We study the rate of convergence of linear two-time-scale stochastic approximation methods. We consider two-time-scale linear iterations driven by i.i.d. noise, prove some results on their asymptotic covariance and establish asymptotic normality. The well-known result [Polyak, B. T. (1990). Automat.
Remote Contr. 51 937-946; Ruppert, D. (1988). Technical Report 781, Cornell Univ.] on the optimality of Polyak-Ruppert averaging techniques specialized to linear stochastic approximation is established as a consequence of the general results in this paper.
We study systems of simple point processes that admit stochastic intensities. We represent these point processes as thinnings of Poisson measures and are interested in a convergence result of such systems. This result states that, if the stochastic intensities of the limit point processes are independent of the underlying Poisson measures, the convergence in distribution in Skorohod topology of the stochastic intensities implies the same convergence for the point processes.
We derive a stochastic Gronwall lemma with suprema over the paths in the upper bound of the assumed affine-linear growth assumption. This allows applications to Itô processes with coefficients which depend on earlier time points such as stochastic delay equations or Euler-type approximations of stochastic differential equations. We apply our stochastic Gronwall lemma with path-suprema to stochastic functional differential equations and prove a strong convergence rate for coefficient functions which depend on path-suprema.
In this article we establish strong convergence rates on the whole probability space for explicit full-discrete approximations of stochastic Burgers equations with multiplicative trace-class noise. The key step in our proof is to establish uniform exponential moment estimates for the numerical approximations.
It is a well-established fact in the scientific literature that Picard iterations of backward stochastic differential equations with globally Lipschitz continuous nonlinearity converge at least exponentially fast to the solution. In this paper we prove that this convergence is in fact at least square-root factorially fast. We show for one example that no higher convergence speed is possible in general. Moreover, if the nonlinearity is $z$-independent, then the convergence is even factorially fast. Thus we reveal a phase transition in the speed of convergence of Picard iterations of backward st…
We study stochastic model reduction for evolution equations in infinite dimensional Hilbert spaces, and show the convergence to the reduced equations via abstract results of Wong-Zakai type for stochastic equations driven by a scaled Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process. Both weak and strong convergence are investigated, depending on the presence of quadratic interactions between reduced variables and driving noise. Finally, we are able to apply our results to a class of equations used in climate modeling.
Rate of convergence of Euler approximations of solution to mixed stochastic differential equation involving Brownian motion and fractional Brownian motion
In this brief paper we find computable exponential convergence rates for a large class of stochastically ordered Markov processes. We extend the result of Lund, Meyn, and Tweedie (1996), who found exponential convergence rates for stochastically ordered Markov processes starting from a fixed initial state, by allowing for a random initial condition that is also stochastically ordered. Our bounds are formulated in terms of moment-generating functions of hitting times. To illustrate our result, we find an explicit exponential convergence rate for an M/M/1 queue beginning in equilibrium and then …
Our aim is to find sufficient conditions for weak convergence of stochastic integrals with respect to the state occupation measure of a Markov chain. First, we study properties of the state indicator function and the state occupation measure of a Markov chain. In particular, we establish weak convergence of the state occupation measure under a scaling of the generator matrix. Then, relying on the connection between the state occupation measure and the Dynkin martingale related to the state indicator function, we provide sufficient conditions for weak convergence of stochastic integrals with re…
In this paper, we study the averaging principle for a class of stochastic differential equations driven by $α$-stable processes with slow and fast time-scales, where $α\in(1,2)$. We prove that the strong and weak convergence order are $1-1/α$ and $1$ respectively. We show, by a simple example, that $1-1/α$ is the optimal strong convergence rate.
The aim of this paper is to investigate strong convergence of modified truncated Euler-Maruyama method for neutral stochastic differential delay equations introduced in Lan (2018). Strong convergence rates of the given numerical scheme to the exact solutions at fixed time $T$ are obtained under local Lipschitz and Khasminskii-type conditions. Moreover, convergence rates over a time interval $[0,T]$ are also obtained under additional polynomial growth condition on $g$ without the weak monotonicity condition (which is usually the standard assumption to obtain the convergence rate). Two examples …
We consider a nonlinear filtering problem of multiscale non-Gaussian signal processes and observation processes with jumps. Firstly, we prove that the dimension for the signal system can be reduced by a homogenized approach. Secondly, convergence of the corresponding nonlinear filtering to the homogenized filtering is shown by a weak convergence technique. Finally, we give an example to explain our result.
A numerical method is proposed for a class of stochastic control problems including singular behavior. This method solves an infinite-dimensional linear program equivalent to the stochastic control problem using a finite element type approximation, which results in a solvable finite-dimensional program. The discretization scheme as well as the necessary assumptions are discussed, and a detailed convergence analysis for the discretization scheme is given. Its performance is illustrated by two examples featuring a long-term average cost criterion.
In this article, we investigate averaging principle for stochastic hyperbolic-parabolic equations with two time-scales, in which both the slow and fast components are perturbed by multiplicative noises. Particularly, we prove that the rate of strong convergence for the slow component to the averaged dynamics is of order $1/2$, which significantly improves the order $1/4$ established in our previous work.
