In this paper we prove that the centered three-dimensional Wiener sausage can be strongly approximated by a one-dimensional Brownian motion running at a suitable time clock. The strong approximation gives all possible laws of iterated logarithm as well as the convergence in law in terms of process for the normalized Wiener sausage. The proof relies on Le Gall's estimates between the Wiener sausage and the Brownian intersection local times.
We consider the Wiener sausage for a Brownian motion up to time $t$ associated with a closed ball in even dimensional cases. We obtain the asymptotic expansion of the expected volume of the Wiener sausage for large $t$. The result says that the expansion has many $\log$ terms, which do not appear in odd dimensional cases.
We consider the Wiener sausage for a Brownian motion with a constant drift up to time $t$ associated with a closed ball. In the two or more dimensional cases, we obtain the explicit form of the expected volume of the Wiener sausage. The result says that it can be represented by the sum of the mean volumes of the multi-dimensional Wiener sausages without a drift. In addition, we show that the leading term of the expected volume of the Wiener sausage is written as $κt(1+o[1])$ for large $t$ and an explicit form gives the constant $κ$. The expression is of a complicated form, but it converges to …
The expected areas of the Wiener sausages swept by a disc attached to the two-dimensional Brownian Bridge joining the origin to a point x over a time interval [0,t] are computed. It is proved that the leading term of the expectation is given by Ramanujan's function if (x,t) remains in a parabolic region. The corresponding result for unconditioned process is also obtained.
In the present paper, we consider long time behaviors of the volume of the Wiener sausage on Dirichlet spaces. We focus on the volume of the Wiener sausage for diffusion processes on metric measure spaces other than the Euclid space equipped with the Lebesgue measure. We obtain the growth rate of the expectations and almost sure behaviors of the volumes of the Wiener sausages on metric measure Dirichlet spaces satisfying Ahlfors regularity and sub-Gaussian heat kernel estimates. We show that the growth rate of the expectations on a "bounded" modification of the Euclidian space is identical wit…
Let R_n be the radius of the largest disk covered after n steps of a simple random walk. We prove that almost surely limsup_{n \to \infty}(log R_n)^2/(log n log_3 n) = 1/4, where log_3 denotes 3 iterations of the log function. This is motivated by a question of Erdős and Taylor. We also obtain the analogous result for the Wiener sausage, refining a result of Meyre and Werner.
A parallel neighborhood of a path of a Brownian motion is sometimes called the Wiener sausage. We consider almost sure approximations of this random set by a sequence of random polyconvex sets and show that the convergence of the corresponding mean curvature measures holds under certain conditions in two and three dimensions. Based on these convergence results, the mean curvature measures of the Wiener sausage are calculated numerically by Monte Carlo simulations in two dimensions. The corresponding approximation formulae are given.
We derive formulae for some ratios of the Macdonald functions, which are simpler and easier to treat than known formulae. The result gives two applications in probability theory. One is the formula for the L{é}vy measure of the distribution of the first hitting time of a Bessel process and the other is an explicit form for the expected volume of the Wiener sausage for an even dimensional Brownian motion. Moreover, the result enables us to write down the algebraic equations whose roots are the zeros of Macdonald functions.
We consider the statistical mechanics of a random polymer with random walks and disorders in $\mathbb{Z}^d$. The walk collects random disorders along the way and gets nothing if it visits the same site twice. In the continuum and weak disorder regime, the partition function as a random variable converges weakly to a Wiener Chaos expansion when the dimension is lower than the critical dimension, which is four. A finite temperature case in one dimension is also discussed. The last case suggests that the end-point behavior of the polymer is $t^{2/3}$.
