We establish explicit bounds on the convex distance between the distribution of a vector of smooth functionals of a Gaussian field, and that of a normal vector with a positive definite covariance matrix. Our bounds are commensurate to the ones obtained by Nourdin, Peccati and Réveillac (2010) for the (smoother) 1-Wasserstein distance, and do not involve any additional logarithmic factor. One of the main tools exploited in our work is a recursive estimate on the convex distance recently obtained by Schulte and Yukich (2019). We illustrate our abstract results in two different situations: (i) we prove a quantitative multivariate fourth moment theorem for vectors of multiple Wiener-Itô integrals, and (ii) we characterise the rate of convergence for the finite-dimensional distributions in the functional Breuer-Major theorem.
We define, in the frame of an abstract Wiener space, the notions of convexity and of concavity for the equivalence classes of random variables. As application we show that some important inequalities of the finite dimensional case have their natural counterparts in this setting.
In this paper, a product formula of Hermite polynomials is given and then the relation between the real Wiener-Itô chaos and the complex Wiener-Itô chaos (or: multiple integrals) is shown. By this relation and the known multivariate extension of the fourth moment theorem for the real multiple integrals, the fourth moment theorem (or say: the Nualart-Peccati criterion) for the complex Wiener-Itô multiple integrals is obtained.
We show convexity of solutions to a class of convex variational problems in the Gauss and in the Wiener space. An important tool in the proof is a representation formula for integral functionals in this infinite dimensional setting, that extends analogous results valid in the classical Euclidean framework.
We consider the $(1,2)$-Sobolev space $W^{1,2}(U)$ on subsets $U$ in an abstract Wiener space, which is regarded as a canonical Dirichlet space on $U$. We prove that $W^{1,2}(U)$ has smooth cylindrical functions as a dense subset if $U$ is $H$-convex and $H$-open. For the proof, the relations between $H$-notions and quasi-notions are also studied.
We combine Malliavin calculus with Stein's method to derive bounds for the Variance-Gamma approximation of functionals of isonormal Gaussian processes, in particular of random variables living inside a fixed Wiener chaos induced by such a process. The bounds are presented in terms of Malliavin operators and norms of contractions. We show that a sequence of distributions of random variables in the second Wiener chaos converges to a Variance-Gamma distribution if and only if their moments of order two to six converge to that of a Variance-Gamma distributed random variable (six moment theorem). M…
We prove a multivariate functional version of de Jong's CLT (1990) yielding that, given a sequence of vectors of Hoeffding-degenerate U-statistics, the corresponding empirical processes on $[0,1]$ weakly converge in the Skorohod space as soon as their fourth cumulants in $t=1$ vanish asymptotically and a certain strengthening of the Lindeberg-type condition is verified. As an application, we lift to the functional level the `universality of Wiener chaos' phenomenon first observed in Nourdin, Peccati and Reinert (2010).
In this paper we study two basic facts of optimal transportation on Wiener space W. Our first aim is to answer to the Monge Problem on the Wiener space endowed with the Sobolev type norm (k,gamma) to the power of p (cases p = 1 and p > 1 are considered apart). The second one is to prove 1-convexity (resp. C-convexity) along (constant speed) geodesics of relative entropy in (P2(W);W2), where W is endowed with the infinite norm (resp. with (k,gamma) norm), and W2 is the 2-distance of Wasserstein.
The aim of this paper is to establish some new results on the absolute continuity and the convergence in total variation for a sequence of d-dimensional vectors whose components belong to a finite sum of Wiener chaoses. First we show that the probability that the determinant of the Malliavin matrix of such vectors vanishes is zero or one, and this probability equals to one is equivalent to say that the vector takes values in the set of zeros of a polynomial. We provide a bound for the degree of this annihilating polynomial improving a result by Kusuoka. On the other hand, we show that the conv…
This paper deals with Poisson processes on an arbitrary measurable space. Using a direct approach, we derive formulae for moments and cumulants of a vector of multiple Wiener-Itô integrals with respect to the compensated Poisson process. Second, a multivariate central limit theorem is shown for a vector whose components admit a finite chaos expansion of the type of a Poisson U-statistic. The approach is based on recent results of Peccati et al.\ combining Malliavin calculus and Stein's method, and also yields Berry-Esseen type bounds. As applications, moment formulae and central limit theorems…
The fractional Brownian motion of index $0 < H < 1$, H-FBM, with d-dimensional time is considered on an expanding set TG, where G is a bounded convex domain that contains 0 at its boundary. The main result: if 0 is a point of smoothness of the boundary, then the log-asymptotics of probability that H-FBM does not exceed a fixed positive level in TG is $(H - d + o(1)) \log T$, $T\to\infty$. Some generalizations of this result to isotropic but not self-similar Gaussian processes with stationary increments are also considered.
