and conjectures are proposed for those Zp towers coming from algebraic geometry.
Let us consider an algebraic function field defined over a finite Galois extension $K$ of a perfect field $k$. We give some conditions allowing the descent of the definition field of the algebraic function field from $K$ to $k$. We apply these results to the descent of the definition field of a tower of function fields. We give explicitly the equations of the intermediate steps of an Artin-Schreier type extension reduced from $\F_{q^2}$ to $\F_q$. By applying these results to a completed Garcia-Stichtenoth's tower we improve the upper bounds and the upper asymptotic bounds of the bilinear compl…
We introduce in this section an Algebraic and Combinatorial approach to the theory of Numbers. The approach rests on the observation that numbers can be identified with familiar combinatorial objects namely rooted trees, which we shall here refer to as towers. The bijection between numbers and towers provides some insights into unexpected connexions between Number theory, combinatorics and discrete probability theory.
We study a natural question in the Iwasawa theory of algebraic curves of genus $>1$. Fix a prime number $p$. Let $X$ be a smooth, projective, geometrically irreducible curve defined over a number field $K$ of genus $g>1$, such that the Jacobian of $X$ has good ordinary reduction at the primes above $p$. Fix an odd prime $p$ and for any integer $n>1$, let $K_n^{(p)}$ denote the degree-$p^n$ extension of $K$ contained in $K(μ_{p^{\infty}})$. We prove explicit results for the growth of $\#X(K_n^{(p)})$ as $n\rightarrow \infty$. When the Jacobian of $X$ has rank zero and the associated adelic Galo…
We give a new construction of algebraic codes which are efficiently list decodable from a fraction $1-R-\eps$ of adversarial errors where $R$ is the rate of the code, for any desired positive constant $\eps$. The worst-case list size output by the algorithm is $O(1/\eps)$, matching the existential bound for random codes up to constant factors. Further, the alphabet size of the codes is a constant depending only on $\eps$ - it can be made $\exp(\tilde{O}(1/\eps^2))$ which is not much worse than the lower bound of $\exp(Ω(1/\eps))$. The parameters we achieve are thus quite close to the existenti…
We introduce in this article a new method to estimate the minimum distance of codes from algebraic surfaces. This lower bound is generic, i.e. can be applied to any surface, and turns out to be ``liftable'' under finite morphisms, paving the way toward the construction of good codes from towers of surfaces. In the same direction, we establish a criterion for a surface with a fixed finite set of closed points $\mathcal P$ to have an infinite tower of $\ell$--étale covers in which $\mathcal P$ splits totally. We conclude by stating several open problems. In particular, we relate the existence of…
Let $k$ denote an algebraically closed field. We revisit a construction of the author of families of elliptic curves over the rational function field $k(t)$. Combining a combinatorial analysis with a rank formula of Ulmer we prove that, for all but finitely many families of these curves, the Mordell-Weil groups over $k(t^{1/d})$ have rank zero, as $d$ ranges over positive integers prime to the characteristic of $k$.
In this article we investigate the automorphism group of an asymptotically optimal tower of function fields introduced by Garcia and Stichtenoth. In particular we provide a detailed description of the decomposition group of some rational places. This group acts on the algebraic-geometric standard codes obtained by the Garcia-Stichtenoth tower exceeding the Gilbert-Varshamov bound. The fields fixed by the decomposition groups form an asymptotically optimal non-Galois subtower, which has been first found by Bezerra and Garcia and yields an improvement for computing codes above the Gilbert-Varsha…
Since Serre gave his famous Harvard lectures in 1985 on various aspects of the theory of algebraic curves defined over a finite field, there have been many developments. In this survey article, an overview will be given on the developments concerning the quantity $A(q)$, known as Ihara's constant. The main focus will be on explicit techniques and in particular recursively defined towers of function fields over a finite field, which have given good lower bounds for Ihara's constant in the past.
We construct explicit algebraic geometry codes built from the Garcia-Stichtenoth function field tower beating the Gilbert-Varshamov bound for alphabet sizes at least 192. Messages are identied with functions in certain Riemann-Roch spaces associated with divisors supported on multiple places. Encoding amounts to evaluating these functions at degree one places. By exploiting algebraic structures particular to the Garcia-Stichtenoth tower, we devise an intricate deterministic ω/2 < 1.19 runtime exponent encoding and 1+ω/2 < 2.19 expected runtime exponent randomized (unique and list) decoding alg…
We study the asymptotic behavior of a family of algebraic geometry codes which are 4-quasi transitive linear codes. We prove that this family is asymptotically good over many prime fields using towers of algebraic function fields.