The space-time distribution, $Q_A(x,dt dξ)$ say, of Brownian hitting of a bounded Borel set $A$ of the $d$-dimensional Euclidian space is studied. We derive the asymptotic form of the leading term of the time-derivative $Q_A(x, dtdξ)/dt$ for each $d =2, 3, ...$, valid uniformly with respect to the starting point $x$ of the Brownian motion, which result extends significantly the classical results for $Q_A(x, dt dξ)$ itself by Hunt ($d=2$), Joffe and Spitzer ($d= 3, 4,...$). The results are applied to find the asymptotic form of the expected volume of Wiener sausage for the Brownian bridge joini…
In the context of a heat kernel diffusion which admits a Gaussian type estimate with parameter beta on a local Dirichlet space, we consider the log asymptotic behavior of the negative exponential moments of the Wiener sausage. We show that the log asymptotic behavior up to time t^{beta}V(x,t) is V(x,t), which is analogous to the Euclidean result. Here V(x,t) represents the mass of the ball of radius t about a point x of the local Dirichlet space. The proof uses a known coarse graining technique to obtain the upper asymptotic, but must be adapted to for use without translation invariance in thi…
We consider a continuum percolation model on $\R^d$, where $d\geq 4$.The occupied set is given by the union of independent Wiener sausages with radius $r$ running up to time $t$ and whoseinitial points are distributed according to a homogeneous Poisson point process. It was established in a previous work by Erhard, Martínez and Poisat~\cite{EMP13} that (1) if $r$ is small enough there is a non-trivial percolation transitionin $t$ occuring at a critical time $t\_c(r)$ and (2) in the supercritical regime the unbounded cluster is unique. In this paper we investigate the asymptotic behaviour of the…
The branching Brownian sausage in $\mathbb{R}^d$ was defined by Engländer in [Stoch. Proc. Appl. 88 (2000)] similarly to the classical Wiener sausage, as the random subset of $\mathbb{R}^d$ scooped out by moving balls of fixed radius with centers following the trajectories of the particles of a branching Brownian motion (BBM). We consider a $d$-dimensional dyadic BBM, and study the large-time asymptotic behavior of the volume of the associated exponentially shrinking branching Brownian sausage (BBM-sausage). Using a previous result on the density of the support of BBM, and some well-known resu…
Let $(ξ(s))_{s\geq 0}$ be a standard Brownian motion in $d\geq 1$ dimensions and let $(D_s)_{s \geq 0}$ be a collection of open sets in $\R^d$. For each $s$, let $B_s$ be a ball centered at 0 with $\vol(B_s) = \vol(D_s)$. We show that $\E[\vol(\cup_{s \leq t}(ξ(s) + D_s))] \geq \E[\vol(\cup_{s \leq t}(ξ(s) + B_s))]$, for all $t$. In particular, this implies that the expected volume of the Wiener sausage increases when a drift is added to the Brownian motion.
We study two objects concerning the Wiener sausage among Poissonian obstacles. The first is the asymptotics for the \textit{replica overlap}, which is the intersection of two independent Wiener sausages. We show that it is asymptotically equal to their union. This result confirms that the localizing effect of the media is so strong as to completely determine the motional range of particles. The second is an estimate on the \textit{covering time}. It is known that the Wiener sausage avoiding Poissonian obstacles up to time $t$ is confined in some `clearing' ball near the origin and almost fills…
We consider the Wiener sausage among Poissonian obstacles. The obstacle is called hard if Brownian motion entering the obstacle is immediately killed, and is called soft if it is killed at certain rate. It is known that Brownian motion conditioned to survive among obstacles is confined in a ball near its starting point. We show the weak law of large numbers, large deviation principle in special cases and the moment asymptotics for the volume of the corresponding Wiener sausage. One of the consequence of our results is that the trajectory of Brownian motion almost fills the confinement ball.
We consider a Hamiltonian involving the range of the simple random walk and the Wiener sausage so that the walk tends to stretch itself. This Hamiltonian can be easily extended to the multidimensional cases, since the Wiener sausage is well-defined in any dimension. In dimension one, we give a formula for the speed and the spread of the endpoint of the polymer path. It can be easily showed that if the self-repelling strength is stronger, the end point is going away faster. This strict monotonicity of speed has not been proven in the literature for the one-dimensional case.