We consider a multivariate distributional recursion of sum-type as arising in the probabilistic analysis of algorithms and random trees. We prove an upper tail bound for the solution using Chernoff's bounding technique by estimating the Laplace transform. The problem is traced back to the corresponding problem for binary search trees by stochastic domination. The result obtained is applied to the internal path length and Wiener index of random b-ary recursive trees with weighted edges and random linear recursive trees. Finally, lower tail bounds for the Wiener index of these trees are given.
Consider the random polytope, that is given by the convex hull of a Poisson point process on a smooth convex body in $\mathbb{R}^d$. We prove central limit theorems for continuous motion invariant valuations including the Will's functional and the intrinsic volumes of this random polytope. Additionally we derive a central limit theorem for the oracle estimator, that is an unbiased an minimal variance estimator for the volume of a convex set. Finally we obtain a multivariate limit theorem for the intrinsic volumes and the components of the $\mathbf{f}$-vector of the random polytope.
In this work we consider infinite dimensional extensions of some finite dimensional Gaussian geometric functionals called the Gaussian Minkowski functionals. These functionals appear as coefficients in the probability content of a tube around a convex set $D\subset\mathbb{R}^k$ under the standard Gaussian law $N(0,I_{k\times k})$. Using these infinite dimensional extensions, we consider geometric properties of some smooth random fields in the spirit of [Random Fields and Geometry (2007) Springer] that can be expressed in terms of reasonably smooth Wiener functionals.
Consider $F$ an element of the second Wiener chaos with variance one. In full generality, we show that, for every integer $p\ge 1$, there exists $η_p>0$ such that if $κ_4(F)<η_p$ then the Malliavin derivative of $F$ admits a negative moment of order $p$. This entails that any sequence of random variables in the second Wiener chaos converging in distribution to a non--degenerated Gaussian is getting more regular as its distribution is getting close to the normal law. This substantially generalizes some recent findings contained in \cite{hu2014convergence,hu2015density,nourdin2016fisher} where a…
In order to investigate minimal sufficient conditions for an abstract integral to belong to the convex hull of the integrand, we propose a system of axioms under which it happens. If the integrand is a continuous $R^n$-valued function over a path connected topological space, we prove that any such integral can be represented as a convex combination of values of the integrand in at most $n$ points, which yields an ultimate multivariate mean value theorem.
We provide a Lyapunov type bound in the multivariate central limit theorem for sums of independent, but not necessarily identically distributed random vectors. The error in the normal approximation is estimated for certain classes of sets, which include the class of measurable convex sets. The error bound is stated with explicit constants. The result is proved by means of Stein's method. In addition, we improve the constant in the bound of the Gaussian perimeter of convex sets.
We show the existence of the strong solutions of the Monge-Ampere equation for the log-concave measures without any regularity assumption. In particular the measures with density of the form $\exp -f$, where $f$ is an $H$-convex function which may take the value $\infty$ on a set of positive measure are included.
We generalise multivariate subordination of Lévy processes as introduced by Barndorff-Nielsen, Pedersen, and Sato to Hilbert space valued Lévy processes. The processes are explicitly characterised and conditions for integrability and martingale properties are derived under various assumptions of the Lévy process and subordinator. As an application of our theory we construct explicitly some Hilbert space valued versions of Lévy processes which are popular in the univariate and multivariate case. In particular, we define a normal inverse Gaussian Lévy process in Hilbert space as a subordination …
Given a vector $F=(F_1,\dots,F_m)$ of Poisson functionals $F_1,\dots,F_m$, we investigate the proximity between $F$ and an $m$-dimensional centered Gaussian random vector $N_Σ$ with covariance matrix $Σ\in\mathbb{R}^{m\times m}$. Apart from finding proximity bounds for the $d_2$- and $d_3$-distances, based on classes of smooth test functions, we obtain proximity bounds for the $d_{convex}$-distance, based on the less tractable test functions comprised of indicators of convex sets. The bounds for all three distances are shown to be of the same order, which is presumably optimal. The bounds are …
We give the solution of the Monge-Kantorovitch problem on the Wiener space for the singular Wasserstein metric which is defined with respect to the distance of the underlying Cameron-Martin space. We show, under the hypothesis that this distance is finite, the existence and the uniquness of the solutions, that they are supported by the graphs of the weak derivatives of H-convex Wiener functionals. then we prove the more general situation, where the measures are not even necessarily absolutely continuous w.r.to the Wiener measure. We give sufficient conditions for the hypothesis about the Wasse…
We consider the stochastic reflection problem associated with a self-adjoint operator $A$ and a cylindrical Wiener process on a convex set $K$ with nonempty interior and regular boundary $Σ$ in a Hilbert space $H$. We prove the existence and uniqueness of a smooth solution for the corresponding elliptic infinite-dimensional Kolmogorov equation with Neumann boundary condition on $Σ$.
