We discuss a bivariate beta distribution that can model arbitrary beta-distributed marginals with a positive correlation. The distribution is constructed from six independent gamma-distributed random variates. We show how the parameters of the distribution can be fit to data using moment matching. Previous work used an approximate and sometimes inaccurate method to compute the covariance. Here, we derive all product moments and the exact covariance, which can easily be computed numerically. The bivariate case can be generalized to a multivariate distribution with arbitrary beta-distributed marginals. Furthermore, we generalize the distribution from two marginal beta to two marginal Dirichlet distributions. The resulting correlated Dirichlet distribution makes it possible to model two correlated Dirichlet-distributed random vectors.
The bivariate normal density with unit variance and correlation $ρ$ is well-known. We show that by integrating out $ρ$, the result is a function of the maximum norm. The Bayesian interpretation of this result is that if we put a uniform prior over $ρ$, then the marginal bivariate density depends only on the maximal magnitude of the variables. The square-shaped isodensity contour of this resulting marginal bivariate density can also be regarded as the equally-weighted mixture of bivariate normal distributions over all possible correlation coefficients. This density links to the Khintchine mixtu…
In this paper, we describe a Bayesian nonparametric approach to make inference for a bivariate spherically symmetric distribution. We consider a Dirichlet invariant process prior on the set of all bivariate spherically symmetric distributions and we derive the Dirichlet invariant process posterior. Indeed, our approach is an extension of Dirichlet invariant process for the symmetric distributions on the real line to a bivariate spherically symmetric distribution where the underlying distribution is invariant under a finite group of rotations. Moreover, we obtain the Dirichlet invariant process…
In this paper, we introduce a bivariate exponentaited generalized Weibull-Gompertz distribution. The model introduced here is of Marshall-Olkin type. Several properties are studied such as bivariate probability density function and it is marginal, moments, maximum likelihood estimation, joint reversed (hazard) function and joint mean waiting time and it is marginal. A real data set is analyzed and it is observed that the present distribution can provide a better fit than some other very well-known distributions.
In this paper, we propose a new class of bivariate distributions, called the bivariate discrete inverse Weibull (BDsIW) distribution, whose marginals are discrete inverse Weibull (DsIW) distributions. Some statistical and mathematical properties are presented. The maximum likelihood method is used for estimating the model parameters. Simulations are presented to verify the performance of the direct maximum likelihood estimation. Finally, two real data sets are analyzed for illustrative purposes.
We explore the consequences of a set of axioms which extend Scarsini's axioms for bivariate measures of concordance to the multivariate case and exhibit the following results: (1) A method of extending measures of concordance from the bivariate case to arbitrarily high dimensions. (2) A formula expressing the measure of concordance of the random vectors $(\pm X_1,...,\pm X_n)$ in terms of the measures of concordance of the "marginal" random vectors $(X_{i_1},...,X_{i_k})$. (3) A method of expressing the measure of concordance of an odd-dimensional copula in terms of the measures of concordance…
In this paper, we introduce a new bivariate distribution we called it bivariate expo- nentiated modified Weibull extension distribution (BEMWE). The model introduced here is of Marshall-Olkin type. The marginals of the new bivariate distribution have exponentiated modified Weibull extension distribution which proposed by Sarhan et al.(2013). The joint probability density function and the joint cumulative distribu- tion function are in closed forms. Several properties of this distribution have been discussed. The maximum likelihood estimators of the parameters are derived. One real data set are …
Consider a bivariate Geometric random variable where the first component has parameter $p_1$ and the second parameter $p_2$. It is not possible to make the correlation between the marginals equal to -1. Here the properties of this minimum correlation are studied both numerically and analytically. It is shown that the minimum correlation can be computed exactly in time $O(p_1^{-1} \ln(p_2^{-1}) + p_2^{-1} \ln(p_1^{-1}))$. The minimum correlation is shown to be nonmonotonic in $p_1$ and $p_2$, moreover, the partial derivatives are not continuous. For $p_1 = p_2$, these discontinuities are charac…
The beta distribution is a basic distribution serving several purposes. It is used to model data, and also, as a more flexible version of the uniform distribution, it serves as a prior distribution for a binomial probability. The bivariate beta distribution plays a similar role for two probabilities that have a bivariate binomial distribution. We provide a new multivariate distribution with beta marginal distributions, positive probability over the unit square, and correlations over the full range. We discuss its extension to three or more dimensions.
