Consider the problem of drawing random variates $(X_1,\ldots,X_n)$ from a distribution where the marginal of each $X_i$ is specified, as well as the correlation between every pair $X_i$ and $X_j$. For given marginals, the Fréchet-Hoeffding bounds put a lower and upper bound on the correlation between $X_i$ and $X_j$. Any achievable correlation between $X_i$ and $X_j$ is a convex combinations of these bounds. The value $λ(X_i,X_j) \in [0,1]$ of this convex combination is called here the convexity parameter of $(X_i,X_j),$ with $λ(X_i,X_j) = 1$ corresponding to the upper bound and maximal correlation. For given marginal distributions functions $F_1,\ldots,F_n$ of $(X_1,\ldots,X_n)$ we show that $λ(X_i,X_j) = λ_{ij}$ if and only if there exist symmetric Bernoulli random variables $(B_1,\ldots,B_n)$ (that is $\{0,1\}$ random variables with mean 1/2) such that $λ(B_i,B_j) = λ_{ij}$. In addition, we characterize completely the set of convexity parameters for symmetric Bernoulli marginals in two, three and four dimensions.
Building upon earlier work in which axioms were formulated for multivariate measures of concordance, we examine properties of such measures. In particular, we examine the relations between the measure of concordance of an $n$-copula and the measures of concordance of the copula's marginals.
A semi-analytic method is proposed for the generation of realizations of a multivariate process of a given linear correlation structure and marginal distribution. This is an extension of a similar method for univariate processes, transforming the autocorrelation of the non-Gaussian process to that of a Gaussian process based on a piece-wise linear marginal transform from non-Gaussian to Gaussian marginal. The extension to multivariate processes involves the derivation of the autocorrelation matrix from the marginal transforms, which determines the generating vector autoregressive process. The …
We give yet another example of the usefulness of working with marginals of multivariate Gibbs distributions (Cerquetti, 2013) in deriving Bayesian nonparametric estimators under Gibbs priors in species sampling problems. Here in particular we substantially reduce length and complexity of the proofs in Bacallado et al. (2013, Th. 1, and Th. 2) for looking backward probabilities under incomplete information.
The notion of multivariate upcrossings index of a stationary sequence ${\bf{X}}=\{(X_{n,1},\ldots,X_{n,d})\}_{n\geq 1}$ is introduced and its main properties are derived, namely the relations with the multivariate extremal index and the clustering of upcrossings. Under asymptotic independence conditions on the marginal sequences of ${\bf{X}}$ the multivariate upcrossings index is obtained from the marginal upcrossings indices. For a class of stationary multidimensional sequences assumed to satisfy a mild oscillation restriction, the multivariate upcrossings index is computed from the joint dis…
Gaussian random vectors exhibit the loss of dimension phenomena, which relate to their joint survival tail behaviour. Besides, the fact that the components of such vectors are light-tailed complicates the approximations of various multivariate risk measures significantly. In this contribution we derive precise approximations of marginal mean excess, marginal expected shortfall and multivariate conditional tail expectation of Gaussian random vectors and highlight links with conditional limit theorems. Our study indicates that similar results hold for elliptical and Gaussian like multivariate ri…
Gibbs partition models are the largest class of infinite exchangeable partitions of the positive integers generalizing the product form of the probability function of the two-parameter Poisson-Dirichlet family. Recently those models have been investigated in a Bayesian nonparametric approach to species sampling problems as alternatives to the Dirichlet and the Pitman-Yor process priors. Here we derive marginals of conditional and unconditional multivariate distributions arising from exchangeable Gibbs partitions to obtain explicit formulas for joint falling factorial moments of corresponding c…
We explore the consequences of a set of axioms which extend Scarsini's axioms for bivariate measures of concordance to the multivariate case and exhibit the following results: (1) A method of extending measures of concordance from the bivariate case to arbitrarily high dimensions. (2) A formula expressing the measure of concordance of the random vectors $(\pm X_1,...,\pm X_n)$ in terms of the measures of concordance of the "marginal" random vectors $(X_{i_1},...,X_{i_k})$. (3) A method of expressing the measure of concordance of an odd-dimensional copula in terms of the measures of concordance…
In this paper we present a method for exact generation of multivariate samples with pre-specified marginal distributions and a given correlation matrix, based on a mixture of Fréchet-Hoeffding bounds and marginal products. The bivariate algorithm can accommodate any among the theoretically possible correlation coefficients, and explicitly provides a connection between simulation and the minimum correlation attainable for different distribution families. We calculate the minimum correlations in several common distributional examples, including in some that have not been looked at before. As an …
We define a multivariate medial correlation coefficient that extends the probabilistic interpretation and properties of Blomqvist's $β$ coefficient, incorporates multivariate marginal dependencies and it preserves a stronger multivariate concordance relation. We determine the maximum and minimum values attainable and illustrate the results in some models. We end with an application on real datasets.