We provide a new general theorem for multivariate normal approximation on convex sets. The theorem is formulated in terms of a multivariate extension of Stein couplings. We apply the results to a homogeneity test in dense random graphs and to prove multivariate asymptotic normality for certain doubly indexed permutation statistics.
The aim of the present work is to show that the results obtained earlier on the approximation of distributions of sums of independent summands by infinitely divisible laws may be transferred to the estimation of the closeness of distributions on convex polyhedra.
In this work we prove that the unique 1-convex solution of the Monge problem contructed from the solution of the Monge-Kantorovitch problem between the Wiener measure and a target measure which has a log-concave density w.r.to the Wiener measure is also the strong solution of the Monge-Ampere equation in the frame of infinite dimensional Frechet spaces. We enhance also the polar factorization results of the mappings which transform a spread measure to another one of finite Wasserstein distance. Finally we calculate the semimartingale decomposition of the transport process with respect to its n…
Classes of multivariate and cone valued infinitely divisible Gamma distributions are introduced. Particular emphasis is put on the cone-valued case, due to the relevance of infinitely divisible distributions on the positive semi-definite matrices in applications. The cone-valued class of generalised Gamma convolutions is studied. In particular, a characterisation in terms of an Itô-Wiener integral with respect to an infinitely divisible random measure associated to the jumps of a Lévy process is established. A new example of an infinitely divisible positive definite Gamma random matrix is intr…
For linear multivariate purely second order highla degenerated parabolic equations with univariate convex data, monotonicity of the coefficent matrices implies monotonicity of the related value functions under usual regularity and growth assumptions for the data and the coefficients. The comparison result is applied to a new product, i.e., symmetric passport options.
Consider a Poisson point process within a convex set in a Euclidean space. The Vietoris-Rips complex is the clique complex over the graph connecting all pairs of points with distance at most $δ$. Summing powers of the volume of all $k$-dimensional faces defines the volume-power functionals of these random simplicial complexes. The asymptotic behavior of the volume-power functionals of the Vietoris-Rips complex is investigated as the intensity of the underlying Poisson point process tends to infinity and the distance parameter goes to zero. Univariate and multivariate central limit theorems are…
The aim of the present work is to show that recent results of the authors on the approximation of distributions of sums of independent summands by the infinitely divisible laws on convex polyhedra can be shown via an alternative class of approximating infinitely divisible distributions. We will also generalize the results to the infinite-dimensional case.
It is known that each symmetric stable distribution in $R^d$ is related to a norm on $R^d$ that makes $R^d$ embeddable in $L_p([0,1])$. In case of a multivariate Cauchy distribution the unit ball in this norm corresponds is the polar set to a convex set in $R^d$ called a zonoid. This work interprets general stable laws using convex or star-shaped sets and exploits recent advances in convex geometry in order to come up with new probabilistic results for multivariate stable distributions. In particular, it provides expressions for moments of the Euclidean norm of a stable vector, mixed moments a…
We show that the convex hull of a large i.i.d. sample from an absolutely continuous log-concave distribution approximates a predetermined convex body in the logarithmic Hausdorff distance and in the Banach-Mazur distance. For log-concave distributions that decay super-exponentially, we also have approximation in the Hausdorff distance. These results are multivariate versions of the Gnedenko law of large numbers, which guarantees concentration of the maximum and minimum in the one-dimensional case. We provide quantitative bounds in terms of the number of points and the dimension of the ambient …
Consider the problem of drawing random variates $(X_1,\ldots,X_n)$ from a distribution where the marginal of each $X_i$ is specified, as well as the correlation between every pair $X_i$ and $X_j$. For given marginals, the Fréchet-Hoeffding bounds put a lower and upper bound on the correlation between $X_i$ and $X_j$. Any achievable correlation between $X_i$ and $X_j$ is a convex combinations of these bounds. The value $λ(X_i,X_j) \in [0,1]$ of this convex combination is called here the convexity parameter of $(X_i,X_j),$ with $λ(X_i,X_j) = 1$ corresponding to the upper bound and maximal correl…
This work includes a new characterization of the multivariate normal distribution. In particular, it is shown that a positive density function $f$ is Gaussian if and only if the $f(x+ y)/f(x)$ is convex in $x$ for every $y$. This result has implications to recent research regarding inadmissibility of a test studied by Moran~(1973).
We provide a new characterization of convex geometries via a multivariate version of an identity that was originally proved by Maneva, Mossel and Wainwright for certain combinatorial objects arising in the context of the k-SAT problem. We thus highlight the connection between various characterizations of convex geometries and a family of removal processes studied in the literature on random structures.
