We study systems of simple point processes that admit stochastic intensities. We represent these point processes as thinnings of Poisson measures and are interested in a convergence result of such systems. This result states that, if the stochastic intensities of the limit point processes are independent of the underlying Poisson measures, the convergence in distribution in Skorohod topology of the stochastic intensities implies the same convergence for the point processes.
We present new, exceptionally efficient proofs of Poisson--Dirichlet limit theorems for the scaled sizes of irreducible components of random elements in the classic combinatorial contexts of arbitrary assemblies, multisets, and selections, when the components generating functions satisfy certain standard hypotheses. The proofs exploit a new criterion for Poisson--Dirichlet limits, originally designed for rapid proofs of Billingsley's theorem on the scaled sizes of log prime factors of random integers (and some new generalizations). Unexpectedly, the technique applies in the present combinatori…
We consider the stochastic ranking process with space-time dependent unbounded jump rates for the particles. We prove that the joint empirical distribution of jump rate and scaled position converges almost surely to a deterministic distribution in the infinite particle limit. We assume topology of weak convergence for the space of distributions, which implies that the fluctuations among particles with different jump rates cancel in the limit. The results are proved by first finding an auxiliary stochastic ranking process, for which a strong law of large numbers is applied, and then applying a …
Based on a weak convergence argument, we provide a necessary and sufficient condition that guarantees that a nonnegative local martingale is indeed a martingale. Typically, conditions of this sort are expressed in terms of integrability conditions (such as the well-known Novikov condition). The weak convergence approach that we propose allows to replace integrability conditions by a suitable tightness condition. We then provide several applications of this approach ranging from simplified proofs of classical results to characterizations of processes conditioned on first passage time events and…
In this article we use a criterion for the integrability of paths of one-dimensional diffusion processes from which we derive new insights on allelic fixation in several situations. This well known criterion involves a simple necessary and sufficient condition based on scale function and speed measure. We provide a new simple proof for this result and also obtain explicit bounds for the moments of such integrals. We also extend this criterion to non-homogeneous processes by use of Girsanov's transform. We apply our results to multi-type population dynamics: using the criterion with appropriate…
We provide an original and general sufficient criterion ensuring the exponential contraction of Feynman-Kac semi-groups of penalized processes. This criterion is applied to time-inhomogeneous one-dimensional diffusion processes conditioned not to hit 0 and to penalized birth and death processes evolving in a quenched random environment.
Let $p_1 \ge p_2 \ge \dots$ be the prime factors of a random integer chosen uniformly from $1$ to $n$, and let $$ \frac{\log p_1}{\log n}, \frac{\log p_2}{\log n}, \dots $$ be the sequence of scaled log factors. Billingsley's Theorem (1972), in its modern formulation, asserts that the limiting process, as $n \to \infty$, is the Poisson-Dirichlet process with parameter $θ=1$. In this paper we give a new proof, inspired by the 1993 proof by Donnelly and Grimmett, and extend the result to factorizations of elements of normed arithmetic semigroups satisfying certain growth conditions, for which th…
The maximum composite likelihood estimator for parametric models of determinantal point processes (DPPs) is discussed. Since the joint intensities of these point processes are given by determinant of positive definite kernels, we have the explicit form of the joint intensities for every order. This fact enables us to consider the generalized maximum composite likelihood estimator for any order. This paper introduces the two step generalized composite likelihood estimator and shows the moment convergence of the estimator under a stationarity. Moreover, our results can yield information criteria…
An elementary and rigorous justification of Dynkin's identity with an extended infinitesimal operator based on the idea of a complete probability formula is given for queueing systems with a single server and discontinuous intensities of arrivals and serving.
In this note, with the help of the boundary classification of diffusions, we derive a criterion of the convergence of perpetual integral functionals of transient real-valued diffusions. In the particular case of transient Bessel processes, we note that this criterion agrees with the one obtained via Jeulin's convergence lemma.
The celebrated Nualart-Peccati criterion [Ann. Probab. 33 (2005) 177-193] ensures the convergence in distribution toward a standard Gaussian random variable $N$ of a given sequence $\{X_n\}_{n\ge1}$ of multiple Wiener-Itô integrals of fixed order, if $\mathbb {E}[X_n^2]\to1$ and $\mathbb {E}[X_n^4]\to \mathbb {E}[N^4]=3$. Since its appearance in 2005, the natural question of ascertaining which other moments can replace the fourth moment in the above criterion has remained entirely open. Based on the technique recently introduced in [J. Funct. Anal. 266 (2014) 2341-2359], we settle this problem…
We consider the well-known problem of the computation of the (limiting) time-dependent performance characteristics of one-dimensional continuous-time birth and death processes on $\mathbb{Z}$ with time varying and possible state-dependent intensities. First in the literature upper bounds on the rate of convergence along with one new concentration inequality are provided. Upper bounds for the error of truncation are also given. Condition under which a limiting (time-dependent) distribution exists is formulated but relies on the quantities that need to be guessed in each use-case. The developed …
In this article, we introduce the space $D([0,1];D)$ of functions defined on $[0,1]$ with values in the Skorohod space $D$, which are right-continuous and have left limits with respect to the $J_1$ topology. This space is equipped with the Skorohod-type distance introduced in Whitt (1980). Following the classical approach of Billingsley (1968, 1999), we give several criteria for tightness of probability measures on this space, by characterizing the relatively compact subsets of this space. In particular, one of these criteria has been used in the recent article Balan and Saidani (2018) for pro…
We consider the problem of the convergence of the so-called Le Page series in the Skohorod space $\bbD^d=\bbD([0,1],\bbR^d)$ and provide a simple criterion based on the moments of the increments of the random process involved in the series. This provides a simple sufficient condition for the existence of an $α$-stable distribution on $\bbD^d$ with given spectral measure.