For a>0,let W^a(t) be the a-neighbourhood of standard Brownian motion in R^d starting at 0 and observed until time t.It is well-known that E|W^a(t)|~kappa_a t (t->infty) for d >= 3,with kappa_a the Newtonian capacity of the ball with radius a. We prove that lim_{t->infty} 1/t^{(d-2)/d}log P(|W^a(t)|<=bt) = -I^{kappa_a}(b) in (-infty,0) for all 0<b<kappa_a and derive a variational representation for the rate function I^{kappa_a}.We show that the optimal strategy to realise the above moderate deviation is for W^a(t) to look like a Swiss cheese: W^a(t) has random holes whose sizes are of order 1 …
The problem of approximating/tracking the value of a Wiener process is considered. The discretization points are placed at times when the value of the process differs from the approximation by some amount, here denoted by eta. It is found that the limiting difference, as eta goes to 0, between the approximation and the value of the process normalized with eta converges in distribution to a triangularly distributed random variable.
In [NP09a], Nourdin and Peccati established a neat characterization of Gamma approximation on a fixed Wiener chaos in terms of convergence of only the third and fourth cumulants. In this paper, we investigate the rate of convergence in Gamma approximation on Wiener chaos in terms of the iterated Gamma operators of Malliavin Calculus. On the second Wiener chaos, our upper bound can be further extended to an exact rate of convergence in a suitable probability metric $d_2$ in terms of the maximum of the third and fourth cumulants, analogous to that of normal approximation in [NP15] under one extr…
We combine Malliavin calculus with Stein's method to derive bounds for the Variance-Gamma approximation of functionals of isonormal Gaussian processes, in particular of random variables living inside a fixed Wiener chaos induced by such a process. The bounds are presented in terms of Malliavin operators and norms of contractions. We show that a sequence of distributions of random variables in the second Wiener chaos converges to a Variance-Gamma distribution if and only if their moments of order two to six converge to that of a Variance-Gamma distributed random variable (six moment theorem). M…
The proofs of Theorem 3.1 and Corollary 4.1 in Leão and Ohashi (2013) are incomplete. The reason is a wrong statement in Remark 2.2. The hypotheses and statements of Theorem 3.1 and Corollary 4.1 in Leão and Ohashi (2013) remain unchanged but the proofs have to be modified. In this short note, we provide the details.
In this paper we introduce a simple space-filtration discretization scheme on Wiener space which allows us to study weak decompositions and smooth explicit approximations for a large class of Wiener functionals. We show that any Wiener functional has an underlying robust semimartingale skeleton which under mild conditions converges to it. The discretization is given in terms of discrete-jumping filtrations which allow us to approximate nonsmooth processes by means of a stochastic derivative operator on the Wiener space. As a by-product, we provide a robust semimartingale approximation for weak…
In \cite{n-p-noncentral}, Nourdin and Peccati established a neat characterization of Gamma approximation on a fixed Wiener chaos in terms of convergence of only the third and fourth cumulants. In this paper, we provide an optimal rate of convergence in the $d_2$-distance in terms of the maximum of the third and fourth cumulants analogous to the result for normal approximation in \cite{n-p-optimal}. In order to achieve our goal, we introduce a novel operator theory approach to Stein's method. The recent development in Stein's method for the Gamma distribution of Döbler and Peccati (\cite{d-p}) …
Path integrals developed by Richard Feynman have been an important tool in Physics in studying quantum field theory. In mathematics, it has also been widely used in providing formal proofs in the study of Index theorem and asymptotic behaviors of heat kernels. Finite dimensional approximations to path integral representations give a way to interpret path integrals and make the formal argument rigorous. The central idea is to restrict a path integral to smaller path spaces where everything is well defined and then to interpret the original path integral as a "limit" when smaller path spaces "ex…