In situations where the sampling units in a study can be more easily ranked based on the measurement of an auxiliary variable, ranked set sampling provide unbiased estimators for the mean of a population that they are more efficient than unbiased estimator based on simple random sample. In this paper, we consider the Morgenstern type bivariate generalized exponential distribution (MTBGED) and obtain several unbiased estimators for a parameter mean of the marginal distribution of MTBGED based on different ranked set sampling schemes. The efficiency of all considered estimators are evaluate and …
Study of the bivariate normal distribution raises the full range of issues involving objective Bayesian inference, including the different types of objective priors (e.g., Jeffreys, invariant, reference, matching), the different modes of inference (e.g., Bayesian, frequentist, fiducial) and the criteria involved in deciding on optimal objective priors (e.g., ease of computation, frequentist performance, marginalization paradoxes). Summary recommendations as to optimal objective priors are made for a variety of inferences involving the bivariate normal distribution. In the course of the investi…
This paper develops some objective priors for certain parameters of the bivariate normal distribution. The parameters considered are the regression coefficient, the generalized variance, and the ratio of the conditional variance of one variable given the other to the marginal variance of the other variable. The criterion used is the asymptotic matching of coverage probabilities of Bayesian credible intervals with the corresponding frequentist coverage probabilities. The paper uses various matching criteria, namely, quantile matching, matching of distribution functions, highest posterior densit…
Gibbs partition models are the largest class of infinite exchangeable partitions of the positive integers generalizing the product form of the probability function of the two-parameter Poisson-Dirichlet family. Recently those models have been investigated in a Bayesian nonparametric approach to species sampling problems as alternatives to the Dirichlet and the Pitman-Yor process priors. Here we derive marginals of conditional and unconditional multivariate distributions arising from exchangeable Gibbs partitions to obtain explicit formulas for joint falling factorial moments of corresponding c…
We consider a multivariate version of the so-called Lancaster problem of characterizing canonical correlation coefficients of symmetric bivariate distributions with identical marginals and orthogonal polynomial expansions. The marginal distributions examined in this paper are the Dirichlet and the Dirichlet multinomial distribution, respectively, on the continuous and the N-discrete d-dimensional simplex. Their infinite-dimensional limit distributions, respectively, the Poisson-Dirichlet distribution and Ewens's sampling formula, are considered as well. We study, in particular, the possibility…
We consider component-wise estimation of order restricted location/scale parameters $θ_1$ and $θ_2$ ($θ_1\leq θ_2$) of a general bivariate distribution under the squared error loss function. To find improvements over the best location/scale equivariant estimators (BLEE/BSEE) of $θ_1$ and $θ_2$, we study isotonic regression of suitable location/scale equivariant estimators (LEE/SEE) of $θ_1$ and $θ_2$ with general weights. Let $\mathcal{D}_{1,ν}$ and $\mathcal{D}_{2,β}$ denote suitable classes of isotonic regression estimators of $θ_1$ and $θ_2$, respectively. Under the squared error loss funct…
The problem of simultaneous estimation of location/scale parameters $θ_1$ and $θ_2$ of a general bivariate location/scale model, when the ordering between the parameters is known apriori (say, $θ_1\leq θ_2$), has been considered. We consider isotonic regression estimators based on the best location/scale equivariant estimators (BLEEs/BSEEs) of $θ_1$ and $θ_2$ with general weight functions. Let $\mathcal{D}$ denote the corresponding class of isotonic regression estimators of $(θ_1,θ_2)$. Under the sum of the weighted squared error loss function, we characterize admissible estimators within the …
In the classical two-sample problem, the conventional approach for testing distributions equality is based on the difference between the two marginal empirical distribution functions, whereas a test for independence is based on the contrast between the bivariate and the product of the marginal empirical distribution functions. In this article we consider the problem of testing independence and distributions equality when the observer is "colour blind" so he cannot distinguish the distribution which has generated each of the two measurements. Within a nonparametric framework, we propose an empi…
When an interval of integers between the lower bound l_i and the upper bounds u_i is the support of the marginal distribution n_i|(n_{i-1}, ...,n_1), Chen et al. 2005 noticed that sampling from the interval at each step, for n_i during the sequential importance sampling (SIS) procedure, always produces a table which satisfies the marginal constraints. However, in general, the interval may not be equal to the support of the marginal distribution. In this case, the SIS procedure may produce tables which do not satisfy the marginal constraints, leading to rejection [Chen et al. 2006]. Rejecting t…
A bivariate distribution with continuous margins can be uniquely decomposed via a copula and its marginal distributions. We consider the problem of estimating the copula function and adopt a Bayesian approach. On the space of copula functions, we construct a finite-dimensional approximation subspace that is parametrized by a doubly stochastic matrix. A major problem here is the selection of a prior distribution on the space of doubly stochastic matrices also known as the Birkhoff polytope. The main contributions of this paper are the derivation of a simple formula for the Jeffreys prior and sh…
We propose a new model for regression and dependence analysis when addressing spatial data with possibly heavy tails and an asymmetric marginal distribution. We first propose a stationary process with $t$ marginals obtained through scale mixing of a Gaussian process with an inverse square root process with Gamma marginals. We then generalize this construction by considering a skew-Gaussian process, thus obtaining a process with skew-t marginal distributions. For the proposed (skew) $t$ process we study the second-order and geometrical properties and in the $t$ case, we provide analytic express…
We propose a bivariate model for a pair of dependent unit vectors which is generated by Brownian motion. Both marginals have uniform distributions on the sphere, while the conditionals follow so-called ``exit'' distributions. Some properties of the proposed model, including parameter estimation and a pivotal statistic, are investigated. Further study is undertaken for the bivariate circular case by transforming variables and parameters into the form of complex numbers. Some desirable properties, such as a multiplicative property and infinite divisibility, hold for this submodel. Two estimators…
We introduce a new class of nonparametric prior distributions on the space of continuously varying densities, induced by Dirichlet process mixtures which diffuse in time. These select time-indexed random functions without jumps, whose sections are continuous or discrete distributions depending on the choice of kernel. The construction exploits the widely used stick-breaking representation of the Dirichlet process and induces the time dependence by replacing the stick-breaking components with one-dimensional Wright-Fisher diffusions. These features combine appealing properties of the model, inh…
In risk management, often the probability must be estimated that a random vector falls into an extreme failure set. In the framework of bivariate extreme value theory, we construct an estimator for such failure probabilities and analyze its asymptotic properties under natural conditions. It turns out that the estimation error is mainly determined by the accuracy of the statistical analysis of the marginal distributions if the extreme value approximation to the dependence structure is at least as accurate as the generalized Pareto approximation to the marginal distributions. Moreover, we establ…

Latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA) obtains essential information from data by using Bayesian inference. It is applied to knowledge discovery via dimension reducing and clustering in many fields. However, its generalization error had not been yet clarified since it is a singular statistical model where there is no one-to-one mapping from parameters to probability distributions. In this paper, we give the exact asymptotic form of its generalization error and marginal likelihood, by theoretical analysis of its learning coefficient using algebraic geometry. The theoretical result shows that the Bay…