In this paper we prove a criterion of convergence in distribution in Skorokhod space. We apply this criterion to some special Levy processes and obtain almost-sure versions of limit theorems for these processes.
In 2005, Nualart and Peccati showed that, surprisingly, the convergence in distribution of a normalized sequence of multiple Wiener-Itô integrals towards a standard Gaussian law is equivalent to convergence of just the fourth moment to 3. Recently, this result has been extended to a sequence of multiple Wigner integrals, in the context of free Brownian motion. The goal of the present paper is to offer an elementary, unifying proof of these two results. The only advanced, needed tool is the product formula for multiple integrals. Apart from this formula, the rest of the proof only relies on sof…
Gradient bounds had proved to be a very efficient tool for the control of the rate of convergence to equilibrium for parabolic evolution equations. Among the gradient bounds methods, the celebrated Bakry-Émery criterion is a powerful way prove to convergence to equilibrium with an exponential rate. To be satisfied, this criterion requires some form of ellipticity of the diffusion operator. In the past few years, there have been several works extending the Bakry-Émery methodology to hypoelliptic operators. Inspired by these methods, we describe a rather simple generalization of the criterion th…
A numerical method is proposed for a class of stochastic control problems including singular behavior. This method solves an infinite-dimensional linear program equivalent to the stochastic control problem using a finite element type approximation, which results in a solvable finite-dimensional program. The discretization scheme as well as the necessary assumptions are discussed, and a detailed convergence analysis for the discretization scheme is given. Its performance is illustrated by two examples featuring a long-term average cost criterion.
We study the Taylor expansion for the solution of a differential equation driven by a multidimensional Holder path with exponent β> 1/2. We derive a convergence criterion that enables us to write the solution as an infinite sum of iterated integrals on a nonempty interval. We apply our deterministic results to stochastic differential equations driven by fractional Brownian motions with Hurst parameter H > 1\2. We also prove that by using L_2 estimates of iterated integrals, the criterion and the speed of convergence for the stochastic Taylor expansion can be improved using Borel-Cantelli type…
We prove a new convergence condition for the activity expansion of correlation functions in equilibrium statistical mechanics with possibly negative pair potentials. For non-negative pair potentials, the criterion is an if and only if condition. The condition is formulated with a sign-flipped Kirkwood-Salsburg operator and known conditions such as Koteck${ý}$-Preiss and Fern${á}$ndez-Procacci are easily recovered. In addition, we deduce new sufficient convergence conditions for hard-core systems in $\mathbb R^d$ and $\mathbb Z^d$ as well as for abstract polymer systems. The latter improves on …
Uniform in time convergence of numerical schemes for stochastic differential equations via Strong Exponential stability: Euler methods, Split-Step and Tamed Schemes
We derive a general criterion for the convergence of clock processes in random dynamics in random environments that is applicable in cases when correlations are not negligible, extending recent results by Gayrard [(2010), (2011), forthcoming], based on general criterion for convergence of sums of dependent random variables due to Durrett and Resnick [Ann. Probab. 6 (1978) 829-846]. We demonstrate the power of this criterion by applying it to the case of random hopping time dynamics of the p-spin SK model. We prove that on a wide range of time scales, the clock process converges to a stable sub…
In this paper, we apply the Stein's method in the context of point processes, namely when the target measure is the distribution of a finite Poisson point process. We show that the so-called Kantorovich-Rubinstein distance between such a measure and another finite point process is bounded by the $L^1$-distance between their respective Papangelou intensities. Then, we deduce some convergence rates for sequences of point processes approaching a Poisson or a Cox point process.
We study the convergence in probability in the non-standard $M_1$ Skorokhod topology of the Hilbert valued stochastic convolution integrals of the type $\int_0^t F_γ(t-s)\,d L(s)$ to a process $\int_0^t F(t-s)\, d L(s)$ driven by a Lévy process $L$. In Banach spaces we introduce strong, weak and product modes of $M_1$-convergence, prove a criterion for the $M_1$-convergence in probability of stochastically continuous càdlàg processes in terms of the convergence in probability of the finite dimensional marginals and a good behaviour of the corresponding oscillation functions, and establish crit…
We discuss stochastic calculus for large classes of Gaussian processes, based on rough path analysis. Our key condition is a covariance measure structure combined with a classical criterion due to Jain and Monrad [Ann. Probab. 11 (1983) 46-57]. This condition is verified in many examples, even in absence of explicit expressions for the covariance or Volterra kernels. Of special interest are random Fourier series, with covariance given as Fourier series itself, and we formulate conditions directly in terms of the Fourier coefficients. We also establish convergence and rates of convergence in ro…
We propose a stochastic collocation method based on the piecewise constant interpolation on the probability space combined with a finite volume method to solve the compressible Navier-Stokes system at the nodal points. We show convergence of numerical solutions to a statistical solution of the Navier-Stokes system on condition that the numerical solutions are bounded in probability. The analysis uses the stochastic compactness method based on the Skorokhod/Jakubowski representation theorem and the criterion of convergence in probability due to Gyöngy and Krylov.