This paper introduces vector copulas associated with multivariate distributions with given multivariate marginals, based on the theory of measure transportation, and establishes a vector version of Sklar's theorem. The latter provides a theoretical justification for the use of vector copulas to characterize nonlinear or rank dependence between a finite number of random vectors (robust to within vector dependence), and to construct multivariate distributions with any given non overlapping multivariate marginals. We construct Elliptical and Kendall families of vector copulas, derive their densit…
Let $N,d > 1$ be fixed integers, let $(T_1, ..., T_N)$ be random d-by-d matrices with nonnegative entries and $Q$ a random d-vector with nonnegative entries. This induces a mapping (the multivariate smoothing transform) on probability laws on the nonnegative cone by $S η:= \mathrm{Law\ of}\ (T_1 X_1 + ... + T_N X_N + Q)$, where the $X_i$ are iid with law $η$ and independent of $(T_1, ..., T_N, Q)$. Under conditions similar to those for the well-studied case d=1, a complete characterization of all fixed points of $S$ is obtained.
A multivariate fractional Poisson process was recently defined in Beghin and Macci (2016) by considering a common independent random time change for a finite dimensional vector of independent (non-fractional) Poisson processes; moreover it was proved that, for each fixed $t\geq 0$, it has a suitable multinomial conditional distribution of the components given their sum. In this paper we consider another multivariate process $\{\underline{M}^ν(t)=(M_1^ν(t),\ldots,M_m^ν(t)):t\geq 0\}$ with the same conditional distributions of the components given their sums, and different marginal distributions…
Given a sequence $(T_1, T_2, ...)$ of random $d \times d$ matrices with nonnegative entries, suppose there is a random vector $X$ with nonnegative entries, such that $ \sum_{i \ge 1} T_i X_i $ has the same law as $X$, where $(X_1, X_2, ...)$ are i.i.d. copies of $X$, independent of $(T_1, T_2, ...)$. Then (the law of) $X$ is called a fixed point of the multivariate smoothing transform. Similar to the well-studied one-dimensional case $d=1$, a function $m$ is introduced, such that the existence of $α\in (0,1]$ with $m(α)=1$ and $m'(α) \le 0$ guarantees the existence of nontrivial fixed points. …
We introduce a new class of multivariate elliptically symmetric distributions including elliptically symmetric logistic distributions and Kotz type distributions. We investigate the various probabilistic properties including marginal distributions, conditional distributions, linear transformations, characteristic functions and dependence measure in the perspective of the inconsistency property. In addition, we provide a real data example to show that the new distributions have reasonable flexibility.
We extend the construction principle of multivariate phase-type distributions to establish an analytically tractable class of heavy-tailed multivariate random variables whose marginal distributions are of Mittag-Leffler type with arbitrary index of regular variation. The construction can essentially be seen as allowing a scalar parameter to become matrix-valued. The class of distributions is shown to be dense among all multivariate positive random variables and hence provides a versatile candidate for the modelling of heavy-tailed, but tail-independent, risks in various fields of application.
This paper provides a characterization of all possible dependency structures between two stochastically ordered random variables. The answer is given in terms of copulas that are compatible with the stochastic order and the marginal distributions. The extremal values for Kendall's $τ$ and Spearman's $ρ$ for all these copulas are given in closed form. We also find an explicit form for the joint distribution with the maximal entropy. A multivariate extension and a generalization to random elements in partially ordered spaces are also provided.