We introduce the model of two-dimensional continuous random interlacements, which is constructed using the Brownian trajectories conditioned on not hitting a fixed set (usually, a disk). This model yields the local picture of Wiener sausage on the torus around a late point. As such, it can be seen as a continuous analogue of discrete two-dimensional random interlacements [Comets, Popov, Vachkovskaia, 2016]. At the same time, one can view it as (restricted) Brownian loops through infinity. We establish a number of results analogous to these of [Comets, Popov, Vachkovskaia, 2016; Comets, Popov, …
We derive the Lévy-Khintchine representation of the Wiener-Hopf factors for the Normal Inverse Gaussian (NIG) process as well as a representation which is similar to the moment generating function (MGF) of a generalized gamma convolution (GGC). We show, via this representation, that for some parameters the Wiener-Hopf factors are, in fact, the MGFs of GGCs. Further, we develop two seperate methods of approximating the Wiener-Hopf factors, both based on Padé approximations of their Taylor series expansions; we show how the latter may be calculated exactly to any order. The first approximation y…
In prior work \cite{AD} of Lars Andersson and Bruce K. Driver, the path space with finite interval over a compact Riemannian manifold is approximated by finite dimensional manifolds $H_{x,¶} (M)$ consisting of piecewise geodesic paths adapted to partitions $¶$ of $[0,T]$, and the associated Wiener measure is also approximated by a sequence of probability measures on finite dimensional manifolds. In this article, we will extend their results to the general path space(possibly with infinite interval) over a non-compact Riemannian manifold by using the cutoff method of compact Riemannian manifold…
In this paper, we consider a target random variable $Y \sim \CVG$ distributed according to a centered Variance--Gamma distribution. For a generic random element $F=I_2(f)$ in the second Wiener chaos with $\E[F^2]= \E[Y^2]$ we establish a non-asymptotic optimal bound on the distance between $F$ and $Y$ in terms of the maximum of difference of the first six cumulants. This six moment theorem extends the celebrated optimal fourth moment theorem of I.\ Nourdin \& G.\ Peccati for normal approximation. The main body of our analysis constitutes a splitting technique for test functions in the Banach s…
We prove a Large Deviations Principle for the number of intersections of two independent infinite-time ranges in dimension five and more, improving upon the moment bounds of Khanin, Mazel, Shlosman and Sina{ï} [KMSS94]. This settles, in the discrete setting, a conjecture of van den Berg, Bolthausen and den Hollander [BBH04], who analyzed this question for the Wiener sausage in finite-time horizon. The proof builds on their result (which was resumed in the discrete setting by Phetpradap [Phet12]), and combines it with a series of tools that were developed in recent works of the authors [AS17, A…
We establish explicit bounds on the convex distance between the distribution of a vector of smooth functionals of a Gaussian field, and that of a normal vector with a positive definite covariance matrix. Our bounds are commensurate to the ones obtained by Nourdin, Peccati and Réveillac (2010) for the (smoother) 1-Wasserstein distance, and do not involve any additional logarithmic factor. One of the main tools exploited in our work is a recursive estimate on the convex distance recently obtained by Schulte and Yukich (2019). We illustrate our abstract results in two different situations: (i) we…
Let $Z^{α,β}$ be the Rosenblatt sheet with the representation $$ Z^{α,β}(t,s)=\int^t_0\int^s_0\int^t_0\int^s_0Q^α(t,y_1,y_2)Q^β(s,u_1,u_2)B(dy_1,du_1)B(dy_2,du_2) $$ where $B$ is a Brownian sheet, $\frac12<α,β<1$, $Q^α$ and $Q^β$ are the given kernel. In this paper, we contruct multiple Wiener integrals of the form \begin{align*} \int^t_0\int^s_0\int^t_0\int^s_0&[k_1(y_1,y_2)^{-\frac12α}(u_1,u_2)^{-\frac12β}+k_2(y_1\vee y_2)^{\frac12α}(y_1\wedge y_2)^{-\frac12α}|y_1-y_2|^{α-1}\\ &\cdot(u_1\vee u_2)^{\frac12β}(u_1\wedge u_2)^{-\frac12β}|u_1-u_2|^{β-1}]B(dy_1,du_1)B(dy_2,du_2),~~k_1,k_2\geq0, \e…
Let $C^*_{ε,S^2}$ denote the cover time of the two dimensional sphere by a Wiener sausage of radius $ε$. We prove that $$\sqrt{C^{*}_{ε,S^2} } -\sqrt{\frac{2A_{S^2}}π}(\log ε^{-1}-\frac14\log\log ε^{-1})$$ is tight, where $A_{S^2}=4π$ denotes the Riemannian area of $S^2$.