The fundamental theorem of arithmetic factorizes any integer into a product of prime numbers. The Jordan-Holder theorem dissolves many groups by their normal series which can be refined into composition series. The main topic of this thesis is the dissociation of field extensions. We dissociate algebraic extensions by their intermediate fields to build a tower with the greatest possible number of Galois steps. We call "galtowerable" the extensions admitting a field tower all the steps of which are Galois extensions,i.e. a "Galois tower". Two Galois towers of the same galtowerable extension (fi…
A code over a finite alphabet is called locally recoverable (LRC code) if every symbol in the encoding is a function of a small number (at most r) other symbols. A family of linear LRC codes that generalize the classic construction of Reed-Solomon codes was constructed in a recent paper by I. Tamo and A. Barg. In this paper we extend this construction to codes on algebraic curves. We give a general construction of LRC codes on curves and compute some examples, including asymptotically good families of codes derived from the Garcia- Stichtenoth towers. The local recovery procedure is performed …
With K=Q((3812377)^(1/2)) we give the first example of an algebraic number field possessing a 5-class tower of exact length L(5,K)=3. The rigorous proof is conducted by means of the p-group generation algorithm, showing the existence of a unique finite metabelian 5-group G with abelianization [5,5] having the kernels (M(1),G^5) and targets ([25,5,5,5],[5,5]^5) of Artin transfers T(i):G-->M(i)/M(i)' to its six maximal subgroups M(i), prescribed by arithmetical invariants of K. Thus, G must be the second 5-class group G(5,2,K) of the real quadratic field K but cannot be its 5-class tower group G…
We study the asymptotic behavior of a family of algebraic geometry codes, which we call block-transitive, that generalizes the classes of transitive and quasi-transitive codes. We prove, by using towers of algebraic function fields, that there are sequences of codes in this family attaining the Tsfasman-Vladut-Zink bound over finite fields of square cardinality. We give the exact length of these codes as well as explicit lower bounds for their parameters.
Let $X$ be a projective, connected and smooth scheme defined over an algebraically closed field $k$. In this paper we prove that a tower of finite torsors (i.e., under the action of finite $k$-group schemes) can be dominated by a single finite torsor. Let $G$ be any finite $k$-group scheme and $Y$ any $G$--torsor over $X$ pointed in $y\,\in\, Y(k)$; we define over $Y$, which may not be reduced, in a very natural way the categories of Nori-semistable and essentially finite vector bundles. These categories are proved to be Tannakian. Their Galois $k$-group schemes $π^S(Y,\,y)$ and $π^N(Y,\,y)$, …
Recent results of Cascudo, Cramer, and Xing on the construction of arithmetic secret sharing schemes are improved by using some new bounds on the torsion limits of algebraic function fields. Furthermore, new bounds on the torsion limits of certain towers of function fields are given.
We study and explicitly construct some families of asymptotically exact sequences of algebraic function fields. It turns out that these families have an asymptotical class number widely greater than the general Lachaud - Martin-Deschamps bounds. We emphasize that we obtain asymptotically exact sequences of algebraic function fields over any finite field $\F_q$, in particular when $q$ is not a square and that these sequences are dense towers.
An expression in terms of (cyclotomic) harmonic sums can be simplified by the quasi-shuffle algebra in terms of the so-called basis sums. By construction, these sums are algebraically independent within the quasi-shuffle algebra. In this article we show that the basis sums can be represented within a tower of difference ring extensions where the constants remain unchanged. This property enables one to embed this difference ring for the (cyclotomic) harmonic sums into the ring of sequences. This construction implies that the sequences produced by the basis sums are algebraically independent ove…
The paper has two purposes. First, we start to develop a theory of infinite global fields, i.e., of infinite algebraic extensions either of ${\mathbb{Q}}$ or of ${\mathbb{F}}_r(t)$. We produce a series of invariants of such fields, and we introduce and study a kind of zeta-function for them. Second, for sequences of number fields with growing discriminant we prove generalizations of the Odlyzko--Serre bounds and of the Brauer--Siegel theorem, taking into account non-archimedean places. This leads to asymptotic bounds on the ratio ${{\log hR}/\log\sqrt{| D|}}$ valid without the standard assumpt…
We introduce a framework generalizing lattice reduction algorithms to module lattices in order to practically and efficiently solve the $γ$-Hermite Module-SVP problem over arbitrary cyclotomic fields. The core idea is to exploit the structure of the subfields for designing a doubly-recursive strategy of reduction: both recursive in the rank of the module and in the field we are working in. Besides, we demonstrate how to leverage the inherent symplectic geometry existing in the tower of fields to provide a significant speed-up of the reduction for rank two modules. The recursive strategy over t…