We prove that some discretization schemes for the 2D Navier-Stokes equations subject to a random perturbation converge in $L^2(Ω)$. This refines previous results which only established the convergence in probability of these numerical approximations. Using exponential moment estimates of the solution of the stochastic NS equations and convergence of a localized scheme, we can prove strong convergence of fully implicit and semi-implicit time Euler discretizations, and of a splitting scheme. The speed of the $L^2(Ω)$-convergence depends on the diffusion coefficient and on the viscosity parameter…
We study diffusion processes and stochastic flows which are time-changed random perturbations of a deterministic flow on a manifold. Using non-symmetric Dirichlet forms and their convergence in a sense close to the Mosco-convergence, we prove that, as the deterministic flow is accelerated, the diffusion process converges in law to a diffusion defined on a different space. This averaging principle also holds at the level of the flows. Our contributions in this article include: a proof of an original averaging principle for stochastic flows of kernels; the definition and study of a convergence o…
The convergence to the stationary regime is studied for Stochastic Differential Equations driven by an additive Gaussian noise and evolving in a semi-contractive environment, i.e. when the drift is only contractive out of a compact set but does not have repulsive regions. In this setting, we develop a synchronous coupling strategy to obtain sub-exponential bounds on the rate of convergence to equilibrium in Wasserstein distance. Then by a coalescent coupling close to terminal time, we derive a similar bound in total variation distance.
In this paper, we study the strong and weak convergence rates for multi-scale one-dimensional stochastic Burgers equation. Based on the techniques of Galerkin approximation, Kolmogorov equation and Poisson equation, we obtain the slow component strongly and weakly converges to the solution of the corresponding averaged equation with optimal orders 1/2 and 1 respectively. The highly nonlinear term in system brings us huge difficulties, we develop new technique to overcome these difficulties. To the best of our knowledge, this work seems to be the first result in which the optimal convergence or…
We study the convergence behavior of the stochastic heavy-ball method with a small stepsize. Under a change of time scale, we approximate the discrete method by a stochastic differential equation that models small random perturbations of a coupled system of nonlinear oscillators. We rigorously show that the perturbed system converges to a local minimum in a logarithmic time. This indicates that for the diffusion process that approximates the stochastic heavy-ball method, it takes (up to a logarithmic factor) only a linear time of the square root of the inverse stepsize to escape from all saddl…
Strong and weak approximation errors of a spatial finite element method are analyzed for stochastic partial differential equations(SPDEs) with one-sided Lipschitz coefficients, including the stochastic Allen--Cahn equation, driven by additive noise. In order to give the strong convergence rate of the finite element method, we present an appropriate decomposition and some a priori estimates of the discrete stochastic convolution. To the best of our knowledge, there has been no essentially sharp weak convergence rate of spatial approximation for parabolic SPDEs with non-globally Lipschitz coeffi…
In this paper, we are interested in the speed of convergence of the stochastic billiard evolving in a convex set K. This process can be described as follows: a particle moves at unit speed inside the set K until it hits the boundary, and is randomly reflected, independently of its position and previous velocity. We focus on convex sets in R 2 with a curvature bounded from above and below. We give an explicit coupling for both the continuous-time process and the embedded Markov chain of hitting points on the boundary, which leads to an explicit speed of convergence to equilibrium.
In this article we establish exponential moment bounds, moment bounds in fractional order smoothness spaces, a uniform Hölder continuity in time, and strong convergence rates for a class of fully discrete exponential Euler-type numerical approximations of infinite dimensional stochastic convolution processes. The considered approximations involve specific taming and truncation terms and are therefore well suited to be used in the context of SPDEs with non-globally Lipschitz continuous nonlinearities.
In this paper we compare the notion of stochastic two-scale convergence in the mean (by Bourgeat, Mikelić and Wright), the notion of stochastic unfolding (recently introduced by the authors), and the quenched notion of stochastic two-scale convergence (by Zhikov and Pyatnitskii). In particular, we introduce stochastic two-scale Young measures as a tool to compare mean and quenched limits. Moreover, we discuss two examples, which can be naturally analyzed via stochastic unfolding, but which cannot be treated via quenched stochastic two-scale convergence.
The main goal of the work is to study the stochastic averaging principle for two time-scales stochastic evolution equations driven by Lévy process. The solution of reduced equation with modified coefficient is derived to approximate the slow component of original equation under suitable condition. It is shown that the slow component can strongly converge to the solution of corresponding reduced equation in L^p(p>2)-strong convergence sense. Our key and novelty is how to cope with the changes caused by Lévy process and higher order moments.
This paper investigates the convergence of density approximations for stochastic heat equation in both uniform convergence topology and total variation distance. The convergence order of the densities in uniform convergence topology is shown to be exactly $1/2$ in the nonlinear case and nearly $1$ in the linear case. This result implies that the distributions of the approximations always converge to the distribution of the origin equation in total variation distance. As far as we know, this is the first result on the convergence of density approximations to the stochastic partial differential …
In this paper, we study a class of super-linear stochastic differential delay equations with Poisson jumps (SDDEwPJs). The convergence and rate of the convergence of the truncated Euler-Maruyama numerical solutions to SDDEwPJs are investigated under the generalized Khasminskii-type condition.