We combine Malliavin calculus with Stein's method, in order to derive explicit bounds in the Gaussian and Gamma approximations of random variables in a fixed Wiener chaos of a general Gaussian process. We also prove results concerning random variables admitting a possibly infinite Wiener chaotic decomposition. Our approach generalizes, refines and unifies the central and non-central limit theorems for multiple Wiener-Itô integrals recently proved (in several papers, from 2005 to 2007) by Nourdin, Nualart, Ortiz-Latorre, Peccati and Tudor. We apply our techniques to prove Berry-Esséen bounds in…

We compute explicit bounds in the normal and chi-square approximations of multilinear homogenous sums (of arbitrary order) of general centered independent random variables with unit variance. In particular, we show that chaotic random variables enjoy the following form of universality: (a) the normal and chi-square approximations of any homogenous sum can be completely characterized and assessed by first switching to its Wiener chaos counterpart, and (b) the simple upper bounds and convergence criteria available on the Wiener chaos extend almost verbatim to the class of homogeneous sums.
Let $ξ(k,n)$ be the local time of a simple symmetric random walk on the line. We give a strong approximation of the centered local time process $ξ(k,n)-ξ(0,n)$ in terms of a Wiener sheet and an independent Wiener process, time changed by an independent Brownian local time. Some related results and consequences are also established.
In an abstract Wiener space setting, we constract a rigorous mathematical model of the one-loop approximation of the perturbative Chern-Simons integral, and derive its explicit asymptotic expansion for stochastic Wilson lines.
We prove a convergence theorem for a sequence of super-Brownian motions moving among hard Poissonian obstacles, when the intensity of the obstacles grows to infinity but their diameters shrink to zero in an appropriate manner. The superprocesses are shown to converge in probability for the law $\mathbf{P}$ of the obstacles, and $\mathbf{P}$-almost surely for a subsequence, towards a superprocess with underlying spatial motion given by Brownian motion and (inhomogeneous) branching mechanism $ψ(u,x)$ of the form $ψ(u,x)= u^2+ κ(x)u$, where $κ(x)$ depends on the density of the obstacles. This wor…
The first passage time density of a diffusion process to a time varying threshold is of primary interest in different fields. Here we consider a Brownian motion in presence of an exponentially decaying threshold to model the neuronal spiking activity. Since analytical expressions of the first passage time density are not available, we propose to approximate the curved boundary by means of a continuous two-piecewise linear threshold. Explicit expressions for the first passage time density towards the new boundary are provided. Then we introduce different approximating linear threshold and descr…
We characterize the relaxation of the perimeter in an infinite dimensional Wiener space, with respect to the weak L^2-topology. We also show that the rescaled Allen-Cahn functionals approximate this relaxed functional in the sense of Gamma-convergence.