We extend the Kulkarni class of multivariate phase--type distributions in a natural time--fractional way to construct a new class of multivariate distributions with heavy-tailed Mittag-Leffler(ML)-distributed marginals. The approach relies on assigning rewards to a non--Mar\-ko\-vi\-an jump process with ML sojourn times. This new class complements an earlier multivariate ML construction \cite{multiml} and in contrast to the former also allows for tail dependence. We derive properties and characterizations of this class, and work out some special cases that lead to explicit density representati…
We introduce a new broad and exible class of multivariate elliptically symmetric distributions in- cluding the elliptically symmetric logistic and multivariate normal. Various probabilistic properties of the new distribution are studied, including the distribution of linear transformations, marginal distributions, conditional distributions, moments, stochastic representations and characteristic function.
By using a quantum probabilistic approach we obtain a description of the extreme points of the convex set of all joint probability distributions on the product of two standard Borel spaces with fixed marginal distributions.
The energy distance and energy scores became important tools in multivariate statistics and multivariate probabilistic forecasting in recent years. They are both based on the expected distance of two independent samples. In this paper we study dependence uncertainty bounds for these quantities under the assumption that we know the marginals but do not know the dependence structure. We find some interesting sharp analytic bounds, where one of them is obtained for an unusual spherically symmetric copula. These results should help to better understand the sensitivity of these measures to misspeci…
It is well known and readily seen that the maximum of $n$ independent and uniformly on $[0,1]$ distributed random variables, suitably standardised, converges in total variation distance, as $n$ increases, to the standard negative exponential distribution. We extend this result to higher dimensions by considering copulas. We show that the strong convergence result holds for copulas that are in a differential neighbourhood of a multivariate generalized Pareto copula. Sklar's theorem then implies convergence in variational distance of the maximum of $n$ independent and identically distributed ran…
We consider the multilinear polynomial-form process \[X(n)=\sum_{1\le i_1<\ldots<i_k<\infty}a_{i_1}\ldots a_{i_k}ε_{n-i_1}\ldotsε_{n-i_k},\] obtained by applying a multilinear polynomial-form filter to i.i.d.\ sequence $\{ε_i\}$ where $\{a_i\}$ is regularly varying. The resulting sequence $\{X(n)\}$ will then display either short or long memory. Now consider a vector of such X(n), whose components are defined through different $\{a_i\}$'s, that is, through different multilinear polynomial-form filters, but using the same $\{ε_i\}$. What is the limit of the normalized partial sums of the vector…
Given $d \ge 1$, let $(A_i)_{i\ge 1}$ be a sequence of random $d\times d$ real matrices and $Q$ be a random vector in $\mathbb{R}^d$. We consider fixed points of multivariate smoothing transforms, i.e. random variables $X\in \mathbb{R}^d$ satisfying $X$ has the same law as $\sum_{i \ge 1} A_i X_i + Q$, where $(X_i)_{i \ge 1}$ are i.i.d. copies of $X$ and independent of $(Q, (A_i)_{i \ge 1})$. The existence of fixed points that can attract point masses can be shown by means of contraction arguments. Let $X$ be such a fixed point. Assuming that the action of the matrices is expanding as well wit…
The univariate distorted distribution were introduced in risk theory to represent changes (distortions) in the expected distributions of some risks. Later they were also applied to represent distributions of order statistics, coherent systems, proportional hazard rate (PHR) and proportional reversed hazard rate (PRHR) models, etc. In this paper we extend this concept to the multivariate setup. We show that, in some cases, they are a valid alternative to the copula representations especially when the marginal distributions may not be easily handled. Several relevant examples illustrate the appl…
We discuss a bivariate beta distribution that can model arbitrary beta-distributed marginals with a positive correlation. The distribution is constructed from six independent gamma-distributed random variates. We show how the parameters of the distribution can be fit to data using moment matching. Previous work used an approximate and sometimes inaccurate method to compute the covariance. Here, we derive all product moments and the exact covariance, which can easily be computed numerically. The bivariate case can be generalized to a multivariate distribution with arbitrary beta-distributed mar…
Multivariate Poisson distributions have numerous applications. Fast computation of these distributions, holding constant a fixed set of linear combinations of these variables, has been explored by Sontag and Zeilberger. This elaborates on their work.
The upper extremes of a Markov chain with regulary varying stationary marginal distribution are known to exhibit under general conditions a multiplicative random walk structure called the tail chain. More generally, if the Markov chain is allowed to switch from positive to negative extremes or vice versa, the distribution of the tail chain increment may depend on the sign of the tail chain on the previous step. But even then, the forward and backward tail chain mutually determine each other through a kind of adjoint relation. As a consequence, the finite-dimensional distributions of the Markov…