The Doss-Sussmann (DS) approach is used for uniform simulation of the Cox-Ingersoll-Ross (CIR) process. The DS formalism allows to express trajectories of the CIR process through solutions of some ordinary differential equation (ODE) depending on realizations of a Wiener process involved. By simulating the first-passage times of the increments of the Wiener process to the boundary of an interval and solving the ODE, we uniformly approximate the trajectories of the CIR process. In this respect special attention is payed to simulation of trajectories near zero. From a conceptual point of view th…
Certain natural geometric approximation schemes are developed for Wiener measure on a compact Riemannian manifold. These approximations closely mimic the informal path integral formulas used in the physics literature for representing the heat semi-group on Riemannian manifolds. The path space is approximated by finite dimensional manifolds consisting of piecewise geodesic paths adapted to partitions $P$ of $[0,1]$. The finite dimensional manifolds of piecewise geodesics carry both an $H^{1}$ and a $L^{2}$ type Riemannian structures $G^i_P$. It is proved that as the mesh of the partition tends …
In this paper we deal with pointwise approximation of solutions of stochastic differential equations (SDEs) driven by infinite dimensional Wiener process with additional jumps generated by Poisson random measure. The further investigations contain upper error bounds for the proposed truncated dimension randomized Euler scheme. We also establish matching (up to constants) upper and lower bounds for $\varepsilon$-complexity and show that the defined algorithm is optimal in the Information-Based Complexity (IBC) sense. Finally, results of numerical experiments performed by using GPU architecture …
In this paper by calculating carefully the capacities (defined by high order Sobolev norms on the Wiener space) for some functions of Brownian motion, we show that the dyadic approximations of the sample paths of the Brownian motion converge in the $p$-variation distance to the Brownian motion except for a slim set (i.e. except for a zero subset with respect to the capacity on the Wiener space of any order). This presents a way for studying quasi-sure properties of Wiener functionals by means of the rough path analysis.
In this paper we deal with global approximation of solutions of stochastic differential equations (SDEs) driven by countably dimensional Wiener process. Under certain regularity conditions imposed on the coefficients, we show lower bounds for exact asymptotic error behaviour. For that reason, we analyse separately two classes of admissible algorithms: based on equidistant, and possibly not equidistant meshes. Our results indicate that in both cases, decrease of any method error requires significant increase of the cost term, which is illustrated by the product of cost and error diverging to in…
This paper gives a rigorous interpretation of a Feynman path integral on a Riemannian manifold M with non-positive sectional curvature. A $L^2$ Riemannian metric $G_P$ is given on the space of piecewise geodesic paths $H_P(M)$ adapted to the partition $P$ of $[0,1]$, whence a finite-dimensional approximation of Wiener measure is developed. It is proved that, as $mesh(P) \to 0$, the approximate Wiener measure converges in a $L^1$ sense to the measure $e^{-\frac{2 + \sqrt{3}}{20\sqrt{3}} \int_0^1 Scal(σ(s)) ds} dν(σ)$ on the Wiener space $W(M)$ with Wiener measure $ν$. This gives a possible pres…
This paper establishes an upper bound for the Kolmogorov distance between the maximum of a high-dimensional vector of smooth Wiener functionals and the maximum of a Gaussian random vector. As a special case, we show that the maximum of multiple Wiener-Itô integrals with common orders is well-approximated by its Gaussian analog in terms of the Kolmogorov distance if their covariance matrices are close to each other and the maximum of the fourth cumulants of the multiple Wiener-Itô integrals is close to zero. This may be viewed as a new kind of fourth moment phenomenon, which has attracted consi…
The celebrated results of Komlós, Major and Tusnády [Z. Wahrsch. Verw. Gebiete 32 (1975) 111-131; Z. Wahrsch. Verw. Gebiete 34 (1976) 33-58] give optimal Wiener approximation for the partial sums of i.i.d. random variables and provide a powerful tool in probability and statistics. In this paper we extend KMT approximation for a large class of dependent stationary processes, solving a long standing open problem in probability theory. Under the framework of stationary causal processes and functional dependence measures of Wu [Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 102 (2005) 14150-14154], we show that, unde…
